Bio

I spent 24 years in the corporate world, during which I also trained and worked as an esthetician. Eventually I made the decision to retrain as a massage therapist too, which led me to open NuVel Esthetiques, a day spa I built and run out of my own home in Canarsie, Brooklyn. At the beginning of 2026, I made another decision to go back to school as an adult studen, the first in my family to pursue a college degree and to become a registered nurse. I'm completing my nursing prerequisites at Medgar Evers College, a CUNY school serving Central Brooklyn's underserved community, while still running my business and raising my family. Balancing motherhood, a full course load, and a spa hasn't been easy, but I've kept a 3.76 GPA through it. I'm currently preparing for the NLN NEX nursing entrance exam, the last step before I can formally enter the nursing program. I'm also a published author, my book, "Lotus in Bloom: From Trauma to Tranquility," came out last year in 2025. I'm not doing this only for myself. I want to bring nursing care back into a community, and to show my own kids, and other women starting over later in life that it's never too late to build something new. Long-term, I want to bring these pieces together into a community wellness center in my neighborhood. Combining nursing care with the holistic services I already offer through my spa, so people here have access to both medical and wellness support in one place, close to home.

Bick New York Scholarship
For nearly 24 years, I worked in corporate America. As a mother, stability was essential. While there was no opportunity for climbing the ladder, the paycheck was good, the benefits were excellent, and I convinced myself that what I had was more than enough. It wasn't until COVID slowed the world down that I finally had the chance to stop and literally smell the roses on one of my daily park walks. In that quiet moment, I realized I wanted a purpose. By the time I was ready to leave corporate for massage school, I had already obtained my esthetics license. In massage school is where the shift truly took place. During my clinical rotation, one client changed the way I viewed healthcare. He came to see me every two weeks and spoke very little during our first few sessions. When he finally opened up, he shared that he had lived with chronic back pain for years and had accepted it as part of his life. He told me that after my second massage, the pain was gone. He waited weeks before saying anything because he expected it to return. It never did. His gratitude was very full filling to me knowing that he felt better in his body. Since then, I've become a firm believer that when the mind and body are calm, people look better, feel better, and live better. Helping people experience that, even if it's only for an hour, has become my purpose. Returning to college as a first-generation student while running my own business has not been easy. Balancing school, work, and motherhood requires discipline, sacrifice, and faith. Every challenge reminds me why I started: I want to become a registered nurse so I can combine compassionate nursing care with the calming, whole-person approach that has shaped my career. Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of tuition and books, allowing me to focus on my education and continue serving others. I believe it's never too late to follow your purpose, and I hope my journey inspires others to believe the same.
