    My Brother's Keeper Scholarship
As I peeked outside the drive-thru window, a few chips of cotton danced into the darkness. Soon the gloomy night sky began to unveil its wrath, launching bursts of wintry confetti accompanied by the howling razor wind. The endless waves of frosty squalls slammed the coarse gravel plain, soon the constant buzzing sound of the heater abruptly aborted. While my dad tried turning the heater on and off, I was rustling and rummaging over a pile of business cards and flyers. I dialed one of those numbers only to immediately cancel it after realizing it was Sunday. “How can this day get any worse?” I thought to myself. There was no hope of getting the heat up, and we had to work through this frigid evening shift. The next morning, the first thing I did was to call for repair service. The technicians came and examined the unit and stated that the entire system needed to be replaced. They gave an estimated total of $9,000 for the repair. “That is like twice the amount we made last month!” my dad exclaimed. We contacted our landlord, but he shoved the issue back to us, even though this building was already decades old when we started renting it. However, it turned out that we were indeed responsible for heating repairs. When my parents signed the lease and contracts, the lawyer never said or explained anything about repairs, and because of that mistake, it eventually came back to haunt us. I have discovered many new things from this unfortunate event. Obviously, hiring a good lawyer… But I realized I wanted to be a real estate lawyer to help others understand contracts and not let them sink into the same financial predicament that my family and I fell into. Therefore, I believe earning the My Brother's Keeper Scholarship will further allow me to access more educational resources to cultivate my studies. As of now, I am a junior in high school and aspire to major in political science or business in college. After getting my bachelor's, I want to go into law school to become a real estate lawyer. I have immense passion in law and real estate. From my experience in my school’s student government and managing a restaurant and a non-profit organization, I have garnered essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, organization, and management. I also have grasped abundant knowledge about education and public relations due to my experience of teaching Ukrainian teens and adults English and founding clubs at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, and University of Washington - Seattle. Furthermore, I will be a first generation college student and a minority, coming from a low income family. Though this event was economically devastating, I discovered what I wanted to be when I am older, what my dream job involves, and what skills I have mastered. I felt motivated and awakened. I carried my feet and went on to accomplish many new things to prepare myself in becoming a lawyer.
