"Mija, ¿qué dijo el doctor?" my mother asked, her eyes searching mine for answers. In that moment, I realized that helping someone can mean much more than offering a hand. It can mean becoming their voice when they cannot speak for themselves. As the daughter of Mexican immigrants, I have spent much of my life helping my family navigate systems that were often confusing because of language barriers. Those experiences taught me that ordinary acts of service can change someone's life, and they inspired my commitment to helping others. That experience taught me that everyone, regardless of the language they speak or the circumstances they face, deserves to be heard with dignity. I do not believe destiny is simply something we inherit. Growing up, I watched my parents work long hours to provide opportunities for my sister and me. While they sacrificed for our future, I learned the importance of giving back to the people around me. For the past seven years, I have volunteered at Fiesta Fort Wayne, helping organize events, assisting vendors, supporting sponsors, and welcoming community members. Through this experience, I saw how cultural events bring people together and create a sense of belonging. I learned that strong communities are built when people are willing to serve others without expecting anything in return. Volunteering also reinforced something I had been learning since childhood. Growing up between two languages taught me that although people may speak differently or come from different backgrounds, everyone wants to feel understood, respected, and safe. That belief guides every decision I make when serving others. My commitment to service continued through tutoring and mentoring younger students. As a peer tutor and Student Ambassador, I helped students academically while also supporting families, especially Spanish-speaking families, who sometimes felt overwhelmed by school processes. Being able to explain information in their native language and help them feel included reminded me of my own family's experiences. These moments reinforced my belief that everyone deserves access to opportunities, regardless of language, background, or circumstances. Every family I helped reminded me of my own. I knew how overwhelming it felt to navigate unfamiliar systems, and I wanted others to feel the same relief my family felt whenever someone showed us patience and kindness. As I begin my studies in Criminal Justice alongside Cybersecurity, I want to continue being an advocate for people who often feel unheard. My goal is to protect victims, advocate for families, strengthen trust between communities and the justice system, and ensure that every individual is treated with dignity and fairness. Whether I am helping someone navigate a difficult situation, supporting victims who need someone to listen, or using technology to prevent crime, I want my career to reflect the same purpose that first inspired me while translating for my mother: giving people a voice when they need one most. I do not believe destiny is simply something we inherit. I believe it is something we shape through every act of kindness, every choice to serve, and every person we choose to lift up. My parents taught me that success is measured by how many people we help along the way. I cannot change the circumstances people are born into, but I can help change the opportunities available to them. Whether I am translating for a family, mentoring a younger student, protecting a nonprofit from cyberattacks, or encouraging another first-generation student to believe in themselves, I want every person I meet to leave with more hope than they had before. That is the destiny I hope to shape and the future I want to help build.

"You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations. Insurance forms, appointment schedules, and handwritten notes covered our kitchen table. My mother worried about her treatment, my younger sister worried about what would happen next, and I had little time to worry about either. Instead, I focused on what needed to be done. Looking back, I realize that this instinct reflected a lesson I would later encounter during my junior year in Philosophy Club. Marcus Aurelius teaches that the mind is a compass, not a shield. It cannot stop the storm, but it can keep us moving in the right direction. Among the philosophers we discussed, Marcus Aurelius made the deepest impression on me. He felt less like an ancient Roman emperor and more like a mentor speaking across centuries. Before I ever read his work, I was already living much of the philosophy he described. His words did not introduce me to a new idea; they gave language to experiences I had already lived. The underlying meaning of his statement, "You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength," is that true strength does not come from controlling circumstances but from mastering one's response to them. Through his distinction between the mind and external events, Marcus Aurelius argues that resilience, freedom, and purpose are internal achievements rather than gifts provided by favorable conditions. The first word that demands attention is "power." Most people associate power with authority, influence, wealth, or the ability to control what happens around them. Marcus Aurelius presents a very different definition. He suggests that genuine power is not found in controlling others or manipulating circumstances. Instead, it is found in governing oneself. By beginning with the phrase "You have power," he reminds readers that they are not helpless, even when facing difficult situations. However, the source of that power is not external. It exists within the individual. This idea challenged me because much of life can feel unpredictable. As the daughter of Mexican immigrant parents and a first-generation college student, I have witnessed many situations that were beyond my family's control. Financial difficulties, language barriers, health concerns, and uncertainty about the future often seemed overwhelming. Yet Marcus Aurelius would argue that these circumstances do not determine our character. What matters is how we respond to them. His definition of power shifts the focus away from circumstances and toward personal responsibility. The next phrase, "over your mind," reveals where that power exists. Marcus Aurelius does not say that we have power over our grades, our finances, our health, or the actions of other people. He specifically identifies the mind as the domain we control. This distinction reflects a central Stoic belief: while external events happen to us, our judgments about those events belong to us. When I first encountered this idea in Philosophy Club, I admired it intellectually. Later, I came to understand it personally. When my mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, our household changed overnight. Doctor appointments became routine, insurance paperwork covered our kitchen table, and uncertainty lingered in every conversation. As the oldest daughter in my family, I learned to think one step ahead. When unexpected challenges appeared, I instinctively looked toward the next responsibility rather than the obstacle itself. While others worried about the storm, I searched for the path through it. While my mother focused on recovery and my younger sister worried about what would happen next, I felt an unspoken responsibility to remain steady. Fear would not translate the doctor's instructions. Worry would not organize appointments. Anxiety would not answer my sister's questions. I could not change my mother's diagnosis, but I could become a source of stability for the people I loved. I helped translate medical information, assisted with responsibilities at home, and supported my family however I could. In that moment, Marcus Aurelius's words became more than philosophy. They became reality. The phrase "not outside events" forms the heart of the passage. Marcus Aurelius draws a boundary between what belongs to us and what does not. Illness, loss, disappointment, and unexpected hardship exist beyond our control. Many people spend their lives fighting against this reality, believing that happiness depends on controlling every outcome. Marcus Aurelius rejects this belief. He argues that peace begins when we accept the limits of our influence. This idea reminds me of standing in the middle of a storm. No matter how much effort a person exerts, they cannot command the weather. They cannot stop the rain or calm the wind. What they can control is how they prepare, where they seek shelter, and whether they continue moving forward. In the same way, life presents storms that we do not choose. Marcus Aurelius teaches that strength comes not from controlling the storm but from learning how to stand within it. The word "realize" is equally significant. Marcus Aurelius does not say, "Learn this," or "Memorize this." He says, "Realize this." The word suggests a deeper understanding, a moment of recognition that changes how a person sees the world. Knowledge alone is not enough. Many people understand intellectually that they cannot control everything, yet they still become consumed by fear, frustration, or anxiety. To realize something means to internalize it so completely that it shapes one's actions. Marcus Aurelius chooses the word "realize" because understanding alone is not enough. A person can memorize a philosophy and still panic when adversity arrives. Realization occurs when an idea moves from the page into daily life, influencing decisions, habits, and character. For me, that realization came gradually. It emerged through responsibilities at home, through supporting my family, and through experiences that demanded resilience. It also developed through reading. Throughout my life, books became more than entertainment. They became a refuge. On difficult days, I would retreat into their pages and emerge with a wider perspective. Literature taught me that hardship was not unique to me; generations of thinkers, writers, and philosophers had wrestled with the same fears and uncertainties. In many ways, books became a lighthouse during storms I could not control. As the oldest daughter, I often felt responsible for helping others navigate uncertainty. Books became the place where I learned to navigate my own. Within their pages, I found not escape from reality but guidance for facing it. Reading was never simply an escape from reality. It was a way of understanding reality more deeply. The authors and philosophers I encountered offered perspectives that helped me navigate uncertainty. Marcus Aurelius was one of those voices. His words gave language to lessons I was already learning through experience. The final phrase, "and you will find strength," completes the argument. Marcus Aurelius does not promise that life will become easier. He does not claim that suffering will disappear. Instead, he argues that strength emerges when people understand where their true power lies. Strength is not the absence of hardship. It is the ability to face hardship without surrendering to it. This message has continued to influence my life. Whether I am pursuing higher education, preparing for a career, helping my family, or facing challenges that I cannot predict, I return to the same principle: I cannot control every event, but I can control my effort, my attitude, and my choices. Trusting that I can move forward even when the future is uncertain allows me to focus on what I can do today rather than fear what may happen tomorrow. Ultimately, the underlying meaning of Marcus Aurelius's statement is that human freedom begins within. External events will always be uncertain, and hardship is an unavoidable part of life. Yet individuals possess the ability to govern their thoughts, actions, and character. By recognizing this distinction, people discover a strength that circumstances cannot take away. Nearly two thousand years after it was written, Marcus Aurelius's message remains powerful because it reminds us that while we may not control the world around us, we always retain the power to determine who we become in response to it. Looking back, I realize that Marcus Aurelius never promised calm seas. Instead, he offered a compass. Through family hardship, responsibility, faith, and education, I have learned that strength is not found in escaping storms but in navigating them.
      First-Gen Futures Scholarship
Education has always been a beacon of hope for me a path that leads to a future full of possibilities and a chance to change the narrative for my family. As a first-generation Mexican American student, I understand the weight of this journey, not just for myself, but for the generations before me who couldn't access the opportunities I now have. I'm pursuing higher education because I want to build a legacy of empowerment for my family and my community. It's about more than just a degree it's about transforming obstacles into opportunities and using the knowledge l gain to advocate for others who face similar struggles. Growing up, I saw my parents work tirelessly to provide for our family, despite not having the resources or knowledge of the system that others might take for granted. I witnessed their sacrifices and realized early on that education would be the key to breaking cycles and creating new opportunities for future generations. Their resilience, despite the barriers they faced, inspired me to work hard and aim high. Pursuing higher education is my way of honoring their journey and continuing the fight for a better future. Preparing for college as a first-generation student has been a challenging yet rewarding experience. With no road map from my parents, l've had to navigate the complex college admissions process on my own. I sought guidance from teachers, counselors, and mentors, taking every opportunity to learn about the requirements, financial aid, and application procedures. Understanding how important it was to prepare for the academic challenges ahead, I enrolled in dual-credit courses during high school to ease the transition to college-level coursework. These experiences have taught me time management, organization, and how to balance the demands of both high school and college-level expectations. They've built my confidence in my ability to handle whatever academic hurdles may come my way in the future. Additionally, I've taken on leadership roles and actively participated in extracurricular activities, such as being a student ambassador, volunteering in my community, and being involved in choir. These activities have allowed me to develop crucial skills like communication, empathy, and teamwork, all of which will be invaluable as I continue my academic and professional journey. I've learned the importance of using my voice to represent others, particularly in my work with non-English-speaking families, which fuels my desire to pursue a career in law and advocate for people who face language and cultural barriers. Financially, I've been proactive in preparing for the costs of higher education. I've researched scholarship opportunities, sought advice on financial aid, and learned how to budget effectively. By taking these steps, l've ensured that l'm doing everything I can to reduce the financial burden on my family. This scholarship would provide crucial support, enabling me to focus more on my studies and less on financial worries, which will ultimately allow me to make the most of my college experience. Ultimately, pursuing higher education is not just about personal achievement it's a way to give back to the community that shaped me. It's about becoming a lawyer who advocates for others, just as I've learned to advocate for my family. I am determined to use my education as a tool to make a difference, to lift others up, and to create a future where opportunities are accessible to everyone. This scholarship will not only support my dreams but will also help me lay the foundation for the kind of future I want to build-for myself and for those who come after me.

I plan to pursue a degree in law, focusing on immigration law, because of my experiences growing up as a first-generation Mexican American. Watching my parents navigate the complexities of immigration has shaped my desire to help others facing similar struggles. I've seen how difficult it can be for immigrants to find the right legal support, and I want to be the person who helps bridge that gap. As an immigration lawyer, I can advocate for those who need a voice, ensuring their rights are protected and helping them build a better future. Alongside law, I'm also drawn to entrepreneurship, particularly in the e-commerce space, focusing on beauty and health products. Entrepreneurship excites me because it allows me to create something meaningful, solve problems, and share products I believe in with a broader audience. Beauty and wellness are areas I'm passionate about, and I want to build a business that prioritizes accessibility and authenticity. This venture will allow me to apply my creativity, and I see it as an opportunity to create something that can provide value and positively impact others. I believe my success in both law and entrepreneurship stems from my experiences and the qualities l've developed along the way. As the oldest child in my family, l've learned responsibility, time management, and resilience. Helping care for my mother through health challenges further honed my ability to handle multiple responsibilities while staying focused on long-term goals. I've faced obstacles and learned how to adapt to unexpected situations, which is crucial in both business and law. Resilience is key to success— whether it's overcoming setbacks in a legal case or finding new solutions for a business challenge. I know I can handle whatever comes my way with perseverance and creativity. In addition to resilience, my passion for community service plays an important role in my career goals. I've always felt a strong connection to helping others, particularly those who are often marginalized. Whether it's through my work as a student ambassador or volunteering, I understand the value of making a difference in people's lives. In law, this means advocating for my clients. In business, it means focusing on customer needs and offering products that genuinely improve lives. To me, a successful life is not just defined by personal achievements or wealth. It's about creating positive change and leaving a lasting impact. Whether through my work as a lawyer advocating for justice or as an entrepreneur building a business, I want to make a meaningful contribution to the world around me. A successful life is one where l've used my passions and skills to help others, grow personally, and contribute to my community.
      Charli XCX brat Fan Scholarship
My favorite song on Charli XCX's brat album has to be "Used to Know Me." It's the perfect blend of confidence and vulnerability, and I honestly can't get enough of it. The song taps into that feeling of shedding an old version of yourself and breaking free from what's held you back, especially in the aftermath of a relationship or a rough period in life. The lyrics are brutally honest in the best way possible: "I'm not who you used to know." It's empowering to hear someone embrace change like that, as if they're finally letting go of something that no longer fits. I can really relate to that. Whether it's dealing with tough moments in school, life, or personal relationships, the song speaks to the freedom that comes when you let go of expectations and embrace who you're becoming. It's a reminder that it's okay to grow and change, even if it means leaving parts of yourself behind. The beat is contagious, and Charli's vocals bring this cool, rebellious energy that makes the whole song feel like an anthem for reclaiming your power. When I listen to it, it's like a jolt of confidence-it makes me feel like I can take on the world, no matter what. It's this blend of fun and meaningful that makes "Used to Know Me" stand out. It's not just a song; it's a vibe I carry with me when I need a reminder to keep evolving. For me, Charli XCX's brat is an album full of moments like this—where there's a deeper message wrapped in catchy beats. And "Used to Know Me" is the one that truly captures that essence of growth and empowerment, something I connect with on so many levels.
      Love Island Fan Scholarship
Imagine the excitement and chaos when secrets start flying around the Love Island villa. That's exactly what the Island of Secrets challenge would bring to the table. This challenge is all about trust, teamwork, and, of course, drama-because what would Love Island be without a little chaos? Contestants will work in teams to uncover hidden clues that lead them to a shocking secret about one of their fellow islanders. The goal? Not just to win, but to see how the revelation of a personal secret turns the villa upside down. To kick things off, contestants are split into two teams, mixing up couples and singles to create some serious tension. The teams are given a series of tricky clues that will lead them on a hunt around the villa. From answering questions about each other's pasts to completing physical challenges, they'll need to work together and think quickly. The first team to decode all the clues and uncover the secret hidden at the final location wins the challenge. But there's more to it than just being quick on their feet-each clue will bring them closer to a big reveal. Once they've cracked the final clue, both teams will find themselves in front of a "treasure chest" containing a personal secret about one of their fellow islanders. It could be a confession about a past love, an unexpected career goal, or even something quirky no one saw coming. The twist is, the secret isn't just for fun-it's going to shake things up. The team that finds the secret will return to the villa and dramatically reveal it to the whole group. The fallout? That's where the real action happens. It could trigger new alliances, make existing couples question everything, or even create a moment of vulnerability that changes the game. Points are awarded based on how quickly the teams solve the clues and discover the secret. The winning team gets an awesome prize, like a private date or immunity from elimination. The losing team? They might have to face some extra challenges or a disadvantage in the next round. It's a test of strategy, wit, and how well they can keep their composure when the villa is about to explode with drama. The Island of Secrets challenge would bring out the best-and the worst—in everyone. It's a perfect mix of lighthearted fun, emotional tension, and dramatic revelations. After all, what's a reality show without a few secrets being spilled?
      Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish has this rare ability to put into words the emotions I struggle to express. Her music doesn't just sound good—it feels like something, like she's singing the things l've been too afraid to say out loud. If I had to pick just three songs that truly resonate with me, they would be everything i wanted, idontwannabeyouanymore, and my future. everything i wanted hits me the hardest. It's about success not always feeling like success, about chasing something for so long and wondering if it will ever be enough. As a first-generation student, l've felt that weight-the pressure to achieve, to make my family's sacrifices worth it. Sometimes, I wonder if reaching my goals will bring the happiness I expect or if I'll just keep running, always searching for the next big accomplishment. But the song also reminds me that I'm not alone, that even when I feel like l'm drowning in expectations, there are people who love and support me. Then there's idontwannabeyouanymore. This one feels like a mirror, reflecting all the self-doubt l've carried. Growing up, I thought I had to be everything for everyone-the responsible daughter, the perfect student, the one who never made mistakes. But constantly trying to live up to that image left me questioning if I was enough. This song reminds me that self-worth isn't about being perfect. It's about being real, about accepting the parts of myself that l've been too harsh on. And then, my future. This song is hope in music form. It reminds me that my story isn't just about the struggles—I have something to look forward to. There's a version of me out there, someone I'm becoming, someone strong, capable, and excited for what's next. It's easy to get caught up in fear of the unknown, but this song makes me want to embrace it. Billie's music makes me feel seen. These songs remind me that I'm not alone in my fears, that my struggles don't define me, and that my future is mine to create. And honestly, that's something I need to hear.
      Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
"Got your whole life ahead of you, you're only nineteen / But I fear that they already got all the best parts of me." - Olivia Rodrigo, Logical I'm not nineteen yet, but this lyric captures exactly how I feel. Sometimes, it seems like I've already given so much of myself—my time, energy, and emotions—that I wonder what's left. As a first-generation student, I don't just carry my own dreams. I carry my family's hopes, my younger sister's expectations, and the unspoken responsibility of making the sacrifices worth it. Adolescence is supposed to be about self-discovery, but for me, it often felt more like survival. I learned early that being the oldest meant being responsible. I translated for my parents at doctor's appointments, filled out paperwork that even I didn't fully understand, and balanced school with caregiving when my mom was sick. I wasn't just a student; I was an advocate, a guide, and sometimes even the emotional pillar of my family. There were nights when I stayed up studying after long days of helping at home, trying to convince myself that the exhaustion was worth it. I juggled difficult classes, extracurriculars, and college applications while also making sure my little sister had someone to look up to. Meanwhile, I watched classmates worry about prom, weekend plans, and typical teenage experiences-things I often felt too drained to enjoy. It was hard not to wonder if I was missing out on something, if all the energy I poured into meeting expectations would leave me with nothing left for myself. But Rodrigo's lyric also reminds me of something important: the best parts of me aren't gone. They aren't being taken away; they're being shaped by my struggles, molded by my experiences, and strengthened by every challenge l've faced. The patience I've learned while navigating difficult situations, the ability to adapt when things don't go as planned, the resilience that keeps me going when I feel like I have nothing left-these aren't losses. They are proof that even when I feel like l've given everything, I am still growing. Adolescence has been exhausting, yes, but it has also given me purpose. It has taught me that I am stronger than I think, that I am capable of carrying both my own dreams and those of the people who raised me. Every late night spent studying, every moment spent advocating for my family, every sacrifice I've made-they aren't things that have drained me. They are the very things that have prepared me for my future. So while there are times when I feel like l've already given too much, I know that what I have left is more than enough. I still have dreams to chase, goals to reach, and a future waiting for me. The best parts of me aren't behind me-they are still unfolding.
      First-Gen Flourishing Scholarship
The day my mother was diagnosed with cancer, everything in my life changed. This moment was a turning point, not just for my family but for me as well. As the oldest daughter of immigrant parents, I found myself stepping into a role I hadn’t anticipated. Suddenly, I was a caregiver, a translator, and a bridge between two worlds, balancing my academic aspirations with the emotional and physical demands of supporting my family. Through this experience, I learned that resilience isn’t just about pushing through obstacles—it’s about transforming them into opportunities for growth. Managing schoolwork, extracurriculars, and my family’s needs was challenging, but it taught me essential life skills. I became better at time management, learned to prioritize, and developed a deep sense of empathy. These challenges not only shaped my character but also solidified my passion for law and justice. I began to see education as a powerful tool—not only for personal achievement but as a means to advocate for others facing barriers like those I’ve encountered. As a first-generation college student, I’ve faced financial and academic barriers that many students like me experience. Without college-educated mentors, I often felt uncertain about the path ahead. However, these obstacles have only fueled my desire to help others who are in similar situations. Through my leadership as a student ambassador, I’ve worked with non-English speaking families, guiding them through school processes and providing support in ways that reflect my own experiences. These roles have reinforced my belief that education can empower individuals to create change in their communities. I plan to use my education in law, with a focus on immigration, to work for policy reform and provide legal support to immigrant families. I want to ensure that people like my parents, who came to this country seeking better opportunities, are not left behind because of language barriers or legal obstacles. My interest in psychology will help me understand the human aspects of these challenges, allowing me to offer a compassionate approach to justice. This scholarship will allow me to continue pursuing my goals and remove financial barriers that may otherwise stand in my way. By supporting my education, you will help me become an advocate who empowers others and creates positive change within my community. I am determined to use the education I receive to make a meaningful impact, and with your support, I will be able to turn that determination into action.

My mom became a mother at just 16, and her story of resilience and strength has shaped the person I am today. She was a teenage mom with limited resources and few opportunities, yet she built a life full of love and determination for our family. Her sacrifices taught me that perseverance isn’t just about pushing through challenges—it’s about transforming them into opportunities for growth. When my mom had me, she didn’t have the means to pursue higher education for herself. Instead, she made the difficult decision to come to another country to give my siblings and me a better future. As a single mom, she balanced the weight of raising her children with the struggles of adapting to a new life in an unfamiliar place. She worked long hours in physically demanding jobs, often sacrificing her own needs and dreams to provide for us. Seeing her juggle these challenges with unwavering determination taught me the meaning of selflessness and grit. As the middle child, I stepped into the role of the oldest sibling, helping my mom shoulder the weight of our family’s responsibilities. I became a caregiver, a translator, and a source of support for her and my younger siblings. My mom’s journey as a teenage mom and immigrant shaped my understanding of resilience and gave me the strength to face my challenges. Balancing academics, caregiving responsibilities, and extracurriculars was not always easy, but it prepared me for the demands of life and taught me the importance of empathy and perseverance. Her sacrifices also shaped my outlook on education. While my mom didn’t have the opportunity to attend college, she instilled in me the belief that education is the key to breaking cycles and creating change. I carry her dream with me, knowing that every step I take in my educational journey is not just for myself but for her legacy. I aspire to become an immigration lawyer, advocating for families like mine who face barriers to opportunity. My mom’s story showed me the importance of having someone in your corner, and I hope to use my education to fight for justice and equality. This scholarship would ease the financial burden on my family and allow me to fully dedicate myself to my studies. My mom’s strength as a teenage, immigrant mother reminds me that adversity can be the foundation for change. With your support, I hope to honor her sacrifices and create a future where families like ours can thrive without barriers.
