Bio

My life goals are rooted in service, education, and advocacy. I aspire to become a licensed dental hygienist who not only provides excellent clinical care but also helps break down barriers to oral health in underserved communities. Long term, I hope to combine practice with outreach, using my skills to empower patients and promote healthier futures. I am most passionate about helping others feel seen, supported, and cared for. My passion for dental hygiene stems from my own upbringing with limited access to care. Experiencing the impact of a compassionate hygienist inspired me to dedicate myself to providing that same empathy and education. Beyond dentistry, I volunteer to support food access at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center, encourage donors with The Red Cross, and help provide meals and housing through Asha Hope Amanaki. These experiences strengthened my commitment to bridging resource gaps and improving community health. What makes me a great candidate is my resilience, perspective as a first-generation, non-traditional female student, and lifelong dedication to growth. At 33, I bring determination and persistence to my education, turning challenges into motivation. Recognized on the Dean’s and President’s Lists, I’ve shown academic strength while my volunteer service reflects my devotion to health and advocacy. I am committed to using my education not only for my success but to uplift others, making me an ideal candidate for scholarships that invest in positive change.

    Dental Hygiene Basics Scholarship
From an early age, I realized that a lack of dental care could quietly shape a person’s life. Growing up in a household with limited access to dental resources, I witnessed family, and neighbors face preventable oral health challenges that affected their smiles, confidence, and well-being. These experiences did more than spark my interest in dentistry; they ignited a determination to be part of the solution. My ambition to pursue a career in dental hygiene is driven by a passion for prevention, patient education, and the opportunity to make a meaningful, lasting difference in the lives of others. My academic journey at Pacific University has strengthened this commitment. Through rigorous coursework and clinical training, I have developed the knowledge and skills to provide evidence-based, patient-centered care. Beyond mastering procedures, I have discovered that dental hygiene is about building relationships. One of the most rewarding parts of my education has been transforming patient apprehension into comfort through empathy and communication. These experiences reaffirm that dental hygiene extends beyond technical skill: it’s about trust, empowerment, and advocacy for long-term health. Community involvement has further shaped my perspective on prevention and outreach. Earlier this year, I participated in Día de los Niños in Hillsboro, leading interactive oral health activities for children and families. I demonstrated brushing and flossing techniques, explained the connection between nutrition and oral health, and engaged children in ways that made daily hygiene approachable. Building on this, I volunteered with Project Homeless Connect in Washington County, assisting with dental screenings and providing hygiene recommendations for individuals experiencing homelessness. Together, these experiences highlighted how education and preventive care empower people at every stage of life and emphasized the importance of meeting communities where they are. They reinforced my commitment to bridging gaps in oral health access and inspired me to continue seeking opportunities that combine education, care, and advocacy. Looking ahead, I envision contributing to the field beyond the operatory. My goal is to work in community clinics and public health initiatives, expanding access to preventive services for populations facing systemic barriers. I also aspire to mentor future dental hygiene students, sharing lessons about perseverance, ambition, and the importance of compassionate care. In the long term, I hope to partner with organizations such as the Smile Foundation, delivering dental care and education to underserved communities locally and globally. While passion and drive guide my path, I recognize that ambition requires careful planning and financial preparedness. The demands of a dental hygiene program are academic, clinical, and financial. Receiving this scholarship would ease pressures, allowing me to focus fully on refining clinical skills, advancing my education, and pursuing leadership opportunities. From early experiences to outreach through Día de los Niños and Project Homeless Connect, I have seen how education, prevention, and compassionate care inspire confidence, foster wellness, and bridge gaps in access. With the support of this scholarship, I am ready to transform this passion into action, leaving a lasting, positive impact on the patients and communities I will serve.
