Jaki Nelson LGBTQ+ Music Education Scholarship
I have always been in love with music. I was 4 the first time I picked up a microphone, though it was just a karaoke mic. I belted the lyrics to Teardrops on My Guitar by Taylor Swift and got a standing ovation from my family. Since then, I have been focusing more on music, especially the different types. Whether it be Contemporary Chrisitan or Rap, I am always searching and listening to new music. Music is a big part of my life, I may not be a part of the music industry yet, but it's been one of my biggest dreams that I've never given up on. I write music constantly trying to find my sound and what genre I fit into. Music helps me feel like I fit in with the people around me. My whole friend group is full of people from the LGBTQ+, including me. I feel like, with music, I actually belong in this world. Without music, I wouldn't be where I am in my life today. With my music I can communicate with people more easily about life. To other people, when they read my lyrics, they are relatable in some aspects. I write about love, heartbreak, and dicsorvery. When I write, I feel whole in the sense of "Hey, this song might actually be something people can relate to." I also feel comfortable in my own skin. Music and songwriting helps me find joy in this life it also heals my heart after heartbreak or time of need. WIthout it, there is a possibility I am not even be here. Thank you for taking the time to read my entry. Makenzie Mevis
Bold Moments No-Essay Scholarship
I am a part of Daniel Boone High School's Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps that represents the United States Marines. Personally, I am much more of an insider and I like to keep to myself. With this program I am able to do things like this and go out and represent the Corps and my school. I earn community service hours and I get the chance to help out around my community while having fun with it. Where this may not be something "bold" to everybody, this is a bold thing for me to do. This is my bold moment.
