My passion for understanding the inner workings of my favorite roller coaster is my first memory of being interested in engineering. Over the following nine years, I noticed how easily I could lose track of time learning more about different engineering accomplishments. I am mesmerized, whether I am researching something as simple as how a golf ball’s dimples affect how it sails through the air, or how fighter jets defy gravity. I soon realized how mathematics is integral in designing amusement park rides, golf equipment, and planes. I have always excelled in math and science, and I am taking a rigorous course load at my school geared toward engineering, hoping to create something similar someday.

In Luke 10:33-37, Jesus told the Parable of the Good Samaritan, a person who took pity on someone who was robbed and beaten. This helpful stranger cared for the injured man’s wounds and provided him food, money and shelter. This was to illustrate the golden rule that you should love your neighbor as yourself. The Good Samaritan possessed many selfless qualities including empathy, kindness, altruism, courage, and generosity.
I know I am not perfect, but I strive to be like the Good Samaritan. For as long as I can remember, I have been volunteering with my family at food banks, children’s enrichment centers, and homeless shelters. I chose my Jesuit high school because its motto is “Men for Others” and it would provide me with even more service opportunities. My classmates and I focus on giving back to those who need help.
I am currently a co-organizer of my high school’s St. Joseph of Arimathea pallbearer ministry which assists during funerals by serving as pallbearers and providing emotional support and dignity to grieving families. We recognize how hard it is to lose a loved one. We provide comfort to the families by helping them in their time of grief by helping carry the casket, praying with the families, or extending a shoulder to cry on. Unfortunately, sometimes the six of us pallbearers are the only attendants at the deceased’s service. We also have an annual Mass at Potter’s Field where we honor the homeless who have died. We truly show respect for the dignity of all lives. Our organization serves around 170 funerals each year performing these corporal services of mercy.
For the past few years, I have served as a Core Team Leader of our annual Christmas Food Drive which prepares, packages and distributes 700+ food baskets and toys to needy families in the Cleveland area. Also, I am an active member of our Labre ministry which provides food, clothing and companionship to the city’s homeless every Sunday evening. We extend kindness and generosity to those who are less fortunate in our community.
Since I also wanted to help people outside of my city, I have spent a week in rural Appalachia rebuilding homes for people who needed help and were not able to do it on their own. Repairing Kathy’s roof brought her joy and hope that she would not be cold over the winter. I have also spent time in a Tanzanian orphanage reading to children and playing games with them. These toddlers and preschool aged kids were so excited to spend time with us playing soccer or doing activity books.
Being able to help these people in Cleveland, West Virginia and Africa has given me more of a sense of purpose and has provided me personal growth by pushing me outside of my comfort zone. It has further developed my understanding and empathy for those with different backgrounds and challenges than myself. I believe that although I am not perfect, I am working towards acting as a Good Samaritan.
