I am a college sophomore currently attending Bowling Green State University. My entire educational career has been a hard fight. I have been diagnosed with testing anxiety. I've always been able to comprehend and participate in class, however, it never translated while taking exams. I previously tested for an IEP but was told that I didn't need one. As a result, I've had to figure out how to overcome this and be successful. It has been an uphill battle, but it's worth it. Despite the struggle, I knew my worth and wanted to pursue this collegiate career. I've decided to attend Bowling Green State University to study Human Development and Family Sciences with a minor in Child Life. I chose this school because they saw past my GPA, believed in me, and decided to give me a chance. I understand the importance of having a college degree and continuing to attend this school will help me fulfill my dream of helping others. I know how it feels to be in the "gray" area and need services that may be "outside" of the box. Being here at BGSU I have managed to get a 3.41 GPA with all the accommodations that they provided for me this past year. Getting this GPA has given me a boost of confidence because I never thought that I was capable of amounting to something that good when it came to my GPA. Although I am proud, it did not come without sacrifice. I chose not to attend any parties or other events. If I was not in class or working, I was participating in study groups, tutoring, or studying in my room independently. This upcoming school year, my challenge will be learning to have balance. How to be social, and participate in activities, while still being able to be successful in my studies. Even with my success, I was only offered an Ohio Opportunity Grant of $4000 and a college scholarship of $3000 (after submitting a letter of appeal.) Coming from a single-parent household and being the first person in my family to attend and graduate college, has been an adjustment. My mother has always been in my corner, supporting me every step of the way. This is my first time away from my family and being solely responsible for advocating for myself. This scholarship will help my family as my mother pays private tuition for my younger brother. For My future, I want to get my degree in social work so that I can help children who need it the most. I want to be an example for them to never give up, believe in yourself, and to advocate for yourself. I was a finalist last year, so I pray that I am selected his year. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration, Kiara E. Cartwright

Leveraging a degree in Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) to champion the empowerment and well-being of BIPOC women involves a multifaceted approach that combines academic knowledge with community engagement, advocacy, and systemic change efforts. Here's how I envision this process: Understanding Systemic Challenges Deepen Your Knowledge: Using my background in HDFS to understand the unique developmental, relational, and systemic challenges faced by BIPOC women. This includes studying the impacts of historical and contemporary discrimination, socio-economic disparities, and cultural factors on their lives. Research and Analysis: Conduct research that highlights the specific needs and strengths of BIPOC women. This could involve qualitative studies, needs assessments, and analyses of existing data to uncover gaps in services and identify areas where interventions could be most effective. Engaging with Communities Build Relationships: Forge partnerships with community organizations, local leaders, and grassroots groups that are already working on issues related to BIPOC women. Authentic relationships will help me to understand community needs and gain trust. Collaborative Projects: Develop and implement community-based programs that address specific issues faced by BIPOC women, such as mental health support, financial literacy, or educational opportunities. Ensure these programs are culturally relevant and co-created with the communities they aim to serve. Education and Training: Offer workshops, seminars, or training sessions that empower BIPOC women with skills and knowledge. Focus on areas like leadership development, advocacy strategies, and personal well-being. Advocating for Change Policy Advocacy: Use my expertise to advocate for policies that address systemic disparities. Engage with policymakers to promote legislation that supports the well-being of BIPOC women, such as policies related to healthcare access, economic opportunities, and anti-discrimination laws. Raise Awareness: Use platforms like social media, blogs, or community events to raise awareness about the challenges faced by BIPOC women and advocate for their needs. Share research findings, personal stories, and calls to action. Amplify Voices: Support and amplify the voices of BIPOC women in advocacy spaces. Ensure they are represented in decision-making processes and leadership roles. Contributing to Social Justice and Equity Equity-Focused Initiatives: Champion initiatives that aim to reduce disparities and promote equity. This could involve creating or supporting programs that offer scholarships, mentorship, or career development specifically for BIPOC women. Continuous Learning: Stay informed about the evolving issues and solutions related to BIPOC women’s empowerment. Engage in ongoing education about systemic racism, cultural competency, and social justice. Evaluate and Adapt: Regularly evaluate the impact of your efforts and adapt strategies as needed. Seek feedback from the communities you serve and make adjustments to improve effectiveness and address emerging needs. Build Alliances: Collaborate with other advocates, researchers, and organizations to strengthen my impact. Collective action can often achieve more significant results than working in isolation. By integrating these strategies, I can effectively use my HDFS degree to make a meaningful difference in the lives of BIPOC women, advocating for their rights, and contributing to a more equitable society.

Growing up in a single-parent household can profoundly shape a person's perspectives, values, and aspirations. My experiences in this environment have instilled in me a deep understanding importance of support systems. Currently, I major in Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) and it can lead to a fulfilling career focused on doing good and helping others. Impact of Being Raised in a Single-Parent Household Resilience and Adaptability: Being raised in a single-parent household often requires navigating a range of challenges, from financial constraints to emotional stresses. My ability to persevere through difficulties and adapt to changing circumstances will serve me well as I continue your education and embark on your career. My ability to relate to and support individuals from various backgrounds will enhance my effectiveness in roles within HDFS. Motivation and Drive: As a first-generation college student, I'm breaking new ground for myself and my family. This achievement reflects my determination and commitment to creating new opportunities for myself and potentially for future generations. My background can serve as a powerful source of motivation, driving me to excel in your studies and career and to make a positive impact on others. Creating Supportive Environments: Whether working in schools, non-profits, or community organizations, your goal could be to create environments where individuals and families feel valued and supported. By applying your skills in human development, you could design programs and initiatives that foster healthy relationships, build resilience, and enhance overall well-being.

My Aunt (Grandtie combination of grand mother and auntie,) Elizabeth Bates has impacted my life tremendously. My actual grandmother passed away right after my first birthday. Her sister, my great aunt then assumed the role. I was to now refer to her as "Granny." She was patient with me and always supported me no matter what. My mother also did those things, however, my granny stood in and filled the gap. She taught me how to understand that "what's for me is for me." And no two people are the same. Stop living based on how/what others do. Figure out Kiara's path, how to get there, and how to successfully stay on it. I have testing anxiety and struggled throughout my educational career with exams and quizzes. I would understand the material, and will actively participate in class, however, when it came to independent thinking (exams/quizzes) I always drew a blank. I tested for an IEP in the third grade, however, I wasn't server enough. In Ohio, we have to pass the third grade reading exam in order to promote to the 4th grade. My school wanted to retain me and have me repeat the entire 3rd grade. At that time, my mother decided to transfer to a school that would be willing to work with me. At my new school, I was able to enroll as a 4th grader, but had to stay in reading and math for 3rd grade until I passed the OAA. I am happy to report that with a lot of recommendations, studying, and practice, I passed the exam in the spring of my 4th grade year. My struggles continued on, and because I did not have an IEP, schools are not mandated to provide any accommodations or 504 plans. I was blessed throughout the years with some teachers that took the time to assess my need and provide assistance. I graduated high school with a 2.3 GPA and opted out of taking the ACT and SAT. As a result, I was not offered any scholarships when I selected to attend Bowling Green State University other than the Pell Grant and student loans. I provided my diagnosis to the accessibility center at BGSU and was accepted. I know the resources needed to be successful. I get extra time on an exam if needed, tutoring sessions, I participate in the TRIO program, one on one time with my professor, and just different resource topics throughout the year. With all of the in place along the the support of my Grandtie and my mother, I'm happy to report that I finished my first year of college with a 3.41 GPA. I am motivated and determined to keep up this fight. Thank you for your time and consideration.

My name is Kiara, and I just successfully completed my first year of college. My entire educational career has been a hard fight. I have been diagnosed with testing anxiety. I've always been able to comprehend and participate in class, however, it never translated while taking exams. I previously tested for an IEP, but I wasn’t “severe” enough to receive one. As a result, I've had to figure out how to overcome this and be successful as I was not able to have any accommodation in school. It has been an uphill battle, but it's worth it. I was told to start with attending Community College or entering a trade school. I’ve always dreamed of attending college, getting good grades, graduating, and giving back by helping people like me. Despite the struggle, I know my worth and want to pursue this collegiate career. I’m currently at Bowling Green State University and majoring in Human Development and Family Studies. I chose Bowling Green State University because they saw past my 2.3 high school GPA, believed in me, and decided to give me a chance. I understand the importance of having a college degree in the Human Resources field and attending this school will help me fulfill my dream of helping others. I know how it feels to be in the "gray" area and need services that may be "outside" of the box. Winning this scholarship would allow me to focus on school and not worry about the financial burden. Because of my 2.3 GPA in high school, I did not receive any scholarships outside of the Pell Grant and work study because of filling out the FAFSA. Bowling Green State University is a test optional school. Because of my testing anxiety, I opted out of taking the ACT and SAT. This also prevented me from receiving any merit-based scholarships. My mother is a single parent and is also paying for private tuition for my younger brother. I will be the first in my family to attend and graduate college. I am proud to report that I finished my first year with a 3.41 GPA. This is the highest my GPA has been since 8th grade. I utilized all the resources provided, met with my advisor regularly, studied, and remained focused. This scholarship will allow my family and I the opportunity to be successful across all platforms. I'll be able to continue to attend and focus on school, and my mother will be able to continue to pay for my brother's tuition. Having this opportunity will allow me to continue to work hard to focus so that I can maintain or exceed my current 3.41 GPA to be eligible for merit- based scholarships in the future. I pray that you now understand my story and assist me with completing the next chapter of my life. It will build my confidence and confirm that I AM worthy of attending college and capable of graduating. I have taken the necessary steps to have services and support during my time in school to ensure that I am successful and will graduate. I participate in the Trio program, and I have been accepted into the accessibility center. Being in the accessibility center has provided accommodations for test taking. Again, I know that it won't be easy however I continue to be up for the challenge. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Please continue to give women hope of attending college despite facing any challenges or adversities.

I know how it feels to be in the "gray" area and need services that may be "outside" of the box. I attend church in the same neighborhood where I grew up. It has gone down, and the community is in desperate need of assistance. For everything mentioned above, it inspired me to have the first health and wellness fair for the Mt. Pleasant Community. The health and wellness committee consists of myself, my mother, my grandmother, and other church members. This group was created while I was home for Christmas break. It was a challenging experience considering I was 2 hours away for school, working, and attempting to successfully pass my first year of college. It took a lot of time to determine what was the “best fit” to serve our community. Our fair was held on June 8, 2024. There were dental screenings for children, id and fingerprint kits for children, mammograms for women, prostate screenings for men, biometric screenings for all, Cleveland Food Bank for all, mental health services for all, Cleveland Zoo (therapeutic services for all,) free food and activities, and so much more. Because there was such a nice turn-out and so much appreciation, we decided to make this an annual event and are in the planning stages for next year. The community was so thankful as many of them don’t have access to health insurance to receive some of the services that were offered. Winning this scholarship would allow me to focus on school and not worry about the financial burden. Rev. and Mrs. E B Dunbar Scholarship
As soon as I figured out what I wanted to do in life, I just knew that I had to be assisting children who are not heard or seen. I want to be the person that they can trust when they cannot trust anyone else, especially in their homes or at least find them another home where they are loved. So, I chose the field of HDFS which means Human and Family Science and I have chosen a minor in Child Life here at BGSU. With this major and minor I can work with kids who are in foster care so that their needs are being met and that they find a home where they are being taken care of properly. I am a person that was not seen or heard during my entire educational career. It was always assumed that I did not care about school, didn't study hard enough, or I wasn't working hard enough. I have testing anxiety and when it comes to exams, everything draws a blank. I did not qualify for an IEP or 504 plan, so the schools where not mandated to provide accommodations. What I have learned from this so far is that children watch everything that you do in life and listen to everything that you say about them. That one thing that you do or say will make a lasting impression on how they deal with things in their life. I will make every attempt to ensure that I am setting the best example that I can be so that they have someone that they can come to any time they are in need. I do not want them to feel abandoned and would like the opportunity to provide them with resources to be successful in life. I want to learn the different ways to communicate with a child so that they will open up more when it comes to the traumas that they have been through so that they are not keeping their emotions bottled up inside. During the summer, my church Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church offers a summer camp. I volunteer there as a camp counselor and I am responsible for preparing and teaching curriculum for the 8 – 12-year-olds. I find this to be so rewarding and found that it became more than just being their teacher. The children began to feel comfortable and talk about things other than schoolwork. The communication continued beyond the camp. They began to attend church and kept me abreast of how they’re doing in school. Some of the children were grateful to have someone that was willing to listen and not judge. I want to be a positive light for children and provide resources and help them to understand how worthy they are of anything in the world. Give them the confidence needed in order to be successful in life. I want to also assist giving children the skillset of advocating for themselves. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I come from a single parent household and will be the first person in my family to graduate college. My greatest achievement to date is finishing my first year of college with a 3.41 GPA. I graduated high school with a 2.3 GPA and was told to either get a job or start off by attending a community college. As a result, I was not offered any scholarships. My mom and I had an agreement. If I successfully completed my first year, should would assist with my tuition. I suffer from anxiety and independent thinking has always been a struggle throughout my entire educational career. I was not eligible for an IEP. It was always the assumption that I didn't care or tried my best because of low test and/or quiz scores. I've always dreamed of going to college and I know that I deserved to be there. Not having complete support and having doubters (mom included) made me nervous and added to my anxiety. I purposefully looked for colleges that were test optional and would have the necessary programs and/or resources for me to be successful. I got to school, enrolled in the Trio program, accepted into the accessibility center, and participated in the Ohioans with Disabilities programs. These programs provided resources that contributed to my success. Going to college and participating in the programs taught me that with having the right team and resources in place, the sky is the limit. I learned that I am smart, independent, organized, and self-sufficient. My hope is to achieve a college degree in Business. Currently my major is Human Development and Family Sciences with a minor in Child Life. My goal is to be a Social worker at a hospital or other medical facility. I would also like to be a mentor to incoming freshman that are enrolled in one or more of the programs that currently assist me. I know all to well how it feels to be left out, over looked, and misunderstood. Having an invisible disability makes it hard for the appropriate services to be provided. I would like to facilitate an assessment with potential clients to determine the need and provide appropriate services regardless of the spectrum or issue. It's important to listen and make persons feel heard. I want to be an example for my brother and others like myself. Winning this scholarship would remove the financial burden and allow me to focus on school. Thank you for your time and consideration. This an amazing opportunity and it's greatly appreciated.

I will be a sophomore in the fall. I come from a single parent household and I will be the first person in my family to graduate college. College is so important to me because I want to prove to myself that it can be done successfully. I graduated from high school with a 2.3 GPA. I suffer from anxiety, however, I don't qualify for an IEP or 504 plan. Attending private schools, they weren't obligated to provide accommodations. Having an invisible disability is hard to deal with. It was always the assumption that because I didn't perform will on quizzes and/or exams that I didn't care or try hard enough. Independent thinking has been an issue my entire educational career. I tried all suggestions and sometimes it just didn't always work in my favor. When looking for colleges, I intentionally looked at schools that were test optional and would be willing to provide the services needed to be successful in college. I was accepted into the Pathway Program at Bowling Green State University and accepted into the accessibility center. Both programs provided tutoring, mandatory meetings with an advisor, more time on tests if needed, and many opportunities just to ask questions. I also participate with Ohioans with Disabilities Program. They provide assistance with tuition and books, they assist with finding internships. I am thrilled to report that I completed my first year of college with a 3.41 GPA. I know how it feels to be looked over, misunderstood, and in need of services. As a result, I've decided to major in Human Development and Family Sciences with a minor in Child Life. I am wanting to accomplish being a Social Worker in either a hospital or medical facility. I want to be able to provide resources to individuals or families however needed. Person's in the "gray" area need assist as well. Not all disabilities nor resources are strictly black and white. I would love to facilitate an assessment to determine the need no matter the spectrum. Even with my successful year, I did not receive any scholarships or financial aid other than what was offered by submitting the 2024/25 FAFSA. Being selected will help remove some of the financial burden and allow me to focus on school and be one step closer to my goal. In spite of the challenges, earning a college degree is well worth it. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I am enrolled as a college freshman, and my entire educational career has been a hard fight. I have been diagnosed with testing anxiety. I've always been able to comprehend and participate in class, however, it never translated while taking exams. I previously tested for an IEP, but I wasn’t “severe” enough to receive one. As a result, I've had to figure out how to overcome this and be successful. It has been an uphill battle, but it's worth it. Despite the struggle, I know my worth and want to pursue this collegiate career. I’m currently at Bowling Green State University and majoring in Human Development and Family Studies. I chose Bowling Green State University because they saw past my GPA, believed in me, and decided to give me a chance. I understand the importance of having a college degree and attending this school will help me fulfill my dream of helping others. I know how it feels to be in the "gray" area and need services that may be "outside" of the box. Winning this scholarship would allow me to focus on school and not worry about the financial burden. Because of my 2.3 GPA in high school, I did not receive any scholarships outside of the Pell Grant and work study as a result of filling out the FAFSA. My mother is a single parent and is also paying for private tuition for my younger brother. I will be the first in my family to attend and graduate college. I am proud to report that I finished my first semester with a 3.4 GPA. I utilized all of the resources provided, met with my advisor regularly, studied, and remained focused. This scholarship will allow my family and I the opportunity to be successful across all platforms. I'll be able to continue to attend and focus on school, and my mother will be able to continue to pay for my brother's tuition. Having this opportunity will allow me to continue to work hard to focus so that I can maintain or exceed my current 3.4 GPA to be eligible for merit- based scholarships in the future.

BIPOC individuals with disabilities experience lower education levels, lower employment rates, fewer household resources, and poorer health than people without disabilities. People with disabilities are seldom integrated into sociological studies on inequality. A person with a disability would live a hard life today owing to the emotional issues associated with the condition. Their identity would revolve around their disability rather than anything else the person can do. It wouldn’t matter if the individuals were as handsome or talented, like Idris Elba. At the end of the day, they will always be a disabled person. This attitude obscures one’s accomplishments and may even discourage some people from accomplishing anything. Other abled-bodied/minded individuals would always categorize such a person as a second-class citizen. It would take a lot of willpower and resolve to get past these labels and merely live one’s life. Social relations are also a serious challenge for disabled people today. Some of them live isolated lives or only interact with family or persons who have the same condition. Even though progress has been made, there is still rife in the social stigma today. This is something that I’ve dealt with my entire life up until my acceptance to Bowling Green State University because my disability is invisible. I don’t have a physical issue, it’s been “mental.” I’ve always had to advocate for myself on every educational level anytime I changed schools. Because I did not have an IEP or a 504 plan, I had to “prove” that I froze during all quizzes and/or exams. Several teachers assumed that I was not trying my best or that I didn’t care. Modern life has created several technologies and programs designed to improve and simplify the transition. Economic hurdles are also another cause of unfulfilled lives amongst the disabled. Some companies only want to focus on what sells, so they have little time to be proactive or fair. These attitudes close the door to many opportunities for the disabled as they pigeonhole them into passive professions. Choosing the Human Resources field will allow me the opportunity to set up relationships with organizations such as “Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities” that will assist disabled individuals on all disability levels find employment. I would want to work for an employer that sees past disabilities and provides people with the opportunity to have a productive and rewarding job. To increase employment among BIPOC Americans with disabilities, there will need to be comprehensive and targeted outreach and education efforts with guidance on identifying resources to set aside at regular intervals, even in small amounts. As identified above, the most financially vulnerable population in America is individuals that live at the intersection of disability, race, and ethnicity. The simultaneous experiences of discrimination and lack of access to economic opportunity, due to racism and disability, deserves urgent attention by the financial community, government, and faith-based communities as leaders to begin design and implement the path to economic equality. As President George H. W. Bush stated when signing the Americans with Disabilities Act, “Together, we must remove the physical barriers we have created and the social barriers that we have accepted. For ours will never be a truly prosperous nation until all within prosper.”

Over the past couple of years I have seen how the prices have changed drastically due to the inflation for food and any other product. I have seen first hand what it takes for a single parent to buy a forever home for herself and her kids with how competitive the market is these days. Experiencing these things has shown me what I need to do to be financially responsible. I am employed with Starbucks and I have started saving for my retirement by participating in their Futures Roast 401k program, and I also understand the importance of my credit score. With doing this, I will have money to get myself a vehicle, apply for credit cards, and a home on my own without any assistance. I will continue to have money saved so that I won’t have to struggle and will be able to survive should the inflations continue or get even worse then what they are right now. Being in highschool during the pandemic showed me how being financially stable was a necessity. It taught me the importance of purchasing items when it comes to your necessities. It has taught me that you can’t rely on other people to help tou and that tou can only rely on yourself. It taught me you have to only get what you need and not what you want because if you get what you want then you might not be able to afford what you need. Being able to start my journey of my college career has showed me all of the obstacles I still have to face. It has showed me how important it is to save up for tuition because it is super stressful when you are a kid who didn’t have a high GPA coming into the school year. But it also shows that you are capable of getting good grades and that you just need to believe in yourself. It has showed me as long as I save my money for what I have a passion for then I will be able to accomplish my dreams. I started to realize that I do not need to stress about anything anymore because now I have that GPA that I need to get the scholarships that I need to succeed in my academic career. But also being on campus it teaches you too save because everything is much more expensive.

Throughout my entire life, I always felt that I did not have many accomplishments because I was never the smartest kid in the room. I was always looked down on by other kids because I struggled with test taking. However, I have learned to channel that frustration by proving to them that even though I have testing anxiety, I can still do what the other kids in my class are able to do. I have shown them that even though I might not have the best grades, I can still be accepted into good colleges. I have shown them that even though I was almost held back a year, it does not prove that I should not be in the same class as the other students, or treated the same way as everyone else. Being a member of the Yearbook Committee has also helped me because it gives me the chance to hold people accountable for their actions. That is why I have chosen to pursue the Human Resources Management field. This will give me the chance to help people in many different ways. My main career goal is to make sure that I make positive changes in whatever company I can because there will always be one person trying to prevent another from achieving success in life. I am pursuing this degree in HR because growing up I have seen the different ways to make a change in people's lives. Continuing my education is important to me because it shows that I should have never doubted myself about how smart I am. I can finally say that I have proved everyone -including myself- wrong when they have said that I might not be able to pass a grade, or that I will be held back because of my testing. I have learned all of that by serving my community and helping out at my church with the food pantry giveaway, volunteering at the summer camp, and doing the videos for the church service. I have been volunteering at my church since I was 14, and I have loved every second of it on Sunday or any other day that we are able to help the community. Also, my school does community projects, so I have volunteered to clean up our chapel, make food boxes for those in need, and many other service projects that I have been doing since my sophomore year in high school. All of these things bring me joy because it gives me a chance to get to know my community better. Not everyone in my community is blessed to have what I have in the world. Being able to help people and get to know them - even one time- is enough to make a difference. This might actually give hope to people who do not have much. It might give them a reason to try and be better. It might show them that even though they do not have many opportunities, they will start to come their way again.

I have suffered from testing anxiety and independent thinking my entire educational career. It has been a struggle because I am the kid who has been in the "gray" area. I've been told that I tested too strongly for an IEP, and as a result, accommodations weren't mandatory. I was blessed to have some teachers who provided accommodations in an attempt for me to have the best chance to be successful. Not all teachers had the same willingness, so it's been challenging, however, with the love and support from my family and most importantly my trust in God..... I've been able to push through and continue. I owe it to myself to show that I am capable of attending and being successful in my secondary education. I chose the Human Resources field as a career path so that I can assist others and provide resources and guidance so that they will be successful in their respective careers. I understand the importance of being able to effectively communicate and recognize that everyone does not learn or communicate the same. My experience has taught me to be understanding, patient, and empathetic. Despite what others may think or say, there are opportunities for me to continue on my path and be successful. I'm a little nervous but mostly excited about the next chapter of this journey. Going through this journey during my first year of college at Bowling Green State University I realized that I do have what it takes to be in college. I realized that I have to do what is best for me because nobody else knows what's best for me but me. Most people tried to tell me that my mother would not be able to afford it even though they didn't know what our financial situations were in the household. Getting this scholarship will help me financially, sure. But that is not the overall goal; the goal is to be able to continue my educational journey that way I can get my masters if I want to. But, also to prove to myself that I am able to get a higher GPA than I did in high school and that I am able to get my degree in anything that I want to. I had to realize that I don't need anyone else to believe in me other than myself because nobody can get me where I am today.

I chose to pursue this career path because this is what I grew up watching people do in my family regarding Human Resources and Child Services. Growing up I knew that my career path would involve other people and it didn't matter how I did it as long as I could help others. At first, I thought that I was going to be working in a hospital, But, then I got introduced to the Human Development & Family Studies Program at Bowling Green State University. I realize that getting my degree in this could help me in both parts when it came to the HR management point and the child services point as well. My passion for this grew even more because people are never taken seriously sometimes when it comes to reports or dealing with children. I was always taught as a young child to give back to the people who need it the most and if you cannot give something to them then lead them to the people who can help them. My mom played a big part in the passion I have towards my career because she has made sure that her staff is heard and she makes sure that the children's needs are being met when the parents are not doing what they need to do when the children are not being taken care of properly. I know what it is like to be ignored by the people who are supposed to look after you and listen to your suggestions on how to make things better. I don't want that for these kids that I could potentially help in the future and I most certainly don't want that for any company that I could work for in the future. I have always worked with kids so I know the attention they need so they don't feel like they are being ignored or abandoned by the people that are supposed to care about them and I did this as a camp counselor and a tutor. When I decided to pursue this career path I wanted to make sure that people's needs were being heard instead of their needs being ignored. I want to use my education to make a positive impact by continuing to help people who need it the most. People's needs are constantly overlooked in companies like hospitals, education boards, and even inside the walls of the school.

I like to measure success by how much hard work you put into something you love. Growing up I saw my mother working super hard to make sure that my siblings and I were taken care of so that we did not have to worry about anything and I always admired that about her. She would take on two jobs if she needed to so that we could continue to get our education at the private school that we both attended if she needed to. Success to me means that I can provide for my family but most importantly that I can provide for my mother because she has sacrificed everything for my little brother and me our whole lives. She has taught me that everything has to be earned because it is not handed to you. I never really knew what I wanted to do when it came down to my career. But, then I realized that I wanted to go into the HR Management world because I wanted to make a difference in the business world. At my university, the HR management program is called Human Development & Family Studies. Being in this program can give me a chance to get my minor in child service or anything else that I desire. This year I chose to minor in Child Services that way I can help the children who are in the system and get overlooked. Doing this profession will help a lot of people who might not be able to take care of the children in the system. So hopefully I can help make some changes to how things are handled in the system that way that cases are not overlooked because people do not care able them. Which is not fair because everyone deserves a fair case. But, most importantly being an African American child is hard because everyone likes to stereotype you even when they do not know all of the obstacles that you have faced throughout your life. I experienced that during my senior year in high school. So, that caused me to work harder than ever worked before so that I could continue to prove them wrong. They used to tell me that I had to go to Cleveland State University or TRI-C because it would be more affordable for my mother. But, I didn't listen to them and I applied for all of the scholarships and grants that I possibly could and now I have a 3.4 GPA because chose not to listen to everyone who told me I should go to Cleveland State or TRI-C.

The person who impacted my life is my aunt, Elizabeth. When my grandmother passed away in 2005, she assumed the role for my brother and I. She was and will forever by known as "Granny." She was a person that started working right out of school, but always encouraged me to be "better" than her. I had adversities throughout my educational career, but she helped me believe in myself. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2019, but whenever I feel like I want to give up, I think about her and continue to strive. My entire educational career has been a hard fight. I have been diagnosed with testing anxiety. I've always been able comprehend and participate in class, however, it never translated while taking exams. I previously tested for an IEP, but was told that I didn't need one. As a result, I've had to figure out how to overcome this and be successful. It has been an uphill battle, but it's worth it. In spite of the struggle, I know my worth and I am pursuing my collegiate career. I am currently attending Bowling Green State University studying Human Development. I chose this school because they saw past my GPA, believed in me, and decided to give me a chance. I understand the importance of having a college degree and attending this school will help me fulfill my dream of helping others. I know how it feels to be in the "gray" area and need services that may be "outside" of the box. Winning this scholarship would allow me to continue to focus on school and not worry about the financial burden. Because of my 2.3 GPA, I did not receive any scholarships outside of the Pell Grant and work study as a result of filling out the FAFSA. I'm proud to say that I completed my first semester with a 3.4 GPA. My mother is a single parent and is also paying for private tuition for my younger brother. I will be the first in my family to attend and graduate college. This scholarship will allow my family and I the opportunity to be successfull across all platforms. I'll be able to focus on school, my mother will be able to continue to pay for my brother's tuition. Having this opportunity will help me have the GPA needed to be eligible for merit-based scholarships in the future. I pray that you now understand my story and assist me with completing the next chapter of my life. It will build my confidence and confirm that I AM worthy of attending college and capable of graduating. I have taken the necessary steps to have services and support during my time in school to ensure that I am successful and will graduate. Again, I know that it won't be easy however I continue to be up for the challenge. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Please continue to give women hope of attending college in spite of facing any challenges or adversities.

I have been diagnosed with testing anxiety and have been accepted into Bowling Green State University's accessibility program and the Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities program. I want to be an example on how to be successful in secondary education and in employment. All disabilities aren't visual and for that, I feel the importance to be an advocate for persons like myself. My major is Human Development so that I can work in the Human Resources field. I want to be able to work for a company that partners with programs/employers that will hire or provide resources for persons with disabilities. I will have first hand experience since I'm currently going through it now. Having challenges doesn't make anyone less than, it's an opportunity for employers to evolve and become more inclusive/diverse. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I come from a single parent household. My mom's mother passed away when I was just one. Her sister, my great aunt, stepped up and filled the roll of being my grandmother. I called her "granny" not Auntie. She along with my mother was my biggest supporter. I am someone that struggles with testing anxiety and it's been a battle throughout my entire educational career. I am the kid who is in the "gray area." I wasn't severe enough for an IEP and since I attended private school, they didn't acknowledge 504 plans. It was frustrating because I am able to understand the work and participate in class, however, it didn't translate on tests. My grandmother ALWAYS supported me and encouraged me to do my best and to be my authentic self. She helped me understand that my story/walk is for me and God will make a way for you. She encouraged me to never compare myself to anyone and to pursue my dreams. Losing her in 2019 right before entering high school was devastating. I had to adjust to not having daily calls from her providing encouragement and affirmations. It took a minute to adjust, but then I realized, this isn't what she would want. I put my head up and began to advocate for myself. As a result of having testing anxiety, I opted out of taking the ACT/SAT exams and didn't qualify for merit-based scholarships. I was purposeful in finding a college that would provide services in order to be successful. I now have more accommodations in college than I've had in previous schools. If it weren't for Elizabeth, I wouldn't be where I am. If I chose to believe what I've overheard being said about me, I wouldn't be in school and working in retail. I've learned to tune out the noise, focus, and do my best.

I have suffered from testing anxiety and independent thinking my entire educational career. It has been a struggle because I am the kid that has been in the "gray" area. I've been told that I tested too strongly for an IEP, and as a result, accommodations weren't mandatory. I was blessed to have some teachers that provided accommodations in an attempt for me to have the best chance to be successful. Not all teachers had the same willingness, so it's been challenging, however, with the love and support from my family and most importantly my trust in God..... I've been able to push through and continue. I owe it to myself to show that I am capable of attending and being successful in my secondary education. My report cards were never a true reflection of me as a student or my capabilities. I took the time to research and was able to find colleges that have programs designed to assist and provide services when needed. My research was correct and resulted in me being accepted into four out of 6 colleges. The acceptance proved what I've known about myself all along... "I'M WORTHY!" I know that college is expensive and I don't want to be a financial burden on my mother. My mother is a single parent and is also paying for my younger brother to attend private school. Because of my GPA, I am not eligible for merit-based scholarships. I am praying that you will also take a chance on me and assist me in living out my dream. If I am awarded this scholarship, I would be able to focus on school. It would help me be more at ease, and paying for college would be one less obstacle to overcome. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration in this process.

Over the years I have watched my grandparents and my mother with the ways they help people especially growing up in Christian family. We take pride in helping others because not everyone will have the same opportunities that we will have in this world. But as a young black women, it is already hard enough trying to prove that we are just as equally. Being a black women people think the worst things possible. For me that makes me want to try harder because it tells me that I know I can do anything that I have set in my sights. It also gives me the opportunity for me to be an advocate for others who are not able to stand up for themselves. It gives me a chance to share how I am able to overcome the diversity in the world because there will always be someone who does not want us to succeed in life. There will always be someone in your corner who you think is looking out for your best interests but are only using you for their best interests. Growing up in a Christian family I was always taught to give back to others or to help out in anyway that you can. I have always tried to do that and I will always to continue to implement that in my life. There is nothing better in this world then giving back to the people who need it most. I say all this because I love to volunteer my time during the summer even though I have a job I always make a way for it to work. I love to help at my church for the summer camp that we have. It gives me a chance to form a connection with the kids I am in charge of. I also volunteer my time at the church by recording the service every Sunday. In conclusion, I really appreciate the time and consideration you have given me for this application. This will give me a chance to do better things to help people in this world even more. Over these past 5 years combined doing these activities have meant a lot to me and the fact that I can continue to do it every year means a lot because now I have and extended family that I never thought I could have. It was as recent as my Senior year of high school. In order to receive my high school diploma, I had to pass the IOWA test. I started taking the exam my sophomore year and kept failing one section of the exam. I didn't pass until it was 6 weeks left before graduation. Even without passing, I still had to focus on doing my best in class and on regular exams. I've had hard/challenging times, but with my faith and love/support from my mother, I was able to push through. My mother is a single parent of 3. She worked hard (working two jobs,) and took the necessary steps for my brothers and I would have the best opportunities to be successful. She paid for my private school tuition from 6th grade up until I graduated high. She continues to pay for my brother's tuition as he is in the 6th grade. She decided to go the private school route so that I can have the best chance at education. Watching my mother work while instilling value in my brothers and I has shaped me tremendously. Her work ethic taught me how to be organized, humble, consistent, and determined. Having this skillset helped me throughout my entire educational career. I suffer from testing anxiety and my GPA wasn't always the strongest. I've always had to show/prove that my GPA doesn't dictate who I am as a person/student. Having her constant love and support got me through everything. I will be a first generation college graduate and I would love to honor my mother to show her all of her hard work paid off. Being selected for this scholarship will help my mother substantially. As a result of having a low GPA and not taking the SAT/ACT, I did not receive any merit based scholarships. I'm trying to avoid having to depend on student loans and my mother trying to find a way to pay for the difference. Please give me a chance and thank you for your time and consideration during this process.

My report cards were never a true reflection of me. I took the time to research and was able to find colleges that have programs designed to assist and provide services when needed. My research was correct and resulted in me being accepted into four out of 6 colleges. The acceptance proved what I've known about myself all along... "I'M WORTHY!" Even with my struggles, I want to be the first person in my family that has attended and graduate college. This will boost my confidence beyond measure and ensure that I will be successful in life. I know that college is expensive and I don't want to be a financial burden on my mother. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration in this process.
