I am an 18-year-old young man who believes hard work, kindness, and growth define who I am. Beyond school and work, I enjoy helping others whenever I can because I care about the people around me. I am also someone who loves learning new things and challenging myself to improve every day. Whether it is through work, school, or personal hobbies, I always try to stay determined and positive. In my free time, I enjoy playing games because they help me relax, think creatively, and connect with others. What makes me who I am is my willingness to work hard, stay caring toward others, and continue growing into the best version of myself.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My experiences with mental health have shaped the way I view myself, my relationships, and the world around me. Like many young people, I have experienced moments of stress, pressure, uncertainty, and emotional challenges while balancing school, work, responsibilities, and planning for the future. These experiences have taught me the importance of resilience, self-awareness, and emotional support. They have also helped me better understand how mental health affects people differently and why compassion and understanding are so important in everyday life. As an 18-year-old preparing for adulthood, there have been times when I felt overwhelmed trying to manage responsibilities and expectations. Balancing academics, work, future goals, and personal life can sometimes become mentally exhausting. However, these experiences have taught me how important it is to stay focused, ask for support when needed, and continue pushing forward even during difficult moments. Instead of allowing challenges to stop me, I have learned to use them as motivation to grow stronger and more determined to achieve my goals. My experiences have also influenced my relationships with others. They have made me more understanding, patient, and supportive toward people who may be struggling emotionally or mentally. I have learned that everyone is dealing with challenges that may not always be visible on the surface. Because of this, I try to approach people with kindness and empathy rather than judgment. Whether it is checking on friends, listening to someone who needs support, or simply being present for others, I believe small actions can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Mental health experiences have also changed the way I understand the world. I now recognize that success is not only about achievements, grades, or career goals, but also about maintaining emotional well-being and balance. Society often places pressure on young people to appear strong or have everything figured out, but mental health challenges remind us that everyone needs support at times. These experiences have taught me that vulnerability is not weakness. In fact, acknowledging struggles and continuing to move forward requires strength and maturity. In addition, my understanding of mental health has influenced my future goals. I want to build a future where I am not only successful professionally, but also emotionally healthy and able to positively impact others. Pursuing engineering is important to me because I enjoy problem-solving and innovation, but I also want to use my future success to encourage and inspire others who may be facing difficulties in their own lives. I hope to show younger people that challenges do not define their future and that growth often comes through overcoming difficult experiences. Being involved in school, work, and organizations like the National Honor Society has also helped me develop confidence, leadership, and a sense of purpose. Staying active and connected to positive environments has shown me the importance of support systems and surrounding yourself with people who encourage growth. Overall, my experiences with mental health have shaped me into a more understanding, resilient, and motivated person. They have taught me the value of empathy, balance, and perseverance. While mental health challenges can be difficult, they can also lead to personal growth and a deeper understanding of both yourself and others. These lessons will continue to guide me as I work toward my future goals and relationships.

Service has always been an important part of my life because I believe helping others and giving back to the community creates positive change. I try to embody a life of service through my actions, leadership, and willingness to support the people around me. As a member of the National Honor Society, I have participated in community service activities that allowed me to help others while also developing leadership, teamwork, and responsibility. These experiences have taught me that service is not only about volunteering, but also about being dependable, respectful, and committed to making a difference in everyday life. I believe service can be shown in many ways, even through small actions. Whether it is helping classmates with schoolwork, supporting friends during difficult times, assisting coworkers when work becomes stressful, or volunteering through school organizations, I always try to contribute positively to the people around me. Being involved in community service has helped me better understand the importance of compassion and leadership. I have learned that one person’s effort can have a meaningful impact on others, and that motivates me to continue serving my community. Higher education will allow me to expand both my knowledge and my ability to help others. My goal is to study engineering because I enjoy solving problems, working with technology, and finding creative ways to improve systems and processes. Engineering is a field that directly impacts people’s lives every day, from healthcare equipment and manufacturing systems to transportation and infrastructure. I want to use my education to create solutions that make life safer, more efficient, and more accessible for others. I am especially interested in using engineering to improve healthcare technology and manufacturing processes. Companies and industries rely on engineers to develop innovative systems that help produce medicine, improve safety, and support communities. By gaining the education and technical skills needed in this field, I hope to contribute to projects that positively affect people’s lives on a large scale. I also want to continue serving my community outside of my career by mentoring younger students, volunteering, and encouraging others to pursue higher education and careers in STEM fields. In addition to helping communities through engineering, I want to inspire younger generations to believe in themselves and work toward their goals. Representation and encouragement are important, especially for students who may not always feel confident about their future. I hope to become someone others can look up to by demonstrating hard work, determination, and a commitment to helping others succeed. To me, embodying a life of service means using your skills, education, and experiences to positively impact others. Service is not limited to one project or organization; it is a lifelong commitment to helping people and contributing to your community. Through higher education and a career in engineering, I plan to continue serving others by creating meaningful solutions, mentoring future students, and making a positive difference wherever I can.
