Bio

I am a first-generation college graduate, nonprofit founder, and aspiring attorney committed to expanding access, equity, and economic opportunity for underserved communities. Raised by a single mother in under-resourced neighborhoods in Houston, I grew up understanding both systemic barriers and the power of resilience. Those experiences shaped my mission: to use education, leadership, and the law to create lasting structural change. At the University of Texas, I studied abroad each year, became fluent in Spanish, and developed a global perspective on justice and opportunity. After graduating, I founded Aknew Approach, a nonprofit dedicated to exposing system-impacted youth to global travel, mentorship, and expanded possibilities beyond their environment. I believe exposure changes trajectories. I later became a founding member of the Harris County Youth Justice Cohort, helping bring the nationally recognized Credible Messenger Mentoring Movement to Houston. Our coalition secured over $1 million in funding to support community-based solutions for justice-involved youth. I am also a trained credible messenger mentor working directly with impacted young people. My long-term goal is to practice law at the intersection of business and economic justice, helping families build generational wealth while dismantling systems that exploit the vulnerable. Scholarship support is an investment in a future attorney dedicated to creating impact far beyond himself.

Bick First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation student means becoming the person you once needed. For me, it has meant walking into unfamiliar spaces without a roadmap, learning systems that no one in my immediate family had experienced, and carrying not only my own dreams, but the hopes of those who came before me. It has meant figuring things out while appearing stronger than I felt, asking questions I was embarrassed not to know the answers to, and refusing to let my starting point determine my outcome. I was raised by a single mother in under-resourced communities in Houston, where instability was common and access to opportunity was limited. I moved more than ten times throughout my childhood and attended schools that often lacked the resources and academic rigor needed to prepare students for higher education. In my environment, the most visible paths forward were often narrow. There was little exposure to college, professional careers, or the possibilities that existed beyond what I could see. When I arrived at the University of Texas as a first-generation college student, I quickly realized that I was entering a system I did not fully understand. I did not know how to structure my coursework, study effectively, or advocate for myself within an academic institution. At times, I felt underprepared and out of place. But instead of allowing that discomfort to defeat me, I chose to grow through it. I taught myself how to study, sought out mentors, asked questions, and leaned into opportunities that challenged me. I studied abroad every year of college, became fluent in Spanish, and intentionally placed myself in environments that expanded how I saw the world and myself. Those experiences taught me that access changes outcomes. After graduating, I founded Aknew Approach, a nonprofit organization dedicated to exposing system-impacted youth to opportunities beyond their immediate environment. I created what I wish I had growing up: access, exposure, and belief. Through mentorship, programming, and global experiences, I have worked to help young people see that their circumstances do not define their ceiling. Now, as I prepare to attend law school, my dream is to use my legal education to build pathways for others. I intend to work at the intersection of business law and economic justice, helping individuals and communities protect assets, grow businesses, and build generational wealth. I want to expand access to legal knowledge for families who have historically been excluded from the systems that shape opportunity. This scholarship would help relieve the financial pressure of pursuing a legal education and allow me to remain focused on the purpose that brought me here. It would support not only my journey, but the communities I am committed to serving. Being first-generation is not just about being the first to arrive. It is about making sure others can follow with more guidance, more confidence, and fewer barriers. That is what drives me. My goal is not only to succeed, but to become a bridge for those coming after me.

For me, ethical lawyering begins with a simple conviction: winning cannot become more important than justice. I plan to enter the legal profession as a diligent advocate, but also as an officer of a system whose legitimacy depends on honesty, fairness, and public trust. The strongest representation is not advocacy without restraint. It is advocacy disciplined by integrity. I will prepare thoroughly, communicate candidly with clients, protect confidentiality, and pursue every lawful avenue that advances their interests. At the same time, I will remain truthful with courts and opposing parties, disclose conflicts, and refuse tactics that depend on deception, intimidation, or the exploitation of unequal power. My nonprofit and advocacy work has shown me why that balance matters. Through Aknew Approach, I have worked to expand opportunities for system-impacted youth. As a founding member of the Harris County Youth Justice Cohort, I have also participated in efforts to advance community-based responses to youth justice. In these spaces, I have seen that good intentions do not automatically produce ethical outcomes. Pressure to secure funding, gain visibility, or demonstrate results can cause institutions to prioritize appearance over impact. That experience taught me to ask not only whether an action can be justified, but whether it is honest, transparent, and consistent with the people it claims to serve. Zealous advocacy risks compromising integrity when a lawyer begins treating every permissible tactic as an appropriate one. A strategy may fall within the technical boundaries of the law yet still mislead, exploit vulnerability, inflame prejudice, or create reasonable doubt about the lawyer’s independence. The boundary is crossed when loyalty to a client becomes an excuse to distort facts, conceal a conflict, obstruct fairness, or damage confidence in the justice system. I will navigate that boundary by applying a consistent ethical test: Is the action lawful? Is it truthful? Is it fair to the process? Would I be comfortable explaining it to a court, my client, and the community whose trust the profession depends upon? When uncertainty remains, I will seek guidance from supervising attorneys, ethics counsel, and the applicable rules rather than allowing urgency or ambition to substitute for judgment. I will also counsel clients honestly when their preferred strategy is unlawful or inconsistent with my professional obligations. If representation requires me to compromise those duties, I will step away rather than allow a desired outcome to redefine my values. My commitment to ethical practice is inseparable from my commitment to diversity and inclusion. Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, in the same year I graduated from college, my life did not unfold the way I had planned. Opportunities I had worked toward were suddenly uncertain, and the structure I had relied on disappeared. In that season of instability, I was diagnosed with severe stress and clinical depression. It was the first time I had ever been confronted with my own mental health in a way I could not ignore. What made this experience especially difficult was that I did not initially recognize what I was going through. I had spent most of my life in a constant state of pressure and survival, shaped by my upbringing in environments where instability and adversity were the norm. What I later came to understand was that my baseline had long been elevated stress. Living in a prolonged “fight or flight” state had made it difficult to identify when something was wrong because that level of tension felt normal to me. My body, however, forced me to pay attention. After experiencing an intense itching sensation whenever my body temperature rose, such as being outside on a sunny day, the discomfort began to grow more severe with each passing day. Eventually, the sensation spread across my entire body and became unbearable. This progressed over several months, prompting me to seek medical attention. For more than a year, multiple doctors and specialists were unable to determine the cause. After extensive evaluation, I was ultimately diagnosed with high levels of stress and clinical depression. Therapy became a turning point in my life. Through that process, I began to develop a language for what I was experiencing. I learned how to identify stress, how to understand my emotional responses, and how deeply my past experiences had shaped the way I moved through the world. For the first time, I was not just surviving my environment, I was learning how to process it. That shift changed everything. My goals began to evolve in a fundamental way. I had always been driven by a desire to serve others, but I came to understand that I could not effectively pour into others from a place of depletion. Prioritizing my mental health was not a distraction from my purpose; it was a necessary foundation for it. I became more intentional about balance, self-awareness, and sustainability, recognizing that long-term impact requires long-term wellness. This journey also transformed my relationships. As I became more emotionally aware, I began to approach others with greater empathy and patience. I developed a deeper appreciation for the unseen battles people carry and learned to listen with more intention. I became more honest about my own experiences, which allowed for more authentic and meaningful connections. In doing so, I not only strengthened existing relationships but also created space for others to be more open about their own mental health. Perhaps most importantly, my understanding of the world expanded. I began to see mental health not as an isolated issue, but as something deeply connected to environment, access, culture, and lived experience. In communities like the one I was raised in, mental health is often overlooked or misunderstood. Strength is frequently defined as endurance, and seeking help can be seen as weakness. I once operated within that same mindset. Now, I recognize how critical it is to challenge it. This shift has strengthened my commitment to both my personal and professional path. As I pursue a legal career, I carry with me a more holistic understanding of the individuals and communities I hope to serve. I understand that behind many systemic challenges are human experiences that are often unseen and unaddressed. Whether through advocacy, mentorship, or the institutions I hope to build, I want to contribute to spaces where people feel supported not only in their external circumstances but in their internal well-being as well. My journey with mental health has taught me that awareness is powerful, but action is transformative. It has shown me that healing is not linear, and that strength includes the willingness to confront what is difficult and seek support when needed. Most importantly, it has taught me that to truly change the world around me, I must first understand and care for the world within me.

“There is opportunity within chaos.” I did not always believe that. It is something I had to learn through experience. The greatest challenge I have faced in my life was not a single moment, but the environment I was raised in and the lack of structure, access, and guidance that came with it. I grew up in under-resourced communities in Houston, raised by a single mother, moving more than ten times throughout my childhood. Stability was never guaranteed. I attended underfunded schools where academic rigor was limited, and I was rarely exposed to what higher education or professional success could look like. In my environment, the most visible paths forward were sports, music, or crime. There was no clear roadmap to anything beyond that. When I arrived at the University of Texas as a first-generation college student, that challenge came to a head. I was stepping into a system I did not understand. I had never heard terms like “prerequisite,” did not know how to structure a course schedule, and lacked the study habits necessary to succeed in a rigorous academic environment. At times, it felt like I had been admitted into a race that everyone else had been training for their entire lives. But that is where everything began to change. I made a decision that I would not allow my starting point to dictate my outcome. I taught myself how to study. I sought out mentors. I asked questions, even when it felt uncomfortable. I learned how to manage my time, how to advocate for myself, and how to take ownership of my education. More importantly, I leaned into opportunities that expanded my understanding of what was possible. I studied abroad every year of college, became fluent in Spanish, and immersed myself in environments that challenged how I saw the world and myself. I had grown up in under-resourced neighborhoods in Houston where instability was common and opportunity often felt distant. In Khayelitsha, I saw poverty that mirrored parts of my own upbringing: limited infrastructure, scarce resources, and communities forced to survive without consistent institutional support. Yet I also saw resilience, innovation, and hope. That experience reframed how I understood both hardship and possibility. It was the moment I began to see how deeply systems shape outcomes, and how powerful they can be when reimagined. My inspiration to pursue law did not come from prestige or ambition alone. It came from service. After graduating from the University of Texas, I founded Aknew Approach, a nonprofit dedicated to exposing system-impacted youth to global travel and expanded opportunities. I created the organization I wish I had growing up, a space where young people could see beyond the limitations of their environment. Through mentoring and programming, I witnessed how exposure can transform mindset and trajectory. But I also encountered a hard truth: advocacy has limits without legal authority. I saw policies stall progress. I watched bureaucratic barriers prevent resources from reaching the communities that needed them most. Sustainable reform depends on policy literacy, strategic negotiation, and technical legal skill. Through legal education, I hope to practice at the intersection of business law and economic justice. In my community, wealth-building has long felt inaccessible. Families lack the tools to protect assets, structure businesses, and build generational stability. I want to change that. By helping individuals secure contracts, protect intellectual property, structure enterprises, and plan estates, I can contribute to long-term economic empowerment. Legal education will allow me to move from reactive advocacy to proactive infrastructure-building. The legal profession holds transformative power. It shapes markets, protects rights, and determines who has access to opportunity. I intend to use that power responsibly, to uplift, to advocate, and to build systems that create equity rather than exclusion. Law is not simply a career for me; it is a tool for lasting impact. Through disciplined preparation and purposeful service, I am committed to becoming an attorney who not only represents clients, but strengthens communities. That is the difference I hope to make.
