As the daughter of immigrants, the importance of education was instilled in me early on. My parents did not have the same opportunities for education that I do now, and my family struggled because of it. Their lack of higher education meant that my parents had to work grueling jobs for much of their adulthood and had to make more sacrifices to make ends meet. Because my parents did not receive good opportunities themselves, they worked extremely hard to provide those opportunities to me and my sibling. My family ensured that I was raised in a good neighborhood and got to attend good schools, which allowed me to have a quality education throughout my entire childhood. Getting a good education early in life definitely contributed to my academic success, and I will always be grateful that I was given this opportunity. Education was so heavily emphasized in my household because my parents knew that it could open doors for me. They did not want me to struggle like they did, so they encouraged me to get a good education so that I could earn a degree that would allow me to have a high-paying, non-stressful job. But earning a high salary is not the only door that higher education can open for me: I want to receive a good education so that I can use it to better the world. My family has sacrificed so much to give me a comfortable life that I would like to put the same kindness that they have shown me back into the world. I want to use my degrees to pursue careers that would help people. I want to study political science and international relations so that I can change policy for the better and help people on a large scale. I want to study environmental science so that I can do research and make discoveries that could advance society. I want to do humanitarian work and public service. And I am going to need a quality education to accomplish these tasks. My family taught me early on that education is important. I was also encouraged to go to college and pursue the degrees that I want to earn, regardless of the financial constraints. My parents have always been willing to work as hard as they had to in order to put me through school, which shows how worthwhile education is to them. And I share their sentiment. I believe that going to college is the best way for me to follow a career path that I am passionate about and to eventually be able to use my skills to help others around the world. Affording and going to college may be a challenge, but I want to make my family and myself proud.
