Bio

Have you ever thought of life as a hand of cards—where no matter what you’re dealt, you have to play that hand? My name is Khron Payne, and I ask that question because that’s exactly how I view life. When I was in 8th grade, I asked my mother, “Why do we live this way?” She looked at me and said, “We were given this hand, and we must play it to the best of our abilities.” Ever since that day, I’ve been doing everything in my power to make something out of the hand I was given. With the mind set I had I wanted to make sure that I learned a lot from school and tried to get all A’s my 8th grade year. I did not know how hard it would be while being a Student Athlete because this was also the year I started to play organized basketball and found my passion in life. Playing basketball taught me to be determined and disciplined to always work as hard as I can. It taught me that I have to be different from people to be great and to be 30 minutes early to be in the gym at 5AM getting shots up. Basketball made me the young man I am today. As I got older I learned that my education is my key to success through my ability being able to learn I can do and be whatever I want in life coming into 9th grade I was told to think of high school as a bank and my grades is me investing my money by my athletic director the more I learned from school the more I could get in life. I make sure to learn anytime I can. It's my character, it's how I am in the position I am in today.

One of the most meaningful volunteer experiences I participated in was helping organize and support my school's National Honor Society food drive. As a member of the National Honor Society at Denby High School, I worked alongside other students to collect and distribute food for families in our community who were experiencing financial hardship. While collecting donations may seem like a simple task, I learned that every can of food and every contribution represented hope for someone in need. Being involved in this effort showed me that small acts of service, when people work together, can make a lasting impact. My role in the food drive involved encouraging others to donate, helping organize collected items, and ensuring that resources reached families in our local community. The experience reminded me that leadership is not about receiving recognition—it is about stepping forward to help others and encouraging those around you to do the same. Seeing the generosity of students, teachers, and community members inspired me to continue serving whenever I have the opportunity. In addition to serving through the National Honor Society, I have volunteered for several years with Trinity House Homeless Shelter, which serves teenagers and young adults. Supporting Trinity House has always meant more to me than simply donating supplies. Because I am close in age to many of the young people the shelter serves, I understand how important it is for them to feel supported and valued. My goal has always been to remind them that they are not forgotten and that there are people in the community who genuinely care about their future. These experiences have strengthened my compassion and taught me that kindness can have a lasting impact on someone's life. I have also had the opportunity to serve my school through Unified Basketball. As a member of the team, I coached, encouraged, and competed alongside students with disabilities. This experience taught me the importance of inclusion, patience, and encouragement. Watching my teammates build confidence and enjoy being part of the team reminded me that leadership is about helping others recognize their own strengths and creating opportunities where everyone feels welcome. My commitment to service also begins at home. As the oldest of four children, I spend approximately 10 to 15 hours each week helping my family. I wash dishes, clean, grocery shop, feed our dogs, and help care for my youngest sibling, who is still a toddler. Whether I am feeding her, changing her, or supervising her, I understand that leadership starts with being dependable. Supporting my family has taught me responsibility, sacrifice, and the importance of putting others before myself. These experiences have shaped my understanding of leadership through service. True leaders do not simply tell others what to do—they lead by example through compassion, humility, and consistent action. I will continue carrying these values with me as I pursue my education and future career, always looking for opportunities to serve my community and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Learner Math Lover Scholarship
My love for math began at a very young age. Some of my favorite memories are spending time with my father solving math problems and working with numbers together. Those experiences made math more than just a school subject—they made it something I genuinely enjoyed. As I grew older, I realized that math came naturally to me, and I appreciated the challenge of finding solutions through logic and critical thinking. What I enjoy most about math is that there is always a process to follow and a problem to solve. It teaches patience, accuracy, and perseverance. Even when a problem is difficult, there is a sense of accomplishment that comes from working through it and finding the correct answer. Math has helped me develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills that I know will benefit me throughout my life. My passion for math has also influenced my future career goals. In college, I plan to study business and finance with an emphasis in accounting because I enjoy working with numbers and understanding how they help people make informed financial decisions. My ultimate goal is to own my own accounting business, where I can use my skills to help individuals, families, and small businesses manage their finances, save for the future, and achieve financial stability. For me, math is about much more than calculations. It is a tool that can improve lives by helping people make smart financial choices and build a secure future. I hope to use the education I receive to give back to my community by providing trustworthy financial guidance and helping others become more financially knowledgeable. Math has shaped the way I think, solve problems, and plan for my future. It has given me confidence in my abilities and inspired me to pursue a career where I can combine my passion for numbers with my desire to serve others. I look forward to using that passion to make a meaningful difference in my community.

The impact I want to make begins with helping people build better futures for themselves. Throughout high school, I have learned that even small acts of service can create lasting change. Whether I am volunteering in my community, serving my school, or planning for my future career, my goal has always been to make a positive difference in the lives of others. I believe that education will give me the knowledge and opportunities to expand that impact and strengthen the community that has helped shape me. One of the experiences that has influenced me the most is volunteering with Trinity House Homeless Shelter. For several years, I have made it a priority to support teenagers and young adults who are experiencing homelessness or difficult circumstances. My involvement has never been just about donating supplies. It has been about helping people feel seen, respected, and valued during some of the most challenging times in their lives. Because I am close in age to many of the residents, I feel a personal connection to them and understand how important it is for young people to know that someone believes in their future. This experience has shown me that meaningful change begins with compassion and a willingness to serve. I have also worked to make a difference within my school community. As a member of the National Honor Society at Denby High School, I have participated in food drives that provide resources to families in need. Seeing our efforts directly benefit members of our community has reinforced my belief that service is a responsibility, not just an opportunity. I also participated in Unified Basketball, where I coached, encouraged, and played alongside students with disabilities. That experience taught me that leadership is about creating opportunities for others to feel included, respected, and confident. Watching my teammates grow and celebrate their accomplishments reminded me that everyone deserves the chance to succeed. These experiences have inspired my career goals. During college, I plan to study business and finance with an emphasis in accounting. Working with numbers has always come naturally to me, and I genuinely enjoy solving financial problems. My ultimate goal is to own my own accounting business that provides honest, reliable, and affordable financial services to individuals, families, and small businesses. I want to help people understand their finances, prepare for the future, and make informed decisions that improve their quality of life. Too often, people struggle financially because they lack access to trusted guidance. I hope to become someone they can rely on to build financial security and confidence. The people who inspire me most are those who quietly serve others without expecting recognition. Their example has taught me that lasting change comes through consistency, kindness, and integrity. I hope to carry those values with me throughout my education and career. My vision for the future is to create a stronger, more financially knowledgeable community where individuals and families have the resources and confidence to achieve their goals. Through education, service, and leadership, I want to empower others to build brighter futures for themselves. By investing in my education today, I will gain the skills to create opportunities for others tomorrow, leaving a lasting impact that extends far beyond my own success.

To me, selflessness means putting the needs of others before my own without expecting anything in return. It is shown through everyday actions, whether helping my family, supporting my classmates, or serving members of my community. I believe that true leadership is rooted in service, and throughout high school I have made it a priority to use my time and abilities to help others whenever I can. As the oldest of four children, I have naturally taken on a leadership role within my family. Every week, I spend approximately 10 to 15 hours helping with household responsibilities, including washing dishes, cleaning, grocery shopping, and feeding our dogs. One of my most important responsibilities is helping care for my youngest sibling, who is still a toddler. I feed her, change her, supervise her, and help wherever my parents need me. These responsibilities have taught me that selflessness often happens behind the scenes through consistent acts of service that help a family function. While balancing school, sports, and extracurricular activities can be challenging, I know that supporting my family is one of my greatest responsibilities. I also strive to be a positive role model for my younger siblings by demonstrating the importance of hard work, kindness, and responsibility. I have also looked for opportunities to serve my school community. As a member of the National Honor Society at Denby High School, I have participated in food drives that provide resources to families facing hardship. Knowing that our efforts help people in our own community motivates me to continue serving others. Another meaningful experience was participating on the Unified Basketball team, where I coached, encouraged, and played alongside students with disabilities. Through Unified Basketball, I learned that everyone deserves the opportunity to feel included, supported, and valued. Watching my teammates grow in confidence and enjoy the game reminded me that sometimes the greatest gift we can give someone is our encouragement and belief in their abilities. Beyond school, I have volunteered for several years with the Trinity House Homeless Shelter, which serves teenagers and young adults. Because I am close in age to many of the people the shelter helps, I feel a personal connection to its mission. Supporting Trinity House is about much more than donating supplies. It is about showing young people that they are not forgotten and that their lives matter. I hope my service helps provide not only practical resources but also hope during difficult times. These experiences have shaped my understanding of selflessness. Helping others has taught me compassion, humility, and gratitude. I have learned that making a difference does not always require grand gestures. Often, it is the willingness to consistently give your time, effort, and care that has the greatest impact. As I continue my education and pursue my goal of earning a degree in business and finance with an emphasis in accounting, I will carry these values with me. I hope to continue serving my community by helping individuals and families achieve financial stability and build brighter futures. Selflessness is not simply something I do—it is a principle that guides how I live, lead, and strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Choosing a career in accounting is a decision that reflects both my strengths and my long-term goals. From an early age, I discovered that working with numbers came naturally to me. I enjoy solving problems, organizing information, and finding solutions that make sense. As I learned more about business and finance, I realized that accounting would allow me to combine these interests with a career that makes a meaningful difference in people's lives. In college, I plan to study business and finance with an emphasis in accounting. I believe this field will provide me with the knowledge and skills needed to build a successful career while also creating opportunities to serve others. Accounting is more than preparing taxes or balancing financial statements. It helps individuals, families, and businesses make informed financial decisions, prepare for the future, and achieve their goals. I want to be someone who people can trust to guide them through important financial decisions. My ultimate goal is to own my own accounting business. Becoming a business owner represents independence, leadership, and the opportunity to create a lasting impact in my community. I want to build a firm that provides honest, reliable, and affordable financial services to individuals and small businesses. Many people struggle with budgeting, taxes, and financial planning because they lack access to trustworthy guidance. I hope to change that by helping clients understand their finances, save for the future, and make informed decisions that improve their financial well-being. Earning a degree in accounting will have a life-changing impact on my future. It will give me the education, professional skills, and credibility needed to achieve my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. A college degree will also open doors to internships, networking opportunities, and professional certifications that will strengthen my knowledge and prepare me for the challenges of owning a business. Beyond career opportunities, my education will allow me to build financial stability for myself and my family while setting an example for my younger siblings that hard work and education create opportunities. Most importantly, I want my success to benefit others. I hope to give back to my community by helping people gain confidence in managing their finances and planning for their futures. Financial knowledge can change lives, and I want to use my education to empower others to achieve their own goals. By earning a degree in accounting and eventually opening my own accounting business, I will be able to combine my passion for numbers with my commitment to serving my community. This career path is more than a profession—it is an opportunity to build a successful future while making a positive and lasting difference in the lives of others.

Growing up, I have learned that success is not determined by where you start but by the effort you put into creating a better future. As the oldest of four children, I have taken on responsibilities that have taught me discipline, leadership, and resilience. While balancing school, athletics, and extracurricular activities, I also help care for my family by cleaning, grocery shopping, feeding our dogs, and caring for my youngest sibling, who is still a toddler. Whether I am feeding her, changing her, or watching over her, I understand that my family depends on me, and I take that responsibility seriously. Despite the challenges that come with balancing family responsibilities and preparing for my future, I have remained committed to academic excellence and serving my community. As a member of the National Honor Society at Denby High School, I have participated in food drives to help families in our local community. I also joined the Unified Basketball team, where I had the opportunity to coach, encourage, and compete alongside students with disabilities. These experiences taught me that leadership is about lifting others up and making a positive difference. Leadership has been a major part of my high school journey. I have served as captain of the varsity basketball team at both Pershing and Denby High School and as captain in JROTC, where I developed teamwork, accountability, and confidence. I also participated in L!FE Leaders, a Detroit youth leadership and career development program that strengthened my communication skills and prepared me to become an active leader in my community. My hard work has been recognized through several honors, including the National JROTC Award for the highest GPA, earning the rank of Captain, the Cross Country Newcomer Award after helping my team win a district championship, culinary recognition through the C2 Pipeline mentoring program, and being selected as a basketball team captain. These achievements reflect the determination I have maintained despite the responsibilities I carry outside of school. Receiving this grant would ease the financial burden of pursuing higher education and allow me to focus on achieving my academic and career goals. More importantly, it would be an investment in someone who has consistently demonstrated perseverance, leadership, and a commitment to serving others. I am determined to use my education to build a successful future for myself while continuing to give back to my family and community. I believe motivated students from disadvantaged backgrounds deserve opportunities because talent and determination should never be limited by financial circumstances. With the support of this scholarship, I will continue working hard to reach my goals and create opportunities not only for myself but also for those who look up to me.

Growing up, I have learned that financial knowledge can change the direction of a person's life. That understanding has inspired my goal of studying business and finance with an emphasis in accounting. After college, I plan to open my own accounting firm, where I can help individuals, families, and small businesses build financial security. I believe that access to trustworthy financial guidance should not be a privilege available only to those with wealth. By using my career to educate and support others, I hope to strengthen my community and create opportunities for long-term success. One disparity I want to reduce is the lack of financial literacy and access to financial planning in Black and underserved communities. Many families work hard but have limited access to resources that teach budgeting, tax planning, saving, investing, and wealth-building strategies. Research consistently shows that financial education, combined with access to professional guidance, increases savings, improves credit, and helps families build generational wealth. History also demonstrates that communities thrive when local businesses and entrepreneurs have access to financial knowledge and resources that allow them to grow and reinvest in their neighborhoods. As an accountant and future business owner, I plan to provide affordable accounting and tax services while also offering free financial literacy workshops for students, young adults, and first-time entrepreneurs. These workshops would cover topics such as creating a budget, understanding credit, filing taxes, managing debt, starting a business, and planning for retirement. I also hope to partner with local schools, churches, and community organizations to make these resources accessible to those who need them most. By educating people before financial problems arise, I can help them make informed decisions that lead to lasting financial stability. The success of this initiative could be measured in several ways. I would track the number of individuals who participate in workshops, the number of new small businesses served, and client surveys measuring improvements in financial confidence and knowledge. Over time, I would also look at measurable outcomes such as increased savings, improved credit scores, successful tax filings, and business growth among clients who use my services. These results would demonstrate whether my work is creating meaningful and lasting change. My commitment to serving my community has already begun. For several years, I have supported Trinity House Homeless Shelter, which provides housing and support for teenagers and young adults. Because I am close in age to many of the residents, I feel a personal connection to their experiences. Volunteering and donating supplies has taught me that serving others is about more than meeting immediate needs—it is about reminding people that they are valued and that someone believes in their future. Those experiences have strengthened my desire to pursue a career where I can continue helping others build stable and successful lives. My vision reflects the principle of Investing in the Black because it focuses on directing knowledge, resources, and professional services toward sustainable economic growth. By helping individuals improve their financial literacy, supporting entrepreneurs, and encouraging wealth creation, I hope to create opportunities that extend beyond one generation. I believe that when people have the tools to manage their finances and build successful businesses, they invest back into their families and communities, creating a cycle of prosperity that benefits everyone. Through my career as an accountant and business owner, I want to make a positive impact by empowering others to achieve financial independence and long-term success.

I tightened and expanded it to land closer to a full 500-word scholarship essay while keeping your voice and message. Have you ever thought of life as a hand of cards—where, no matter what you’re dealt, you must play that hand to the best of your ability? That’s exactly how I’ve come to view my life. When I was in 8th grade, I asked my mother a question: “Why do we live this way?” Her answer was simple but powerful: “We were given a hand, and we must play it to the best of our abilities.” At the time, I did not fully understand what she meant, but over the years, her words became the foundation for how I approach challenges, opportunities, and the goals I set for myself. From that moment on, I made a commitment that I would do everything in my power to make something meaningful out of the life I was given. I set a goal to earn all A’s during my 8th-grade year because I viewed education as my opportunity to create a better future. What I did not expect was how difficult that commitment would become while beginning my journey as a student-athlete. That same year, I started playing organized basketball and discovered more than a sport—I found a passion and a mindset that continue to shape me. Basketball has taught me lessons that extend far beyond the court. It has instilled discipline, perseverance, accountability, and self-motivation. I learned that success often requires doing what others are unwilling to do, whether that means waking up at 5 AM to train, practicing consistently, or continuing to work even when progress feels slow. Basketball showed me that greatness is built through effort and consistency rather than talent alone. It also taught me how to lead by example, remain focused under pressure, and continue pushing forward when obstacles appear. As I transitioned into high school, my understanding of education evolved. My athletic director gave me advice that changed my perspective: “Think of high school as a bank. Your grades are your investments.” That statement stayed with me because it connected effort today with opportunity tomorrow. I realized that every assignment, every class, and every challenge was an investment in my future. The more knowledge I gained, the more possibilities I created for myself. Being a first-generation college student is important to me because earning a degree means more than personal achievement. It represents creating opportunities that previous generations of my family were unable to experience. College is not simply my next step—it is a chance to change the direction of my family’s future. I want to show that circumstances do not determine outcomes and that determination can create opportunities. Today, I continue to challenge myself both academically and athletically because I understand that growth requires effort. My values—faith, perseverance, humility, and hard work—guide every decision I make. I am grateful to my mother for teaching me resilience, to my coaches and teachers.
