I spent much of 2025 feeling trapped in uncertainty, watching bills pile up while I struggled to find work. The weight of student loan debt pressed on me as I wondered how I would ever get ahead. That year of unemployment was one of the hardest times in my life, but it taught me the importance of planning, discipline, and perseverance. It also showed me that managing debt is not just about money, but about mindset, patience, and making choices that align with long-term goals.
My approach to addressing student loan debt combines responsibility, organization, and strategic planning. I start by clearly understanding what I owe, the interest rates on each loan, and the due dates. I maintain a detailed budget that prioritizes necessary expenses such as rent, utilities, and transportation while allocating specific funds toward student loans. I make it a point to pay at least the minimum required each month on time to prevent late fees and credit damage, while setting aside extra whenever possible to reduce principal balances more quickly.
I also leverage every available resource to reduce the financial burden. For instance, one of my loans, Sallie Mae, is partially supported by my mother, which allows me to focus on other financial priorities without falling behind. I plan to explore income-driven repayment plans and potential deferment or forbearance options during times when employment or income is limited. I also research scholarships, grants, and work-study opportunities that can supplement my income and reduce reliance on loans. These strategies are not just short-term fixes but part of a long-term plan to minimize debt while completing my bachelor’s degree in Communications.
In addition to practical steps, I have learned to approach student loans with discipline and a forward-looking mindset. Returning to school at 27 is a deliberate decision fueled by the goal of building a career in media and creative leadership, including launching my own production company, Kaiflix Productions. I view student loan repayment not as a burden but as an investment in my future. By staying focused on my academic and career goals, I can ensure that the money I borrow translates into opportunities that will ultimately allow me to repay my loans responsibly and achieve financial stability.
I also recognize the importance of accountability and education in addressing debt. I continually educate myself about personal finance, interest rates, and repayment strategies, and I use tools like budgeting apps and financial planning worksheets to track progress. By approaching my loans with awareness, planning, and discipline, I am actively working to reduce stress and build a solid foundation for my future.
Ultimately, addressing student loan debt is about more than just paying bills. It is about setting myself up for long-term success. My faith, discipline, and commitment to my education guide me in making thoughtful financial decisions. Through careful budgeting, leveraging resources, and staying focused on my career and educational goals, I am confident that I can manage and eventually overcome my student loan debt, ensuring that it supports rather than hinders my journey toward a fulfilling career in communications and media.

The moment my dad left for Desert Storm, I felt like a piece of my world had been taken away. I was so young, barely understanding why he had to go so far, why our home felt emptier without him. I remember running to my mom, tears in my eyes, asking, “Why doesn’t Dad want to stay with us anymore?” Those feelings of confusion and longing were mixed with awe, awareness that my father, a Staff Sergeant in the Army, was serving a purpose bigger than himself. Even as a child, I recognized the sacrifices he made, and those sacrifices have shaped every choice I make today.
When my dad returned, our home would burst with excitement. My older brother and I would wrestle each other in joy, bouncing off the walls just to be close to him again. Those reunions taught me to cherish every moment, celebrate hard-earned victories, and value the presence of loved ones. Watching my father navigate both military service and family life instilled in me lessons of resilience, commitment, and perseverance, lessons that continue to guide me in my education and career.
Beyond his military service, my father’s entrepreneurial spirit has also been a guiding influence in my life. Watching him navigate the challenges of business while balancing family responsibilities demonstrated resilience, creativity, and strategic thinking. His journey inspired my own career goals, fueling my dream to build Kaiflix Productions. I have seen firsthand how discipline, leadership, and the ability to adapt can turn ideas into tangible accomplishments. My father’s example taught me that combining vision with hard work is the key to creating opportunities not only for myself but also for others.
His service and entrepreneurship have shaped my educational journey as well. Returning to school at 27 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Communications is a decision rooted in the lessons I learned from him. Discipline, focus, and perseverance, the core values I saw in my father, have kept me on track despite challenges. My faith and determination are strengthened by knowing that these same values allowed him to succeed in both his military and business endeavors. His journey reminds me that hard work, purpose, and integrity are essential in achieving both academic and professional goals.
Ultimately, my father’s experiences have shown me that leadership, service, and creativity go hand in hand. His military service taught me resilience in the face of challenges, while his entrepreneurial drive showed me how to turn vision into reality. Together, these lessons inspire me to pursue my education and career with intention, aiming to build a meaningful life and a business that positively impacts others. His example reminds me that faith, hard work, and determination are the foundation for success, and they continue to guide every step of my journey.

Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
The past year has been one of the most challenging times of my life. In 2025, I faced the reality of being unemployed for an extended period, struggling to find work while still trying to support myself. Every day felt like a battle against self-doubt, stress, and uncertainty. I questioned my abilities, my direction, and even my worth. It was during that period that I truly understood how fragile mental health can be and how deeply it impacts every part of life, especially as a student striving for growth and achievement.
Being unemployed brought a heavy weight of anxiety and isolation. I would spend hours searching for opportunities, sending applications, and facing rejection after rejection. Each "no" chipped away at my confidence, leaving me feeling stuck and discouraged. Simple daily tasks became harder to manage, and I found myself overthinking every decision, afraid of making mistakes. That time taught me how easy it is to lose sight of your goals when your mental health suffers, and it made me realize that resilience is not something you just have; it is something you build, often slowly, through practice and self-care.
Despite these struggles, I refused to let them define me. I leaned into my support system, sought small ways to regain control, and reminded myself of my long-term goals. I realized that taking care of my mental health was not a luxury; it was essential for moving forward. I started setting daily routines, prioritizing sleep, exercise, and mindfulness, and making time for things that brought me joy and peace. These small, consistent actions gradually rebuilt my confidence and gave me the energy to face challenges more effectively.
Coming out on the other side of that difficult period, I made the decision to return to school and pursue my bachelor’s degree in Communications. Going back to college at 27 is a deliberate step toward a future I am determined to shape, one in which I can combine my skills, creativity, and passion to make a difference in the world. My experiences with unemployment and mental struggles have given me a unique perspective. I understand firsthand how critical it is to have access to support, encouragement, and resources when life feels overwhelming.
Because of this, I advocate for mental health in my community in practical ways. I openly share my experiences with friends and peers, encouraging conversations about mental well-being and normalizing the struggles that many students face silently. I make an effort to listen without judgment, offer support, and suggest resources when needed. Whether it is checking in on someone having a hard day or sharing strategies that help me manage stress, I try to create a culture where mental health is treated with the care and attention it deserves.
Mental health is important to me as a student because it is the foundation for everything else I want to accomplish. Without a clear mind and emotional balance, learning, growth, and personal development become exponentially harder. The hardships I faced in 2025 taught me resilience, self-awareness, and the value of seeking support. Now, I use those lessons to help others, to strengthen my own ability to thrive academically, and to build a future where I can use my voice and skills to make a positive impact in my community.
