In my ninth grade English honors class, I had a teacher who deeply influenced me and changed the way I approach my life. Her name is Ms. Porchea. She affectionately called me “Bubbles” because of my bubbly energy that as she said, no one could burst. At a certain in my ninth grade year that energy felt fragile. My family was going through a big change. My mom had to take custody of my younger cousin who was still an infant. Balancing this with my first year of high school was overwhelming and I was struggling to keep up. Before ninth grade, I had been used to waking up at 8am to go to my school just around the corner which started at 9:30 in the morning. Suddenly I had to adjust to a new school twenty minutes away that started at 7:45am. This meant my mornings began at 5:30, giving me just enough time to shower, brush my teeth, cook and eat breakfast, and take a walk to stay active. After school I had practice and managing duties and by the time I got home around eight I still had hours of homework to complete. Writing this now, I can still feel the tears I cried then and the weight of my responsibilities pressing down on me. I wanted to help my mom with my baby cousin and take stress off her but I ended up putting all that pressure on myself. It was hard, exhausting, and at times I didn’t know if I could manage it all. Ms. Porchea noticed a change in my energy. I wasn’t as active in class discussions and even casual conversations felt strained. One day she finally asked me if everything was okay. That simple question broke me and I burst into tears as she consoled me. I told her everything I was going through. From the long days, the responsibilities and the worry. She listened, shared her own stories, and reminded me that this was a time when time management mattered more than ever. Her words didn’t just comfort me, they gave me a strategy. From that day, I started doing my homework earlier, requesting study time from my coaches, and planning my schedule more efficiently. By the time I got home, most of my assignments were nearly done or completed, which made life so much more manageable. I was able to keep up with my academics and responsibilities without feeling completely overwhelmed. Even now, as a senior I still think about that conversation with Ms. Porchea. She taught me that it’s okay to ask for help, to organize your time, and to be honest about your struggles. That lesson has stayed with me and continues to shape how I approach school, work, and life. I will forever be grateful for her guidance and the way she saw me when I couldn’t fully see myself. Thank you for considering me for this opportunity.
Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
Jack Terry’s life story inspires me because it proves that even the greatest loss does not have to end a person’s future. After losing his entire family in the Holocaust and surviving three Nazi concentration camps, he arrived in the United States alone at fifteen years old with little education and no English. Instead of giving up, he chose perseverance, eventually becoming a geological engineer, a medical doctor, a psychoanalyst, and a dedicated servant to others. His strength and determination motivate me to push forward despite my own challenges. One major adversity I have faced is growing up in a large family with limited financial resources. I am one of six sisters, and my parents work hard to support all of us while managing bills, school costs, and my siblings sports like basketball, softball, and track. Knowing that my education places additional pressure on my family has been difficult but it has taught me responsibility and appreciation for every opportunity I receive. Because of this challenge, I learned how to manage my time, work hard, and stay focused on my goals. I balance school, extracurricular activities, and work because I understand that success requires effort and sacrifice. Instead of letting financial stress discourage me I use it as motivation to do well academically and build a better future for myself and my family. I have learned resilience, discipline, and the importance of never taking support for granted. Jack Terry’s journey is deeply connected to these important lessons. Even though our experiences are different, his life shows how adversity can foster strength, purpose, and compassion. In spite of facing unimaginable challenges he served in the United States Army, achieved professional success, and later dedicated his life to teaching students and spreading hope. His story serves as a reminder that success is not just about personal accomplishments but also about giving back. I intend to use my studies to give back to society by building a career that creates opportunities for others and supports my community. Through education, I want to help promote stability, mentorship, and encouragement for young people facing hardship. Like Jack Terry I hope to turn challenges into purpose and use my education to make a meaningful and lasting impact. I believe education is a responsibility, not just a privilege and I am committed to honoring it through service, leadership, and perseverance while uplifting families, students, and communities who need support, guidance, and hope for stronger futures built on compassion, resilience, opportunity and purpose together forward.

Growing up in a household with five sisters has played a major role in shaping who I am today. Being part of a large family has taught me responsibility, patience, and the importance of working hard, even when things are not easy. In my home, everyone’s needs matter, and sacrifices are often made to make sure we are all supported. Watching my parents manage our household has motivated me to take my education seriously and work toward a future where I can support myself and eventually give back to my family. My parents do their best to provide for all six of us, but funding college while also paying bills and supporting my siblings activities can be overwhelming. My sisters are involved in basketball, softball, and track, and those programs are important because they help them stay focused, active, and motivated. I understand that paying for my education adds additional pressure to my parents and that awareness has pushed me to seek opportunities that can help ease that burden. I want to succeed not only for myself but also so my parents can continue supporting my sisters without having to choose between necessities and opportunities. I am a hardworking and determined student who balances school, work, and extracurricular activities. I work part time, participate in sports and take on leadership roles. I do all the above because I believe staying involved helps me grow as a person and they have. Throughout my times these experiences have taught me time management, teamwork, and discipline. These skills that will help me succeed in college and in my future career. They also helped me receive my job as I'm currently saving for school while only working little hours to have time for everything else. I am committed to continuing my education because I see it as the foundation for long term stability and success. This success pushes me to work harder for myself and my family. Receiving this opportunity would make a meaningful difference in my life. It would allow me to focus more on my studies without constantly worrying about finances, while also reducing the stress on my parents. This support would help ensure that my sisters can continue participating in the activities they love and that my family can maintain stability. Knowing that someone believes in my potential would also motivate me to work even harder and make the most of every opportunity I am given.

The year after COVID, my little sister’s middle school announced that they couldn’t fund prom. The school didn’t have enough money and students were going to miss out on one of the most memorable experiences of their middle school years. I knew this was something I wanted to help fix. My mom, other parents and I decided to take action. We organized a prom from scratch using donations, ticket sales, and even contributions from the county, with some money coming directly out of our pockets. It was a huge challenge. From finding a venue to coordinating decorations, planning food and more. But seeing the students enjoy the night and celebrate together made all the effort worth it. That experience taught me that one person or a group of people can positively impact their community when they are committed, organized, and willing to work hard. Playing soccer in 9th and 10th grade has also shaped my passion for contributing to my community. Being on a team has taught me so many skills that you can use for outside the Sport. It has taught me teamwork to communication, and perseverance. I learned how to work with others toward a shared goal, encourage teammates and overcome challenges we faced together. These skills translate directly within the community projects, where planning, cooperation, and leadership are essential for success. Sports showed me that contributing to a team or a group can create meaningful, lasting results and it strengthened my confidence in my ability to help others achieve their goals. Basketball has been another important part of my journey. Through out my high school years I have only played in 10th grade and served as the team manager in 9th grade. Managing the team meant organizing equipment, assisting coaches, and supporting players, often behind the scenes. This taught me that leadership isn’t just about being in the spotlight. It’s about helping others succeed and keeping everything running smoothly. Through this role I realized that small contributions can make a big difference in creating positive experiences for everyone involved. These extracurricular experiences have taught me the value of leadership, dedication, and service. I am passionate about contributing to my community, whether through sports, mentorship, or organizing events because I can see the difference it makes in people’s lives. Moving forward I hope to continue using these skills to help others, create opportunities, and positively impact my community.

Ever since I started working at Chick-fil-A i’ve noticed how much waste restaurants can create from excess packaging to uneaten food. At first it didn’t seem like a big deal, but over time I realized that even small choices like how food is prepared or stored can have a big impact on the environment. This made me think about the responsibility that businesses have not only to their customers but also to the community and the planet. Seeing this for myself has sparked my interest in learning how business practices and sustainability can work together to create a positive impact. Sustainability should be a priority in business because the choices companies make affect both people and the environment. Businesses use energy, water and materials every day and if these resources are not managed responsibly it can lead to long term environmental damage. Beyond protecting natural resources, sustainable practices can also benefit businesses by reducing costs, improving efficiency, and building trust with customers who care about the planet. I have seen how teamwork, organization, and problem solving skills can improve business operations and I believe these same skills can be applied to making businesses more sustainable. In the future, I hope to use my education in business to build organizations that focus on efficiency and sustainability at the same time. For example, I want to develop systems that reduce waste, create energy efficient processes and find ways to recycle or reuse materials wherever possible. I also want to ensure that these practices help the community by providing fair opportunities for employees and making products or services more environmentally friendly for customers. By combining smart business management with sustainable practices. I hope to show that companies can succeed financially while also caring for the planet. Working in leadership roles like being a basketball manager and peer leader, has taught me the importance of planning, responsibility and teamwork. These lessons translate directly into running a business that prioritizes sustainability because it takes cooperation, strategy, and dedication to make meaningful change. I want to continue learning, applying my skills, and creating solutions that reduce environmental impact while still serving the needs of the community. Sustainability is not just a goal for the future. It is something that can start now through the choices we make every day. My experience, education and dedication to responsible business practices will guide me in building organizations that are both successful and environmentally conscious, leaving a lasting positive impact.
