NomineeBio
My preferred name is Kenny Barth (they/he/she). I have a strong passion for art and design work. I am looking into graphic design and hope to continue to do what I love by being creative and using my imagination.
I studied Liberal Arts at Kirkwood Community College and am currently a University of Northern Iowa transfer student. I plan to study Graphic Design and Art at UNI to continue to do what I love, art.
By studying Graphic Design I can go into a freelance artist and graphic designer job or work for a company helping with advertising or events and more. There are so many different job opportunities for graphic designers.
To me, art is a way to bring creative ideas into the world and since everyone has different views, art is always unique. I'm excited to explore everything available within this career path.

I love being outdoors and always love looking for challenges and new experiences. This world is so unique; I love exploring it and helping others enjoy it too. Sometimes you just have to jump in and try something new.
Overall I am a very quiet person, but behind that, I am always fighting for different things. I am an advocate for climate change, LGBTQIA communities, mental health, and human rights. I think it's very important that we are all equal and be able to live life with freedom and peace. Especially in these challenging times, we are facing, I believe we all should stick together to continue to fight for what we believe in, which for most is equality and acceptance.

To start off with a little about me, I am a nonbinary artist. Art is my number one hobby that has created the formation of my choices in life, more specifically painting, but I love experimenting with multiple different art styles. I am going to school for graphic design so that I can learn more about digital design and help create more art and life within society. My first time drawing since I was little was in college, I really didn’t think I was going to do well, but I learned a lot in that class that helped me expand my knowledge. I’ve been painting since I was little, but classes have been able to lead me to a deeper level.
Starting with my favorite and most special art piece from my Drawing I class that helped me become more confident within myself has to be Charcoal Still-Life. I was able to experiment with a drawing technique I didn’t know existed, but now I found it is my favorite medium to work with. In Painting I my most special piece would be Still-Life Shapes as I learned the basics of drawing and painting all in one as well as got to work with colors professionally for the first time. Finally, in my digital design class, my most meaningful piece would be Alice Neal, which was presented in the Kirkwood Art Show, which was put on by my college in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This piece was one of the hardest pieces I did as we used tape and an X-acto knife to create a human face and portray their style through our work. I really put a lot of time and effort into this piece and really enjoyed the challenge.
My art has led me to be able to participate in the Kirkwood Art Show twice already which is a special honor and a really exciting opportunity for Kirkwood students. Being able to participate in college courses I was able to receive feedback from my peers and improve my work in the meantime for the next assignment. It created more opportunities as well for me.
After college, I am hoping to gain a career in graphic design to practice what I’ve learned and create designs to help my community spread the awareness of their social events and organizations. I will be able to communicate with my clients to best help our society grow with the idea of improving human rights, climate change, and more.

I have found that art hobbies, including painting, drawing, digital design and more, have been pushing me more and more into the art field which is useful to my community in various ways. I am able to create a more beautiful world with more colors, shapes and styles, while spreading awareness that is most likely needed as our world starts to decrease into more hateful ways of life.
With my graphic design education I hope to spread information to inform the community on various ideas including climate change, the LGBTQIA+ community, mental health, disabilities, women's rights, human rights overall and more that can help make the world better and more equal for everyone. With this ability to create more online media I feel as though it will help create a platform to spread awareness to topics in need so we can learn more about what needs to be taught. In schools we really aren’t taught much within these topics and it’s our own job to look deeper into them and research them on our own time, which creates a purpose for our media usage. These days media is a huge form of communication for younger generations so graphic design through an online platform is super important in today's world in time.
I am also able to communicate with my community to provide them with online designs to help them spread awareness for any organizations or events they are trying to share. I can work with different clients as well, including people in tech, education, marketing, and more. Depending on the designs created there can be certain paths for the company to help them expand and grow, including creating pictures for advertisements, publications, websites, brand identities, packaging, signage, and more depending on what the company is looking for. Looking at these options we can see that the work of graphic designers is seen everywhere whether you think about it or not, but the thoughts and efforts put into them are just so inspiring to me and you can truly see the hard work put into each design.
I loved learning about this career path and it was so intriguing to me which is why I started on this path myself through hard work and education. I fully intend to learn everything there is to know about graphic and digital design so that one day I can spread awareness to my society and hopefully make a difference in the world through my career choice.
Elijah's Helping Hand Scholarship Award
Personally, all three experiences have affected my life in various ways, but my LGBTQIA+ experiences have shaped my life tremendously ever since I learned what the community was about. I was always on a path of finding myself from the time I was little, as I knew I was different since I didn’t relate to my gender identity. I never knew there were other options until the 4th grade. Nothing was clear until then, and I never knew how to tell the people in my life until I was old enough to move out; if that was ever the reaction I got. I’m still on a path of finding myself to this day, but I identify with nonbinary the best as well as lesbian or queer as my sexual orientation.
With these identities, my mother always tried to get me to explain myself to prove I was these things, even though I didn’t owe her any explanation and it was her just trying to prove I was looking for attention. I’ve never really gotten much support from my mother, until recently as she has tried her best. My other family members were very supportive especially my dads side as we have had gay members introduced before. My mothers side are the ones who are more confused and angry with me. I feel less welcome and feel as though they tried kicking me out of my religion even though it wasn’t their choice. They keep telling me I was no longer a part of the family, while also telling me they loved me and would be there for me, but only if I promise to go back to “normal”.
My religion was another story as I slowly stopped going to church as the messages became more and more about relationships and how marriage should stay between man and woman and how there were only two genders. They supported my name change, but didn’t fully support me in my decisions with my pronoun change and identity switch.
Within my school I found a lot of support as many friends were helping me through these feelings and experiences. I had safe places, including LGBTQ+ clubs and safe hangout spots to go if ever in need.
All these different areas of my life being exposed to this little detail in my life shows how the world is affected and how I reacted to it all. With the help I’ve gained and the challenges I’ve faced have helped me through this time. I have been able to find my community and just let myself live to my full potential no matter what. I’ve found that life is short and time is precious so why waste it being someone you aren’t?
Alexis Potts Passion Project Scholarship
My passion is painting, and I don't know how I would have come up with a career choice in the arts and design program if I never found this love of art. I am a very artistic person. I love experimenting and creating new ideas through all different kinds of art mediums.
I am really excited to go into Graphic Design and help people explore the arts. I want to go into advertising and freelance different events. I want people to see my designs and truly know or feel something about the event or scene they are looking at.
Through my education I am continuing to learn the objectives of graphic design and what it really means to be one. I am experimenting with digital online art platforms and more to see how I can create different designs to improve my skills. I am currently learning the basics of color matching and emotions that can be brough through a piece. I am learning different drawing, painting and digital techniques to truly add feeling and importance to pieces. Through the rest of my years of my education I can't wait to learn as much as possible to make my dream come true.

My experience has never been the ideal reaction I thought I would get from my family. Each side is like the world trying to split me into two. My mother side constantly tells me I am no longer apart of their family unless I continue to go by she/her and go back to my normal uncorrupted self. My dads side loves me and told me that they will always be there whether they understand it or not.
To tell the truth I love being who I am today. I love going by Kenny, which is not my birth name. I love they/them, but he/him and she/her are okay too. Somedays people tell me I should go back in time and never come out, but where would that get me? I'd be back hating my life and not wanting to continue. I can't think of a time where I felt completely normal. I've always been apart of the LGBTQIA community whether I knew it or not and I've been like this since I can remember.
I want to bring who I am into my career, I love being creative and artistic as well as standing up for what people believe in. I am currently majoring in Liberal Arts to continue my general education, but in Fall of 2023 I will be continuing my study into Graphic Arts where I can learn so many design concepts to eventually help people like me. I can create logos, posters and events designs to help LGBTQIA people fight for rights and show the world that acceptance in the first step. I want to go into advertising and designing different things to somehow bring us all together.
I know it wont be an overnight project and I have a lot more research I need to do to figure out just how exactly I can help different platforms, but I am not stopping my education or my work, until something has been done or until I help people make some kind of progress. I will continue to fight for this world to become and better and more safer place to live, even if it takes years. I know it won't be in my lifetime even though I hope it would be, I want to inspire people to create more designs with me and follow into my footsteps to show people who we are and what we should be. Which is accepted and free.
Greg Lockwood Scholarship
There are many events that are constantly changing in our world today. Growing up I always felt different, like I wasn't assigned the right gender and I grew up thinking I had to like boys, but that wasn't the case. It was very hard to hide that I was different, but I couldn't ask anyone or explain to anyone because it wasn't seen around me at the time. I eventually learn that I do have a home and a community in this world, and I will forever celebrate that.
My family had a hard time when I came out. My mother tried to deny that I was the way I was, and both my mother and my dad felt like they failed as parents. Which just isn't the case. They taught me so much and even though this world is changing and growing back to its past ways, I want to see normalization and acceptance for people who are different to this stereotypical life style everyone has created. Sometimes people just need to understand that the life they grew up with isn't always how its going to be. We are taking away peoples rights instead of accepting people for who they are.
Many bills and laws are being overturned and relooked at. For example in 2022, Row vs. Wade. This is a significant problem in society and with this being overturned, what else will they look into and decide to reverse. Many women, people of color and LGBTQIA individuals as a whole are protesting for their rights back. How long do people need to realize that this is how the world is, and we should start loving it instead of hating each other and ruin lives of multiple people just based on a religious outlook. As many people continue to bring politics and religion together, I fear the people will no longer be able to have these simple human rights granted to them, and the world will slowly fall out of place and back into its old ways. The fighting and the protesting will never stop until we are all equal and free, so why not start looking into ways to help our community instead of tearing it apart.

I've been painting for as long as I can remember and growing up I learned more with photography and graphic art. It's always been a passion of mine to go into a career path where I can create art. I see myself being a freelance artist focusing on graphic design to help inform people of different events and ideas.
With photography I started as a motion photographer and was inspired by Christopher Martin, who was a reason I became so obsessed with creating motion photography. I continued to study it and create photos where movement tells a story.
I started painting abstract pieces to hide a story and let people find their own story in the piece, which is my favorite type of paintings. Being able to relate to an artist's work is an interesting feature of a painting that I just love.
Graphic art I work with events to raise awareness and inform people about certain things going on in the world today.
All my pieces have meaning and it's just excited to create and see others reactions. Everyone has a different outlook on every artistic piece they create or view and that creates a dream or vision of both artists and viewers. My life experiences with art have made me who I am and made me excited to study different types of art.
Devin Chase Vancil Art and Music Scholarship
Starting art I never thought I'd go this far, but it's truly become the hobby that has made me the happiest I've ever been. As a kid, I remember always asking my mother if I could sit at the table and finger paint. I would sit with my cousin and we'd paint for hours. We were always very creative and imaginative.
When it was time to look into different careers for my future I never knew what to do. I was told art can't be made into a career and I would have to go into something that will actually help me financially. I went back and forth between job shadows of speech therapists, teachers and anything that would let me work with children as I wanted to teach and help them with their future. I volunteered in different careers, but nothing truly clicked with me. I kept trying to figure out what I can do for a possible job, but I was always brought back to some type of artistic career choice. Finally, I chose to go into graphic design and went with it.
I am here to prove my family wrong, art is a career path and a very important one. In society art shows a true meaning of different ideas through different lives. Everyone's art is different and it brings uniqueness into our world. It is everywhere and has purpose for advertising, designing, and even construction. Most jobs have some type of art relation to it, which is really interesting to view.
Having a career in art can help other people see that passions really can be apart of your future and it doesn't have to mean your not financially stable. It shows that bringing passions into your work can improve and help different places and people who may need it. With graphic design I create art pieces to get people's attention on a certain company or event that is around.
Art is something that has always been and will always be in my life. I've also always been really interested in working with people and helping them. I'm really excited to be studying a career path that follows my passion in photography, painting and digital art as well as letting me help others with art. I can't wait to see where this takes me as I continue this path and create art to share with people all around me.
