My path to becoming an elementary school teacher is shaped by my personal experiences and the goals I’ve set for myself. Growing up with seven siblings and moving between my mom and dad’s homes taught me the value of resilience and the importance of support systems. Despite the difficulties, the positive influence of my teachers stood out. Their encouragement and guidance provided me with hope and direction during tough times, and that’s what sparked my passion for education. I want to offer children the same sense of care and safety that I received. While I had to take a break from my college studies to support myself, my dedication to teaching has only grown stronger. I currently work as a permanent substitute teacher at an elementary school, which has only confirmed my desire to pursue this career.
Returning to college for the third time to finish my degree has been far from easy, but I am determined to see it through. Juggling the responsibilities of raising two young children, working full-time, getting married, and recovering from two surgeries has tested my perseverance in ways I never imagined. Still, I’ve managed to maintain a 3.6 GPA. The financial strain has been significant, and it’s only increasing as I now need to take time off from work to complete the required field experience hours for graduation. The added financial burden is overwhelming, but my drive to finish my education and create a better life for my family keeps me focused. No matter how tough the road ahead may be, I am committed to achieving my goals.

Mental health is a crucial issue in today’s world, especially among young people. As someone who has struggled with depression and bipolar disorder, I’ve personally experienced how these challenges can impact every aspect of your life. Mental health awareness, therapy, counseling, and medical intervention are tools that can help people navigate their difficulties. My experiences have not only shaped my views but also inspired my aspiration to become a teacher, so I can create a safe environment for students where they feel supported and understood.
Growing up, I didn’t always understand what was happening to me. The extreme highs and lows of bipolar disorder made it difficult to maintain balance. I finally began to understand that these struggles weren’t something I could handle on my own. Therapy and medication were essential in helping me regain control and manage my emotions. These experiences taught me how crucial it is to reach out for help and for others to feel that help is available to them.
In addition to my personal struggles, I’ve lost four friends to suicide before we were 25. Each loss has been beyond devastating. These experiences have shown me how critical it is to create an environment where young people feel safe to talk about their emotions, to ask for help, and to understand that they are not alone in their struggles. Losing friends to suicide has been a harsh reminder that we need to do more to ensure that young people know there are resources available to them and that their lives are worth fighting for.
Mental health and suicide prevention are especially important topics for young people today. School can be a stressful environment, and many students face pressures from academics, social media, and personal lives that can take a toll on their mental health. I’ve seen how students often struggle in silence, feeling that they don’t have the support they need. As a teacher, I want a classroom environment where students feel safe to express themselves and where their mental health is prioritized. I want them to know that it’s okay to ask for help and to talk about their feelings.
My journey with mental health has also influenced how I approach relationships and how I’ll interact with my future students. I’ve learned to be more empathetic and patient, not only with myself but with others as well. These lessons will guide me as a teacher, helping me create an inclusive and compassionate classroom where every student feels valued and understood. I want to be the kind of teacher who notices when a student is struggling, who makes them feel seen and heard, and who offers a safe space for them to talk openly about their challenges.
Becoming a teacher is my way of giving back to the community and contributing to a culture of care and awareness. I want to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and create an environment where mental health is talked about openly, and where students have access to the resources and support they need. If my own experiences have taught me anything, it’s that no one should have to face their struggles alone. By normalizing these conversations and providing support, we can create a generation of young people who are not afraid to seek help.
In the end, my experiences with mental health have shaped my career aspirations in a way that drives me to make a difference in the lives of others, especially students. Mental health and suicide prevention are critical issues that demand attention, and as a teacher, I hope to be part of the solution.

One of my most profound aspirations is to build impactful relationships with my future students. I believe that the foundation of an effective and enriching educational experience is rooted in the strength of the teacher-student relationship. My goal is to create a classroom environment where each student feels seen, heard, and valued, not just as a learner but as an individual with unique experiences and potential. This endeavor involves more than just academic instruction; it is about building trust, encouraging open communication, and forming a genuine connection with each student.
To achieve this, I plan to invest time and effort into understanding my students' diverse backgrounds, interests, and personal challenges. By actively listening and engaging with them, I aim to create a supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and questions. This approach will not only help in addressing their academic needs but also in supporting their emotional and social development. For example, I would implement regular one-on-one check-ins, encourage student feedback, and provide opportunities for students to share their own perspectives and experiences. These practices will help me mold my teaching methods to better meet their needs and build a sense of community in the classroom.
Building these meaningful relationships will have a profound impact on both my personal growth and the broader community. On a personal level, it will impact my teaching experience and professional fulfillment by allowing me to see the direct effects of my efforts in the students’ progress and well-being. Witnessing their growth and success will be incredibly rewarding and will drive me to continuously improve my approach.
For the community, a positive and inclusive classroom environment creates a culture of respect and collaboration. Students who feel supported are more likely to engage actively in their learning and contribute positively to their peers and the community. By promoting empathy and mutual respect within the classroom, I hope to inspire students to carry these values beyond school, thus contributing to a more compassionate and connected society.
Ultimately, building these impactful relationships with my future students is not just about enhancing their educational experience but also about shaping a more supportive and understanding community. Through this commitment, I aim to lay the groundwork for a future where students are empowered to achieve their best and contribute meaningfully to the world around them.

My passion for pursuing a major in elementary education comes from a lifelong love for learning and teaching, greatly influenced by my own early educational experiences. My first and fourth grade teachers had such a profound impact on me that, even at 30 years old, I still credit them with sparking my desire to become an educator. Their dedication and support inspired me to follow a similar path, aiming to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young students.
Currently, I am employed as a full-time permanent substitute teacher in East Alton, IL, where I have the privilege of teaching a diverse range of students from pre-K through 8th grade. This role allows me to directly engage with children across various age groups, encouraging their intellectual and emotional growth. I find great joy in helping young students uncover new concepts and develop a love for learning, just as I was fortunate enough to experience. Guiding children through their formative years and watching them thrive both academically and personally is incredibly rewarding. I am driven by a strong desire to shape their futures, inspire their dreams, and help them build essential skills, much like how my teachers did for me.
The creativity and innovation involved in teaching young children are aspects of the profession that truly excite me. I look forward to designing engaging lesson plans, incorporating hands-on activities, and using interactive methods to make learning both enjoyable and effective. I want my student's to find joy in learning, much like I did. I am passionate about laying the groundwork for students' future academic success, knowing that early education plays a crucial role in fostering lifelong learning and achievement.
Building meaningful relationships with students and serving as a positive role model are significant motivators for me. I understand that some of my students may only experience love and support in a school setting, and I strive to provide that for them. I cherish the personal connections I form with my students and the impact I can have on their social and emotional development. Additionally, my commitment to education extends beyond the classroom. I am eager to continually learn and grow professionally, staying updated with new teaching methods and educational research.I plan to pursue a Master’s degree after gaining a few years of classroom experience.
My passion for elementary education is driven by a combination of these factors and my personal experiences and values. Teaching is an inspiring and fulfilling career choice for me, and I hope to make as lasting an impact on my future students as my teachers made on me.
