I believe it is absolutely necessary for society to change the way it responds to the problems of the disadvantaged. Many facts support my opinion. To give a bit of background and be educated on my writing, I researched the definitions of the keywords of this topic. First up was disadvantaged. According to many sources, disadvantaged means “ of a person or area in unfavorable conditions or circumstances especially with regard to financial or social opportunities.” With this information, I concluded that examples of a disadvantaged person or group may include the elderly, disabled, and people of minority groups. From this, I went on to research what minority means and what minority groups exactly were. Minority means “the smaller number of a part, especially a number that is less than half the whole number.” Furthermore, when researching the characteristics of minority groups, I found that the main sources explained how minority groups are “singled out from others in society, and are subject to unequal treatment, collective discrimination, and have less power than the majority.” My essay focuses on society’s treatment of minority groups’ problems as part of the disadvantaged.
Society often denies the existence of certain problems of the disadvantaged. They try to believe that anyone truly has the same chance as the next person, despite this being proven wrong time and time again. We cannot fully grow as people or as a community if we turn a blind eye to the problems that need to be faced. It is important to recognize the origin of these problems to respond accordingly and prevent them in the future. I believe the origin lies in the fact that we are disconnected as a whole, held apart by our differences in race and social status. To connect as people and change these important problems, we need to have empathy and realize that everyone should have their lives considered. Many times in history the lives and worthiness of the disadvantaged were not. It is very important to teach the next generations that they have a voice capable of changing the lives of those that feel they have no voice or power. To not change our response to problems would allow ignoring problems to be normalized.
Society currently has no response to the problems of the disadvantaged. When problems are not addressed, distrust is created between communities and between minority groups and our world leaders. Those who are thought to have less power cannot trust those that make important decisions that affect our everyday life. We do not realize that the people around us make up society, although it may seem as if the government completely holds the torch and has the final say in what we do, what we think, and in the systems put in place. If society came together and solved problems that affect them and the people around them, we would realize that we actually hold the power and should have a response as problems of the disadvantaged affect everyone even indirectly.
To say that it is not necessary for society to change its way of responding to these problems would be saying that those that cannot contribute as significantly are not as important and that power and status truly do rule the world. Once we change the way we respond to the problems of the disadvantaged, including minority groups, our perspective on the impact of our involvement and the importance of a caring community will change.
