Even though I was raised in a two-parent home, my family struggled with many hardships that are often seen in low-income households. I grew up in Houston, Texas, witnessing my parents' hardworking endeavors to provide my siblings and me opportunities that seemed limited at times due to financial circumstances. My parents exemplified diligence, discipline, and how to make the most out of available resources. My low-income upbringing drove me to strive academically to earn future opportunities for success. I successfully obtained my associate degree and earned more than sixty college credit hours prior to graduating high school, and later I transitioned to Prairie View A&M University. It has become clear to me that financial barriers should not dictate a person's trajectory as long as they remain persistent and disciplined. My diligence was tested throughout my first year of college as I navigated a grieving period during Spring 2026 with the passing of my great aunt, who was my guardian at an early age. This challenging experience has provided me the wisdom and fortitude to be more resilient, to demonstrate responsibility, and to assist others, even when personally experiencing difficulty. As a Construction Science major, I envision building a career through constructing positive impact in communities with responsible and resilient development projects. Additionally, I plan to invest my time mentoring youth whose socioeconomic status is comparable to my upbringing, proving that such factors cannot restrict their potential. I diligently pursue my education, professional responsibilities, engagement in my community, and my personal growth through ongoing development and learning. These experiences and my upbringing have instilled in me that hard work, diligence, and persistence can pave paths for my success as well as opportunities for those with similar circumstances to mine.

I am drawn to pursuing a career in STEM because I’m passionate about creating solutions that enhance the lives of people in the community and the communities as a whole. As a Construction Science major at Prairie View A&M University, I appreciate the integration of technical skills, problem solving, creativity and leadership found within STEM education. The field of construction involves more than constructing structures-it’s also about creating communities, building places where individuals can live, work, learn and develop. It’s important to me that the work I do makes a lasting difference in the lives of people in the community. I’ve always been interested in construction through the realm of design and its influence, including planning and execution of a blueprint, and watching a design turn into reality. I admire how design shapes people’s interaction with their surroundings. STEM careers are about challenging minds and developing practical solutions for challenging situations, and I’m inspired to find efficient, effective, and innovative solutions. With a degree in Construction Science, I’ll learn and apply the technical and leadership skills to manage a construction project for the betterment of the community and the people in it. I’m convinced STEM careers will help us combat some of the problems in society today. Everything from affordable housing to accessible infrastructure to schools to common areas hinges on STEM professionals with the dedication to utilize their knowledge for good. When I transition into a STEM-centered career, I want to build schools, housing developments, parks, community centers and more which will have a lifelong impact on residents of the community. In the near future, I’d like to hold a position in the leadership team of a major construction company as superintendent. Ultimately, I would like to leverage my career and my Construction Science degree for my own community in two major ways: first, to mentor the younger generation who may be unaware of the endless opportunities in the field of STEM. As a Black student attending an HBCU, it is a duty of mine to act as representation for and inform the younger generation on opportunities like those in construction and engineering. I believe many of the bright young minds in the community have the potential for a great career in STEM, but they’ve just been unaware and unafraid. I also aspire to engage in workforce development and advocate for youth to receive trade-skills and higher education in Construction and other STEM fields. Thriving communities, the development of which I wish to participate, are built not just from structures, but from investing in people, and creating opportunities for future generations, whether in STEM, trades or other industries. STEM is the path to provide myself, and hopefully many others from the community, opportunities to flourish.

Student loan debt is a significant financial burden that can last well beyond college graduation, so as a college student, I know I must be proactive about reducing my overall debt amount during my academic career. While some financial borrowing is likely necessary to fund my degree, I am determined to find every available option to lessen the load of this future financial commitment. One of the most important avenues through which I will address both my current and future student loan burden is through scholarships. I view these financial aids not simply as resources, but rather as an essential means to ease the financial strain many students face and, consequently, to focus more heavily on academic achievement. I am consistently searching for opportunities to earn scholarships and actively invest time in application processes because I recognize that every dollar obtained from scholarships translates into a dollar that does not require borrowing. Another strategy to alleviate my financial obligation is through continuing employment throughout my undergraduate studies. As a practicing barber, I have developed a skill that allows me to generate income, even as a full-time student. My work experience has ingrained in me the importance of financial discipline, effective time management, and responsible financial decision-making. A portion of the earnings from my work, while largely allocated to everyday living expenses and current educational needs, will be directed toward mitigating the amount I might need to borrow or, if feasible, to make even modest payments towards educational expenses. I also plan to actively pursue employment opportunities during summer breaks to maximize my income potential and to proactively reduce the amount of debt I may carry after graduating. Even if my summer earnings only have a modest impact on my total educational expenses, I am convinced that consistent, deliberate efforts can make a significant difference in diminishing future student loan amounts and the associated interest that accrues. In addition to seeking out scholarships and working, I make it a priority to be financially responsible by creating and adhering to a budget and avoiding frivolous spending. I believe that managing and mitigating future debt begins with making informed and conservative financial choices in the present. My financial behavior throughout college is a conscious effort to invest in a stable financial future, both during and after graduation. My career aspirations, upon graduation with a degree in Construction Science, lie within the construction industry, with a progression toward superintendent and leadership roles. This field presents a promising avenue for career advancement and financial security that will empower me to responsibly manage any remaining student loan obligations. Although the prospect of student loan debt may seem overwhelming, I am fully committed to tackling it head-on through hard work, scholarships, continued employment, and diligent financial management. These deliberate actions taken today represent an investment in my education and the foundation of a successful and financially secure future.
Michael Rudometkin Memorial Scholarship
For me, selflessness is the choice to put another person’s needs before your own, even when doing so comes at a personal cost. It means acknowledging the pain and struggle someone else is going through and willingly contributing your time, energy, or resources to help, even when you yourself are facing hardships. An instance that most strongly demonstrates selflessness for me took place in my first year of college when I helped to support my sixteen-year-old cousin who was dealing with abuse and neglect from his mother in Las Vegas. I was in my first semester at Prairie View A&M University, juggling classes, work, and the grief from the recent passing of my great aunt, a significant figure in my life and up-bringing. Amidst these circumstances, I found out about the situation my cousin was in. He was facing abuse by his mother on multiple occasions. He felt lost, unheard, and trapped within a damaging home environment. Although I was a hundred miles away in Texas and could not be there physically, I refused to stand idly by. Instead, I became one of the constant voices of support in his life. I dedicated numerous hours to communicating with him, listening, encouraging, and offering guidance throughout a challenging period that no young person should endure. I made myself accessible at all hours of the day or night, weaving in conversations between lectures, study time, and work shifts. Often, the greatest contribution someone can offer is merely their unwavering presence. I also worked additional hours cutting hair to generate funds that I could send him to assist him financially as he encountered needs. As a college student fully employed and managing studies and personal life, my budget was limited, and every dollar was accounted for. However, I recognized that my cousin’s immediate welfare was paramount, more so than several of my personal desires. My desire to help was not motivated by seeking recognition or accolades but by a sincere drive to let him know that he was not alone. This experience taught me that selflessness is not always characterized by significant grand gestures; rather, it can be the consistent act of being present for someone during their most vulnerable moments. It entails placing the welfare of another alongside your own, regardless of how personal obstacles may seem to tower over the potential of your own contributions. This experience also ignited my compassion and sense of responsibility. I discovered that so many individuals were quietly fighting battles that remained invisible to others and that a simple act of kindness could have an immeasurable positive effect. My cousin’s experience served as a potent reminder that we each possess the capacity to make a difference in the lives of others, no matter the physical or logistical distance. Outside of my immediate family, I continue to reflect and embody selflessness in my daily life through community service, involvement in my church, active participation in student organizations, and by offering support to others as needed. Ultimately, I believe that true success is measured not only by personal achievements but by how effectively we utilize our blessings, talents, and resources for the benefit of those around us. Supporting my cousin during what was undoubtedly one of the most difficult times of his life cemented within me the guiding principle that I have always cherished: if someone needs help, do everything you possibly can to provide it. This commitment to service will continue to influence my actions and guide my decisions throughout my education, my career, and my life.
Clark Emerging Leaders Scholarship
One of the biggest trials I have faced occurred in the Spring 2026 semester of my freshman year at Prairie View A&M University. What should have been a primarily academic semester was actually one of the most trying periods in my life. In that same semester, I was mourning the loss of my great aunt, a matriarch in my life who played a significant role in raising me and molding me into the individual I am today. In tandem, I was helping support and protect my younger cousin from a situation of abuse and instability in his home while also working to earn income and fulfill my academic obligations as a college student. Losing my great aunt was a crushing emotional blow; she was a staunch supporter of my education and a source of encouragement who constantly pushed me to do my best. While processing her passing, I had to take on additional responsibilities for my cousin. I dedicated hours to ensuring his well-being, offering him emotional support, and taking on extra work hours cutting hair so I could financially assist him. The challenge of balancing these responsibilities with a demanding college workload became a considerable obstacle, and there were days I questioned my ability to survive the semester. Despite the immense difficulty, I remained steadfast in my commitment to family and my education. Through my faith, unwavering determination, and the support system around me, I discovered the meaning of perseverance without compromising my objectives. This experience proved that adversity reveals a person's true character, not their limitations. I learned the importance of resilience, sacrifice, effective time management, and the duty to stand by and support the people you care about when times are tough. My decision to attend a Historically Black College and University was motivated by a yearning to be in an environment where my peers reflected my own identity, understood my experiences, and shared the cultural values that have shaped me. As I grew up, I desired a learning environment that not only included me but celebrated me. Prairie View A&M University provides this exact atmosphere. It is a place that not only celebrates but fosters Black excellence, honors the past, and encourages each student to reach their maximum potential. My experience as an HBCU student has opened doors to invaluable connections with mentors, peers, and leaders who inspire me to pursue my aspirations with confidence. It has solidified my sense of self and shown me the power of a community that uplift each other. Being surrounded by ambitious, like-minded students has amplified my motivation to work harder and think bigger about my future. As a Construction Science major, my goal is to excel in the construction industry and become a leader and superintendent. I am confident that the education I will receive at an HBCU, coupled with its focus on leadership, professional networking, and community support, will be instrumental in my success. The lessons I learned navigating hardships during that freshman semester and the opportunities presented at Prairie View A&M University will undoubtedly equip me to face any challenges that lie ahead.
Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
Mental health is personal for me because it influences every part of a person’s experience as a student-academically, in our relationships, our physical well-being, etc. We can all relate to the struggles of being a college student with the responsibilities of our classes, family, finances, and various other personal issues life throws our way. If we don’t have strong mental health practices, it can all be a bit too much to handle. I am particularly invested in mental health because I battle ADHD, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. I know what it feels like when it is difficult to focus on what is being taught in class, handle stressful situations, maintain a sense of motivation, or even just be able to get a decent night’s rest. This has given me first-hand knowledge that sometimes you can’t see struggles people face, because people often hide what they are dealing with. It has taught me in many ways we need to make an effort to help one another be more self-aware and make it more acceptable to seek help for the issues that affect us as individuals. As a Black man, I have been exposed to a community that often encourages men not to be vulnerable or express themselves emotionally, but to remain “strong” and handle everything independently. There has been a message that in order to be strong as a Black man, you must not express your emotions or ask for help, which leads many to not seek support for issues with their mental health. I stand for men taking care of their mental health because I have seen how this can damage Black men’s physical, emotional, and social well-being, which often is left unaddressed and ignored. I advocate for the men in my community to prioritize their mental health and not be afraid to seek help and ask for support. The way that I actively contribute to Mental Health Awareness as it relates to my community is by openly talking with my peers about issues of mental health, and creating a safe space for people to openly express their stress, fears, and challenges. I make an effort to check-in on my male friends more regularly and ask open ended questions that allow them to speak on more than just their day. It often reminds them that they are not alone in whatever issues they might be facing and that I am willing to listen. I also often encourage my male peers to seek mental health services and to be able to talk to their friends about their issues as well as professional counselor’s when they find that they need support in this area. I want people to understand that going to see mental health professionals should not be viewed as something taboo or of a lack of strength but rather as a form of strengthening and maintaining one’s well being; just like seeing a doctor about any health problems. I constantly let people know that there should be no shame or embarrassment in seeking assistance to help one better their health and wellness. The environment within my university and community, where I am often the only Black man at social and other engagements, has presented opportunities to influence my male peers by example. I believe that by addressing mental health awareness issues in the communities to which we belong we have the power to instill change that supports the well-being of those around us, particularly the men in our communities. Mental health, for all of the reasons listed above and more, is a priority that I will continually uphold.
Champions Of A New Path Scholarship
While I am confident that my grades, leadership, and aspirations are commendable to scholarship committees, the one trait that truly sets me apart is not the perfection of a specific accomplishment. Rather, it is the ability to persevere, to adapt, and to continue my path towards excellence when presented with overwhelming circumstances that might have easily halted my educational progress. I believe I do not deserve this scholarship because I have not experienced a path less traveled than anyone else; rather, I believe I deserve this scholarship because I consistently have chosen growth, responsibility, and service in situations where it was challenging to do so. I am working towards a degree in Construction Science to ultimately pursue a career as a superintendent and future leader in the construction industry. My long-term aspirations consist of the supervision of projects that promote community well-being, in addition to the creation of opportunities for the next generation of construction professionals. Construction encompasses not simply building structures, but constructing spaces in which people live, work, play, learn, and evolve; this purpose motivates my dedication in the classroom, and drives me to seek opportunities that can help make me a learned and capable professional. One of my many strengths includes the initiative to not only be a good student but an effective entrepreneur and an up-and-coming professional. I have never been one to wait for an opportunity to come my way; rather, I strive to create one. As a barber, I learned important entrepreneurial lessons as I cultivated a clientele, managed appointments, and delivered superior customer service. This line of work not only taught me professionalism, responsibility, and communication skills, but I acquired knowledge that is often postponed until one is established in their respective career fields. The challenges and triumphs associated with running my own business taught me the importance of hard work and accountability because my own actions directly determined the success or failure of the enterprise. Furthermore, my leadership experience sets me apart from many of my peers. I do not equate leadership with holding a leadership position but with serving the community and empowering those around me to succeed. Throughout my high school career and up to this point, I have engaged in a multitude of school and community initiatives aimed at the betterment of others. Whether I was involved in a school organization, community service projects, or extracurricular campus activities, I have constantly been involved in situations where I can be an asset to others. I have established a strong reputation of being someone that can be trusted and relied upon by my community. While I am proud of my academic achievements, including earning college credits in high school and working towards my university degree, what truly distinguishes me from my competitors is my ability to not let personal circumstances prevent me from striving for success. College, although a positive chapter, has been an arduous journey for me personally due to the death of my Great-Aunt who was very influential in my life. Simultaneously, I became responsible for family obligations and I dedicated several hours per week helping to take care of my younger cousin. The combination of these family responsibilities along with my college workload has created moments where the easiest path would have been to lower my expectations of myself, or to cease my pursuit of a higher education altogether. However, in times of distress, I learned how to develop personal resilience. Resilience is not defined by a person's ability to not encounter obstacles in life, but by their ability to react to and overcome any obstacle thrown their way. Despite my personal challenges, I managed to stay afloat and continue to pursue my academic and life goals. My personal experiences strengthened my character, and the perseverance that I developed is a trait that can't be found in any textbook. Another key strength that sets me apart is my deep commitment to serving my community. Through my participation and volunteer work within various organizations at church, within my university, and community service focused on serving other students and members of the community. I have learned the value of service and know that the true success lies not in how much you gain individually, but rather in how you can contribute and impact others in a positive way. The desire to be more than a career-oriented professional, but rather an individual who leads and empowers others in the communities I serve is one that I take very seriously. The reason why I believe I have a genuine advantage over other applicants is because my success and efforts, while certainly a result of dedication and hard work, have not been without hardship and personal adversity. I refuse to make excuses; however, I have learned from my challenges and I use those experiences as steppingstones toward further success. My ability to perseveres, my eagerness to lead and learn, and my dedication to serve would be further amplified and focused as a recipient of this scholarship. I have proven to myself and to others that when the going gets tough, I do not quit, I just get going, even when it is an upward climb. I am confident in my ability to continue the trend of giving back to my community while advancing towards my academic and career aspirations, which I feel are very unique and can significantly contribute to my respective industry.
RonranGlee Literary Scholarship
Book- "Stocism: A Comprehensive Guide to Stocism and Stoic Philosophy" - John Ferguson Selected Paragraph: “Events themselves do not disturb people, but rather the judgments they form about those events. Therefore, if we remove our judgments or train them to align with reason, we gain freedom from unnecessary distress and gain control over our inner state regardless of external circumstances.” Essay: The essential message within this quote is that life’s suffering does not stem from circumstances, but rather from how we interpret them and the meaning that we derive from life circumstances. This is the writer’s core idea: we find freedom from pain not by mastering outside circumstances, but by taking control of our internal perception of those circumstances, in turn accepting responsibility for our own emotional reality. In other words, the reason behind your hurt is not what is going on outside you, but what is happening within. Firstly, one significant consequence is the neutrality of external events. Circumstances such as failure, criticism, loss of a loved one, and unexpected setbacks are all things that we cannot go through without some emotional impact. In essence, two people can experience exactly the same event, but due to their own perception of the circumstance, they will respond to the situation differently based on the thinking that has occurred within each individual. We could interpret distress not as something that must simply be accepted as part of life’s situation, but rather as something we create within ourselves. Thus, the writer is challenging our fundamental belief about what directly causes the pain we experience. Here, it is suggested that life does not necessarily cause us to feel sad, depressed, hurt, or worried, but rather that we have the ability to generate these emotions ourselves as we judge events according to our perception. The implication here is the necessity to examine the thoughts that occur spontaneously during life circumstances and gain control over these automatic thought patterns. A second point is that it requires training of our judgment. The passage does not suggest that we should exist in a state of complete lack of thought or be entirely non-emotional. What it implies is that the thinking process must be trained and guided by reason. There must be some mental discipline or exercise that one can follow in order to pause, review our perception, and choose how to be affected by it. This essentially means being in control of one’s thoughts and not allowing emotions to fully dictate reactions. It requires continuous mental training so that we respond more responsibly over time. A third consequence is that perception is a skill that requires time to develop. Just as physical strength is built through consistent exposure to resistance and challenge, Stoic philosophy teaches that a strong and stable mind is formed through habitual examination of one’s judgments about events. Over time, the mind becomes more stable and less influenced by impulsive thoughts. Instead, this disciplined state allows for clearer thinking and emotional steadiness. In this way, it becomes a form of self-training and mental discipline. A fourth important implication deals with the concept of control and freedom. True freedom, as described by the Stoic philosopher, is not the ability to control external circumstances; it is the ability to remain unaffected by them internally. It does not matter whether one succeeds, fails, receives criticism, or receives praise—the way the mind interprets these events determines the state of mind one experiences. The personal responsibility of maintaining control over our thoughts, even when external factors are beyond our control, is what determines inner peace. Lastly, this teaching shows how inner peace can be achieved in the long term through the training of thought processes. Emotional stability is not something that is innate, but something that can be learned and developed through continuous practice. One can reduce unnecessary suffering by separating the event itself from their reaction and interpretation of that event. It can therefore be seen that external life is always unpredictable and beyond our control, but our reaction to it remains within our control.
Second Chance Youth Scholarship
Winner
I see a second chance as being given the opportunity to define myself based on who I am becoming, not by the mistakes of the past. A second chance is the opportunity to learn from my experiences, improve my life, and live out my goals and potential rather than be defined by a single moment in time. In January of my eighth-grade year, I entered the juvenile justice system after being charged with assault with a weapon and was held at a juvenile detention facility until May of that year. Even though my stay was brief, the experience will stay with me forever. At that age, I had no idea that a choice I made could so drastically impact my future. Being removed from my normal environment, separated from family and friends, and forced to accept responsibility for my actions was one of the most profound experiences of my young life. That mistake became a turning point. It gave me the opportunity to step back, evaluate my choices, and decide where I wanted my life to go. Rather than allowing that mistake to define me, I committed myself to growth and accountability. The juvenile justice system taught me one of the most important lessons I have ever learned: actions have consequences, but they also have the power to create change. When I returned to school, I dedicated myself to academics, leadership, and self-improvement because I refused to let that mistake define my future. Through hard work, commitment, and discipline, I graduated high school in the top 5% of my class while simultaneously earning my Associate Degree. What could have been a setback became the motivation I needed to reach my full potential. I also became heavily involved in leadership and service. As a member of the National Honor Society, I served as Vice President, helping organize events, raise funds, and support service initiatives. Through Peer Assistance Leadership Services (PALS), I served as a mentor to younger students, encouraging them to work through challenges and make positive decisions. These experiences taught me that leadership is not about titles but about serving others and helping them recognize their own potential. I have also remained committed to community service through my church and volunteer work with the Houston Food Bank. Today, I am a Construction Science student at Prairie View A&M University and a participant in the Honors College. My goal is to become a superintendent or project manager in the construction industry and use my career to positively impact communities. The lessons I learned through the juvenile justice system—accountability, responsibility, discipline, and perseverance—continue to guide me every day. If awarded this scholarship, I would use the funds to help cover tuition, textbooks, fees, and other educational expenses. Reducing the financial burden of college would allow me to focus more fully on my education and personal development. The most important lesson I have learned is that one mistake should not define the rest of a person’s life. Many young people involved in the juvenile justice system believe their future is already decided. I once felt that way myself. Today, I hope to serve as proof that growth is possible and that setbacks can become opportunities for success. Through mentorship, service, and sharing my story, I hope to encourage other young people to take responsibility, pursue their goals, and believe in their ability to create a better future. For me, a second chance is more than an opportunity to start over—it is an opportunity to succeed. I hope to continue using mine to build a better future for myself while helping others do the same.
Christian Fitness Association General Scholarship
I am seeking this scholarship because I have consistently focused on academics, leadership, mentorship, and community service throughout my educational career. During my high school journey, I challenged myself to acquire an education and to positively contribute to the lives of those around me. Whether through holding a leadership position, participating in a mentorship program, volunteering within my community, or receiving outstanding grades, I have always been committed to using my experiences to benefit my community and to preparing myself to become a better leader in the future. Receiving both my High School Diploma and my Associate Degree within the same graduation year is among the greatest academic achievements I have attained. To achieve both goals I endured countless hours of time management, discipline, hard work, and perseverance. I learned how to balance my high school coursework, my college courses, extracurricular activities, and responsibilities within my home, while maintaining a clear vision of the goals I wanted to accomplish. Receiving an associate degree prior to my high school graduation provided me with a substantial academic foundation that will serve me as I begin my college career. Currently I am a construction science student in the Honors College at Prairie View A&M University. My acceptance into the Honors College will provide me with an education of rigor and will assist me in pushing myself to become a more outstanding student. Through my coursework, I am gaining the technical skills, leadership ability, and problem solving techniques to be a superintendent or project manager in the construction and energy industries, making a positive change in my community and the world. Leadership is one of the most influential qualities in my personal growth. During my high school experience, I served as the Vice President of the National Honors Society, where I had the privilege of promoting the importance of scholarship, leadership, service, and character by helping the organization achieve and meet its goals within our school and community. Through this position, I learned how to assist and to collaborate with others, how to execute an event, how to lead by example, and most importantly, that a leaders true value is not in what they accomplish, but how much the people around them grow. Another key element in my personal growth was my role as a mentor in the Peer Assistance Leadership Services program. The PALS program allowed me to directly help and to make a difference in the lives of younger students by mentoring and counseling them. I understood that younger students face the daily struggles of growing up which often are invisible to the adults in their lives, and I reveled in the role of a confident, helpful, positive individual whom the students could confide in, and look up to. The leadership skills I gained through this program were communications, empathy, and an increased understanding of how deeply an individual could be touched by the power of mentorship. This passion for mentorship still remains present within my college experience. I currently serve on campus at Prairie View A&M University as a Campus Tour Ambassador where I speak with prospective students and their families about the University and answer questions that they may have. The process of choosing a higher education institution is such a pivotal decision, and as a student, I feel a sense of privilege in helping students to envision themselves being a part of the Prairie View A&M family. Community service has also played a significant role in my growth as an individual. Through my membership at East Houston Trinity Baptist Church, I have been able to participate in numerous service projects geared toward individuals and families who are in need. Through my faith, I am taught that it is crucial to be a person of compassion, humility, and sacrifice. Additionally, I volunteer as a student ambassador for the Houston Food Bank, where I assist in providing food and resources to needy families. During this opportunity, I have met diverse groups of people who have broadened my perspectives, and the desire to serve others wherever possible grows stronger with each visit. Experiences have cultivated my understanding of success: it is not measured by professional recognition, or financial gains, but by the difference one is able to make in the lives of others. Whether assisting a student, providing resources to my community, advocating for my university, or overseeing a project which benefits an entire neighborhood, I have made a conscious effort to serve as an agent of positive change. This scholarship will not only benefit my academic career, but will also invest in the development of an individual whose personal journey thus far demonstrates a commitment to leadership, service, and lifelong learning. I have strived to achieve success by consistently giving my all in academics while remaining focused on aiding others in their efforts toward success. Through the continued journey toward my degree and a fulfilling career, I am eager to retain all that I have learned from my leadership, mentorship, and service opportunities, as I plan to use these experiences to develop future leaders, create opportunity for future generations, and ultimately, leave a lasting positive impact on the world around me.
7023 Minority Scholarship
I'm a student studying construction science at Prairie View A&M University with the hope to develop my career in the construction management field and the energy industry. My ultimate goal in life is to become a superintendent or a project manager where I can have the opportunity to manage projects that provide benefits for communities and where safety, quality, and efficiency are guaranteed. I have always been drawn to build and create things that have an enduring effect on society and people's lives. Whether it's for infrastructure, commercial buildings, or industrial facilities, I want my work to contribute to the growth and development of communities for many generations to come. Besides my studies, I also believe in and support leadership, community service, and personal development. I am an active member in my community through service at my church and in many of my campus organizations where I've been a leader. This has taught me the importance of lending a helping hand and assisting others achieve what they aspire for. I've learned through this that great leadership isn't about an individual but a willingness to empower and create opportunities for others. I intend to use my chosen major to impact communities by assisting with the completion of projects that have the potential to change people's quality of life while promoting safe and sustainable construction practices. The structures and facilities that we design, construct, and build serve a critical role in how people work, live, and interact with one another. By having a leadership role in the construction industry, I hope to be a part of projects that serve communities, create jobs and opportunities for future generations to prosper in. I am particularly invested in engaging younger people, especially young Black Americans, in the political process. I see voting as a tremendous tool that individuals can use to advocate for their communities and make future changes to the lives of everyone in our society. Many issues in our society that affect people from all backgrounds, such as education, employment, and public safety, are shaped by politicians at local, state, and national levels. By informed and involved, young people can be empowered to use their voices to stand up for and create a better society for themselves and for everyone around them, thus strengthening communities and promoting a representative democracy. In addition, I am passionate about creating awareness for and combating drug abuse and alcoholism. Through experiences I've had, I've witnessed how these problems negatively impact the lives of people, families, and entire communities and understand the role that education, responsibility, and treatment play in fighting these issues and improving people's quality of life. I plan on fulfilling my long term life goal of pursuing a career while providing a positive impact for communities by continuing my education, and hopefully one day becoming a superintendent and/or project manager where I can lead in constructing projects that benefit society. Whether through volunteering, mentoring, civic involvement, or through the projects I construct, my desire is to build and make a lasting, positive difference in the lives of the people around me and to create stronger, healthier, and empowered communities.

The biggest struggle of my young life was my own addiction to marijuana and psychedelics. What started as experimentation then developed into a lifestyle that began to control my decisions and hinder my overall development. Between the ages of fourteen and nineteen, as I was trying to navigate life as a teenager, focusing on schoolwork and my aspirations, I struggled with a serious substance abuse problem. The effects of my addiction stretched further than my personal life and relationship with myself; it had a terrible impact on my relationship with my parents. It had, in essence, destroyed their trust in me and made it seem, at certain points, as though I was an actual liability, that I was responsible for tarnishing the reputation and ideals they themselves had worked their lives to instill. Watching the disappointment in their eyes and feeling it as though it were my own was agonizing, but I couldn’t hide from the fact that my addiction wasn’t affecting them; my addiction was destroying them too. One of the harshest lessons I have learned, through many difficult and even dangerous experiences, is that ignoring your problems will not make them go away. For a certain period, drugs had became an excuse not to deal with the stresses and insecurities that adolescent life brings; however, they merely offered temporary fixes and created even greater long-term issues. Eventually, as I grew older, I realized that my aspirations for my future couldn’t coexist with the path that my life was on. I had a choice to make about the kind of man I wanted to be. Overcoming this challenge has allowed me to learn about accountability, discipline, and resilience. The struggles I went through, instead of defining me as a person who has failed and let down those around him, have given me opportunities to learn from my mistakes. I have been able to dedicate my focus to school, and now to my future endeavors, and as a Construction Science student I am pursuing a degree with the aspirations of becoming a superintendent or project manager. This path requires not only responsibility and a determined leadership ability but also sound decision-making, all of which have been honed and cultivated as a result of recovery. Now, I plan on continuing on a path where my life has a purpose, a life which is driven by discipline and service. Although I know that life doesn't have a real 'finish line', I am committed to living a life that revolves around making decisions that benefit my long-term goal of self-actualization, and have also developed empathy for those who are going through similar circumstances. I have learned the importance of asking for help and the potential for change that follows, and my life is no longer a tragedy but a testimonial to the ability to overcome life’s hurdles with persistence and a true desire to prove that not all hope is lost.

My future aspirations involve developing a successful career in the construction and energy industries and being responsible as a superintendent or a project manager of large projects. Currently I am acquiring a degree in Construction Science because I enjoy building, problem-solving and creating things that have an impact. In the future I want to be responsible for the teams of workers, project safety, cost efficiency and deliver quality structures that contribute to the lives of people. Chess is an activity that has helped prepare me for this pursuit. It is much different from construction management and at first glance has nothing to do with the industry but there are many lessons that I learned from chess which would be useful for a career in construction management. The most important thing that chess taught me is to think ahead. Every move in a chess game is consequential, so a chess player must think not only on the move they are about to make, but on many moves ahead. Similarly construction projects require thorough planning and foresight; a project manager or a superintendent must be able to predict possible challenges, allot resources properly, schedule tasks accurately and make decisions that will keep the project moving smoothly. This has made me think ahead and about the ultimate goal of my decision instead of only the next short-term benefit. Chess has also taught me patience and discipline. Very rarely do successful people win in this game by playing it with impatience and rushing their moves; a player must evaluate every possible option and be able to stay calm under pressure. An improper move can lead to many setbacks in chess but also in construction; I realized that one mistake could create many difficulties, but staying composed throughout the game and being able to improvise based on what is happening around me had been instrumental in not only getting better at chess but at staying level-headed and not giving into panic. Another lesson that chess taught me is to be held accountable for the moves I make. If I make a mistake in chess and lose a game I cannot just blame it on my opponent or on whatever happened at that time, it is my responsibility to learn from my mistake and try not to make the same move or mistake ever again. I believe this can and will be useful in a future career because success will surely come from taking responsibility for actions, learning from past failures and striving to always become better than I was yesterday. I want to take this same mindset to my degree and into my professional life. Lastly, chess taught me adaptability. I believe that it is impossible for any chess game to go exactly as planned and the player must always be ready to change their plan based on the present scenario. In construction it is always the same; weather delay, scheduling issue, resource delay or an unexpected obstacle can affect the project schedule or cost of the project so I feel that chess helped me become ready for the unexpected and improvise a plan. I feel that I will be very successful in my future endeavors and in becoming a construction manager. These qualities which I have learned from playing chess and also from life will guide me in achieving my goals of success and achievement. Like in chess, the same way, a successful future comes from careful planning and quick thinking and I hope to use the same values when taking on each challenge and opportunity in my future professional life.

For me, college is all about opportunity, growth, and building a brighter future. It’s not just about earning a degree; it’s about developing the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to achieve my goals and make a positive difference in the lives of others. College offers me a pathway to possibilities that would be difficult to attain otherwise, and it serves as the foundation upon which I am building my future. As a student of Construction Science at Prairie View A&M University, I am pursuing a career in construction management and have the goal of one day becoming a superintendent or project manager in the construction and energy sectors. I have always been intrigued by the process of building and creating, and what excites me most about construction is the prospect of playing a part in projects that shape communities for generations to come. Regardless of whether it is an office building, a power plant, or an essential road, construction projects directly contribute to the environment in which people learn, work, and live. I wish to be a part of these projects as they are brought to fruition, ensuring that their execution is characterized by safety, efficiency, and quality. I believe that college will afford me the opportunity to learn the fundamental knowledge and leadership qualities required for my profession. Through my classes, internships, and participation in activities on campus, I will gain knowledge that will aid me in becoming a proficient and competent professional. While the acquisition of these qualities will aid me in reaching my goals and in becoming a well-rounded individual, they will also prepare me for the challenges associated with managing teams and projects. Every project that I have worked on to this point will be surpassed by those I undertake as a graduate of this program. Although career advancement will be one of my objectives in college, I also hope to have a positive impact on other people’s lives as well. Mentoring my family, teacher and community leaders was incredibly inspiring throughout my life, and now it is my intention to positively impact those around me throughout my career. I am excited by the prospect of working with younger individuals whom may not possess similar opportunities as I have. Mentoring will be a key element in encouraging other students, young and old alike, to seek a career through higher education. Another priority in college will be the enrichment of my community. My service to my church and involvement in various student organizations have given me insight into leadership: it means giving of myself and empowering others to succeed along with me. My long-term commitment involves continuing these efforts through community outreach, mentorship, service initiatives, and career/education development activities. Ultimately, college will be about creating opportunities, not just for myself, but for the many lives that I am certain I will touch along the way. It will give me the education that I will need to develop a career for myself, provide for my family, and become the leader that I envision myself being; it will also grant me the opportunity to inspire others to achieve their dreams and to continue the important work of serving my community.

Higher education serves as the crucial link connecting my current circumstances with the aspirations I hold for the future. As I strive to cultivate a career in construction and energy at Prairie View A&M University as a student in Construction Science, my ambition is to eventually reach a leadership position, be it a superintendent, project manager, or construction executive, within these fields. I believe that the foundation provided by higher education will furnish me with the essential technical skills, leadership acumen, professional connections, and practical experiences required to fulfill my objectives, all while affording me avenues to serve my community. My interest in construction is born from an intrinsic desire to create and build; I have always been captivated by the endeavor of transforming abstract ideas into tangible, usable objects within the everyday lives of individuals. Structures and facilities are more than mere shelter or economic engines; they are architects of how people exist, work, and interact. Through my coursework in college, I am gaining a deeper comprehension of project management, construction practices, safety measures, scheduling, and leadership. These will enable me to manage and execute large, complex construction projects effectively and safely. Outside of the technical skills gained, college has also played a vital role in my personal and professional growth. As a student, I have acquired discipline, flexibility, and perseverance while juggling schoolwork, campus leadership roles, employment, and community service, all of which have enhanced my time-management and problem-solving skills. I have discovered that true success is a result of working together with others, communicating effectively, and possessing a dedication to constant learning. I anticipate that the relationships forged with professors, mentors, classmates, and professionals will continue to influence my decisions and lead to many opportunities throughout my professional journey. I look forward to contributing to substantial construction and energy projects that will benefit communities nationwide. Whether it be industrial facilities, commercial buildings, refineries, or infrastructure, I want to contribute to improvements that will enhance the quality of life for many and create jobs, which I understand, begins by leading and supervising projects in an organization to their safe and successful completion.Safety is very important to me, as I feel that each employee should have the ability to return home to their family safely at the end of each day, and through hard work, I can achieve my goal of making that a reality while simultaneously strengthening an organization's bottom line through positive and safe work practices. This ambition of giving back goes beyond my professional life. All my life, I have witnessed the benefits of mentorship and volunteer service. I am a volunteer through my church, East Houston Trinity Baptist Church, and I am very active within my school. Through these experiences, I have realized that true leadership entails giving back; as I progress through my career, I wish to mentor young people who may not have had the guidance, resources, and opportunities I have been blessed with so that they too can obtain the chance of higher education and pursue careers in areas of opportunity such as engineering and construction; it is a testament to hard work, determination, and opportunity that such endeavors are indeed achievable. As one of the first people from my community who will have the chance to pursue higher education and seize the opportunities that come with it, I want to inspire my community to take opportunities given to them by higher education to succeed, even if they face some hardship; the financial obstacles I have faced thus far make me want to utilize my potential future success to invest not only in my own family but also in supporting opportunities for others through mentorship, community service and scholarships. With receiving this scholarship, my financial worries will ease and I will be able to allocate more of my time toward my education and opportunities for professional development and community service. Beyond that, it represents an investment in the impact that I hope to make on others through the pursuit of higher education; this degree is more than just a step towards an career for me; it will serve as the key in my endeavor to create a legacy of leadership, service, and positive change in the lives of many. By earning this degree and continually growing as a professional, I hope to positively impact a multitude of individuals and the nation as a whole.

If there was one thing that I was known for when I grew up it was my hair. It always grew at an incredibly fast rate and still to this day. Therefore my mother always tried new things with my hair while I was growing up, and at one time I was sporting a mohawk; the next a set of braids; thenplaits; then twists; and then a huge Afro. If there was one hairstyle to be found, it has been worn by me. While my mother loved to make up new ways to make my hair look interesting, the kid with the changing hairdo seemed to be a popular talking point in school. As a kid I do not believe that I always enjoyed that sort of attention. People point out what is different about other kids quickly, and sometimes my hair was an easy source of comments and jokes, I just wished that I did not look so different. As I got older I was grateful for the experience. The kid with the funny hairstyle learned quickly at a young age, what others think does not make what is or is not "you", the goal of blending in is a ridiculous one, embrace what makes you different! The other thing that has always made me a little unusual is that I switch between my left and right hands. I am not entirely left or right handed, I just do different things with different hands. I eat with my left hand, however, I play sports with my right. I use the mouse with my left hand; however I draw and write with my right hand. People often react as though I do not know how to do whatever it is that I am doing when they see me using my left and right hands interchangeably depending on the situation because almost every person they know does not switch. Regardless these things seem natural to me and so, I do not see a point in even noticing them until another person points it out. People notice, but you should never be ashamed that there are unique aspects of yourself that make you unique and memorable. When I reflect on my super fast growing hair and how I use my right and left hands at different times I believe that both have helped to mold my confidence. They have enabled me to learn to accept myself for who I am instead of trying to become somebody that I was not and these qualities are something I hold onto now because they represent traits that make us individualistic.
ESOF Academic Scholarship
My educational goal is to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Science from Prairie View A&M University and develop the technical knowledge, leadership abilities, and professional experience necessary to become a leader within the construction industry. I chose Construction Science because it combines my passion for problem-solving, leadership, and creating tangible results that positively impact communities. Through my coursework and hands-on experiences, I am gaining valuable knowledge in project management, construction operations, safety, scheduling, budgeting, and team coordination. These skills will provide the foundation for a successful and meaningful career. Professionally, I aspire to become a construction superintendent or project manager responsible for overseeing large-scale commercial, industrial, and energy projects. I am particularly interested in opportunities within the construction and energy sectors because of the critical role they play in developing infrastructure, creating jobs, and supporting economic growth. My goal is to begin my career by gaining hands-on experience in field operations, project management, and construction safety. As I continue to grow professionally, I hope to advance into executive leadership positions where I can influence major projects, mentor future professionals, and help shape the direction of the industry. Beyond personal success, I want my career to create opportunities for others. One of my long-term goals is to use my professional knowledge, network, and financial resources to support and invest in Black-owned businesses. I believe that entrepreneurship and business ownership are powerful tools for creating economic mobility and generational wealth. By providing mentorship, guidance, and eventually financial support to aspiring entrepreneurs, I hope to help create stronger businesses and stronger communities. I also envision opening a community-centered barbershop that serves as more than a place for haircuts. I want it to be a space where young Black men can receive mentorship, discuss financial literacy, learn about career opportunities, and build meaningful relationships that encourage personal and professional growth. My commitment to civic and public service is demonstrated through my involvement in multiple organizations and volunteer efforts. I actively volunteer at East Houston Trinity Baptist Church, where I participate in service activities that support both church members and the surrounding community. My faith has taught me the importance of serving others, giving back, and using my abilities to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me. I am also involved in Brothers Leading and Cultivating Knowledge (B.L.A.C.K.), a notable student organization at Prairie View A&M University that focuses on leadership, service, and student engagement. Through B.L.A.C.K., I contribute to events and initiatives that benefit the greater Prairie View student population. These events include sporting activities, graduation celebrations, community-building programs, and other initiatives designed to create a more connected and supportive campus environment. My involvement has allowed me to develop leadership skills while serving students from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, I serve as a Campus Tour Ambassador, an unpaid volunteer role in which I guide prospective students and transfer students through Prairie View A&M University. Through these tours, I have the opportunity to represent my university, answer questions, and help students envision themselves pursuing higher education. I understand that for many students, choosing a college can be intimidating, and I take pride in helping make that process more welcoming and informative. Mentorship is another area where I am deeply committed to service. Through both B.L.A.C.K. and the HoodEscape Empowerment & Resilience Team, I mentor younger students and freshmen as they navigate college life and pursue their goals. HoodEscape focuses on providing opportunities, resources, and guidance to individuals who may not have had access to them otherwise. By sharing my experiences, encouraging academic success, and offering support, I hope to help students build confidence and recognize their potential. Ultimately, my educational and professional goals are closely connected to my commitment to service. I do not view success as something to be achieved solely for personal gain. Instead, I believe success carries a responsibility to uplift others and create opportunities for future generations. Through my education, career, volunteer work, and mentorship efforts, I hope to leave a lasting impact by helping individuals overcome barriers, pursue their ambitions, and build stronger communities. My goal is not only to become a successful construction professional but also to become a leader who empowers others to achieve success and create positive change in the world around them.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My ultimate ambition is to become a leader in the construction industry, while also creating opportunities for my community to thrive. Professionally, I intend to enter the construction management field through positions such as field engineer, project manager, construction safety, or superintendent. Through these roles, I will gain broad experience managing large-scale projects, leading teams, overseeing safe worksites and budgets and schedules. Ultimately, I aim to reach executive leadership in the construction or energy sector and apply my network and financial capital to invest in my community and Black-owned businesses. My immediate priority is graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Science from Prairie View A&M University. In the remaining years of my education, I plan to maintain strong grades while gaining experience through internships with large construction, industrial and energy companies. The internships will allow me to obtain industry experience, build my network and learn about project management systems, scheduling software, safety procedures and fieldwork. Additionally, I will enhance my leadership skills through campus activities and involvement in organizations. The timeline I anticipate starts with my graduation from Prairie View A&M University within the next few years. In that timeframe, my projected annual college expenses for tuition, fees, books, housing, transportation and professional certification will range from $15,000-25,000 per year after scholarships and financial aid. Scholarships are important because they will offset the amount I will need to personally cover, freeing me to focus my attention on education and personal and professional growth instead of financial strain. After graduating, my primary goal will be to secure a full-time position with a top construction, engineering or energy company. During the subsequent five to ten years, I will build experience through increasingly larger projects while earning certifications, and become proficient in leadership, budget and cost control, risk management, safety and operations. While gaining experience, I will build my personal savings and investment capital to provide me with financial flexibility to launch entrepreneurial ventures and invest in the community. Looking to the long-term future, my desire is to build community impact through my professional achievements. One ambition is to support Black-owned businesses by providing capital, mentorship, and access to business resources. Additionally, I plan to create a community-focused barbershop that fosters mentoring, financial literacy and career opportunities and provides a networking space. Initial start-up expenses for this project may range from $50,000-100,000 for a location, equipment, staff and operating costs, and I will aim to achieve this through consistent saving, building business knowledge, and securing partners. Although each route differs in execution, all require discipline, knowledge, hands-on experience and financial planning. Regardless of whether I reach my objectives through corporate leadership, entrepreneurship, or both, the ultimate aim is to leverage my education and career successes to create opportunity for others and make a lasting, positive impact for future generations.
Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship
Growing up, I saw how easy it is for people to be limited by their circumstances. Whether it's a lack of financial knowledge, limited opportunities, or not having the right guidance, many talented individuals never reach their full potential. Because of this, I focus on empowering others through financial education, leadership, community support, and economic growth. I want to help create a culture where people, especially young Black men, understand that their current situation does not define their future. Success is achievable through education, discipline, and hard work. At my university and throughout my career, I hope to inspire others to aim for excellence beyond what is expected of them. I believe that leadership is not just about holding a title. It’s about inspiring others to be the best version of themselves. I want to highlight the importance of civic engagement, including voting and getting involved in the community. I encourage students to support one another instead of competing against each other. Strong communities are built when people collaborate, share knowledge, and invest in each other’s success. One of my biggest inspirations is Malcolm X. What inspires me most about him is his strong commitment to improving the lives of Black people through education, self-determination, and community empowerment. He urged individuals to think critically, take charge of their future, and work together to strengthen their communities. His legacy reminds me that real change starts when people are willing to invest in themselves and uplift those around them. As a Construction Science student looking to build a career in construction management and leadership, I plan to use my education and experience to create opportunities for others. In the future, I hope to fund, mentor, and support Black-owned businesses that struggle to access capital, professional networks, or industry know-how. Economic empowerment is one of the best ways to strengthen communities, create jobs, and build generational wealth. By sharing my knowledge and resources, I aim to help aspiring entrepreneurs turn their ideas into successful businesses. I also envision creating a unique barbershop environment that serves a greater purpose than just giving haircuts. Barbershops have traditionally been important gathering places in Black communities. I want to build a space where Black men feel comfortable discussing finances, career goals, mental health, leadership, and personal growth. I imagine a place where mentorship, networking, and meaningful conversations happen naturally, helping young men develop confidence and direction for their future. Ultimately, my goal is to leave a legacy of empowerment. Through education, leadership, economic growth, and community building, I aim to create opportunities that help others realize their potential and overcome barriers. I believe that when people are equipped with knowledge, support, and opportunity, they can change not only their own lives but entire communities for generations to come.

My future goal is to become a construction superintendent or project manager in the construction and energy fields. I am currently pursuing a degree in Construction Science. I am committed to building a career that allows me to lead projects that improve communities, create jobs, and make a lasting impact on society. Through my education and internship experience, I have developed a strong interest in project management, field operations, and construction safety. I hope to one day oversee large-scale commercial, industrial, or energy projects while mentoring the next generation of construction professionals. My journey to this point has required resilience and determination. During college, I balanced academics, professional development, and entrepreneurship while facing significant personal challenges. I experienced the loss of my great-aunt, who played a major role in raising me during my childhood. At the same time, I dealt with challenges related to ADHD, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Despite these obstacles, I remained focused on my education and sought opportunities to strengthen my future career. These experiences taught me perseverance, flexibility, and the importance of moving forward, even during tough times. In addition to my full-time studies, I gained practical experience through internships and by running my own barbering business. Operating a business taught me valuable lessons about responsibility, communication, customer service, and financial management. These skills have improved my ability to lead others and solve problems effectively, qualities that will be essential throughout my professional career. The Bright Lights Scholarship would provide much more than financial help—it would open doors for me. As a college student, juggling educational expenses with everyday living costs can be tough. This scholarship would ease the financial burden of tuition, books, transportation, and other education-related expenses. This support would let me dedicate more time to my studies, professional growth, and career-building opportunities instead of stressing about finances. More importantly, this scholarship would be an investment in my future. Every opportunity I receive moves me closer to becoming the leader I want to be. By supporting my education, the Bright Lights Scholarship would help me develop the knowledge, skills, and experience I need to succeed in the construction field. I plan to use that education to work on projects that strengthen communities, drive economic growth, and improve lives. I believe that challenges do not define a person; how they respond to those challenges does. My experiences have strengthened my determination to succeed, and I am committed to achieving my goals no matter the obstacles. The Bright Lights Scholarship would help me continue my journey by providing the support I need to pursue my education, advance my career, and ultimately make a meaningful impact in my profession and community.
