Deborah Stevens Pediatric Nursing Scholarship
My passion for nursing began long before I ever stepped into a classroom. From an early age, I was the kid who loved reading science books and doing science experiments. Just as much as I loved helping younger children feel safe and understood. That early combination of curiosity and compassion shaped the path I am on today. Science gave me a sense of wonder about how the human body works, and caring for children gave me a sense of purpose. Nursing brings those two parts of me together in a way that feels natural and deeply meaningful.
As I grew older, that passion only strengthened. I spend countless hours volunteering in schools, tutoring, and providing extra support to students who need encouragement. Babysitting taught me patience, responsibility, and how to communicate with children at different developmental stages. One of the most impactful experiences I've had was volunteering with Horizons at Georgia Tech, a program dedicated to supporting underserved communities. Working with children who face barriers beyond their control has opened my eyes to the importance of equitable and compassionate care. It also showed me how much a steady, supportive adult can influence a child’s confidence and future. I also plan to become an intern this summer at either Grady Hospital or The Walk in Clinic.
These experiences are why pediatric nursing feels like a calling for me. Children deserve healthcare professionals who see their potential, understand their fears, and advocate for their needs. I want to be the nurse who helps a child feel brave during a difficult moment, who reassures families, and who brings both knowledge and kindness into every interaction.
My academic journey has been shaped by a genuine love for science, especially chemistry and my nursing classes. These courses help me understand the “why” behind medical care, and they fuel my desire to keep learning. At the same time, being a cheerleader for Tuskegee University has taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to show up with energy and purpose that translate directly into the kind of nurse I aspire to be.
My long-term goal is to blend innovation with empathy, ensuring that every child receives care that is both advanced and deeply human. The Deborah Stevens Pediatric Nursing Scholarship would support my journey toward becoming a nurse who not only treats illness but also brings comfort, hope, and healing to children and their families. I am committed to learning, serving, and leading with heart as I work toward a future in pediatric nursing.
