My relationship with Buddhism has always been personal and meaningful. Growing up in a Buddhist family, I was taught to see life through the values of compassion, patience, mindfulness, and understanding. These teachings shaped how I process my emotions, how I treat others, and how I approach challenges. As I’ve gotten older and faced more responsibilities, especially as a college student striving toward a better future, my connection to Buddhism has deepened and guided me in powerful ways.
Buddhism teaches that suffering is a natural part of life, but that it can be lessened through wisdom, compassion, and mindful living. I’ve faced many struggles, especially financially. My family comes from a low-income background, and there have been many times when we had to make difficult sacrifices just to get by. I’m the first in my family to attend college in the U.S., and while I’m incredibly proud of that, it also comes with a lot of pressure. There are moments I feel overwhelmed, wondering how I’ll be able to afford books, tuition, or even basic living expenses. But my Buddhist faith has taught me to stay present, to take things step by step, and to believe in the power of effort and intention.
I am currently studying Health Science at BMCC, with the long-term goal of becoming a radiology nurse. I chose this path because I want to help people heal, not just physically, but emotionally. So many people in healthcare feel unseen or misunderstood. I want to be the kind of nurse who listens, who cares, and who brings peace to patients in vulnerable moments. Buddhism has taught me to treat all beings with compassion, and I believe this will make me a more thoughtful and dedicated nurse. It’s not just about performing tasks; it’s about making people feel safe and respected.
After graduation, I hope to give back in several ways. First, I want to work in communities like the one I come from low-income, immigrant, and often overlooked. I know what it feels like to be afraid of not affording care or not understanding medical terms. I want to be a bridge for people in those situations, offering comfort and support. Second, I plan to volunteer within Buddhist and immigrant communities, sharing what I’ve learned and encouraging other young people who are struggling to stay in school and follow their dreams, even when it feels impossible.
Buddhism is not just a religion for me; it’s a way of living with purpose, kindness, and courage. It’s helped me stay grounded through hard times and inspired me to keep going when things felt too heavy. With the help of a scholarship, I can continue walking this path, not just for myself, but for everyone I hope to serve in the future.
