When I attended cosmetology school, I would have my moments of embarrassing incidents take place. To set the scene, I was a newbie hairstylist that was unaware on how to operate a shampoo bowl. I assumed it would be common sense to use it, but how wrong was I that day.
During one our labs I was instructed to “throughly wash our mannequin heads.” So without hesitation I turned the knob on the highest pressure, without holding the hose part, and lifted the knob to release water.
The next thing I knew the hose had a mind of its own and blasted the water everywhere. Unfortunately no one was safe from it as it drenched me and soaked a couple of my classmates. It aimed anywhere but my mannequin in the shampoo bowl. I quickly turned off the water. My glasses were covered in water droplets and my uniform was drenched from my head to my socks.
I got a serious scolding from my teacher during the time and was forced to cleans up my ginormous mess. But as time went on in school everyone would make many jokes referring to my incident.

Ultimately I would nominate Forrest Gump as the best book-to film- adaption in cinema history. I have personally read this book when I was in middle school and found out about the movie later on during early high school. I can happily say that I know that movie by heart and can watch over and over again without ever getting tired of it.
To give a synopsis, the story follows a man named Forrest Gump as he embarks on strange adventures throughout his life. The story tells adventures of shrimp boating, fighting in Vietnam, playing pin pong, and even meeting the president. Although it sounds like comedic fantasy that could never happen to anyone, the emotions from the characters happen to add a touch of realism for viewers to attach to. Not only that but Forrest Gump adds a refreshing quirky take on being the main character. Although his quirky behavior got him in trouble at times, it also by luck gave him so many opportunities no other ordinary person has experienced.
In my opinion, the director seamlessly transported you into Forrest Gumps world and transferred the story in a way that would also attract audience members who have never read the book before. The story is told same but what made it so breathtakingly beautiful are the actors portrayals of the characters. Toms Hanks was the perfect choice to display the quirky awkward behavior of Forrest Gump and gave the audience a reason to why they should care so much for this character. The love interest he follows throughout his life shows the trials the tribulations of their romance. The love interest, Jenny, opens the topic of how childhood trauma and abuse can follow a person through their life. She used unhealthy ways to cope with her pain and trauma. But in the end there was always Forrest Gump who loved her no matter what and just thought of her as the little girl he used to play with everyday.
The movie covers many sensitive topics including AIDS which was something that was not commonly discussed in the time period the movie took place. What brings me back to this movie over and over again is its overall interpreted message towards me. Forrest Gumps tale depicts the importance of hard work without expecting anything out of it. It also shows how the destiny we choose is a result of the opportunities we accept. To anyone reading this, if you have not yet watched or even read Forrest’s Gump yet, I promise you that this film will truly open your eyes.

I would like to deeply further explore the idea of the existence of language. Our everyday use, the evolution, and cultural differences or similarities among different languages. Although yes a minuscule skill to most people; we take for granted how much we have achieved with our way of words.
Since the beginning of human existence we used different forms of common communication tactic to get a point across. At first they used methods such as signs, sounds, music, dance, and drawings to express ideas or convey information. Slowly as the human population spread out across the globe, we developed differentiated ways to communicate. It has been studied that the oldest recorded languages have been around since 350 BC. Languages such as Tamil, Sanskrit, Egyptian, Hebrew, and Chinese were the foundations to possibly shaping how people converse with one another today.
As of 2025, there is estimated to be around 7,000 languages. An astonishing number. It truly makes us think with so many languages coexisting; how do we simply speak to each other? Well thanks to colonization, lingua francas, and the modern use of technology. Its now very easy to understand someone who may be form an entirely different country than you.
For example; India is home to 121 languages and an estimate of 121,000 dialects. But after the British colonized India for 90 years. This dramatically changed how language was entirely used. Today English, Hindi, and Hindustani is a lingua franca to makeup for the disparity between other ethnic groups. Many other countries were affected by colonization and hence fourth were forced to adjust their colonizers; such as Nigeria, Ghana, Philippines, Mexico, etc.
But besides languages itself there are even “subcategories” or dialects, accents, pidgins that can be in one single language. Of course the most wide spoken one, English, alone is spoken among 88 countries and territories. In the United States there are an estimated 24-30 dialects across different states depending on your location, ethnicity background, and social class. Now when it comes to making a dialect over much time. It occurs when people of the same language are separated by geography for long amounts of time so they start making their own twist to the language. Some are minor while others may sound unrecognizable or barely able to understand each other.
Now whats the difference between pidgin, accents, and dialects? Although they seem very interchangeable they perform different functions in languages. An accent is characterized by how words are solely pronounced by the speaker. A dialect is when grammar and vocabulary have slightly changed. Then pidgin is developed usually formed from those of lower class or from colonization and is a tactic to simplify the dominant language to their native one.
In our 21st century, there are many discoveries still being made about languages but unfortunately there are many that are slowly dying due to a decreasing amount of speakers. I wrote this essay to implore more people open their minds to the impact of languages and the great importance of preserving such a vital piece of our history.

Well as a child I had always dreamed of being a painter and doing murals for buildings. Although this passion continued though the end of high school, it unfortunately did not carry on though college. Due to my family’s financial circumstances and being kicked out after moving to California, I was left with no choice but to pursue another field of work.
After living in a shelter for a couple of months, I found a roof over my head and a restaurant job to keep me a float and ease enough money for college. It felt saddening during the time. Knowing I was behind at the age of 20 and not going with the goal I had previously intended.
I truly lost with no guidance and knew I needed to find a way to support my parents. So after working full time for a year, I enrolled in a cosmology program to become a hair stylist. I had hoped this would change my mind about what I wanted to do in life while I can support myself and my parents.
But unfortunately being a hairstylist was not my calling… in fact after graduating I felt unsure about my future. I still had that craving for something anew.
Although I may still be young, I’ve had a lot of customer service experience. I knew I wanted to do something that involved helping others and somthing that I could enjoy doing for the rest of my life.
During the summer of 2024, I discovered my passion for learning languages again. I didn’t pursue either in the past because I never thought I would be good enough. This doubt was holding me back, and luckily my dear friend made me realize that and told me to just go for it. Besides the worst that can happen is me not even trying.
So I took the leap and enrolled in community college for an associates in Spanish. Along with that I enrolled on a medical interpreter program as well to train for the state test. After community college I want to further pursue for a bachelor and masters degree. Then I want to volunteer for Red Cross and help people in other countries who need medical attention and work for Kaiser as well.
Although its not what I would’ve thought my life would go, I had to learn that its okay if things didn’t go how you wanted them to go and they’re will always be other doors that will open in life.

Goals are built from foundations. Those foundations can take months, maybe even years to build upon. But they are the stepping stones needed to reach the desired objective. Even if the goal changes, does not lessen its importance.
After graduating high school; I went to California to earn more money and for more educational opportunities. But due to the post pandemic; the job market was tough, and community colleges refused to accept me due to my out of state residency.
Although a rough start, I lived with my family for the time being. I didn’t grow up with them since my immediate family lived so far. Bu later I was kicked out from their home and forced to live elsewhere.
It felt as though I had taken so many steps back. What I thought was going to be a bright future for me, I couldn’t see anymore. Feeling lost and more lonely than ever, in a city that felt so foreign to me.
Eventually I found shelter and a job to help sustain me for the meanwhile.
Later I applied for a cosmetology program. But the experience didn’t feel fulfilling enough.
So while balancing my three jobs during the summer, I took whatever little free time I had to pick up my past hobbies. But nothing was really sticking to me. Until, I started picking up languages again. I had a certain passion with Spanish mostly. It was the only hobby I stuck with even when my last semester began.
My classmate then encouraged me to use my passion for the healthcare field. It made sense with the fact that all my jobs have been involved with helped people. With further thought, I felt a new passion I can pursue. So I decided to make a big leap. I signed up next year to begin my associates degree in Spanish at my local community college. Also enrolling into their medical interpreting program to prepare myself for the license exam.
It’s feels exhilarating knowing I’m actually pursuing something that I envision myself doing for many years onward. I am truly excited for this chapter to close and to start anew. I hope I’ll get to increase my Spanish skills in the coming year. And use my future career as a way to build bridges between language barriers. Providing comfort to those who may have no access to a proper healthcare. Or clearing any worries or concerns for medical treatments. As procedures like this can be intimidating to those who may who especially have a language barrier.
Once I’m done with my associates I want to transfer to earn my bachelors then masters degree. After I want to volunteer abroad and work for companies like Red Cross or Kaiser to aid certain populations that need help the most.
Sturz Legacy Scholarship
Well to begin my biography, I was raised in a small town on an island in the middle of nowhere. Although peaceful, I couldn’t imagine staying there my whole life. There was a whole world I hadn’t seen and I wanted a different experience.
So shortly after graduating in 2022, I decided to pursue the California dream. I moved from a tiny town to the big city. Thinking getting a job and enrolling into a college would be a breeze. But with most people still recovering from the pandemic, unfortunately there was a lot of competition to enter the job market. Additionally, colleges here wouldn’t accept me due to my residency status.
Luckily I had family in California that offered for me to stay as long as I needed. But since I lived in such an isolated area growing up, I didn’t get to know my relatives as much. Although it felt as though I was living with strangers.
My relationship with my family started to slowly form.
Except, little did I know…that it would truly start spiraling down from there. A few arguments and $500 stolen. I was kicked out from their home and with harsh words was told “ to go back where I came from and never return.” I felt lonely…and lost in that moment.
In January I found shelter and a job to help sustain me for the meanwhile. I knew I needed to find a better way to support myself. So I decided to apply for a cosmetology program.
I enrolled in August 2023, as I knew I can financially support myself and my family. However…I didn’t realize how treacherous doing six days of school; work three days a week would be. Needless to say I’ve been tested mentally and physically.
Now nearly graduating, I used the summer break to reflect. I had realized I couldn’t envision myself being a barber for the next 10 years of my life.
While working three jobs during the summer, I took whatever little free time I had to pick up my past hobbies. But nothing was really sticking to me. Until, I started picking up languages again. I had a certain passion with Spanish mostly. It was the only hobby I stuck with even when my last semester began.

Future Leaders Scholarship
I’ve had the pleasure of being given two big opportunities in leadership roles in both school and work. Although I was being entrusted with this tittle by someone who thought highly of me. I felt as though I had many skills to improve upon before I felt like I could truly call myself a leader.
My academic experience with leadership involved a big mural project with the high school art club. The art teacher had entrusted me the role of art club president. To run things smoothly and efficiently. But little did I know that this position would come with many issues to be dealt with. At first it was very overwhelming as my communication skills were weak and my self confidence was low. Then I had the constant problems of sorting out disagreements among club members, miscommunication, ghosting, graffiti upon our mural, weather delays, and stolen supplies.
I knew I had to work something out. So my best solution was to pick previous members that I knew had a passion for art. As the old saying goes, teamwork makes the dream work. This vastly improved our project development and slowly everything came together. Although stressful, it was memorable high school experience.
Before entering the workforce I was not aware of the amount of responsibility it took to run a restaurant or business. My managers and shift leaders always confidently directed us on our tasks. I wanted to do the same but I believed I needed to gain more experience under my belt.
As I started my first job in California in 2023 at a Korean restaurant, I had to learn all the ins and outs of how everything operates. Know how every task is run. And communicate with fellow team members even with our language barrier. But after a year and a half and working there full time, my second manager had given me the responsibility of shift leader.
It was my first time being given a lot of responsibility in a professional setting. So I took my role very seriously. Training employees, taking shipments, and closing the establishment. I enjoyed being the shift leader although with a few difficulties such as co workers not cooperating with one another or even admitting to when I made a mistake. Although not perfect, I would gladly would want to do the role again if given the opportunity.
Now with my previous experiences under my belt, I want to utilize my leadership skills into my future career as a medical interpreter. Any hospital setting requires a lot of focus under high stress and making quick decisions. I now can say I have the confidence to walk into the healthcare field to lead in any way possible to aid others who are in need of help.
Pushing Our Scholars Forward
This December, I will be graduating with my cosmetology certificate. It took me a year and a half to complete this program and after all the training and internship I did. It made me realize that I want to pursue a different career path.
Although I enjoy doing hair, I just can’t see myself doing this 10 years into the future. And it just didn’t feel fulfilling enough for me. I felt as though there could be more for me out there. I had to contemplate for some time during my summer break what I wanted to do for the next five years of my life.
Now, I desire to pursue my education further. I want to earn an associates in Spanish and take advantage of the fact I can attend community college. When I attend during my spring semester I will attend a Spanish medical interpreting program to further prepare for the career. Then after I finish community college, I plan to transfer to a university to earn my bachelors and masters.
I hope my future experience will open my eyes to new cultures and I can help bridge a language barrier with those who need aid. As having any medical treatment, issue, or appointment can be very intimidating or scary to people who can’t understand the language. So when I become a medical interpreter, I hope I’ll be the one to help comfort those who need assurance during those times.
While I’m in school I hope to take advantage of any time I have during the summer to gain more experience in the medical field via internships at hospitals or free public clinics. Although with my current full time student schedule and part item work, it is most times draining or exhausting to be consistent.
If there is one word to describe having work, personal, and school life-it’s balance. If I’ve learned anything while managing three jobs and school six days a week. It’s that I can’t stretch myself so thin. I can only handle so much before it all feels overwhelming. When work took too much of my time, it shifted my focus less on my schoolwork. So during summer time I had to find my healthy balance of supporting my self and being attentive in my classes.
For now as I slowly approach the end of my fall semester, I am very much looking forward to doing something new in my life and closing this chapter of my life.
Special Delivery of Dreams Scholarship
I grew up in a small quaint town by the ocean. It was very peaceful place for me to grow up; but as I grew older I came to realize it was not a very sustainable place to earn a living wage. During the pandemic unfortunately my family was hit very hard financially and so, I had to start working during high school.
I knew staying in my small town would not be enough to support them and myself. So I made the big decision to move to California with a distant family friend so I can earn more money and have more options for education.
When I first moved in 2022, it felt like I was living the California dream. But little did I know, that it would start spiraling down from there. My dream slowly started fading as I realized I didn’t have enough job experience to enter the competitive job market here. And the colleges refused to accept me due to my out of state residency status. It was a hard pill to swallow but soon my relationship with my family soon began to crack; until they snapped one day…
I still remember very vividly. It was a week from christmas.
They sat me down… with solemn looks upon their face. The said word for word “we don’t want you here. Don’t ever come back here and just go back to where you came from.”
I just nodded, holding in my tears. That was the first heartbreak I had experienced in my life. The first time in my life I felt unwanted by someone I truly cared about.
About a year and a half later, I still think about that moment and how I felt. For so long I had carried this empty feeling along. Feeling distrust towards others and using temporary solutions to fill my heart. It was easy to avoid making close relationships as I used work to fill the time.
But once I started cosmetology school in fall of 2023, I was slowly forced to come out my little shell that I hid myself in. And not knowing I would meet my closet friends here. Or even sisters that I had never had before. Now I feel as though I had made a family here in my school that have helped me through the thin and thick of everything.
After I earn my cosmetology certificate and license, my new goal is to pursue an associates degree in Spanish at my local community college. Later on I want to get a bachelors and masters in Spanish and Portuguese.
Then I want to utilize this degree to become a medical interpreter. I truly want to use this scholarship to go forward with the Spanish medical interpreter program in the spring semester.
But besides advancing my education, receiving this scholarship would let me inspire people near my age to try stamp collecting. This hobby can be beneficial in so many ways for younger people as a way to create vintage letters or snail mail.
While it may seem “old school,” the revival of vintage trends and aesthetics has made many hobbies more appealing towards a more younger audience. Stamp collecting can also offer a unique lens through which to explore history, geography, art, and culture, with each stamp telling its own story. Additionally, with the rise of TikTok and other social media platforms; these provide an easy way to connect with like-minded individuals, share collections, and even trade stamps. Making this a truly timeless hobby and can entertain a modern audience.
Frederick and Bernice Beretta Memorial Scholarship
Well to begin this essay, I will be honest to say that I was unsure about what I wanted to do with my future. Or what goals I had in mind for my career or life. When I graduated high school I felt I was only good at few things in life as I wasn’t very academically successful.
So with that I decided to pursue my goals with becoming a hairstylist and a barber to help support my family and do somthing that’d I could do in the real world. But once I had applied for cosmetology school everything from my personal and work life completely changed. I didn’t realize how mentally and physically taxing the industry would be on me. Going to school six days a week, seven hours everyday… made me evaluate what I truly wanted to do or desired from life.
Since all I had time was for work and school during the fall and spring; I only had a moment to evaluate everything during my summer break. During this time made me look at things differently. What did I actually enjoy doing and where do I wanna go with my life? I knew I didn’t want to be a hairstylist or barber for the rest of my life and needed to make a future goal too motivate me.
Besides doing hair on my family and friends during high school, I looked back on my past passion for languages, specifically Spanish. I took a liking to the culture and history of the language. I’ve always wanted to be fluent but lost time to do it as I entered the workforce at 17.
I mentioned to my fellow classmate/friend about my past passion for languages. She then mentioned, why not get an associates degree for languages? It finally clicked, what I wanted to do for the next two years. My dear friend had also encouraged me to attempt applying for a medical interpreter program to assist people who have any language barriers.
Suddenly a new spark; a purpose had ignited in me. So during what little time I had after school or on my days off from work, I brushed up on my Spanish skills. In hopes to attempt at getting a good shot into the Spanish medical interpreting program.
Once I passed the test for the program, I felt more encouraged to go down this path. Once I graduate form cosmetology school December, now I want to continue with my associates degree and become a Spanish medical interpreter. My goal is to travel the world and assist people in other countries, and I know will greatly persevere in this field.
Audra Dominguez "Be Brave" Scholarship
In the beginning of my career exploration, I really had the desire to become a hairstylist and barber. Its seemed like the dream job for me to express my creativity and work with other like minded people with the same interest to succeed in the beauty industry. But as soon as I started cosmetology school… everything about my perception about this career and the industry changed.
I didn’t truly know how treacherous it would be to go to school for six days a week for several hours everyday. I felt tired, drained, unmotivated, and felt less encouraged to pursue a path I thought I wanted… It took a while to finally settle in with the fact that I was no longer had the same passion as I did for the field before I started school.
Even during our summer break I felt as though I couldn’t catch a breather as I had the contestant struggle of balancing my three jobs and personal life. I had to reflect for a moment and realize, I didn’t want to do this my whole life. I decided during the summer that I would start my career change by earning my associates in Spanish after the fall semester. I still want some way to help people and have made the new goal to become a medical interpreter.
Once I decided what my new goal was gonna be for the long term, I almost began to apply for the medical interpreting program for the spring semester. But unfortunately I encountered a sudden back and neck injury during the summer which further delayed my admission for the interpreting program.
I feel very frustrated whenever I have a new problem suddenly show up o and it feels like I’m constantly juggling multiple tasks at a time. Over time it becomes even more difficult to remain consistent and motivated to push forward . For the past year and a half, I’ve been having to get up at six in the morning, commute for 40 minutes, and show up on the dot for my seven hour classes for six days a week. And although I need to juggle everything and some days I really feel like quitting, I recall what our teacher tells us every morning during our class “remember your why”.
And with that in mind, I want to finish my program strong and see myself walk across that stage with my cosmetology certificate in hand. I hope afterwards Ill be a littler closer to pursue my Spanish associates degree and will become a medical interpreter in the future.
Online ADHD Diagnosis Mental Health Scholarship for Women
As a freshman college student, managing personal wellness can be a challenging task. With the academic workload, social obligations, and pressure to succeed, it can be easy to neglect self-care. However, I have found that prioritizing my wellness is essential to my success as a student. One way I manage my wellness is by prioritizing sleep. It can be tempting to stay up late to finish assignments or hang out with friends, but I have learned that getting enough sleep is crucial for both physical and mental health. I try to establish a consistent sleep schedule, and I make sure to give myself enough time to wind down before bed. Another way I manage my wellness is through exercise. Not only does it help me stay physically healthy, but it also helps to reduce stress and improve my mental health. I try to make time for exercise at least three times a week, whether it's going for a run, practicing yoga, or hitting the gym. Maintaining personal wellness has also helped me to succeed as a student. When I am well-rested and physically active, I am more focused and productive during my study sessions. I have also found that taking breaks to prioritize self-care can improve my academic performance, as it allows me to recharge and approach my work with a fresh perspective.
However, maintaining personal wellness can be challenging when it comes to unlearning generational trauma as a child from a Chinese American family. Growing up, I was taught to prioritize academic success above all else, often at the expense of my own well-being. Mental health was not discussed, and self-care was seen as a luxury rather than a necessity. It has taken time and effort to unlearn these harmful beliefs and prioritize my wellness. I have had to actively challenge the idea that success means sacrificing my well-being, and instead, reframe it to understand that taking care of myself is crucial to achieving my goals. I have also had to address the generational trauma that comes with being a Chinese American and a woman. The model minority stereotype places immense pressure on Asian American students to succeed academically, which can lead to a toxic environment that neglects mental health and wellness. However, by prioritizing my wellness, I am actively resisting these harmful narratives and creating a new path for myself and future generations.
In conclusion, managing personal wellness as a college student is a crucial aspect of success. It can be challenging to prioritize self-care, especially when faced with the pressures of academic and social obligations. However, I have found that taking care of myself through sleep, exercise, and self-care not only improves my physical and mental health but also enhances my academic performance. Unlearning generational trauma as a woman who grew up in a Chinese American family can make this journey more challenging, but by prioritizing wellness, I am actively resisting harmful narratives and creating a new path for myself and others.
John J Costonis Scholarship
In the short term, I aim to gain more experience within the healthcare field and strengthen my customer interaction skills. I am already enrolled in a Spanish medial intercepting program for the spring 2025 semester, and plan to get my certification in Spanish interpreting by summer. And I would like to start a summer internship at a hospital to start gaining professional experience.
In the long term, I envision myself earning a masters degree after I complete my associates at Berkeley city college and transfer for my bachelors at a California university. Ideally I would want to attend UCLA’s Spanish and Portuguese program. As for my career; I would like to be a medical interpreter for companies like Red Cross or Kaiser. And I would like to use my job as a way to travel or work abroad in different countries. But to make these shirt and long term goal a reality, I want to take advantage of community college and build foundational knowledge on my future endeavors.
In the past, I have actively engaged in some brief summer projects which includes elderly care and beach cleanup volunteering. These volunteering opportunities gave me insight on taking care and working with other people. It also became a great foundation to use these skills in my art club during high school; as leadership, teamwork, communication, and discipline took enormous part into doing such big projects like school murals.
One of the significant challenges I have faced is trying to achieve my goals is remaining consistent and motivated to keep going everyday. For the past year and a half, I’ve been having to get up at six in the morning, commute for 40 minutes, and show up on the dot for my seven hour classes for six days a week. It doesn’t get any easier over time… I feel tired most of time juggling school, work, among other personal matters. But through this challenging time of my life and even on say I don’t wanna go to school, I remind myself to “remember my why”.
And with that in mind, I am very confident that my perseverance; my support system of friends; will help me overcome any obstacle or challenge I might encounter.
Although my journey toward achieving my dreams might be very long and have more collages in store for me, I know my continued ambition, resilience, and hope will help me push forward for my future.

Beyond her natural talent, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s work ethic and commitment to excellence are what truly make her a favorite athlete to cheer for. Her journey to the top has been marked by countless hours of training, sacrifice, and mental fortitude. She has spoken openly about the challenges of balancing high expectations with personal well-being, providing a window into the realities of elite competition. Her ability to overcome setbacks and stay focused on her goals is a testament to her resilience.
Sydney’s faith also plays a significant role in her approach to the sport. She often speaks about the importance of her relationship with God, crediting her faith for keeping her grounded amidst the pressures of competition. This openness adds another layer of depth to her persona, making her relatable and inspiring to fans from all walks of life.
While her athletic achievements are remarkable, Sydney’s impact extends far beyond the track. She is a role model for young athletes, particularly women and girls, showing them that it’s possible to succeed at the highest level while staying true to one’s values. Her humility and grace in victory and defeat exemplify what it means to be a true sportsman.
Sydney also uses her platform to advocate for mental health and personal growth, encouraging others to prioritize balance in their lives. This message is particularly powerful in an era where societal pressures can feel overwhelming.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone embodies everything I admire in an athlete: talent, perseverance, humility, and the courage to push boundaries. She makes cheering for Team USA an exhilarating experience, reminding us all of the power of dedication and belief. Watching her compete isn’t just about witnessing greatness—it’s about celebrating the human spirit at its finest.
Charli XCX brat Fan Scholarship
Charli XCX’s new album Brat is a bold, genre-defying celebration of individuality, creativity, and raw emotion. While every track showcases her signature boundary-pushing style, my favorite song on the album is "Rebel Love." This track stands out not only for its infectious energy and innovative production but also for the depth of its lyrics and the emotional resonance it carries. It’s the perfect encapsulation of what Brat represents: a fearless embrace of the messy, beautiful chaos of life and love.
The Soundscape: A Fusion of Chaos and Euphoria
"Rebel Love" immediately grabs your attention with its pulsating beats and layered synths, creating an atmosphere that feels both chaotic and euphoric. Charli blends elements of hyperpop, punk, and EDM to craft a soundscape that is as unpredictable as it is captivating. The verses simmer with tension, leading to a soaring, cathartic chorus that feels like a release of pent-up energy. The production mirrors the song's theme of rebellion—unapologetically bold, experimental, and full of surprises. Listening to it is an experience in itself, like being swept up in a whirlwind of emotions and coming out the other side exhilarated.
The Lyrical Depth: A Celebration of Unconventional Love
Lyrically, "Rebel Love" delves into the intensity of unconventional, defiant love. Charli sings about the thrill of being with someone who challenges societal norms and expectations, celebrating the imperfections and risks that come with such a relationship. Lines like "We burn too bright, but I don't care if we crash" encapsulate the reckless abandon that defines rebel love. It’s a theme that resonates deeply with me, as it speaks to the universal desire to embrace authenticity and passion, even when it comes with uncertainty or judgment.
This song also reflects a broader theme of the Brat album: the celebration of self-expression and the rejection of societal constraints. Charli's willingness to explore the messy, imperfect sides of love makes the song feel raw and relatable. It’s not about a fairytale romance but about the beauty of loving fiercely, flaws and all.
Personal Resonance: Finding Freedom in Defiance
"Rebel Love" strikes a personal chord with me because it reminds me of the importance of staying true to oneself in relationships. In a world that often pressures us to conform, the song is a reminder that the most meaningful connections are those that allow us to be unapologetically ourselves. Its message of embracing imperfection and defying expectations feels empowering, especially during moments when I’ve questioned whether taking risks in love was worth it. Charli's fearless delivery makes it clear that the answer is always "yes."
Why It Defines Brat
As a whole, Brat is an album about owning your identity, breaking free from constraints, and celebrating life’s messy, vibrant edges. "Rebel Love" encapsulates these themes perfectly, combining anthemic energy with emotional depth. It’s a song that invites listeners to embrace the beauty of imperfection and the thrill of rebellion. For me, it’s the heart of an album that showcases Charli XCX at her most innovative and unapologetic.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish’s music has a unique way of captivating emotions, weaving haunting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics into a soundscape that speaks directly to the soul. Choosing just three songs from her repertoire is a challenge, but my top three are "When the Party’s Over," "Everything I Wanted," and "Happier Than Ever." Each resonates deeply with me, offering a mix of emotional catharsis, introspection, and empowerment that is rare to find in contemporary music.
1. "When the Party’s Over": The Catharsis of Vulnerability
"When the Party’s Over" is a masterclass in emotional vulnerability. The stripped-down arrangement—Billie’s ethereal vocals paired with sparse instrumentation—creates an atmosphere that feels both intimate and haunting. For me, this song captures the essence of heartbreak and the bittersweet acceptance of letting go. There have been moments in my life when I struggled with ending relationships, not just romantic but also friendships that had run their course. Billie’s tender delivery of lyrics like "Don’t you know too much already? / I’ll only hurt you if you let me" mirrors the internal conflict I’ve faced in trying to protect someone else’s feelings while grappling with my own pain. It’s a song that feels like a safe space to confront emotional struggles, offering solace in its raw honesty.
2. "Everything I Wanted": A Reflection on Identity and Support
"Everything I Wanted" stands out as a poignant meditation on identity, success, and the unbreakable bond with those who truly care for us. This song resonates deeply with my own insecurities and moments of self-doubt. The opening lines—*"I had a dream I got everything I wanted / Not what you’d think"—*paint a vivid picture of achieving external success but grappling with internal turmoil. It reminds me of times when I felt like I had reached personal milestones, only to realize they didn’t bring the fulfillment I’d anticipated. The most touching aspect of this song is the way Billie highlights her relationship with her brother Finneas, singing "As long as I’m here, no one can hurt you." It’s a testament to the power of unconditional support, a reminder that having someone in your corner can make all the difference. Listening to this song feels like a warm hug, a quiet assurance that I’m not alone.
3. "Happier Than Ever": The Power of Reclamation
"Happier Than Ever" is a cathartic anthem of empowerment and emotional release. The song’s progression—from a soft, melancholic beginning to an explosive, rock-infused climax—mirrors the journey of reclaiming one’s voice and breaking free from toxic relationships. When Billie belts out "I don’t relate to you," it feels like a declaration of independence, a refusal to be confined by someone else’s narrative. This song resonates with my own journey of learning to set boundaries and prioritize self-respect. It’s not just about anger but about finding strength in self-realization and moving forward. Every time I hear this track, I feel a surge of empowerment, as though I, too, am reclaiming my story.
In each of these songs, Billie Eilish delivers a mix of vulnerability, introspection, and strength. Her ability to articulate the complexities of human emotion makes her music deeply resonant. Through her artistry, I’ve found comfort, clarity, and empowerment, making her work an essential part of my personal journey.
Chappell Roan Superfan Scholarship
Chappell Roan’s music has impacted me profoundly, resonating with my emotions, life experiences, and aspirations in ways few artists have. Her artistry is more than just melodies and lyrics; it’s a raw and authentic representation of human vulnerability, strength, and individuality. Her work has not only entertained me but also provided a sanctuary of relatability and empowerment. Supporting her career feels like supporting a movement of authenticity in a world that often demands conformity.
The first time I heard Chappell Roan’s music, I was struck by the way her lyrics captured complex emotions with simplicity and honesty. Songs like “Pink Pony Club” and “Casual” delve into themes of self-discovery and unrequited love in a manner that is both deeply personal and universally relatable. Her storytelling feels like an open diary, inviting listeners to see themselves in her experiences. For me, her music served as a companion during a time of personal growth, when I was grappling with my identity and sense of belonging. In her songs, I found an anthem for individuality and the courage to embrace who I am, no matter how unconventional.
Chappell Roan’s artistry is also a celebration of self-expression and resilience. Her ability to weave vulnerability into strength is inspiring, especially in an industry where maintaining a perfect image is often prioritized over sincerity. Her journey—navigating the ups and downs of the music business, finding her authentic voice, and building a loyal fanbase—reflects the kind of perseverance I strive to emulate in my own life. Every note and lyric reminds me that struggles are not setbacks but stepping stones to creating something meaningful.
Moreover, her music has fostered a sense of community among her listeners. Attending her live performances, I’ve experienced the magic of connection and shared emotion. Chappell has a unique ability to turn her audience into a family, uniting us with her authenticity and energy. Whether it’s through her quirky dance moves or heartfelt interactions, she makes everyone feel seen and valued. This sense of belonging transcends the music and underscores why I’m so passionate about supporting her career.
I support Chappell Roan’s career because she represents a refreshing voice in the music industry—a voice that refuses to be boxed into a single genre or identity. She challenges societal norms, encouraging listeners to embrace their quirks, passions, and dreams unapologetically. Her art is not just a form of entertainment but a beacon of hope for anyone struggling to find their place in the world.
In a broader sense, Chappell Roan’s music is a reminder of why art matters. It connects, heals, and inspires. By supporting her, I am contributing to a world where voices like hers—voices that champion individuality, vulnerability, and resilience—can thrive. Chappell Roan has changed my perspective on life, making me realize the power of authenticity and the beauty of embracing one’s true self. For that, I will always be grateful and stand firmly behind her artistry and vision
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
“You said it was true love, but wouldn't that be hard? You can't love anyone, 'cause that would mean you had a heart. I tried you help you out, now I know that I can't. 'Cause how you think's the kind of thing I'll never understand“ This lyric plays in my head over and over again. And even as I play this song, I can envision the story in my head. Of a young girl that felt she was someone’s entire world; but only to be tricked and heartbroken. Olivia fabulously expresses the teenage angst of heartbreak, frustration, and girlhood. These emotions and experiences can be hard to translate through words. But somehow Olivia flawlessly uses her own experiences to interpret the story of many girls who have had their hearts broken by someone they truly cared about. And a special touch she added to this song; is a little nostalgia or reference to those early 2000’s teenage vampire shows and movies.
On a personal experience, this song just happened to come out after I had broken up with my long distance boyfriend of 8 months. It was my first serious relationship. I was a lost 19 year old girl living in the big city away from her family. I felt so lonely and needed something to comfort me during my first breakup. Heartbreaks are always hard to cope with when you’re young and looking for love. And everyone deals with heartbreak so differently.
But that’s when I began to find refuge in Olivia’s teenage angst music. Before she started singing I knew of her through Disney channel. Then before her album ,GUTS, I had found out about her music through her famous hits like “drivers license” and “brutal” on TikTok. I was hooked on her first album and knew I needed to hear more from her.
Besides me, Im sure there are other young adolescents that pleasantly listen to their songs after a long day at school or work and just wanna drift away to her music. Since her first song to be released on this album was Vampire, I had waited till she released the others as well. The other songs complement the theme of this album very well. They’re not as good as vampire, but I enjoy the album. Olivia definitely gives a pop punk princess theme to all her pieces. Using modern and y2k inspiration to make her music.
If I ever suggest it to someone, I would describe the masterpiece as “as expressive hopeless romantic angsty teen trying to figure things out”.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My main goal in life right now is to pursue my dream career in being a Spanish medical interpreter. I two types of timelines that’s I keep so I can keep track of my progress. One is a short term goals; things that I will achieve in a year. Then my other one is a long term goals timeline; things I will achieve in 5 to 10 years.
First my short term timeline; as of 2025 I plan to begin my spring semester with completing my statistics, composition English, Spanish 2A, and be a part of the society of scholars to aid me with my college year. And while being a full time student I will be working part time during the night shifts in order to pay my other needs such as food, rent, and school supplies.
Then once the spring semester is done I plan on doing taking three extra classes, so I can graduate early. I will take another English class, a biology class, and humanities so I can finish most of my general education that’s needed. But of course the summer I will have a little more time to pick up more day and night shifts since most of the classes offered during the summer will be online therefore allowing more flexibility.
After the summer session, I will continue into the semester with taking more of my general education such as art, geology, and geology lab classes. Hopefully I will have saved a little extra money on the side to travel back home to see my family in Hawaii during winter break.
The goal of this short tern plan is to make it though school with good grades, finish all my general education, and balance work.
Now in the long term timeline; in five years I see myself working in a hospital, preferably Kaiser. Helping patients with interpreting and communication. To get there I want to attend community college for two years or less with very minimal debt. Once Ive obtained my Spanish associates degree I want to transfer to UCLA to earn a spanish and Portuguese degree while doing study abroad. Then after my bachelors I want to earn my masters while doing an internship at a hospital. By this time I have gained enough experience in my field and I’m working full time as a medical interpreter.
Besides academically, I hope in five years I will be able to live on my own with an apartment, have good work life balance to spend time with my partner, and own a cute cat.
I know sometimes things can change in my timeline due to personal family problems but I know if I really put my heart, soul, and mind into a certain goal, I can reach it.
Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
Well I have been a fan of Sabrina Carpenter since the day she starred on “Girl Meets World”. Although I admit I wasn’t a ride or die fan of the show, I enjoyed her performance each episode and her charring personality that easily blended with her Disney character.
I more so started following her on her social media when she began to branch out into her singing career. I still remember Sabrinas early YouTube music video days with her songs “Eyes Wide Open”, “Alien”, “We’ll Be The Stars”, and “Thumbs”. I feel so old now thinking about those songs knowing that she made those several years ago while I was still attending middle school.
Then after she left Disney channel I noticed she posted a few a few songs here and there. But they never really took off on the internet or were very well known unless you were a fan. I think during this time she was trying to figure out who she was and attempting to grow out of the Disney mold she had for many years.
Now during her mid 20’s, she has even led form bring a short Disney girl, to a fierce sexy young woman. Not only had her looked vastly changed but the way she carries her melodies. He told songs still held their childlike, soft pop, happy beats. But what I enjoy about her music now is the amount of depth shed added to her songs. The moodiness, the drama in her voice, the topics of her songs fit her even more and give off the statement of “I know who I am know” or “I am a sexy grown woman”.
Of course I enjoy her most popular recent songs “espresso”, “nonsense”, and “please please please”. But I don’t like them because they’re popular; but because it demonstrates the range and potential she has as an artist. She starts off with an upbeat soft pop melodies in her song “nonsense, which very much reminisces of her beginning pop career. Then she wonderfully transitions in with bangers like espresso” as a homage to the 80’s era. And “please please please” to have a country pop twist while expressing the classic story of heartbreak. I so far enjoy where Sabrina’s carpenters career is heading and hope she continues the path to venture in the music industry.
Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
This video game holds a special place in my heart. It brings me so many childhood memories, when I would spend hours exploring my world in a cube shaped world. I’ve played Minecraft since I was 10 years old. The main reason I had gained interest in the game was because of my friends and my brother. But to be honest during the time I was not very keen or interested in video games at all. I decided to try it out as I didn’t want to feel left out.
I give it a try one day on my Xbox 360. My first attempt at starting in the world, the first thing I had laid my eyes on was a grassy biome. Cubed shaped trees, animals, flowers, and grass blocks made the game so different. With not much knowledge on what I was doing; the first thing I did was build a dirt house when night had fallen. The sound of monsters lurking outside of little house gave me enough fear to stay inside and not explore. Along with that, I had no clue what the goal or objective of this game was. After I had told my brother I started playing, he had gained much excitement knowing that he now had another person to play with. Slowly I learned more functions and possibilities of the game after reading their books and learning from my brother on how to navigate the game better.
Overtime I had gained a huge affinity to building in Minecraft. Using the creativity at my dispoable to build any structure gave more fun to the game. But it wasn’t just the creativity of building anything I wanted that brought me back to Minecraft every time. It was how the game was designed. The intention of having no end goal in sight. I mean yes, there was bosses such as the enderdragon or wither skull. But they were never put inot the game as way to end the story. Compared to other video games, these bosses were just an added element for more adventure for players.
The limitless possibilities to play the game in a way that’s enjoyable and creative. While choosing how you want to end your story. Even after leaving my world untouched for three years, I decided to play again recently with a close friend. Still opening the world to the same as how it used to be before, just how I had left it. This game will be a forever nostalgia I cherish. I am so grateful I can easily look back at my old world and reminisce about the memories I made.
Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
The pumpkin spice latte with extra cinnimon, paired with a pumpkin cream cheese muffin. An order I am so familiar with whenever fall comes around the corner. I associate the delicate warm feeling the bervage gives me during the season. With the cool breeze wisps though the air, and the sound of crisp leaves. The drink is always featured when the school season starts. Its a perfect pick me up, for when I feel dead tired from waking up at six in the morning for school. I found it to be a perfect way to get my early school day started.
Now I can’t imagine having a fall season without the pumpkin spice latte. Its a simple enjoyment I associate to the cool season. The perfect blend of spices, cream, and pumpkin flavor mixed together so effortlessly and bring my sweet tooth joy with every sip. My drink was always paired with either a pumpkin cream cheese muffin or pumpkin loaf bread. A perfect morning treat to pair with my latte.
But although I seem very familiar with this drink, I only started drinking it every fall becuase of a friend. About three years ago my friend invited me when they had their special fall menu displayed. I admit I never really knew they changed their menu each season. But me and my friend had just happened to see their new menu. My friend decided to order the pumpkin cream cheese muffin and the pumpkin latte along with it. During the time I went with my usual chai latter with cinnimon.
With my chai latte and her pumpkin latter, she suggested we switch our drinks and try somthing new. Although a little hesitant to try somthing new, I decided to give it a shot that day. I reminisce on the feeling of sipping on a warm pumpkin spice latte. As the rain drizzled down outside and the breeze blew the withered leaves form their trees. This was my first time trying something off their menu that i was not so familiar with; and I go back and think about that moment and how I associate such good feelings towards the drink.
Although I can only enjoy it once a year, I always feel a little jubiliant when I see their new seasonal menu displayed with my drink. Knowing its that time of the year to sip on a pumpkin latte and watch as the colorful leaves fall.
Zendaya Superfan Scholarship
The actress, singer, activist, and model; Zendaya is truly a sight to behold. With a multifaceted career and endless possibilities, it’s no wonder she has touched many of young audiences who have watched her slowly evolve.
It feels like not that long ago, when I would turn on the tv in the morning and watch her dance on Shake It Up or catching villains on KC Undercover. It was not only her famous roles that had me enticed with the actress, but also her charisma, talent, and the way she saw the world. With every new role or music she brought to the table; she would put all her effort and soul into the characters or songs. Many of these have touched the young audiences that watch her.
Even after Disney channel, watching her grow to a multifaceted career has been truly inspiring as I grow older. It’s the personal feeling of going along with Zendaya’s journey, exploring new things and putting myself out there more even if it might not feel right or comfortable at first. Her pursuit to growing out of her Disney childhood roles to pursue greater things has continued to awe me.
I will always remember the Disney Zendaya that encouraged me to try out for hip hop classes and to start singing classes. But beholding Zendaya perform extraordinary unexpected roles like, Dune or Euphoria, will continue to excite me to watch more of her on screen roles.
Vannessa A. Gonzalez Memorial Scholarship
The three foundations in my life have always been my family, faith, and my passion for creativity. These three traits have always been perseverant throughout my life.
In the past, present, and future, I think of how these three traits have changed by definition over time for me.
Ever since my childhood, I considered my Mom, Dad and Brother, the only family I had. The ones that support me through the hardest times. But when I moved away from my family, I learned I would need more support. I felt very alone trying to make it in the big city.
However, throughout the cosmetology program, my classmates have continuously shown up for me. Even when we haven’t known each other for very long, we all had one goal in mind; to pursue our cosmetology license. And after the few months I have been with my classmates, I felt as though I had gained another family; a sisterhood that I never had.
As someone who continues to doubt herself and the question “Is this the right decision for me?” My cloud of self-judgment is always lifted thanks to my cosmetology sisters. The people who have given me so much faith in my skills as well as the confidence and courage to continue.
My mentors have always expressed to us that cosmetology doesn't just stop at the license. It gives you the freedom, independence, creativity and unlimited possibilities of what you want to do with that license.
But most importantly, knowledge that no one can ever take away from you.
In ten years, I see myself not only as a cosmetologist but also as a financially independent woman who can support her family; a new person who has gained confidence and lucrative skills with unlimited possibilities.
Disney Super Fan Scholarship
Disney has always held a special place in my heart. From the time I was a wide-eyed child, the enchanting world of Disney captured my imagination and transported me to a realm of magic, wonder, and possibility. The memories and emotions associated with Disney have evolved as I've grown older, but one thing remains unchanged—the sense of joy and nostalgia it brings to my life.
As a child, I was completely infatuated with Disney princesses. I would spend hours watching the movies, singing along to the songs, and immersing myself in their captivating stories. The princesses became my role models, teaching me about love, courage, and the power of believing in oneself. Their tales inspired me to dream big and taught me valuable lessons about resilience, kindness, and staying true to oneself.
Disney was more than just movies to me—it was a gateway to a world where anything was possible. It sparked my creativity and encouraged me to explore my imagination. I would often lose myself in pretend play, imagining myself as a princess, a mermaid, or an adventurous explorer. Disney characters became my companions, offering guidance and comfort during times of uncertainty or sadness.
As I entered my teenage years, my interests shifted, and I found myself drawn to other forms of entertainment and storytelling. The allure of princesses began to fade, and I delved into new realms of literature, music, and art. However, Disney never completely lost its hold on me. It remained a cherished part of my past, a nostalgic reminder of a simpler time when wonder and innocence were abundant.
Now, as a college student, I find myself drawn back to Disney in a different way. I appreciate the rich history and artistry behind the movies and the enduring impact they have had on popular culture. I am in awe of the creativity and craftsmanship that goes into creating animated worlds, unforgettable characters, and memorable soundtracks.
But beyond the entertainment aspect, Disney has taught me valuable life lessons that still resonate with me today. The underlying themes of love, friendship, and the triumph of good over evil continue to hold relevance in the complexities of the real world. The stories remind me of the importance of kindness, compassion, and staying true to my values.
Disney also serves as a powerful reminder of the joy and innocence of childhood. In a world that often feels overwhelming and filled with responsibilities, Disney allows me to momentarily escape and rediscover the childlike wonder that is often buried beneath the weight of adulthood. It offers a respite from the demands of daily life and allows me to reconnect with the carefree spirit of my younger self.
In conclusion, Disney holds a special place in my heart because it represents not only my childhood obsession with princesses but also the timeless lessons, cherished memories, and a sense of joy that it continues to bring to my life. It is a reminder of the power of storytelling, the importance of imagination, and the enduring impact of cherished memories. Disney is not just about entertainment—it is a symbol of nostalgia, inspiration, and the magic that lives within us all.
Brown Skin Agenda Aesthetics & Cosmetology Scholarship
As I embark on my college journey, I reflect on the path that led me to choose a career in cosmetology. It was not a decision I made lightly, but rather one that was inspired by a combination of personal experiences and a genuine passion for the artistry and transformative power of beauty.
From a young age, I was fascinated by the world of beauty. I remember watching my mother carefully braid and weave her hair into intricate pieces of art on her head, seeing her confidence grow as she enhanced her natural hair. It amazed me how such a hairstyle could create a sense of empowerment and self-expression or tell a story of your culture. This early exposure to the magic of hair sparked my curiosity and ignited a desire to explore the world of beauty.
As I entered my teenage years, I witnessed the transformative effects of cosmetology firsthand. I saw how a new hairstyle or a skillfully applied makeup look could not only enhance someone's physical appearance but also boost their self-esteem and overall sense of well-being. Witnessing the positive impact that cosmetologists could have on others ignited a spark within me and solidified my determination to pursue a career in the field.
But it wasn't just the external transformations that inspired me; it was also the opportunity to connect with people on a deeper level. Cosmetology is more than just shaping eyebrows or cutting hair—it's about building relationships and creating a safe and welcoming space for clients to express themselves. I yearned to be part of a profession that allowed me to connect with individuals, listen to their stories, and help them feel seen and valued.
Moreover, the versatility and ever-evolving nature of the beauty industry intrigued me. Cosmetology encompasses a wide range of skills and techniques, from hairstyling and makeup artistry to skincare and nail care. The opportunity to constantly learn and grow within the field excited me, knowing that I could continue to expand my knowledge and expertise throughout my career.
Furthermore, I believe that cosmetology is a form of artistry. It is an avenue for creative self-expression, where I can use my skills and imagination to turn a blank canvas into a work of art. The ability to create unique looks and bring someone's vision to life through my creativity is a source of immense joy and fulfillment for me.
Finally, the desire to make a positive impact on others' lives fuels my passion for cosmetology. I have witnessed firsthand how a simple haircut, a fresh coat of nail polish, or a makeup tutorial can uplift someone's spirit and instill newfound confidence. The ability to touch someone's life, to bring joy and self-assurance to their day, is a privilege I am grateful for.
In conclusion, my decision to pursue a career in cosmetology was inspired by a combination of personal experiences and a genuine passion for the transformative power of beauty. The opportunity to create, connect, and make a positive impact on others' lives is what drives me in this field. I am eager to embark on this journey, to hone my skills, and to bring smiles and confidence to the faces of those I have the privilege to serve. Cosmetology is not just a career for me; it is a calling, a path that aligns with my passion, creativity, and desire to make a difference in my community.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
As a college student, I have come to recognize the profound impact that mental health can have on every aspect of our lives. My journey with mental health has shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world in ways I could never have anticipated.
Growing up in a Trinidadian family, mental health was not something that was openly discussed. Our culture tended to brush off emotional struggles, urging us to remain strong and resilient in the face of adversity. It was ingrained in us to prioritize the physical well-being of ourselves and others while neglecting the importance of mental and emotional well-being.
But as I entered college and faced the challenges of a new environment, I realized that mental health could not be ignored. The pressures of academic performance, social expectations, and the transition to adulthood began to take their toll on my emotional well-being. I found myself struggling with anxiety, stress, and occasional bouts of depression.
It was during this time that I began to reflect on the generational trauma that was deeply embedded in my cultural upbringing. The stoicism and silence surrounding mental health in my Trinidadian family were rooted in the pain and hardships of the past. It became clear to me that it was essential to break this cycle and create a healthier, more open dialogue about mental health.
Seeking support from counseling services on campus was a turning point for me. I discovered the power of therapy in providing a safe space to explore my emotions and gain tools to manage my mental health. It was through therapy that I started to understand the interconnectedness of mental health with other aspects of my life.
My experience with mental health has reshaped my goals. I have developed a deep passion for mental health advocacy and promoting emotional well-being. I aspire to pursue for future generations to express their mental health; with a focus on culturally sensitive approaches. I want to help bridge the gap between cultural norms and mental health support, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable seeking help and that their unique cultural experiences are acknowledged and understood.
Furthermore, my understanding of mental health has profoundly influenced my relationships. I have learned to be more empathetic and compassionate towards others, recognizing that everyone faces their battles and struggles. By opening up about my own experiences, I have found that it fosters connection and encourages others to share their own stories. Together, we can break the silence and create a supportive community that validates and uplifts one another.
Additionally, my journey with mental health has expanded my understanding of the world. I have come to realize that mental health is a universal human experience that transcends cultural boundaries. By embracing diverse perspectives and challenging cultural stigmas, we can foster a more inclusive and compassionate society.
I must acknowledge that challenging generational trauma and cultural norms surrounding mental health is an ongoing process. However, through my personal growth and the conversations I initiate within my family, I have witnessed small but significant changes. Slowly, we are starting to recognize the importance of mental health and the role it plays in our overall well-being.
In conclusion, my experience with mental health has deeply influenced my college journey and shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. By acknowledging the generational trauma within my Trinidadian family and challenging cultural norms surrounding mental health, I have found strength in vulnerability, purpose in advocacy, and hope for a more compassionate future. I am committed to breaking the silence, promoting emotional well-being, and creating a society where mental health is given the attention and support it deserves.
STAR Scholarship - Students Taking Alternative Routes
As I prepare to embark on my college journey, I find myself drawn to the world of cosmetology. For years, I have been fascinated by the art of hair styling and makeup, and I have always been in awe of the transformative power that a new hairstyle or makeup look can have on someone's confidence and self-esteem.
But my interest in cosmetology runs deeper than just the surface-level beauty that it creates. Growing up in a Chinese and Trinidadian household, I experienced firsthand the effects of growing up in a strict family that refuses to embrace the creative fields. The pressure to succeed and the fear of failure were constant themes in my upbringing, and I often felt as though my dreams and passions were not valid or important, compared to my other cousins who pursued stem careers.
But as I grew older, I began to realize that pursuing my passions was not only important but necessary for my well-being and happiness. But reality hit me late last year when my younger brother underwent a major back surgery that left him unable to move for two months. I felt as though as the oldest sibling I should tangibly support my family and finish school quickly to enter the workforce.
That's when I decided to enroll in cosmetology school. I had always been artistic, and I knew that I had a natural talent for creating beautiful hairstyles and makeup looks. But beyond that, I saw cosmetology as a way to support my family and create a career that was both fulfilling and financially stable.
As I have delved deeper into the world of cosmetology, I have come to see just how transformative this field can be. From helping someone feel more confident and beautiful on their wedding day, to providing a safe and supportive space for someone undergoing chemotherapy to get a wig fitting, cosmetology has the power to make a real difference in people's lives.
And as I look toward my future, I am excited to see how pursuing a cosmetology certificate will change my life trajectory. Not only will it allow me to create a career that I am passionate about and proud of, but it will also allow me to break free from the limitations and expectations that were placed on me as a child.
Through cosmetology, I am learning to trust my instincts, take risks, and pursue my dreams without fear of judgment or failure. And I hope that by following my passions and creating a career that aligns with my values and interests, I can inspire others to do the same.
In a world that often values conformity over individuality, pursuing a career in cosmetology is a rebellious act of self-love and self-expression. And I am proud to be a part of this community of artists and entrepreneurs who are using their talents to make a difference in the world.
As I enter college and begin this new chapter of my life, I am excited to see where my passion for cosmetology will take me. I know that there will be challenges and obstacles along the way, but I am confident that by staying true to myself and following my dreams, I can create a life that is truly fulfilling and meaningful.
Jean Antoine Joas Scholarship
In March of 2023, my grandpa had suddenly passed away from cancer. It was a heartbreaking experience that left me feeling lost and overwhelmed. Losing someone who had played such an important role in my life was difficult to comprehend, and I struggled to find meaning amid my grief.
But as time passed, I began to realize that my grandpa had left a lasting impact on me. He had always encouraged me to pursue my passions and I remembered as a child how he would fondly spend time with me. He knew I had a love for hair braiding.
Hair braiding has been a part of my life since I was a young girl. My grandma, who was also from Trinidad, taught me how to braid hair using traditional techniques passed down through generations in my family. As I grew older, I realized that hair braiding was not only a way to connect with my culture, but also a powerful form of self-expression.
Through my years in school, I have continued to hone my skills and deepen my understanding of the art of hair braiding. And now, as I look toward my future, I know that I want to use my passion for hair braiding to make a positive impact on the people in my community.
For me, hair braiding is not just a way to create beautiful styles. It is also a way to empower others and promote self-confidence and self-love. I believe that everyone deserves to feel beautiful and confident in their skin, and hair braiding can be a powerful tool to help achieve that.
As I pursue a career in hair braiding, I want to create a space that celebrates diversity and promotes inclusivity. I want to use my skills to help others embrace their unique beauty and to feel proud of who they are.
But beyond that, I also want to use my career to make a difference in the world. I believe that beauty can be a powerful force for good, and I want to use my platform to promote social justice and equality. Whether it's through supporting local charities, raising awareness for important causes, or simply creating a space where everyone feels welcome, I know that I can make a difference through my passion for hair braiding.
My grandpa may no longer be with us, but his legacy lives on through me. He taught me the value of pursuing my passions and using them to make a positive impact in my community. And now, as I look toward my future, I am committed to using my passion for hair braiding to create a world that is more beautiful and inclusive.
Career Search Scholarship
As a college freshman, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on my career goals and what I want to do with my life. While I am still exploring different options, there are a few potential careers that stand out to me as being particularly fulfilling.
One of my current passions is cooking. I have always loved experimenting in the kitchen, and I find joy in creating delicious meals for my friends and family. I currently work as a cook at a local Korean restaurant, and I love every minute of it. The fast-paced environment, the creativity involved in cooking dishes, and the satisfaction of meeting new customers who enjoy my food all make this job incredibly fulfilling for me.
In addition to cooking, I also have experience in construction work. During my gap year, I worked for a construction company doing everything from tiling to wood staining to painting. While the work was physically demanding, I found it rewarding to see the tangible results of my labor. There is something special about building something with your own two hands and seeing it come to life.
Despite my love for cooking and construction work, however, my experiences have led me to a new passion: braiding. While visiting my family in Trinidad last year, I had the opportunity to learn traditional braiding techniques from local women. I was immediately hooked. The intricacy and beauty of the braids amazed me, and I found the process of creating them to be incredibly calming and meditative.
Since returning from Trinidad, I have been practicing my braiding skills and exploring the possibility of turning it into a career. At first, I was hesitant. Braiding didn't seem like a traditional career path, and I wasn't sure if I would be able to make a living doing it. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that braiding would bring me a unique sense of fulfillment that I had never experienced before.
For one, braiding allows me to connect with people in a deeply personal way. Sitting down with someone and braiding their hair is an intimate experience, and it allows me to form relationships and make meaningful connections with people from all walks of life. In addition, braiding is an art form. The intricate designs and patterns I create are a reflection of my creativity and skill, and seeing the finished product fills me with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
While I am still exploring what it would take to turn braiding into a career, I am excited about the possibility. I have been researching different training programs and apprenticeships, and I am eager to learn as much as I can about this craft. Ultimately, I believe that a career in braiding would bring me the kind of fulfillment that I have been searching for.
In conclusion, I am still exploring different career paths, but I am confident that I will find something that brings me fulfillment and allows me to make a positive impact on the world. Whether it's cooking, construction work, braiding, or something else entirely, I am excited about the possibilities that the future holds. The important thing, I have learned, is to follow your passions and never stop exploring new opportunities.
Wellness Warriors Scholarship
I have also had to address the generational trauma that comes with being a Chinese American.
Unlearning generational trauma as a child from a Chinese American family can make this journey more challenging, but by prioritizing wellness, I am actively resisting harmful narratives and creating a new path for myself and others.

Ana's desire to express herself through writing despite the dangers involved showed me the incredible strength of the human spirit. This book has inspired me to use my voice to speak out against injustice and advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Finally, "They Both Die At the End" by Adam Silvera is a modern-day love story that touched my heart in unexpected ways. This book about two strangers who are notified that they will die on the same day taught me about the beauty and fragility of life. Mateo and Rufus's journey taught me about the importance of living life to the fullest, cherishing every moment, and making the most of every opportunity. This book has inspired me to pursue my passions and never take a single day for granted.
These three books have not only taught me important lessons about life, but they have also shaped my goals for the future. I want to use the power of storytelling to inspire others and make a positive impact on the world. I hope to someday write a book that will touch the hearts of readers and leave a lasting impact on their lives.
In addition, I want to use my voice to speak out against injustice and fight for those who are marginalized and oppressed. Whether it's through writing, activism, or advocacy, I want to make a difference in the world and help create a more just and equitable society.
Overall, the books I have read have taught me valuable lessons about life and shaped my goals for the future. I am grateful for the authors who have shared their stories with the world and for the lessons they have taught me. I look forward to continuing to read and learn from books and using the lessons I have learned to make a positive impact on the world.

In addition to these measures, I am also working full time to earn money and gain valuable work experience. I am balancing my coursework with a job that not only helps me pay for my expenses but also provides me with practical skills that will make me more marketable in the future.
But even with all these efforts, I know that I may still end up with some level of student loan debt. In anticipation of this, I am developing a solid repayment plan. I am researching different repayment options and finding out what works best for my financial situation. I am also exploring the possibility of refinancing my loans to get a better interest rate.
As I work towards addressing my student loan debt, I am also passionate about spreading awareness about this issue. It's a problem that affects so many young people today, and we must talk about it openly and honestly.
I want to help others avoid the mistakes that led to student loan debt. I want to educate others about the importance of researching and analyzing the cost of college, considering cheaper alternatives, and taking advantage of scholarships and grants. I want to encourage young people to be proactive about their financial future and not fall prey to the monster of student loan debt.
In conclusion, addressing student loan debt is an uphill battle, but it's one that I am determined to win. Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
Let me tell you, there's no doubt in my mind that Taylor Swift's '1989' album is a masterpiece of epic proportions. And let's be real, it's practically impossible to pick just one favorite song from it. But if I had to choose, without hesitation, it would be "Bad Blood."
First of all, let's just talk about that music video. It's like an action movie on steroids, with Taylor leading her crew of headline ladies on a mission to take down a former friend turned enemy. The amount of sass and confidence that exudes from Taylor is just pure fire, and let's not forget the star-studded cast that includes Selena Gomez, Kendrick Lamar, and Zendaya. It's a who's who of Hollywood's coolest.
But let's get back to the song itself. "Bad Blood" is a powerhouse anthem that is equal parts angry and empowering. Taylor's lyrics about a former friend who betrayed her are so relatable, and you can practically feel the rage seething through your veins as you sing along. The beat is infectious, and the chorus is one of those earworms that will stay in your head for days on end.
What I love most about "Bad Blood," though, is how it encapsulates the overall theme of '1989' - the idea of shaking off the past and embracing a new, more confident version of yourself. It's a message that is so important for everyone, and Taylor does a masterful job of expressing it in both her lyrics and her overall persona during the era.
And can we talk about how the album as a whole is just an absolute bop from start to finish? From "Welcome to New York" to "Clean," each song is a perfectly crafted piece of pop perfection that showcases Taylor's evolution as an artist. It's a departure from her country roots, but it's a transition that she nailed.
In my opinion, '1989' is the greatest album Taylor Swift has ever created - and that's saying something, considering how many amazing albums she's released over the years. It's a testament to her ability to grow and evolve as an artist, while still staying true to her core values and message.
In conclusion, "Bad Blood" is not just my favorite song in '1989,' it's a masterpiece that perfectly captures the essence of the entire album. It's a testament to Taylor's talent and creativity, and a reminder of the power of female empowerment and solidarity. So, if you haven't already, go give it a listen - you won't regret it.
Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Starting college is one of the most exciting and nerve-wracking experiences of my life. As a college student, I had to adjust to a new environment, a new schedule, and a new set of academic expectations. While I was excited to start this new chapter of my life, the challenges of college life also affected me mentally. It was a difficult transition, but I found ways to maintain my mental wellness and adapt to my new surroundings.
One of the biggest challenges I faced when I started college was homesickness. I missed my family and friends back home and found it hard to adjust to a new environment without their support. This feeling of loneliness and isolation affected me mentally and made it hard for me to focus on my studies.
To combat this, I made an effort to make new friends and get involved in extracurricular activities. Joining clubs and organizations helped me meet people with similar interests and gave me a sense of belonging. I also made an effort to stay connected with my family and friends back home through video calls and messaging. These small actions helped me feel less alone and more connected to my support system.
Another challenge that affected me mentally was the academic pressure. The expectations of college were much higher than high school, and I found it hard to keep up with the workload. I often felt overwhelmed and stressed, which affected my mental health and well-being.
To manage the stress, I developed healthy coping mechanisms such as meditation and exercise. Taking a break from studying and doing activities that I enjoy, such as running or practicing yoga, helped me relax and clear my mind. It was important for me to prioritize self-care and mental wellness, even when I had a busy schedule.
In addition to coping mechanisms, I also found it helpful to seek out support from campus resources. My college offered counseling services, which I utilized when I felt overwhelmed or needed someone to talk to. Talking to a professional helped me gain perspective and feel more in control of my mental health.
Overall, mental health is incredibly important to me, and I make an effort to maintain my mental wellness every day. By staying connected to my support system, developing healthy coping mechanisms, and seeking out support when I need it, I can thrive in college despite the challenges.
In conclusion, starting college is an exciting but challenging time for many students. The new surroundings, academic pressure, and homesickness can all take a toll on mental health. However, it is possible to maintain mental wellness by prioritizing self-care and seeking out support. As a college student, I know that taking care of my mental health is crucial for my academic success and overall well-being. By staying committed to my mental wellness, I am confident that I can overcome any obstacle and thrive in college and beyond
Healthy Eating Scholarship
As a college student, I have come to understand the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits. At times, it may seem difficult to prioritize healthy eating, especially with the many demands that come with being a student. However, I have realized that the benefits of healthy eating far outweigh the temporary satisfaction of indulging in unhealthy foods.
Firstly, having healthy eating habits is essential for our physical health. A balanced and nutritious diet is crucial in maintaining a healthy weight, reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and providing us with the energy we need to tackle our daily activities. In college, we often face long hours of studying and attending classes, which can be exhausting both physically and mentally. Therefore, it is important to fuel our bodies with nutrient-rich foods that will sustain us throughout the day.
Moreover, healthy eating habits also have a positive impact on our mental health. Research has shown that certain foods can help improve our mood and cognitive function, while others can have the opposite effect. For instance, consuming foods high in refined sugars and unhealthy fats can cause mood swings and feelings of lethargy, while consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains, fruits and vegetables can enhance our mood and cognitive function.
I have noticed a significant difference in my physical and mental health since practicing healthy eating habits. In the past, I would often turn to processed and junk foods as a quick fix for my hunger pangs, but I realized that this was not sustainable. I found that I would experience a sugar crash shortly after consuming such foods, which left me feeling more tired and unproductive. As I started to incorporate more whole foods, fruits, and vegetables into my diet, I found that I had more energy throughout the day, and my concentration levels improved. Additionally, I found that my skin was clearer and that I had a better overall sense of well-being.
It is also important to note that healthy eating habits do not have to be restrictive or boring. There are many ways to incorporate nutrient-rich foods into our diets in creative and enjoyable ways. For instance, one can experiment with different fruits and vegetables to create colorful and tasty smoothies, add nuts and seeds to their salads, and replace refined carbohydrates with whole grains such as quinoa or brown rice.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that having healthy eating habits is essential for our physical and mental well-being. As a college student, it may seem difficult to prioritize healthy eating amidst the many demands of school. However, I have come to realize that practicing healthy eating habits is not only beneficial but also achievable. By making small changes to our diets and incorporating more whole foods, fruits, and vegetables, we can improve our physical and mental health and set ourselves up for a healthier future.

Of course, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not always easy, especially when faced with the challenges that come with being a college student. Balancing academics, extracurriculars, and social life can be a difficult task, and it’s important to acknowledge that it’s okay to ask for help when needed.
For me, seeking support from friends, family, and mental health professionals has been crucial in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Whether it’s venting to a friend about a difficult assignment or seeking professional help for mental health concerns, there is no shame in seeking support when needed.
In conclusion, college is an exciting time full of opportunities for growth and learning. However, it’s important to prioritize one’s health to make the most of these opportunities. By prioritizing self-care practices, physical activity, and spiritual pursuits, I can maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul amidst the challenges of college. Your Health Journey Scholarship
Growing up, I was never one to focus on my physical or mental well-being. I indulged in junk food and spent most of my days lounging around watching TV or playing video games. It wasn't until I entered college that I realized that my unhealthy habits were starting to take a toll on my body and mind.
One day, I decided enough was enough. I knew I needed to make a change in my life, so I began taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle. I started by incorporating more whole foods into my diet and cutting back on processed foods. It was hard to change this diet as I had to change my mindset toward food. But I also started working out regularly and engaging in activities that made me happy and relieved stress.
The physical changes I experienced were slow but sure - I eventually lost weight, gained muscle, and had more energy throughout the day. But the mental changes were even more profound. I began feeling more confident, less anxious, and more focused in my daily life. I found myself approaching challenges with a clearer mind and a more positive attitude.
Since then, I've committed to maintaining this healthier lifestyle for the rest of my life. It's not always easy, and there are certainly days when I fall back into old habits. But I've come to realize that living a healthy life isn't about perfection - it's about progress. It's about taking small steps each day toward a better version of myself.
One of the most important things I've learned on this journey is that self-care is not selfish. Taking care of myself physically and mentally has allowed me to show up as a better friend, partner, and community member. When I prioritize my well-being, I have more energy and resources to give to others.
But there are still moments when I struggle. Sometimes I'm tempted to reach for the bag of chips instead of the apple or skip my workout for an extra hour of sleep. In those moments, I remind myself of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and why I started this journey in the first place.
And it's not just about me - I hope to inspire others to take steps towards a healthier lifestyle as well. Whether it's through sharing my story, encouraging friends to join me in a yoga class, or simply leading by example, I believe that we can all play a role in building healthier communities.
As I continue on this journey, I'm excited to see where it takes me. I know that there will be ups and downs, but I'm confident in my ability to overcome challenges and stay committed to a healthier lifestyle. And who knows - maybe one day I'll be the one inspiring someone else to take their first steps towards a healthier life.
