Bio

Hello! My name is Keilen Crissia V. Agpalza, and I am a junior at Radford High School. I have a passion for mental health and a dream of becoming a pediatric psychiatrist. I plan on getting a bachelors in biomedical sciences after graduation, and following through with medical school. My goal is to help future generations of youth grow into confident, healthy individuals who feel valued and understood. The revolutionary, José Rizal once said that “The youth is the hope of our future”(Rizal). Rizal stood for the ideology that unity, education, and the nurturing of the brain are the basis for a striving community. Leaders like Rizal have inspired me to work with our youth and build a better foundation for their mental health. Growing up in Hawai’i and being a first-generation Filipino-American has taught me a lot about respect, dignity, and leadership. In Hawai’i we have a word for responsibility called “kuleana.” It is so much more than having a chore, it is about having a responsibility for the land, the people, and to yourself. Life is a privilege and our struggles are blessings, so “do everything in love” (Corinthians 16:14) and respect for others and yourself. In the Philippines we have a word for community called “bayanihan.” It is rooted by history of when Filipinos would carry houses on their shoulder for their neighbors. The world is bigger than ourselves, and it takes a community to lift a town on their shoulders. By providing support to our youth, we will have a future generation of resilient adults, who will be ready to work in unity.
