Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
In the fall of 2018, my dad was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 disorder. What I found out from this experience was the lack of resources for mental health in my community of Cambridge, Maryland. We were lucky to get my dad into the clinic in Dorchester, but they saw over 500 patients. My dad was told the waiting period was over 6 months to get into services. These services are almost impossible to obtain here, even with my family's privilege of private insurance and college education. For me, growing up in a small town with limited access to mental health resources has shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world in profound ways. Without the support of local mental health services, I have had to navigate my struggles with anxiety and depression largely on my own. This experience has made me more resilient and determined to seek out the help I need, even if it means traveling long distances or utilizing online therapy services. The lack of local mental health resources has also affected my relationships with others. When friends or family members are unable to relate to my struggles or offer meaningful support, it can be isolating and frustrating. I have had to work hard to build a support network of understanding and compassionate individuals who can offer me the guidance and encouragement I need to navigate my mental health challenges. In terms of my goals, the lack of local mental health resources has motivated me to help others who are struggling with mental health issues and provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive. My own experiences with mental health have given me a unique perspective and empathy that I believe will make me a more effective and compassionate therapist. Despite the challenges I have faced due to the lack of local mental health resources, I have also gained a deeper understanding of the world and the importance of mental health awareness. I have seen firsthand how stigma and lack of access to care can impact individuals and communities, and I am committed to advocating for better mental health services for all. Overall, my experience with the lack of local mental health resources has profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. It has made me more resilient, empathetic, and determined to make a positive impact on the lives of others who are struggling with mental health issues. I am grateful for the strength and insight I have gained through my journey, and I am excited to continue my work in the mental health field to help others find healing and hope.
