The change I wish to see in the world is a transformation in the way people view compassion—not as a reaction to tragedy, but as a way of living. In a world where so many are quick to judge, dismiss, or separate themselves from the struggles of others, I dream of a society rooted in understanding, where people slow down long enough to listen, uplift, and truly see one another. My vision is to replace indifference with empathy, so that kindness is not an occasional act, but an everyday responsibility.
This vision was born from personal experience. Growing up as the child of a parent with ALS, I witnessed firsthand the loneliness that illness can create—not only for the one suffering but for the family members who carry the invisible weight of caregiving. My parent’s condition taught me that true compassion isn’t about feeling sorry for someone; it’s about standing beside them when life becomes unbearable and still seeing their dignity and worth. Those lessons shaped how I move through the world today. I’ve learned that kindness costs nothing but can change everything.
Too often, people measure success by wealth, fame, or achievement. I measure it by impact—how much light one can bring to dark spaces. Through my studies in psychology and biblical studies, I hope to become a voice for emotional and spiritual healing. I want to use my education to help people rediscover hope when they feel forgotten, to help communities heal from trauma, and to encourage people to care for one another in meaningful, lasting ways.
But compassion must go beyond words—it has to move into action. The world is filled with division, violence, and misunderstanding, yet I believe we can rebuild it one heart at a time. It starts with education, community connection, and creating safe spaces where people can share their stories without fear of judgment. I hope to open community centers that focus on mental wellness, family support, and faith-based mentorship—places where people can receive both practical help and spiritual encouragement.
This dream is not just about changing others; it’s about being the change myself. Every act of service, every encouraging word, and every small step toward understanding brings us closer to the world I want to see. I carry that mission into my daily life—whether it’s helping a classmate, volunteering, or simply being someone others can talk to when they’re struggling.
The change I wish to see is a world that values compassion as deeply as it values progress. A world where we build bridges instead of walls, where helping others is seen as strength, not sacrifice. My goal is to live in a way that inspires others to do the same—to create ripples of kindness that grow into waves of transformation.
Because at the end of the day, the world doesn’t change because of what we say—it changes because of how we love, serve, and show up for one another.

What makes me unique is my ability to turn pain into purpose. My life has been a constant journey of resilience, faith, and determination. As a first-generation college student and a mother, I’ve learned that strength is not measured by how much you can carry, but by how many times you get back up and keep going—especially when others are depending on you to lead the way.
My motivation for pursuing higher education comes from my deep desire to break generational barriers and build a legacy of knowledge, healing, and empowerment. I am currently pursuing a degree in psychology with a minor in biblical studies because I believe that understanding the human mind and spirit is key to creating change. I want to help others heal emotionally and spiritually, especially those who feel unseen or misunderstood.
My proudest accomplishment has been balancing my academic success—earning consistent A’s—with raising my son and still finding ways to serve my community. Through my organization, A Different Call LLC, I am working to create a foundation that supports transitional housing for men, women, and families re-entering society after hardship. This mission is not just about providing shelter—it’s about restoring hope and reminding people that their past does not define their potential.
What distinguishes me from other applicants is my unwavering commitment to growth and service. Every challenge I’ve faced has strengthened my compassion, sharpened my focus, and deepened my belief that education is not only for personal advancement, but for community transformation. I see higher education as my training ground to become the change agent my community needs.
Receiving this scholarship would not only lighten my financial burden—it would be an investment in someone who intends to give back tenfold. My journey is not about competition; it’s about contribution. I am building a life that says, “It’s possible,” and through this opportunity, I will continue to inspire others to do the same.
Growing up, I witnessed my family navigate a country and a system they didn’t fully understand. They worked long hours, often juggling multiple jobs, just to create a life that allowed me to dream beyond survival. Yet, because education was not something they were able to pursue in the same way, I often found myself alone in trying to understand how to apply for college, how to find financial aid, or even how to study effectively. Every milestone—whether completing an assignment, passing a class, or being accepted into college—felt like an act of resistance against the odds.
Being a first-generation student also taught me resilience. I learned early that perseverance can take the place of privilege, and faith can bridge gaps where resources fall short. At times, I struggled with imposter syndrome, feeling like I didn’t belong in spaces where others seemed to have generations of guidance and support. But those moments have also become my fuel. I realized that being an outsider allows me to see education differently—not as something that is owed to me, but as something sacred that I am building a foundation upon for those who come after me.

Entering higher education as an outsider to the system brings a mix of hope, uncertainty, and determination. As a first-generation student with roots in an immigrant family, my educational journey has never been just about personal success—it has been about breaking barriers that once felt unshakable. My experience has been shaped by the tension between two worlds: one rooted in my family’s sacrifices and traditions, and the other built on the opportunities education can unlock.

My background as the child of immigrants has deeply shaped my future goals. I want to use my education to create pathways for others like me—to help students and families who feel lost in the process of pursuing higher learning. Whether through counseling, community outreach, or advocacy, I hope to bridge the gap between those who dream of opportunity and those who hold the keys to it. My journey has taught me that success means more when it is shared, and knowledge means more when it is used to lift others up.
Ultimately, entering higher education as an outsider has not been a disadvantage—it has been a lesson in faith, strength, and purpose. I carry my family’s sacrifices with me as both a reminder and a promise: to keep moving forward, to learn with gratitude, and to use my education as a light for others finding their way through the dark.
I am no longer just the outsider peeking through the window of opportunity—I am walking boldly through the door, holding it open for those behind me. My story is proof that faith, persistence, and courage can turn obstacles into steppingstones. Higher education, for me, is not the end goal; it is the launchpad for transformation. I carry the hopes of my ancestors and the dreams of my family in every step I take. And as I continue forward, I am determined to turn every barrier I faced into a bridge that others can cross with confidence, purpose, and pride.

From the moment I realized that real change doesn’t begin in the crowd but within the heart of one determined person, I made a promise to be that person. My passion for helping others find healing, direction, and purpose has become the foundation of everything I do. Whether through outreach, mentoring youth, or speaking life into those who feel forgotten, I have dedicated myself to being a vessel of restoration and empowerment.
Currently, I’m making an impact in my community by encouraging personal growth, emotional awareness, and faith-based strength through open conversations, writing, and community engagement. I strive to create safe spaces where people can share their stories without fear of judgment—because I believe that understanding begins where compassion is planted.
After college, with my degree in Psychology and Biblical Studies, I plan to expand that mission on a broader scale. I intend to open community resource centers that merge mental health education with spiritual support, helping individuals and families break cycles of trauma, rebuild confidence, and rediscover their value. My ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between mind and spirit—to help people heal not only through counseling but also through connection, love, and truth.
In everything I do, I want my legacy to echo one message: healing is possible, purpose is real, and one person’s light can illuminate an entire community.
In the end, my vision goes far beyond personal achievement—it’s about transforming pain into purpose and turning lessons into legacies. I believe that every person I reach, every heart I help heal, and every mind I inspire will create a ripple effect that extends far beyond my lifetime. My education is simply the vessel; my mission is the movement. With faith as my foundation and compassion as my guide, I will continue to serve, uplift, and build bridges where walls once stood. Because making the world a better place doesn’t start with having everything—it starts with giving everything you have to make a difference.
At A Different Call LLC, our vision is not just words on paper—it’s a mission in motion. We are dedicated to transforming lives by restoring hope, rebuilding foundations, and reigniting purpose within our communities. Our work reaches beyond temporary solutions to create lasting change for men and women rebuilding after incarceration, homelessness, or hardship.
We believe that everyone deserves a second chance, and through structured support, mentorship, and faith-based guidance, we help individuals answer their “different call”—the call to rise, to rebuild, and to live with purpose. Our vision in action is simple yet profound: to turn broken beginnings into powerful comebacks and to empower every person we serve to not only survive but to thrive.

I Can and I Will Scholarship

Ethan To Scholarship
From a young age, I learned that strength is often born out of struggle. Life taught me early on how deeply the human mind can be wounded—but also how powerful it can be when given the right support, understanding, and care. My decision to pursue a career in psychology with a focus on mental health is not just an academic choice; it is a calling that grew from personal experiences, resilience, and a passion to help others heal, rise, and find peace within themselves.
I chose this path because I have seen how untreated trauma and emotional pain can destroy potential, families, and futures. I’ve also seen how compassion, guidance, and genuine listening can restore hope. Mental health is the heartbeat of every human experience—it affects how we think, love, work, and live. I want to be part of the change that breaks the stigma, opens conversations, and brings light to places people are too afraid to go.
My Future Goals
Twelve months from now and beyond, I envision myself advancing in my psychology studies, gaining deeper insight into the complexities of the mind, and applying that knowledge to real lives. My ultimate goal is to become a licensed therapist and open a center that combines faith, psychology, and holistic healing—where people can find restoration not just mentally, but spiritually and emotionally as well. I want to mentor youth, support families, and build programs that encourage emotional wellness in underserved communities. My mission is to remind people that broken does not mean beaten; healing is possible, and hope is real.
My Experience in the Mental Health Field
My experience has been both personal and professional. I’ve worked closely with individuals who have faced anxiety, depression, and trauma, offering emotional support, resources, and motivation. My background in psychology has equipped me with a foundation in human behavior, coping mechanisms, and crisis intervention. Beyond academics, I’ve volunteered in community programs that address mental health awareness, and I’ve walked beside friends and family members during their most difficult moments—learning that presence, empathy, and understanding can be just as powerful as any prescription.
Every step of this journey has shown me that mental health work requires heart, humility, and strength. It’s about being a voice for the silent, a light for the lost, and a reminder that no storm lasts forever. This is more than a career to me—it’s my purpose, my passion, and the path I was created to walk. 🌿✨
