Being able to connect with and help others in need excites my passion for nursing. I aspire to be a vessel of light and positivity in other peoples lives all while doing what I love. I hope to graduate nursing school and work to build generational wealth for my future children.
A quote I live by is "Eternal sunshine... learn to embrace what comes and free what goes."

Deborah Stevens Pediatric Nursing Scholarship
My life experiences have prepared me to be a nurse in the only way possible, by shaping my character, virtue, and integrity. I firmly set my mind into pursuing the nursing field because of an experience I had with two nurses at the time I was taken to the hospital back in 2018. I was in a car accident which unfortunately caused me to experience shock and slightly injure muscles in my right leg. Before such circumstances, I had already expressed feelings of appreciation for the nursing profession. I had only seen nursing as an “outlet” in which I could survive and help my family thrive financially. Throughout my time at the hospital, I was cared for by kind and patient nurses who were able to calm me down in my moment of extreme anxiety. As I watched nurses come in and out of my room asking if I was okay, my eyes grew with wonder, and my heart filled with gratitude for those nurses who gave 150% to managing my safety and recovery. I inspire to make an impact in people’s lives by assisting them in overcoming sicknesses that in some cases may lead to death just as the nurses who helped me in my time of need did. My passion for nursing then grew as it was clear to me that nursing is my calling.
Another life experience that also added to my motivation into wanting to become a nurse was after almost losing my mother in 2015. My mother experienced many difficulties when giving birth to my little brother Pedro. A nurse who was in the room checking up on her noticed that she was yellow and complaining of pain. If it was not for that nurse coming in to check up on my mom, there was a possibility of us losing her. This experience only reiterated my deep love for the nursing profession. This global pandemic we are all still dealing with only served to push my drive for wanting to be on the front lines and care for others. Empathy and kindness could go a long way and nurses are the exact definition of that. This is the story of me and my dedication to pursuing the nursing profession not only for what it can bring financially but for what it can bring for society, communities, and people in their most vulnerable selves.
I think of pediatric nursing not only as a way for me to care for a child but as a way to provide care and support to a whole family. Being able to practice medicine and at the same time, express my love for children through my profession would be the most valuable thing to me. I want to be able to provide comfort and safety for children who may or may not have had any at home. Oftentimes, children are the ones that end up teaching adults great lessons on compassion and kindness and I think that is what pediatric nursing is all about.

As a child of an immigrant and first-generation college student, there is such a great weight on our shoulders to succeed and get into a profession in which we can best provide for our family. The hardships my parents and I continue to overcome are what motivate me and have come to define who I am as a person today. The value I place on education and those in the healthcare profession is the utmost. Being able to save money would help propel me towards greater financial freedom and stability all while allowing me to pursue my degree.

To me, an extraordinary nurse is one who makes a difference and changes lives. A nurse who is kind-hearted and shows empathy with each patient is an extraordinary one. I also personally believe that an extraordinary nurse puts patients first and simply cares for people with every ounce of their heart. A nurse who is resilient on those days in which the job may be tough is a remarkable nurse to me. Nurses that do not seek recognition but endure to keep us moving forward are ones which I admire. In my eyes, nurses that have a willingness to make a sacrifice and transform healthcare for the better are truly extraordinary. Having the privilege of receiving an education that allows me to pursue my dreams is something I will never take for granted.
