Growing up, I experienced a long-term identity crisis I constantly battled. Perceptions of who I wanted to be vs. who I should be vs. who I didn't want to be traced around my mind persistently. I knew I wanted to be something other than a product of the environment where I grew up. I knew who I should be, which, in more nominal terms, was who my mom wanted me to be. But I needed help finding out who I wanted to be. I went through many different social stages of life by trying other friend groups and moving to different neighborhoods because of financial issues. Most failed because I felt I needed to be accepted or act like/ have the same goals as most. But, all in all, when I got to my university, I realized I was trying to please an invisible standard, and I never asked myself who I was. So, allow me to introduce myself. I am Kennedy Shorter, a first-year sophomore from Houston, Texas, majoring in Political Science with a minor in Graphic Design. I am currently a part of the honors college at North Carolina A&T State University and a new Alpha Lambda Delta Scholar, and I now have a 3.8 GPA. I will not let my start define me; I will be the definition of my finish.

The journey to higher education has been a challenging and transformative experience for me, marked by resilience, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to my dreams. Growing up in a low-income household, I faced numerous obstacles that threatened to derail my aspirations. However, these challenges only fueled my determination to succeed and shaped the person I am today. From a young age, I understood the value of education as a pathway to a better future. My hardworking parents struggled to provide for our family, often working multiple jobs to make ends meet. Despite their best efforts, financial instability was a constant reality. I remember the nights when my parents had to choose between paying bills and buying groceries and when I had to wear hand-me-down clothes to school. These experiences instilled a sense of responsibility and a drive to excel academically. In elementary school, I quickly realized that if I wanted to achieve my dreams, I would need to take control of my education. I immersed myself in my studies, often staying late to finish homework and reading extra materials to deepen my understanding. My efforts paid off, as I consistently earned top grades and received recognition for my academic achievements. However, my family's financial constraints meant additional educational resources, such as tutoring or extracurricular activities, needed to be within reach. The high school presented new challenges and opportunities for growth. Determined to make the most of my education, I took part-time jobs to support myself and contribute to my family's finances. Balancing work and school was difficult, but it taught me valuable lessons in time management and perseverance. Despite the long hours and exhaustion, I remained committed to my studies and continued to excel academically. During high school, I discovered my passion for science and mathematics. These subjects fascinated me and provided a sense of clarity and purpose. I joined the school's science club and quickly became active, participating in competitions and collaborating with like-minded peers. My enthusiasm for science led me to pursue leadership roles, and I eventually became the club president. In this role, I organized events, mentored younger students, and fostered a collaborative and supportive environment. These experiences deepened my love for science and honed my leadership and organizational skills. As I delved deeper into my studies, I became increasingly aware of our planet's pressing environmental issues. The more I learned about climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, the more I felt compelled to take action. My passion for science merged with a growing sense of responsibility to protect the environment, leading me to pursue a degree in Environmental Science. Choosing this field of study was a pivotal moment in my journey. I was driven by a desire to develop innovative solutions to combat environmental challenges and promote sustainability. I envisioned myself working with organizations dedicated to environmental protection, contributing to developing and implementing sustainable practices and policies. This vision became my guiding light, motivating me to overcome any obstacles. Overcoming Financial Barriers and Achieving Academic Success Applying for higher education brought new challenges, particularly regarding financial barriers. My family's limited resources meant that paying for college seemed impossible. However, I refused to let this deter me. I diligently researched scholarships and grants, spending countless hours writing essays and filling out applications. My hard work paid off, as I was awarded several scholarships that allowed me to pursue my degree. In college, I continued to excel academically, driven by my passion for environmental science and my determination to make a difference. I took advantage of every opportunity to deepen my knowledge and gain practical experience. Internships, research projects, and volunteer work allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom to real-world situations. These experiences reinforced my commitment to environmental sustainability and prepared me for a career dedicated to protecting our planet. Upon graduation, I aim to work with organizations focused on environmental protection and sustainability. I aspire to influence public policy, advocating for comprehensive ecological regulations and adopting sustainable technologies. I aim to drive meaningful change and contribute to a more sustainable future by promoting collaboration between governments, corporations, and communities. In my field, I seek to develop innovative solutions to address environmental challenges, such as reducing carbon emissions, conserving natural resources, and protecting biodiversity. I am particularly interested in exploring the potential of renewable energy sources and sustainable agricultural practices. By leveraging my education and practical experience, I hope to contribute to the advancement of environmental science and inspire others to take action. On a personal level, I am committed to continuous growth and development. I recognize the importance of staying updated on my field's latest research and advancements, and I am dedicated to lifelong learning. I plan to actively participate in workshops, conferences, and professional organizations to expand my knowledge and network with other environmental advocates. I am also determined to develop my leadership and advocacy skills. I plan to focus on public speaking, project management, and community engagement, as they are essential for driving change and inspiring others. By becoming a more effective leader and advocate, I aim to amplify my impact and contribute to a global movement for environmental sustainability. The journey to higher education has been challenging, but it has also been gratifying. Overcoming financial and other obstacles has taught me the value of resilience, perseverance, and hard work. My passion for environmental science and my commitment to sustainability drives me to achieve my goals and positively impact the world. As I pursue this scholarship, I am grateful for the opportunities that have brought me to this point and excited for the future. Travel holds the potential to be a profoundly transformative experience, offering unique opportunities for personal growth and development. Exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and environments can fundamentally change an individual's outlook, fostering a deeper understanding of the world and promoting significant personal development. As I aspire to embark on my educational journey, travel can play an essential role in shaping my character and broadening my horizons. One of the most impactful aspects of travel is the exposure to diverse cultures. Experiencing different customs, traditions, and social norms broadens one's horizons and challenges ethnocentric views. Cultural sensitivity, a crucial trait in our interconnected world, is heightened through such exposure. Travelers enhance their adaptability and learning capabilities by engaging with new artistic practices and languages. This experience nurtures cognitive flexibility and problem-solving skills, valuable assets in any academic or professional setting. Travel can also significantly shift one's perspective. Encountering new ways of thinking and living challenges preconceived notions and biases, leading to a more nuanced understanding of the world. Stepping out of one's usual environment often prompts introspection, allowing travelers to reflect on their lives, values, and beliefs. This self-reflection can lead to profound personal insights and growth, shaping individuals into more empathetic and compassionate global citizens. A change in environment is another critical factor in the transformative power of travel. Navigating new surroundings requires flexibility and adaptability, helping individuals build resilience and confidence. Exposure to different artistic and aesthetic expressions can further enhance creative thinking. Additionally, escaping routine and experiencing new places can reduce stress and rejuvenate the mind, improving mental health and well-being. Travel offers numerous opportunities for interpersonal development. Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds enhances communication and social skills, teaching patience, active listening, and effective interpersonal interaction. Participating in group travel or community-based activities abroad can improve teamwork and collaborative skills, which are essential for success in both academic and professional pursuits. The journey of travel is also one of self-discovery. Exposure to new interests and hobbies can help individuals identify passions they might not have encountered otherwise. Successfully navigating travel challenges, such as language barriers or logistical issues, boosts self-confidence and achievement. Witnessing different ways of life can inspire travelers to reassess their goals and priorities, potentially leading to life-changing decisions and more focused pursuits. Finally, travel cultivates global awareness. Witnessing global issues such as poverty, environmental degradation, and social injustices firsthand deepens understanding and motivates action. Travelers often become more aware of the environmental impact of their actions, developing a more significant commitment to sustainable practices. Some travelers advocate for causes they encounter, using their voices to raise awareness and drive change. In conclusion, travel is more than just visiting new places; it is a journey of self-discovery, learning, and growth. By exposing individuals to diverse cultures, perspectives, and environments, travel encourages a more inclusive and connected world. Pursuing this scholarship, I am committed to leveraging the transformative power of travel to broaden my horizons, enrich my educational experience, and contribute positively to society.

In my journey to address critical social issues, gun violence stands at the forefront of my advocacy. This issue became profoundly personal during my sophomore year of high school when my best friend, an exceptional student-athlete, lost his life to senseless gun violence. This tragedy ignited a passion to seek justice and promote change, leading to my first significant act of advocacy: organizing a nonviolent walkout to honor his memory and demand recognition from our school administration. This experience taught me the importance of standing firm in my beliefs, controlling emotions, and acting with integrity. Since then, I have dedicated myself to combating gun violence and its pervasive impact on communities, particularly those underserved and marginalized. I have focused on raising awareness and promoting legislative change through various platforms, including social media, community events, and educational programs. My work has extended to civic engagement, where I have taken on leadership roles to empower my peers and community members to participate actively in the democratic process. One of my notable contributions has been organizing voter registration programs and initiating an early voting poll site at North Carolina A&T State University. Recognizing that political participation is crucial for enacting change, I have worked tirelessly to ensure that my peers are informed, registered, and motivated to vote. As Associate Vice President of Campus Outreach for the UNC Association of Student Governments (UNC ASG), I have leveraged my position to advocate for policies that address gun violence and promote public safety. My involvement in student organizations such as Deep South Aggies and the Political Science Society has also provided me with platforms to further my advocacy. These organizations have allowed me to collaborate with like-minded individuals, share knowledge, and develop strategies to tackle gun violence and other social injustices. My background in digital agriculture research and design internships has also equipped me with the skills to analyze data and develop innovative solutions to complex social issues. Furthermore, my personal experiences with domestic violence have fueled my commitment to supporting and advocating for underserved populations, particularly African American women. This intersection of personal and professional experiences has shaped my holistic approach to addressing gun violence, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support systems and equitable policies. As a rising junior with a cumulative GPA of 3.7, heavily involved in on-campus organizations, financially responsible, and with over 100 community service hours last semester, I am determined to continue my advocacy. My ultimate goal is to become a constitutional attorney, where I can leverage my legal expertise to drive systemic change and ensure justice for all. Through leadership roles, community involvement, and continuous learning, I strive to make a meaningful impact on society and inspire others to join the fight for a safer, more just world.

Red used to be my favorite color as a child. Red meant ladybugs, Skittles, and candy dyes. It was the color of fun and happiness. But as I grew up, red took on a darker meaning. Red became the color of blood, a symbol of violence and pain. Red was coupled with the blue of police sirens, creating a combination of colors and sounds I was systematically instilled to fear. This shift in perception fueled my desire to address the issues plaguing my community and work toward meaningful change. When I have the opportunity, I aim to improve my community through comprehensive policy reform, enhanced educational opportunities, and robust civic engagement initiatives. These efforts are crucial because they address systemic issues perpetuating inequality and limit underserved populations' potential. One of my primary goals would be to advocate for policy reform that promotes equity and justice. This involves working on legislation that addresses police brutality, gun violence, and social injustices. By focusing on these critical areas, I aim to create a safer and more equitable environment for everyone, particularly marginalized communities. Policy reform is essential because it establishes systemic changes that have long-lasting impacts, ensuring that the root causes of inequality are addressed. Improving educational opportunities is another key focus area. I would enhance access to quality education for all students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. This includes advocating for increased funding for schools, creating scholarship programs, and implementing mentorship initiatives. Education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering individuals to reach their full potential. Investing in education can create a more informed and capable community prepared to tackle future challenges. Promoting civic engagement is vital for a thriving community. I would organize voter registration drives, educational workshops, and community forums to encourage active participation in the democratic process. Empowering individuals to have a voice in their community is crucial for creating a responsive and accountable government. Civic engagement fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among community members, leading to a more vibrant and dynamic community. These initiatives are significant to me because of my personal experiences and the values instilled in me by my upbringing. Growing up in a single-parent household, I witnessed the challenges my mother faced and the sacrifices she made to provide for our family. Her resilience and determination inspired me to pursue a career focused on justice and equity. I am committed to using my skills and knowledge to advocate for those often overlooked and create opportunities for others to succeed. Improving my community through policy reform, educational opportunities, and civic engagement is not just a professional aspiration but a personal mission. These efforts are essential for addressing systemic inequalities and creating a more just and equitable society. By working towards these goals, I honor the sacrifices made by my mother and contribute to a future where everyone has the chance to thrive.

This isolation has often exacerbated my anxiety, making it difficult to navigate social situations and build meaningful relationships. Ultimately, I aspire to bridge the gap between political Science and the broader STEM fields, leveraging my background to create a more inclusive and equitable landscape for innovation. I am committed to advocating for policies that foster diversity, ensuring that many voices and perspectives shape the future of STEM. In summary, pursuing a degree in Political Science allows me to contribute meaningfully to scientific, medical, and technological advancements. As a person of color, I bring a unique perspective to the table, advocating for policies that promote diversity and inclusion. By doing so, I want to create an environment where diverse ideas can propel innovation, ultimately leading to a more just and equitable world.

Throughout my life, I've demonstrated leadership in various capacities, driven by a commitment to justice, equity, and community empowerment. My leadership journey began during my sophomore year of high school when my best friend, a star athlete, lost his life to gun violence. This tragic event fueled my determination to take action. I led a high school walkout, a nonviolent protest, to honor his memory and draw attention to the need for recognition from our school administration. The entire sophomore class, athletics teams, and senior class joined the walkout, kneeling on the football field in his name. I took full responsibility for the walkout, resulting in a 10-day in-school suspension, but I learned the importance of standing up for what I believe in and the power of collective action. In college, my leadership expanded to civic engagement and advocacy. As the Associate Vice President of Campus Outreach for the University of North Carolina Association of Student Governments, I have been instrumental in organizing voter registration programs and advocating for student voting rights. One of my proudest achievements was leading a successful petition and advocacy campaign to establish an early voting poll site on my North Carolina A&T State University campus. This effort demonstrated the power of persistence and advocacy in achieving positive change and ensuring that students' voices are heard in the democratic process. My role in student organizations such as Deep South Aggies and the Political Science Society has also allowed me to mentor peers, coordinate events, and create student communities. These experiences have honed my ability to inspire and mobilize others toward common goals. My leadership is also profoundly personal. Growing up in an environment marked by domestic violence, I witnessed firsthand the systemic failures that left my mother unsupported. This fueled my desire to create a shelter that offers holistic support to domestic violence survivors. My vision includes providing financial assistance, emotional and mental health services, physical wellness programs, and legal advocacy to help survivors rebuild their lives. This initiative is rooted in my experiences and driven by a commitment to turning my pain into purpose. In the future, I aim to leverage my leadership skills to reform systems that perpetuate inequality and marginalization. As a future constitutional attorney, I aspire to enhance care, coordination, and communication within communities and legal frameworks. I envision a future where victims receive the support and justice they deserve. Through proactive policy-making, community engagement, and strategic legal advocacy, I will strive to dismantle barriers to justice and empower underserved populations, particularly African American women disproportionately affected by these issues. Ultimately, my goal is to create a more just and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Leadership is about guiding others and using one's skills and experiences to create positive, lasting change. Through my leadership, I inspire others to stand up for their beliefs, advocate for those who cannot, and work tirelessly to improve the world.

I am a first-generation college student at North Carolina A&T State University, majoring in Political Science with a minor in Philosophy. Growing up, I feared the color red. Red used to be my favorite color as a child. My favorite flavor of Skittles was red. My favorite fruit, strawberries, are red. My favorite movie character, Lightning McQueen, is red. But as I got older, I began to hate the color red. Red was no longer a happy symbol of my childhood; it no longer represented ladybugs, apples, or roses. As a child, I experienced firsthand the devastating impacts of domestic violence, which instilled in me a profound sense of empathy and a relentless drive to advocate for justice and equity. My childhood was marked by fear and resilience as I witnessed my mother endure abuse so we could have the necessities of life. This early exposure to violence and injustice shaped my aspirations and fueled my commitment to creating a better world. My experiences have profoundly influenced my goals and the path I have chosen. I am passionate about reforming the legal and social systems that fail to protect and support victims of domestic violence. I aim to become a constitutional attorney specializing in advocacy for underserved populations, particularly African American women disproportionately affected by these issues. By addressing systemic inequalities and advocating for comprehensive support systems, I hope to empower survivors to rebuild their lives and break free from the cycle of abuse. My journey as an advocate began in high school, where I led a nonviolent walkout to honor my best friend, who lost his life to gun violence. This experience taught me the importance of standing up for my beliefs and using my voice to demand change. I carried this lesson to college, where I continue to engage in civic activism and leadership. I am the Associate Vice President of Campus Outreach for the University of North Carolina Association of Student Government. I work to enhance student engagement and advocate for policies that benefit our diverse student body. In addition to my leadership roles, I am actively involved in various student organizations, including Deep South Aggies and the Political Science Society. These platforms have allowed me to initiate voter registration programs, advocate for early voting poll sites on campus, and engage in meaningful dialogues about pressing social issues. My commitment to public service extends beyond campus, as I intern with Students For Voting Justice, where I contribute to initiatives that promote social justice, equity, and voting rights for the youth. One of my most ambitious projects is developing a comprehensive domestic violence shelter that offers holistic support to survivors. Inspired by my mother's struggles and the systemic failures that left her unsupported, this shelter would provide financial, emotional, mental, physical, and legal assistance to help survivors rebuild their lives. By offering resources such as job training, counseling, medical care, and legal advocacy, I aim to create a safe and empowering environment for those affected by domestic violence. Through my academic pursuits, leadership roles, and community engagement, I am dedicated to positively impacting the world by addressing critical social issues. My experiences have shaped my understanding of the world and fueled my determination to create a future where justice and equity prevail. We can build a more compassionate and just society for all by advocating for systemic change and supporting those in need.

Question 1 I plan to begin law school in the fall of 2026 after graduating with a B.A. in Political Science and minors in Philosophy from North Carolina A&T State University, with the help of this scholarship. Growing up on the south side of Houston, I often passed by the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, founded in 1946. I know the ins and outs of the historic building and its exceptional educational foundation. Attending this landmark institution has been my dream and will soon become my reality. Engaging with its community has solidified my determination to complete my J.D. candidacy and practice constitutional law. I aspire to share the same seat that Thurgood Marshall once did, and I am determined to make a similar impact on Houston and Texas. Question 2 At 12, I downloaded Twitter in 2016, a significant year due to Donald J. Trump's election, Alton Sterling's killing by police, and Texas implementing open carry gun laws. These events marked a pivotal year for my awakening as a future activist, politician, and attorney. While some criticize Gen Z for heavy media use, I see it as crucial for learning and intellectual growth. Since a device is almost always in my hand, I use it constructively to gain knowledge. The media has shaped my legal aspirations by keeping me informed on issues like police brutality and gun laws, which are often overlooked in formal education. Seeing unarmed black men killed, children subjected to violence, and school shootings without justice has fueled my ambition to pursue a career in law. The media exposes these injustices and motivates me to fight for change within and outside the judicial system. I have evolved my use of social media from raising awareness to actively pursuing justice. Real-time news and social issues through these platforms have driven my educational and professional development, solidifying my commitment to becoming a constitutional attorney dedicated to justice and equity. Question 3 During my sophomore year of high school, my best friend, a star athlete, lost his life to gun violence after a football game. He wasn't in a gang or a thug; he was an exceptional student and community contributor. I was devastated and angry when our school disregarded his death. Despite my pleas for recognition of his positive contributions, the administration did nothing. In response, I led a nonviolent walkout to honor his name, drawing the administration's attention to our cause. Grieving students joined the walkout, where we knelt and prayed on the football field. When the administration asked who led the walkout, I took full responsibility and received a 10-day in-school suspension. I would do it again without hesitation. This experience taught me the importance of standing up for what I believe in, encapsulated by Malcolm X's quote, "A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything." I learned to navigate such situations with integrity, control my emotions, and address issues professionally. This drive continued as I fought for an early voting poll site on my school's campus, North Carolina A&T. I led a petition and sent a letter to the North Carolina Board of Elections Director, advocating for students' right to keep the early voting poll site on campus. This successful effort demonstrated the power of persistence and advocacy in achieving positive change. Question 4 At 10, I became immune to the smell of bleach, learning that the proper ratio to clean up blood is 1:10 bleach-to-water. Instead of having sleepovers, I knew the terminology of domestic violence in detail. Watching my mother get abused constantly so we could have running water was something no one should endure, but I did. My mother's sacrifices and the systemic failures that left her unsupported fueled my desire to create a shelter for domestic violence survivors. This shelter would offer financial, emotional, mental, physical, and legal support to help survivors rebuild their lives: Financial Assistance: Financial education, job training, and direct financial support. Emotional and Mental Health Services: Counseling, therapy, and support groups. Physical Wellness Programs: Medical care, fitness programs, and nutrition counseling. Legal Advocacy: Assistance with restraining orders, custody battles, and legal advice. This shelter would empower survivors to break free from abuse and build a new future. My journey has shown me the devastating impact of domestic violence and the urgent need for holistic support systems. I am committed to turning my pain into purpose, ensuring that no one else has to endure the hardships my mother and I faced.

"Sit straight, elbows off the table, chin up, smile wide." These were not just rules my mother enforced; they were principles that defined our lives. Growing up in a single-mother household was a journey marked by resilience and pursuing a better life amidst challenges that sometimes seemed impossible. Like her mother and grandmother before her, my mother bore the weight of single parenthood with grace and determination. It was challenging for her to raise me alone, juggle work, bills, and the myriad responsibilities of being the sole provider. Yet, she did so with unwavering strength and a spirit that refused to be broken by life's hardships. As a child, I didn't fully grasp the extent of her sacrifices; all I knew was that she wanted me to succeed and break free from generational struggles. Our relationship could have been smoother. There were moments of tension, of misunderstandings borne from the stress of our circumstances. But through it all, her love was a constant, guiding force. She instilled values of hard work, perseverance, and integrity—qualities that became my compass as I navigated through school and life. As the first in my family to pursue a college education, I carried with me the weight of expectations and hopes not just for myself but for generations past and those yet to come. Moving away from Houston to pursue a double major in Political Science and Philosophy was a leap into the unknown, driven by a deep desire to positively impact the world. My journey has been shaped by the understanding that my education is not just about personal achievement but about breaking barriers and creating opportunities for others. I aspire to use my knowledge and experiences to advocate for social justice and challenge systemic inequalities. Ultimately, my goal is to become a politician and champion policies that promote equality, and to empower individuals to reach their full potential. In conclusion, "Sit straight, elbows off the table, chin up, smile wide" were not just rules imposed upon me; they embodied my journey. These simple directives instilled by my mother have profoundly shaped my outlook on life and guided my path forward. Sitting straight allowed my presence to command respect in rooms where I once felt overlooked or underestimated. Keeping my elbows off the table has taught me gratitude for the opportunities and blessings before me, no matter their size. Holding my chin up reminds me to seize life-changing opportunities, such as this scholarship, with unwavering determination and optimism. Smiling broadly grounds me in deep gratitude for my achievements against the odds. As I continue fueled by my mother's values and my pursuit of education and social change, I am committed to positively impacting the world. I aspire to advocate for justice and equality, voice for the marginalized, and create pathways for others to thrive. My journey is not mine alone; it is a testament to the strength of single-parent families everywhere. With each challenge overcome and milestone achieved, I am reminded of the power of determination and the profound impact of unwavering support and love. In every endeavor, I carry my mother's lessons: resilience in adversity, compassion for others, and the courage to defy expectations. Her sacrifices laid the foundation for my ambitions, and I am determined to honor her legacy by making a meaningful difference in the world. My future is not a solitary pursuit of success but a journey of service and advocacy. Through policy-making, community engagement, or grassroots activism, I am dedicated to leaving a positive mark—a testament to the strength and resilience of single-parent families everywhere.

"..., Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, don't forget there's purple too." "..., Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, don't forget there's purple too." Red used to be my favorite color as a child. My favorite flavor of Skittles was red. My favorite fruit, strawberries, are red. My favorite movie character, Lightning McQueen, is red. But as I got older, I hated the color red. Red was no longer a happy symbol of my childhood; it no longer represented ladybugs, apples, or roses. Red meant blood. Blood. The same blood I had to clean up on the doors to the bathroom in my mom's one-bedroom apartment we lived in with her ex-boyfriend. Every week, there were always blood splatters. At the age of 10 years old, I became immune to bleach. In fact, did you know the proper ratio to clean up blood was 1:10 bleach and water solution? Back then, I was horrible at math, but that was one solution that solved something in my life. At ten, I should've been mischievous about boys, having sleepovers, or rediscovering teen boy bands. But at ten years old, I knew the entire term of domestic violence and rape and could tell you everything about it. Sleepovers were never at my house, and I couldn't experience having "crushes" as a child because boys represented the color red. Watching my mother get abused constantly for me to be able to have running water and take a bath at night was something no one should ever have to experience, but I did. I have never questioned God or anything he has put me through because my childhood experiences with the color red instilled discipline, motivation, and drive in me today to pursue my career. I never want a child, mother, or father to fear the color red. I blame parts of the though unjust justice system that don't provide accurate financial stability for families with hardships. With my education, I aspire to reform the systems that perpetuate inequality and marginalization. By enhancing care, coordination, and communication within communities and legal frameworks, I envision a future where victims receive the support and justice they deserve. I aim to become a family attorney specializing in advocacy for underserved populations, particularly African American women disproportionately affected by these issues. Through proactive policy-making, community engagement, and strategic legal advocacy, I will strive to dismantle barriers to justice and empower survivors to reclaim their narratives. I will ensure equitable access to resources and a culture of consistent empathy and support, I aim to change outcomes for the betterment of individuals and families enduring similar hardships. Because of the difficulties my mother went through and sacrificed, I can proudly say that I no longer fear the color red. My mother inspired me; my mom sacrificed her education so I could attend the number one historically black college and university, and I will not waste that. In my transformation and resilience, the colors of the rainbow—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple—now represent not only the spectrum of life's challenges but also the resilience, hope, and determination that propel me forward. Each hue embodies a chapter in my story of overcoming adversity and embracing a future where no one fears the color red but sees it as a symbol of strength and perseverance. Red. Orange. Yellow. Green. Blue. Purple.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Nelson Mandela. *Deep Sigh* "Ms. Kennedy, you won't be able to become president if you keep thinking like that," My fourth-grade teacher said as she returned my paper grade, marked "D" in bright, bold red. The topic was "Write about a time you stood up for something you believe in," and mini future little activist me wrote about when I stood up for an Indian boy at the bus stop and continued writing about how bad racism is for the world, etc. I was around 9 or 10 then and didn't understand how highlighting something positive could turn so negative. Although, unfortunately, her teaching experience towards me was very negative during my early education, little did she know that she started an unstoppable mindset of me pushing myself to excel in any expectation set upon me by any outside force. Pursuing education and expanding knowledge is so powerful, especially for black people, because with it, we are as strong as we want to be. We aren't supposed to be able to read, write, and know more about our culture. But here I am, a young black woman, writing a scholarship essay funded by a black woman to help me pursue my college education at a historically black university. I'm sure my 4th-grade teacher would hate that, but it only makes me more passionate to do more. Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world," I will do just that. My education will help me to become a lawyer/ politician and, hopefully, the youngest person to serve on the supreme court bench. Although my fourth-grade teacher negatively impacted my career aspirations. My very first professor in college influenced my beliefs. I had a tough time adjusting to college's first semester. Being an out-of-state student, an only child, and having to live entirely on my own so quickly felt like a blur I wasn't ready for. In the second week of school, we had to write an essay detailing our college life so far, and I wrote about my battles with faith and my relationship with God. It may have been too personal, but I was a vulnerable freshman, and I felt I could trust my professor with my thoughts, so I didn't mind. The following week came, and we verbally spoke after class, and she asked if we could pray together. I was shocked initially because that's something educators don't normally do, but I was blessed and thankful that we shared that emotional moment. From then on, she offered transportation for me and some other students to join her church, and we all formally built a spiritual bond throughout the year. Her small gesture repaired my relationship with God and my outlook on educators. If my fourth-grade teacher had taken the time to understand me and expand her outlook on life, we could've had a better relationship. Once I step down and become an educator, I plan to have the opposite perspective on students as my fourth-grade teacher had on me. I want my teaching legacy to resemble endless possibilities and that you (the student) can do whatever you wish if you keep your faith and determination. My impact on my students will last inside and outside the classroom, just like my college professors. Being a teacher not only means just teaching a given curriculum. It's the ability to inspire and ignite interest students may need help to see and have a long-lasting impact on their lives.

77% of white Americans are in Congress. 75% of the U.S. are white people. And there are only 62 current black members. This is a leading reason for the massive disconnect and distrust between the justice system and black people. Once I graduated from my hbcu, North Carolina A&T State University. I plan to find ways to solve that disconnection and build trust. Unfortunately, I noticed this disconnect early in my childhood when I started paying attention to the media and exploitations of police brutality. I was nine years old when Eric Garner was choked to death by NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo while screaming the words "I Can't Breathe," pleading for his life after Pantaleo and his partner suspected Garner was selling sole Cigarettes. Being nine years old at the time, I thought it would be one of those instances where it only occurs every blue moon. Boy, did I not know what I should've prepared myself for years later. Unfortunately, that was only the beginning. In fact, incidents of police brutality skyrocketed by 312% from 2011 to 2012 compared to 2001 to 2002. I saw multiple cases of police brutality weekly, wondering if it would ever stop. Never did I think it would occur to me. May 16, 2018. It was the first day of summer break. I was 14 years old and just completed my first year of High School. So, my friends and I celebrated by going to the neighborhood pool. I'm sure you can guess how that went. Nonetheless, after about an hour of no more than 15 black kids just innocently playing games and having fun, the police are called. Four armed policemen come and swarm the pool in under five minutes. We were forced and drugged out within seconds because we were "disrupting the public and property." I didn't realize "Marco Polo" served as a terrorist threat, but here we are now. We all got kicked out of the pool and questioned for investigation. Mind you, we were all black minors and had no parents around. The police' worst nightmare, I guess. Moreover, we were all taunted and threatened not to come back because we were "disturbing the peace," I'm sure it was more unlawfulness down the line, but we were young and didn't know. The officers questioned us and yelled about how much we would end up like others in jail and be "the product of our environment." The words "product of our environment" followed me from that moment until now. Because what exactly is the product? I'm now 18 years old and use the stereotype as a drive to finish school and further my education. We, black people, are the solution to our environment, not the product. Once I obtain my degree, I plan to strengthen my community by being the politician they can trust, and improve it by influencing others to help build that trust. My legacy will influence black people to partake in political actions and be more involved and take over the justice system. Since they can take over, why can't we? Black people, we're stronger together than apart, and that's been proven numerous times historically. Since our voices aren't being heard, we become the ones who hear our own voices instead of pleading to people who don't care about our lives. I plan to push my community to vote, build trust within the justice system, and educate each other on problems that affect us and how we can change those problems and prevent more problems from happening.
