    Anderson Women's Rugby Scholarship
Tennessee Technological University did not have a women's rugby team when I first started going here. My brother joined the university and found a family within the men's team here. I loved how their community looked but had no community of my own in that way. I research how to start a club sport within my university and, with the assistance of my brother, founded the Tennessee Technological University Women's Rugby Football Club. It took a lot of recruiting, and convincing girlfriends or sisters of the men's team, but we finally had enough girls with interest to start a seven's team. We had some very helpful people volunteer from the men's team to start teaching us the basics of the sport and I spent every moment of my free time researching rules, techniques, and watching rugby games to get a better understanding of this amazing game. We did not have enough experience, people, or funds to join the National Collegiate Ruby association but our team would reach out on social media to women's teams nearby to see if they would be willing to do a friendly game with us. We slowly continued to grow and get new people to join though university resources and events. I have never felt a sisterhood like I do with this team. I have seen each one of these girls grow, not just in the sport, but as people, scholars, and athletes. We have girls from all majors and walks of life in this group and it offers such an amazing perspective on how people who are so different can create a community like this out of nothing. A group that likely would have never crossed paths otherwise is now my closest friends and confidants. A civil engineering girl gets to toss a ball around with a nursing major and tackle an agriculture major. We have improved our skills and the team so much because of how close we get as people, not just as teammates. We have now competed in several tournaments and are starting to win games and gain confidence in our abilities despite our experience level. I was a part of a swim team for a decade and there were only a few people that I got as close with as I have with this entire team. When I first started attending this university, I could never have dreamed of having so many people that I love this much, let alone being the one that created the team to start that community. There are times I have not been able to participate due to injuries but I will always show up for these girls and come back once my doctor has cleared me to do so. They are my support system, my family, my advisors, and my biggest cheerleaders through every bit of life and I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to start this team and meet these wonderful people.
