Option 1: Relationships & Impact
Describe a meaningful relationship in your life that has shaped who you are today. How has that relationship influenced the way you build connections with others?
One of the most meaningful relationships in my life has been my friendship with a girl named Jennifer. We have known each other since the third grade, and over the years she became one of the most important people in my life. What started as a childhood friendship built on shared classes, conversations, and inside jokes eventually grew into a deep bond based on trust, support, and understanding. About a year ago, our friendship naturally developed into something more romantic, but the years we spent as best friends before that are what truly shaped me and influenced the way I build relationships with others today.
Growing up together allowed us to see each other through many different stages of life. We supported each other during stressful school years, family challenges, and moments of self-doubt. Because we had known each other for so long, there was always a sense of comfort and honesty between us. Jennifer became someone I could talk to about anything without fear of being judged. Having that kind of trust in a friendship taught me the importance of communication, loyalty, and being emotionally present for the people you care about.
When our relationship became romantic, I realized how much our strong friendship had already built the foundation for a healthy connection. We already knew how to listen to each other, respect boundaries, and work through disagreements calmly because we had spent years learning how to support one another as friends first. The transition taught me that meaningful relationships are not only based on attraction, but also on genuine friendship, patience, and mutual respect. It showed me the value of building connections slowly and authentically instead of rushing them.
This relationship has also influenced the way I interact with others in my everyday life. Through my friendship with Jennifer, I learned how important it is to make people feel heard and valued. She has always been someone who listens carefully and encourages me during difficult moments, and because of that, I try to offer the same support to others. Whether I am helping classmates, working with teammates, or spending time with family and friends, I have learned that strong relationships come from consistency, honesty, and effort.
Another important lesson this relationship taught me is the importance of growth. Since we have known each other for so many years, we have both changed a lot as people. We learned how to support each other’s goals, respect each other’s individuality, and encourage each other to become better versions of ourselves. Seeing our friendship grow into something deeper reminded me that some of the strongest relationships are the ones built over time through trust and shared experiences.
My relationship with Jennifer has shaped me in many positive ways. It taught me how to communicate better, trust others more deeply, and value emotional connection in all relationships. Most importantly, it showed me that meaningful connections are built through kindness, patience, and genuine care for another person. The bond we created over the years continues to influence the way I approach friendships, teamwork, and relationships with the people around me, and it has helped me become a more understanding and compassionate person.
Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
Leadership, to me, is not about being the loudest person in the room or having authority over others. A true leader is someone who encourages people, takes initiative, and helps others succeed. Throughout high school, I developed these qualities through my involvement in a STEM cybersecurity club, where I learned the importance of teamwork, communication, and patience.
When I first joined the club, I was nervous because many students already had experience with coding and technology. Instead of letting that discourage me, I used it as motivation to improve my skills. Over time, I became one of the most dependable members by attending meetings regularly, participating in competitions, and helping newer members understand concepts I had once struggled with myself. This taught me that leadership is not just about personal success, but also about helping others grow.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was patience. Sometimes it was frustrating helping students who could not quickly grasp cybersecurity concepts like coding basics or network security. I would explain ideas several times and still see confusion. However, those experiences taught me how important it is to stay calm and adapt the way I teach. I learned that everyone learns differently, and being a leader means encouraging others rather than making them feel discouraged. By breaking concepts into smaller steps and taking the time to listen, I became a more understanding mentor and teammate.
One experience that truly showed my leadership skills happened during a regional cybersecurity competition between several schools. Our team had to identify weaknesses in a simulated computer system, but many members became overwhelmed by the pressure. Instead of panicking, I helped organize the group by assigning tasks based on each person’s strengths and encouraging everyone to stay focused. Although we did not win, we worked together effectively and finished much stronger as a team. That experience taught me that leadership is about remaining calm and supportive during difficult situations.
In addition to competitions, I also helped organize workshops for students interested in cybersecurity but with little experience. I enjoyed helping younger students build confidence and realize that STEM is something they can succeed in with hard work and support. Seeing them become more engaged reminded me that leaders can inspire others simply by being patient and willing to help.
What makes me a leader is my willingness to encourage others, stay committed to my goals, and lead by example. My experiences in cybersecurity have shown me that strong leaders are not only skilled, but also compassionate and dependable. As I continue my education, I hope to keep mentoring others and using my knowledge to create opportunities for future students interested in STEM and cybersecurity.
Forever90 Scholarship
Service has always meant more to me than just simply helping someone when it is convenient. To me, it means being dependable, compassionate, and willing to use my experiences to make life better or a little easier for someone else. Growing up, I learned early that service often begins in small ways, helping family members, supporting classmates, volunteering in the community, or simply listening to someone who feels unheard. Those moments taught me that even small acts of kindness can leave a lasting impact. They also shaped the person I am today and inspired me to pursue a future where I can make a difference on a larger scale.
One of the biggest influences on my understanding of service has been my family. Watching my mother work hard and sacrifice so much for me showed me what it means to put others before yourself. Even when life was difficult, she continued to provide support, encouragement, and love. Her determination inspired me to approach challenges with resilience and to help others whenever I can. Because of her example, I have always tried to be someone people can rely on, whether that means assisting classmates with schoolwork, encouraging friends during difficult times, or volunteering in my community.
Another important part of my life has been the church community I grew up in with my grandmother. Ever since I was young, attending church with her taught me the value of kindness, humility, and serving others without expecting anything in return. One experience that stood out to me was helping prepare and distribute Thanksgiving food baskets to families in the community. I remember spending hours with other church members organizing canned goods, packing boxes, and delivering meals to families who were struggling financially. Seeing how grateful people were, even for something as simple as a warm meal and support during the holidays, made me realize how meaningful service can be. Being surrounded by people who were always willing to uplift and encourage one another showed me how powerful a supportive community can be, and those experiences strengthened my desire to continue helping others throughout my life.
My passion for STEM and cybersecurity is also connected to my desire to serve others. Technology plays a major role in everyday life, and as our world becomes more connected, protecting people’s information and safety becomes increasingly important. I want to use my education to help individuals, businesses, and communities stay safe from cyber threats. Cybersecurity is not only about computers, it is about protecting people’s privacy, financial security, and personal information. By pursuing a career in this field, I hope to make technology safer and more accessible for everyone.
In the future, I plan to use my education to mentor younger students, especially those who may not see themselves represented in STEM careers. I want to encourage others to believe in their abilities and show them that success is possible regardless of their background or obstacles. I also hope to continue serving my community through outreach programs, technology education, and volunteer work. My goal is not only to build a successful career for myself, but also to use my knowledge and experiences to uplift others.
Ultimately, I embody a life of service by striving to lead with empathy, perseverance, and a genuine desire to help people. My education will give me the tools to create positive change, and I am committed to using those tools to serve my community and inspire others for years to come.
Harry B. Anderson Scholarship
Growing up in Belle Glade has played a major role in shaping who I am and the goals I have for my future. Coming from a small town has taught me the importance of perseverance, hard work, and giving back to the people around me. I was raised by a hardworking mother who made many sacrifices to provide opportunities for me, and seeing her determination motivated me to strive for success in my own life. Because of my experiences, I have developed a strong passion for helping others and creating positive change within my community. I believe education is one of the most powerful tools a person can have, and I want to use mine to make a lasting impact.
I am passionate about pursuing STEM because technology continues to shape the world around us, and I want to be part of that progress. My planned field of study is Cybersecurity because I am interested in how technology works and how important it is to protect information in today’s digital world. Every day, individuals, businesses, schools, and hospitals rely on technology to store important information, communicate, and complete everyday tasks. However, cyber threats such as hacking, scams, and identity theft continue to increase. I want to learn the skills necessary to help protect people and organizations from these dangers while also helping others better understand internet safety and digital responsibility.
One of the main reasons I want to pursue Cybersecurity is because I have seen how limited resources and technology education can be in smaller communities like Belle Glade. Many people are not fully aware of how to protect themselves online, which makes them vulnerable to cybercrime. In the future, I hope to use my degree to educate members of my community about online safety, help local businesses improve their cybersecurity systems, and mentor younger students who may be interested in technology careers. I want to create opportunities for students who may not have access to expensive technology programs or resources but still have the talent and potential to succeed.
For example, there is a young boy at Rosenwald Elementary School who has developed a strong interest in computers and technology. He is curious, intelligent, and eager to learn, but his family cannot afford the devices, coding programs, or camps that could help him build his skills further. Seeing students like him motivates me even more to pursue a career in STEM. I want to create mentorship programs and workshops where students from communities like mine can explore technology and cybersecurity without financial barriers standing in their way. I know there are many students with great potential who simply need someone to encourage and support them.
Before learning about Harry Anderson, I was not familiar with who he was or the impact he had during his lifetime. However, after learning about his story, I became inspired by the way he used his education and talents in many different ways throughout his life. Despite attending a small one-room schoolhouse, Harry worked to earn a degree in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and used his knowledge to contribute to his community. What inspires me most is that he did not limit himself to only one path. He explored the world, became involved in agriculture, helped educate others, and continued learning throughout his life. His story showed me that a STEM education can open doors not only for personal success but also for helping and inspiring others. Like Harry Anderson, I hope to use my education to positively impact my community while continuing to grow, learn, and create opportunities for future generations.

“Some of the strongest people are created by the struggles they were never supposed to survive.”
Growing up in a household led by a teenage mother shaped the person I am today and completely changed the way I view responsibility, sacrifice, and success. My mother was only nineteen years old when she had me, yet she made the difficult decision to put her own education and dreams on hold so she could work and provide for me. She dropped out of college and endured a difficult living situation with her mentally abusive mother because she wanted to make sure I had stability and support. Watching her struggle while still finding the strength to care for me taught me what resilience truly looks like. Her sacrifices became the foundation of my motivation and the reason I refuse to give up on my goals.
At the same time, growing up without my father present in my life deeply affected me. Although he was absent from my childhood, I saw him support his other children, especially because I attended the same school as one of my siblings. Watching him show up for award ceremonies, graduations, and important moments in their lives was painful because it reminded me of what I lacked. There were moments when I questioned why I did not receive the same attention or support. However, instead of allowing that pain to define me negatively, it became motivation for me to work harder and create a different future for myself. I learned that I cannot control the actions of others, but I can control the person I choose to become.
My upbringing taught me the importance of perseverance and self determination. I understand what it feels like to grow up facing emotional challenges and financial hardships, and because of that, I value every opportunity I receive. Rather than using my circumstances as excuses, I use them as reminders of why I must succeed. I want to prove to myself and to my mother that every sacrifice she made was worth it. Her strength inspired me to become someone who can overcome obstacles and create opportunities not only for myself, but also for future generations of my family.
One of the biggest goals I have for my future is becoming a cybersecurity analyst. During high school, I discovered a strong interest in cybersecurity through various courses, and I became fascinated with the idea of protecting people and organizations from cyber threats. In a world that relies heavily on technology, cybersecurity is more important than ever, and I want to contribute to making the digital world safer. This career represents more than financial stability to me, it represents a chance to build a life my mother never had the opportunity to experience. I want to provide her with comfort and peace after everything she sacrificed for me.
I plan to use everything I have been through to build a new legacy centered on success, resilience, and opportunity. I want my future family to grow up with the support, stability, and encouragement that I sometimes lacked. I also want to inspire others who come from difficult backgrounds by showing them that their circumstances do not have to determine their future. My upbringing may have been challenging, but it gave me the strength, motivation, and determination to create a better path forward. Through education, hard work, and perseverance, I hope to honor my mother’s sacrifices and build a legacy that changes the future of my family for generations to come.
GD Sandeford Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in Belle Glade has shaped the person I am today and inspired many of my future goals. Living in a small town has allowed me to see both the strengths and challenges within my community. One thing I have noticed is that many people, especially older adults and small business owners, are not always aware of how dangerous online scams, hacking, and identity theft can be. Technology is becoming a part of almost every aspect of life, from banking and education to healthcare and communication. Because of this, I want to earn a degree in Cybersecurity so I can use my knowledge to protect and educate others in my community.
Cybersecurity is important because people rely heavily on technology every day, yet many do not know how to properly protect their personal information. Scammers and hackers often target people who may not fully understand online safety. With a degree in Cybersecurity, I would like to teach members of my community how to recognize phishing emails, create secure passwords, protect their devices, and avoid online fraud. Even small actions can make a big difference in preventing cybercrime. I believe that educating people about internet safety can help protect families from financial loss and emotional stress caused by scams and stolen information.
I also want to help local schools, businesses, and organizations strengthen their cybersecurity systems. Many small businesses in towns like Belle Glade do not have the resources to hire large technology teams, which can make them more vulnerable to cyberattacks. I hope to work with local organizations to improve their digital security and help them safely store important information. Schools also store sensitive student data, so protecting educational systems is extremely important. By helping local schools improve their cybersecurity practices, I can help create a safer learning environment for students and staff.
Another way I plan to use my degree is by mentoring younger students who may be interested in technology careers. For example, there is a young boy at Rosenwald Elementary School who has a strong interest in computers and technology, but his family cannot afford expensive devices, coding programs, or technology camps that could help him grow his skills. Students in small towns often have talent and potential, but they may not always have access to the same opportunities and resources as students in larger cities. I would like to create programs, workshops, or mentorship opportunities where students like him can learn about cybersecurity and technology for free. Helping students discover their abilities at a young age could inspire them to pursue successful careers and create a brighter future for themselves and their families.
Earning a Cybersecurity degree would not only allow me to build a successful career, but it would also give me the opportunity to give back to the community that helped raise me. My goal is to use my education to make Belle Glade safer, more informed, and better prepared for the growing use of technology in everyday life. I want people in my community to feel confident using technology without constantly worrying about cyber threats. Through education, service, and leadership, I hope to make a positive impact and inspire others to create change within our community as well.

Reflecting on my journey as a STEM student, I see that I haven't faced many big challenges yet, but I know there are some tough times coming. As a Black woman in a professional program, I expect to deal with some unique difficulties that could affect my studies and career. The combination of being a woman and being Black in STEM can create barriers that are hard to deal with, but I'm determined to push through them.
One of the biggest challenges I see coming is the cost of higher education. Since I come from a single-parent household, my mom has worked really hard to support me, but we don't have much money, so resources are limited. The expenses for admission tests, study materials, and application fees can add up quickly and put extra pressure on our tight budget. Each test has registration fees, and getting ready for these tests needs good study resources, which can be really expensive. This financial stress might make it hard for me to focus on my studies and could limit my chances to grow.
Receiving a scholarship would help reduce some of these money worries and let me focus on my school and career goals without always stressing about paying for the things I need. With this help, I could buy study materials, go to prep courses, and pay for applications to programs that fit my career plans. This financial support would not only lighten my load but also give me the chance to take opportunities that could improve my learning and professional growth.
I believe my future success isn't just for me; it's for my community too. I really want to support other young women of color who want to get into STEM fields. Once I'm established in my career, I plan to create mentorship programs to guide and help students who face similar challenges. By sharing my experiences and providing resources, I hope to encourage others to chase their dreams, no matter their background or financial situation. I also want to work with local organizations to offer scholarships and workshops focused on STEM education, helping those who might not have the same opportunities I've had.
I want to do more than just succeed for myself; I want to help my field too. I aim to be a role model and support diversity in STEM, working to break down the barriers that keep underrepresented groups from doing well in these areas. By getting involved in community outreach and education programs, I hope to create a space where everyone, no matter their background, feels encouraged to follow their interests in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship
Making a positive impact on the world is something that many people aspire to do, but not everyone is able to. I have two specific areas where I want to focus my efforts: supporting individuals from single-parent households and advocating for mental health awareness and resources. My personal experiences have shaped these goals, and I believe that by addressing these issues, I can help others who may be facing similar challenges.
My experience with having an absent father has helped me understand the challenges that people from single-parent households face. Growing up, I saw my dad being there for his other kids while I felt left out because I had a different mom. I also noticed how hard it was for my single mother, who had to give up a lot when she had me at just 19. She had to drop out of college and get a part-time job to take care of me. This has made me want to help others who might feel alone or unsupported in similar situations. I plan to create programs and support groups where people from single-parent households can come together. These groups would focus on sharing stories, building a community, and providing resources for personal growth. By connecting people who have similar experiences, I hope to create a sense of belonging and support that can help reduce feelings of loneliness and abandonment.
I want to make a positive impact on mental health. My own struggles, made worse by my dad not being around and getting hurt in sports, have driven me to support mental health awareness. I know how important it is to have good ways to cope and how mental health affects overall well-being. To help with this, I plan to create programs that teach about mental health and provide resources. This could include workshops, seminars, and outreach efforts that inform people about mental health, give tools for handling stress, and encourage open talks about mental health issues. I believe that by making conversations about mental health normal, we can reduce the stigma that often comes with it, making it easier for people to get help and support.
In my plan to make a positive impact, I know that working together with others is really important. Teaming up with local groups, schools, and mental health experts will help us create programs and resources that really work. By joining forces, we can reach more people and offer better support to those who need it. I see us building a support network that helps not just single-parent households and mental health issues, but also encourages people to take control of their lives and futures.
My plan to make a positive impact focuses on helping people from single-parent households and raising awareness about mental health. My own experiences have helped me understand these issues, and I want to create programs and resources that can help those who are having a hard time. By building a community, promoting mental health education, and working with others, I believe I can help make the world a more supportive and inclusive place.
Julia Elizabeth Legacy Scholarship
As a 17-year-old black woman who graduated high school early after skipping a grade, I’ve had the chance to reflect on the importance of diverse representation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers. Diversity in these fields is crucial not just for the individuals involved but for society as a whole. When we talk about representation, we mean having people from different backgrounds, races, and experiences contributing to these industries. This diversity leads to innovation, creativity, and solutions that can benefit everyone.
Diverse representation in STEM careers means having people from different backgrounds working together. This is important because they bring different ideas and ways to solve problems. For example, many tech improvements come from understanding what different communities need. If only a few types of people are on the teams creating technology, they might miss the needs of others, leading to products that don't work for everyone. When we include more voices in these discussions, we can develop better solutions that serve a larger group of people.
Additionally, representation is important for inspiration and role models. Since you're planning to major in Computer Science with a focus on cybersecurity, you probably understand how seeing people who look like you succeed in these fields can really matter. There are only about 3% of cybersecurity professionals who are black women, which shows there's a big gap in representation. When minority students see others like them doing well in STEM, it motivates them to follow similar paths. It helps them realize they can achieve great things, no matter what stereotypes or challenges they face. This kind of representation can also get more young people interested in STEM careers they might not have thought about before.
On the other hand, not having enough representation can hurt minorities. When there aren't enough role models, it can make people feel alone and unsure of their abilities. Many young people might think that STEM careers aren't for them or that they won't belong. This can stop talented individuals from following their dreams and reduce the number of skilled people in these important fields. It's sad to think about how many great minds could be lost just because they don't see people like them in the industry.
Also, having fewer minorities in STEM can keep problems going. When the people making decisions in these fields aren't diverse, they might accidentally create rules or products that don't think about everyone's needs. This can cause a situation where some groups keep getting pushed aside, and their voices aren't heard. It's really important to break this cycle by encouraging diversity and inclusion in STEM.
Having diverse representation in STEM careers is really important for new ideas, inspiration, and fairness. It brings different viewpoints that help create better solutions, encourages young people from all backgrounds to chase their dreams, and helps break down barriers. As a young black woman who has gone through high school and plans to go into cybersecurity, I get how important it is to see diversity in fields that shape our world. We need to push for more inclusive environments in STEM so that everyone, no matter their background, can contribute and succeed. By doing this, we not only help individuals but also improve society as a whole.

If given the opportunity, I would focus on improving gun violence among youth in my city, Belle Glade, Florida. Gun violence has become a significant issue, particularly related to gang activity, and it has led to the tragic loss of many young lives. This issue resonates deeply with me, especially after losing a former classmate who was only 15 years old. His death was a heartbreaking reminder of the urgent need for change in our community.
To tackle this issue, I would create a complete program focused on teaching and involving young people. The first step would involve creating awareness about the dangers of gun violence and the impact it has on individuals and families. This could be done through workshops in schools, community centers, and local organizations. By educating young people about the consequences of their actions, I hope to instill a sense of responsibility and encourage them to make better choices.
In addition to education, I would work to establish mentorship programs that connect at-risk youth with positive role models. These mentors could be community leaders, teachers, or even older students who have successfully navigated similar challenges. By giving advice and support, we can help young people feel better about themselves and learn skills that encourage them to make positive choices instead of turning to violence.
Furthermore, I believe that creating safe spaces for youth to engage in recreational activities is crucial. I would advocate for the development of community centers that offer sports, arts, and various programs to keep young people occupied in positive ways. These centers could serve as safe havens where youth can come together, build friendships, and participate in constructive activities instead of being drawn into gangs or violent behavior.
Collaboration with local law enforcement is also essential in addressing gun violence. I would encourage community policing initiatives that foster trust and communication between police officers and residents. By building relationships, we can create a safer environment where young people feel comfortable reporting crimes or seeking help when needed. This partnership can help reduce gang influence and promote a sense of security within the community.
Improving gun violence in Belle Glade is important to me because I believe that every young person deserves a chance to thrive without the fear of violence. The loss of my classmate is a painful reminder of what can happen when we do not take action. There are also two more teenagers that I know of who have died because of being in one of the gangs in my community. It’s extremely sad to think that these kids will never get to experience things like graduating high school or getting married. By working to create a safer community, we can honor his memory and the memories of others who have been affected by gun violence.
Ultimately, my goal is to create a culture of peace and resilience in Belle Glade. I want to inspire young people to believe in themselves and their potential, encouraging them to choose paths that lead to success rather than violence. By investing in our youth and providing them with the tools they need to succeed, we can build a brighter future for our community. It is crucial to take action now, as every life lost to gun violence is a tragedy that affects us all. Together, we can work towards a safer, more supportive environment for the next generation.
