NomineeBio
Hi! I am Kendal, a student going to
major in Nursing at Kennesaw State University. My greatest passions include baking, writing, and helping people. I have been baking for a small part of my life. I have gained an interest from helping my grandmother in the kitchen.
I discovered my love for writing in high school while taking my dual enrollment English class. My teacher did an amazing job with teaching, which expanded my love for writing. With a desire to help and uplift others, the field of nursing just felt right to be my future career. My goal is to become a neonatal nurse, and help babies who can not help themselves. This specific job was introduced to me after my nephew was born as a preemie at 32 weeks and 2lbs. Watching him grow into a healthy baby has inspired me to help other families watch their babies flourish.
I believe that I am a great candidate because I had a job, participated in color guard, while maintaining a high GPA my senior year. I work hard every day to achieve my dreams and inspire those younger than me to do the same. Being a student while having these obstacles can be hard but having God on my side, I know I can persevere through it all!!

A large known issue in the world is immigration. Moving to live in a new place is very common in the world. Most people travel to better themselves and do what is best for their families. Although they have good intentions, a good portion of those people who migrate, do it illegally. Illegal immigration is defined as “all foreign-born non-citizens who are not legal residents... entered foreign territories without inspection or were admitted temporarily and stayed past the date they were required to leave”.
A majority of people are for the rights of immigrants. They would rather “reform” them than hurt and send them back. Immigrants work hard for their money while also still paying taxes. People feel like, for improvement, the government needs to work harder at trying to improve the immigration reformation. In America, the government purchased a warehouse to hold up to 1,500 detainees. They put up wired fences inside to keep the families together in the facility. This plan was cheap and was handled inhumanely.
Whereas, the opposition views on immigration differs. They see this illegal immigration issue as being a border security problem, so the government of the United States planned on building a wall at the border of Mexico to stop people from coming in and out. Families are being separated, the parents go to one place and the children go to another depending on government rulings.
I do think that immigration definitely needs reformation and it is complicated to come up with solutions that benefit both parties. Immigrants help shape territories. Most immigrants work harder at jobs than a lot of legal citizens do. I believe that me being a middle-class American has opened my eyes to actually see that richer citizens have a tougher time connecting to the underclass.
Debra Victoria Scholarship
As early as I can remember, helping other people succeed has always been my best interest. My parents being teachers impacted me to treat people with kindness and lend a hand when needed. When I was around four years old, I learned how to tie my shoes before everyone else, so I would help the ones that could not. Caring and showing empathy towards people are traits I embody that will help me with my future career.
Receiving this scholarship will help finance my education towards my goal. My parent's divorce took a toll on not only my parent's lifestyle but mine too. Watching my parents split into two-income households was a struggle. My mom rented a home with my two siblings and me. My dad moved in with his mom allowing him to save up to rent a house also. The divorce was an awkward transition for me to experience. I wished I could help my parents, but I was not old enough to do so. I knew they were not in the best circumstances so I would not ask for many items I wanted. My friends started making their own money and buying new things. I thought it was a good idea to get a job, rather than receiving the little money I was getting from my parents. During summer break, I applied for Zaxby's and got the job.
In the future, I plan on being employed at a hospital working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a Neonatal Nurse. Throughout high school, I have taken many courses of healthcare classes. These courses have helped me decide which career I would like to pursue. In 8th grade, our introduction to healthcare class went to the body museum which changed my life. I found the many different parts of the body functions fascinating and knew this was the pathway I wanted to do for the rest of my life. As a neonatal nurse, I will care for babies and understand how I can help someone who can not express their emotions. My nephew, born as a preemie has helped me discover this career. Watching him go from less than two pounds to a healthy baby is something I want other families in similar circumstances to experience.
This scholarship award will encourage me to follow my dreams of becoming a Neonatal Nurse. My parent's hard work ethic has inspired me to do my best in academics. I have only received one B throughout high school resulting in my 3.9-grade point average. In my 10th grade year, I decided I wanted to try out for Colorguard. I participated in Colorguard for the rest of high school. During my senior year, I continued to have a job. Working, doing Colorguard, and taking dual enrollment classes while maintaining all A's has helped me understand the importance of time management. This stressful time taught me that when I put my mind to something, I can succeed at anything I want.
If I am selected to receive this scholarship, I will keep the same drive I have now, throughout college. I will use this opportunity to strive as a nursing student and become an even better neonatal nurse. Being considered for this scholarship is an honor, thank you in advance.

Something that has helped me as a high school student was getting a job. Getting a job has allowed me to become independent, learn communication skills, and provide me with the luxury of spending money on my friends and myself.
As early as I can remember, I have had difficulty with my shyness. As soon as I had my interview my shyness kept me from wanting to participate in a lot of activities. As a result, I had no self-esteem or confidence when speaking around my loved ones. My family encouraged me to get a job, but I was afraid. My apprehension decreased once all of my friends started making money and buying new things. I began to want more than the little money I was getting from my parents. It did not take me long to get my applications out online. Two weeks later, I received a call for my interview at Zaxby's. The interview made me excited but scared at the same time. At this point, it was all or nothing with the process of getting paid. One thing that paid off for me in the interview was the fact that I had rehearsed potential questions with my father. As a result, the questions the interviewer asked were simple and plain. Therefore, I was hired at that moment.
At that instance, I became self-sufficient in my own right. I gained a new sense of confidence. I noticed that my posture and attitude began to improve. I believe my improvement was because I overcame the obstacle of shyness by stepping out of my comfort zone. Stepping out of my comfort zone led me to be more communicative and social with people that I barely knew. My behavior changed the way I viewed situations with people forever. I owed it all to my new job.
Having a job allowed me to work with people and learn new skills. My skills were mediocre at best with cooking, so I asked workers that have been there for a while for help on many occasions. After two weeks on the job, I noticed how we all bonded and began to talk about non-related work topics. I was communicating with people of all ages and some were as old as my father. Looking back, I do not believe I would have met so many good people if I had not applied for the job. I realize that through discussion people develop a friendship when they have to work closely together and have to talk about the needs of the customers.
Having a job helped me and my friends get to shopping centers every week. In the malls, I no longer had to window shop. I shopped in the most expensive places because I could afford to buy what I wanted. My spending behavior made me want to work more hours. Working more hours allowed me to treat my friends to various restaurants. Helping my friends and enjoying their company was one of the greatest feelings of all-inclusive joy that was made possible because I took the initiative and got a job.
In conclusion, my job took away my shyness. After I overcame my shyness, I was able to be a better communicator and learn more about people and life. My life seemed to be better in relations with my friends after getting the job because I was able to treat them as they used to treat me. In essence, I became self-sufficient and a reliable person, therefore I credit my job as significance in my life.

I have chosen to attend Kennesaw State University in the fall of 2022. Students who graduate from Kennesaw State University (KSU) tend to be successful after obtaining their degree. KSU offers many opportunities for me to achieve at a higher level.
I have decided to attend KSU because the Kennesaw campus is close to my hometown, and I can visit my parents when needed. Even though college is my next step, being near family will still offer comfort and the location allows me to go home within reasonable time. Living on campus will allow me to meet new people with different backgrounds, cultures, traditions, etc.
Attending KSU will introduce me to new friendships, clubs and college activities. I am looking forward to the unlimited experiences as a college student at KSU. Throughout high school, I have taken many courses of healthcare classes. These courses have helped me decide which career I would like to pursue. I plan on majoring in the nursing field to become a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse. A NICU nurse aids babies who are admitted into NICUs, delivery rooms, and emergency rooms. These types of babies usually have underdeveloped organs, troubled breathing, etc due to being born prematurely. My nephew, born as a preemie, has helped me discover this career choice. Two years ago he was born early weighing two pounds and thanks to modern medicine, he is currently a healthy 2 year old toddler weighing 28 pounds. I want to help other families in similar circumstances to experience a successful outcome.
Earning a college degree is essential for me to be independent and have job security. Several people have inspired me to seek a college education. Seeing how my parents will always have a stable income influenced me to pursue a degree for my independence. With both of my parents being teachers, education has always been important to me.
One of my literature teachers had the biggest impact on me. She always tried to make learning fun and keep students engaged in what was being taught. She encouraged me to be bigger than the town I grew up in.
In the future, I plan on being employed at a hospital working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a Neonatal Nurse. As a neonatal nurse, I will care for babies, show empathy and help parents during this time. While their baby is hospitalized, I will communicate and give the parents emotional support. I will provide nursing services as well as giving parental guidance with their premature baby. I am looking forward to seeing what my future will hold.
