Bio

As a child, I witnessed my father battle Lupus, a debilitating autoimmune disease which resulted in kidney failure and cardivascular disease and later his demise. Growing up, I developed a passion for helping people and wanting to pursue a career as a nurse. Throughout his battles, I witnessed many great healthcare professionals, especially nurses that eased his pain and helped him live a quality life. According to a recent research, only 6.3% of the registered nurses in the United States are Black/African American. I think that this lack of diversity truly affects the Black community, especially those in underserved communities. Being in these communities, many people do not seek medical attention until it is life-threatening. Whereas, if they begin to seek medical attention at the beginning of signs/symptoms it can greatly increase their chances of survival and healing. Having a degree in nursing will provide me with the tools to inform, educate and advocate for people in these communities.

Embracing Community Service My name is Kennedy Elise Burks and I am a senior at Camden Fairview High School in Camden, Arkansas. I am the progeny of parents with strong moral values, a high degree of integrity, and an excellent work ethic. I was raised with a high regard for education, respect for myself, as well as, others, and reverence for God. I am a responsible, intelligent young lady that has always been independent, and not easily influenced by others’ thoughts or opinions. I feel that this characteristic sets me apart from many people. Growing up, I witnessed my father work hard to own a business, receive two associates degrees, a bachelor's degree and pursue a master’s degree while battling Lupus, a debilitating, autoimmune disease. Eventually, he suffered kidney failure and cardiovascular disease, which later led to his demise. My father’s will to continue moving forward, be optimistic, and never quit is certainly a part of my DNA. On the other hand, my mother always taught me to be a hard-worker and to be of service to others. She taught me to help people in need, if I am able to do so. On May 10, 2021, not only did my mother become a widow, but she became a single parent to a teenage daughter. My father’s untimely death has definitely been a challenge for my family financially and mentally. It has been very difficult to say the least, but we keep persevering. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, I made a conscious effort to soar in academics and in life. My passion to pursue a career in nursing emanates from my father’s battle with Lupus and my desire to help people. My father battled this disease for over thirty years. At times when he would be hospitalized, I observed the work of many great doctors and nurses that cared for him to ensure he lived a quality life. Obtaining a nursing degree, and later becoming an APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) will allow me to make a meaningful impact on society, especially advocating for those in marginalized and underserved communities. Receiving a scholarship from the Rev. Herman A. Martin Scholarship Program will have a significant impact on my journey to receive a higher education degree. This scholarship will benefit me in offsetting college costs while relieving that burden. By helping diminish this financial stress, I can be fully engaged in my studies, continue to serve my community, as well as, continue to strive towards academic excellence.
