Kristinspiration Scholarship
As the oldest daughter of a single parent household, I carry many responsibilities and many goals. My mother has been struggling financially throughout these past years, especially due to the work shortage, and needs to take care of my disabled brother. I have proudly been able to obtain a job to help my mother with the bills at home. My father self deported to Guatemala during 2020 because he and my family were unable to support his medical needs financially. This has caused many struggles in my life, from mental health problems, to affecting me financially. However, these struggles within my household do not stop me from striving to be better in this world. It does not stop me from dreaming and pushing forward even when things get rough. I have many dreams which I aim to achieve, and can allow me to help my parents in the future. I would be the first gen of my family to achieve a career. Both my parents came from a cycle of poverty, where education was not guaranteed, or even something they had a fair chance to obtain. I am applying for this scholarship because I truly need to close the large gap between what my family is able to afford and the price tag on my education. In Maryland, Notre Dame Of Maryland is the only university in the state that offers a bachelor's in radiological sciences, a career dream of mine. I hope to one day be able to work within the National Children's Hospital in Washington DC, or any hospital within Maryland that can allow me to help children. However, the gap between what I am able to afford and what I'm required to pay is way more than what my mother earns on a yearly basis. I am seeking any help I can possibly obtain to help me earn a proper education and follow my career dream, in order for me to one day become a radiologist in the medical field and further continue my education to become a physician assistant. In my community, I have been able to make an impact by helping others who are also facing similar challenges to me. I have mainly been active with new incoming students who have recently entered the country, guiding them, and lending them a hand to acclimate to the new environment. In my community, I have also been able to volunteer to assist in soup kitchens by helping to feed the homeless, as well as being able to volunteer for some of the cultural events that occur within my neighborhood. I aim to strive for better when I move on to my secondary post-education. There are many things I hope to someday accomplish, which is why I am applying for this scholarship, because I want to be able to continue my dream, and be able to have a fair chance like many others around our nation have. I hope to one day make not just my parents, but also my community proud.
