My life goals are centered around becoming a private chef and owning my own house with some land. Beyond cooking, I'm deeply passionate about understanding the impact of what people consume, both good and bad, and I enjoy engaging in open conversations about hot-button political issues. I believe I am a strong candidate because I understand firsthand what it means to face immense sorrow and adversity – from experiencing eviction and being struck by a truck just days before, to moving to college injured and traveling to NYC weekly for health reasons. Despite these challenges, I've consistently pushed through and maintained a 3.9 GPA, demonstrating my resilience and determination.

The Unintended Go-Around: After the Bike Accident Takeaway
The world moved unfocused, not in the exhilarating blur of a downhill ride, but instead in the queasy lurch of the unfocused impact. I see it like a reel spinning at full speed - there is the flicker of my bike tires humming along the asphalt and, in the next instant, I was laying on my sweat and destruction of my front tire. My bike accident was not just a collision, it was a choppy stop of my way of life and the start of an adventure that would shift my paradigm for resilience and self-care.
On August 9, 2024, roughly 2:30-3:00 PM, while riding my bike on N. 5th Street in Hudson, NY, a 2008 Ford pickup truck struck me in the middle of the road as it was turning onto the street. There was no time to react, and I can still hear the crunch of the metal, feel the sharp pain of impaction and sudden silence. The driver, after the impact, helped me, picked up my bike, and brought me to my place of work, the clubhouse. Despite calling 911, there was no ambulance. Also, I was pretty dazed from the impact and riding on adrenaline, and got to the hospital, around 8-9 PM. To my surprise, the accident report indicated that I was at fault and over $1,000 in damages on the truck, allegedly.
The assessments at the hospital at first seemed to indicate I did not have anything serious going on, but the diagnostic imaging which came later revealed everything that had happened. It was clinically suggested that my ongoing neck, back and knee pain were as a direct result of being hit by the vehicle. My right knee sustained a small, although acute, tear of the lateral meniscus with the fluid build up from the trauma. The lumbar spine X-rays demonstrated slight retrolisthesis of L5 on S1 which could have indicated only the slight change came as a result of impact (on top of mild lumbar levoscoliosis). The cervical X-rays were clean, but the whiplash effect could not be ruled out on the cervical spine as soft tissue injuries do not always show up on X-ray. Nevertheless, I am continuing to experience pain and functional limitations as a result of my injuries. No surgery is required, but since I was assessed in mid-September, I have been in an ongoing scheduling of physical therapy and regular chiropractor appointments as I continue to try to cope with the pain and stiffness I am dealing with.
In addition to acute physical healing, this experience instilled a sense of unexpected innate strength and resilience. It taught me the deep value of listening to my body and being mindful of movement. It took an accident to put complacency into perspective and offer some new understanding of gratitude for a community of support. Furthermore, it showed me a new level of mental conditioning—the ability to tolerate some discomfort, remain hopeful, and rebuild. This detour in my life, while disappointing, also set me in motion toward an elevated level of self-awareness and perpetual resilience, with a more conscious set of priorities around self-care, including ideas of social and spiritual overall well being.

My culinary journey started pretty organically, rooted in the creative freedom of an afterschool program in 3rd grade, where After School Farm Director Indigo Ocean developed a love for experiential play. I remember fondly making a bunch of little quark cheesecakes! It was a small and simple creation, but profound to me nonetheless. This initial spark of interest grew into a flame when I started attending "Kids Can Cook" camp in 4th grade. Panic camping became more serious over the summer, and I kept coming back year after year, eventually going from camper to camp counselor and sharing what I had learned with those younger than myself. I'll say it was even more interesting experience as a baker's assistant where I learned about the craftsmanship and process of constructing great treats. Everything I did was just laying the groundwork for what I would like to be my life goal: becoming a private chef, and creating culinary experiences for others. I hope to live a life of pursuing my passion, while owning my own home with some land! Ideally a place where I could grow ingredients and get more in tune with the things I am working with.
This passion flows deep into the aspect of cooking on its own, the passion lies in understanding what people consume and why it matters what it does negatively or positively for their well-being. I am invigorated by learning about the complexity of food, health, and life, and because of that I am stimulated to ongoing learning and inquiry into the processes connecting food, health; also people. So much of who I am comes from the ability to meet and connect with others around food and conversation.
I am a strong candidate not only for my interests and abilities, but also for the resilience that I have developed while being faced with struggles of great magnitude. I intimately understand what it feels like to be shrouded in grief; to feel the suffocating experience of being evicted just three days before I was struck by a truck. The physical and emotional burden that I experienced in that accident combined with having the immediate challenge of moving to college just a week after my injury were a lot to deal with. Even when I was traveling weekly to NYC for medical reasons, I did not let these circumstances hold me hostage in my academic journey. I learned how to push back against obstacles; to found motivation in my sadness and show that motivation in my education; and returned to maintaining a GPA of 3.9.These experiences haven't broken me; they have created an extraordinary reserve of empathy, resilience, and an absolute commitment to my goals. They illustrate to me what it means to put one foot in front of the other regardless of the obstacles in your way and a worldview that I hope will serve me in every endeavor that I pursue.
