Bio

My name is Kelcie Ponder, a high school senior from Zavalla, Texas. Growing up, I faced financial hardships that limited opportunities many take for granted. These challenges taught me resilience and determination. I’ve maintained a 4.0 GPA in high school and college while earning college credits through dual enrollment. I also participate in leadership roles like National Honor Society, Drug Free Council, Drug Free All-Star, and served as a Class Officer for three years. Outside of school, I work as a waitress and babysit for local families, which has helped me build accountability, compassion, and time management skills. Playing varsity basketball, softball, track, and cross-country has instilled discipline, teamwork, and perseverance—qualities I plan to carry into my future career. My goal is to attend Blinn College, complete my BSN through the ASCEND program at Texas A&M, and eventually earn my MSN to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. I’m committed to serving children and families with compassion and dedication. My decision to pursue this career is personal. My brother is blind and has a rare medical condition, and witnessing his journey has shown me the importance of compassionate, specialized care for children facing health challenges. I want to make a positive difference in the lives of children like my brother by providing support, comfort, and quality care.

Growing up in a household affected by addiction and chaos, I faced emotional struggles that shaped my understanding of mental health and resilience. From a young age, I battled intense feelings of despair, and I attempted to take my own life multiple times. These moments of hopelessness reflected my internal struggles with depression and anxiety, worsened by witnessing my parents’ substance abuse. These experiences have profoundly impacted my mental health and motivated my desire to heal and grow. My childhood was marked by instability and emotional turmoil. Living in an environment where substance abuse was common, I often felt helpless and overwhelmed. The chaos created an atmosphere of fear and confusion, making it difficult to find safety or stability. As a result, I developed severe depression and anxiety, feeling isolated and misunderstood. The trauma of witnessing addiction’s destructive effects on my family left me feeling hopeless at times. Despite these challenges, I refused to surrender to despair. I sought help through therapy, support from trusted individuals, and my own resilience—foundations that helped me begin my recovery. My mental health journey has been ongoing. I learned to recognize my triggers, develop healthy coping strategies, and build a support system I rely on during difficult times. Therapy helped me understand the roots of my depression and anxiety, and I worked to heal from past trauma. I now prioritize self-care and mindfulness, knowing that recovery is a continuous process requiring dedication and perseverance. These experiences have strengthened my resolve and taught me that healing is possible—even from the darkest depths. My personal struggles have clarified my educational and career goals. I am now closer than ever to pursuing a Master’s degree in Nursing. I want to help others facing mental health and substance abuse challenges because I understand how vital compassionate, empathetic care is in recovery. My experiences have inspired me to dedicate my life to serving vulnerable populations and advocating for mental health awareness. Throughout my recovery, I remain committed to growth. I stay engaged in therapy, participate in support groups, and practice mindfulness daily. I am determined to maintain progress by surrounding myself with positive influences, setting healthy boundaries, and prioritizing my mental well-being. I recognize that recovery is a lifelong journey, and I am dedicated to living a balanced, healthy life. My educational goals are clear. I plan to complete my undergraduate degree with excellence and then pursue a Master’s in Nursing, specializing in mental health. I believe my lived experience will allow me to connect deeply with patients and provide holistic care that addresses both physical and emotional needs. I also aim to work with underserved populations and promote mental health awareness, helping to reduce stigma and misinformation. Beyond my studies, I will continue focusing on my mental health by staying connected to mental health professionals and engaging in self-care practices. I also plan to participate in community outreach programs that promote mental health and substance abuse prevention. My ultimate goal is to use my experiences to inspire hope and resilience in others, demonstrating that recovery and growth are always possible. In conclusion, my journey with mental health and substance abuse has been one of pain and perseverance. The moments of despair led me to seek help and discover my strength. These challenges have motivated me to pursue a career in nursing, where I can make a difference in the lives of others facing similar struggles. I am committed to managing my recovery through ongoing support, self-awareness, and service, and I am eager to continue my education and contribute positively to my community. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to transforming my past pain into a purpose that benefits others and helps create a brighter future

My name is Kelcie Ponder, and I am a high school senior from Zavalla, Texas. Growing up, my family faced financial hardships that limited many opportunities, but these challenges taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of working hard to achieve my goals. I believe that success is not solely defined by attending college or earning a degree; instead, it’s about personal growth, making a positive impact on others, and pursuing a path that aligns with your passions and values. While college is a traditional route for many, I believe success can be achieved through various pathways—whether through hands-on work, community service, entrepreneurship, or life experiences. For me, success involves using my education and experiences to help others, especially children who face challenges similar to those I have faced. I am committed to becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner because I want to make a meaningful difference in children’s lives by providing compassionate, specialized care. My personal experiences, such as witnessing my blind brother with a rare medical condition, have shown me how vital compassionate healthcare truly is. These experiences have inspired me to pursue a career where I can offer comfort, support, and healing to children and families facing health challenges. I plan to use my education and training to serve my community—either by starting my own pediatric clinic here in Zavalla or by becoming a member of the existing clinic. Both options would allow me to provide accessible, quality healthcare to children right in my hometown, helping to improve health outcomes, prevent illnesses, and promote overall well-being. This can make a lasting difference in Zavalla by ensuring children receive the care they need close to home, reducing barriers to access, and supporting families in their time of need. In addition to my academic goals, I have been actively involved in community service and leadership. I have served as a Little Dribblers coach, which taught me patience, teamwork, and leadership. I was also a Drug Free All-Star and a member of the National Honor Society, both of which reinforced my commitment to healthy, positive choices and giving back to my community. Furthermore, I volunteer regularly at my church, where I help with various activities and support my church family. These experiences have helped shape my character, teaching me accountability, compassion, and the importance of serving others. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA, earned over 40 college credits during high school, and participated in sports and leadership roles. These experiences have helped me develop discipline and a strong work ethic, qualities I plan to carry into my career as a pediatric nurse practitioner. In conclusion, I see success as a continuous journey that involves resilience, passion, and service to others. My goal is to use my education and training to better my life and my community—whether by opening my own clinic or working within the existing clinic— to ensure that every child in Zavalla has access to the compassionate care they deserve.
