RonranGlee Special Needs Teacher Literary Scholarship
Professor Harold Bloom wrote, “I have learned that the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence.” This crucial statement brings light upon the true deepness of education and its field: helping students realize who they truly are, their value, and their abundant means potential. In special education, this idea takes on an even bigger meaning. Special needs students tend to face challenges that can hinder their sense of self or limit their confidence in their abilities. As a future special education teacher, my role will be to guide these students into a better understanding of their individuality and learn their personal strengths. This process requires many crucial characteristics such as patience, creativity, and a strong commitment to each student and their flurishment.
Bloom’s statement highlights that education is not simply about giving knowledge but about making and preserving self-awareness and confidence in a person's place and contribution to the world. For many students with special needs, this journey often involves persevering through barriers not only external but internal as well. My goals as a special education teacher are to help my students feel comfortable and secure in their unique traits, navigate their way through their challenges, and maintain a sense of self-worth that allows them to thrive. To accomplish this I believe in principles being upheld not only for students but for myself as well.
Initially, I would like to focus on fostering self-discovery because every student is different and has strengths, talents, and passions that deserve to be recognized. It will be my job to help them strongly identify and build on these abilities. For instance, a student who is struggling with verbal communication may work better in visual arts or problem-solving skills. By acknowledging their strengths, I would like to empower them to see their full potential and develop a sense of confidence in themselves.
I would also like to strive to provide individualized support made to meet each student’s specific needs. No two students are alike and through my beginning course in my college experience, I have really begun to grasp that on a deeper level. Through tools such as individualized education plans, adaptive learning strategies, and consistent encouragement toward students and their achievements. I would like to create an educational environment where every student feels seen, understood, and valued for themselves and their special qualities.
I also would like to work to embody a growth mindset in my students. Many special needs students face setbacks that can vanquish their confidence levels substantially. By teaching them that challenges are growth opportunities for a person, and help them build resilience, strength, and perseverance. I would like to also emphasize that progress made and not being perfect, is what truly matters. While encouraging them to take pride in their attempts and celebrate every achievement no matter how big or small.
Aiming to create a strong sense of community and connection in my future classroom is a priority. A supportive and inclusive environment is key for students to feel secure and valued in the classroom setting. By embodying kindness, teamwork, and respect, I would like to help my students create relationships that strengthen their feelings of belonging and self-love.
Yet, my ultimate goal is to empower and encourage independence in the classroom. Wanting to strive to teach my students to maintain the skills they need to navigate the world confidently themselves and speak up for themselves. Whether it is teaching life skills, different ways of communication, and especially self-advocacy techniques, I want to aim to prepare them for the full future that they have ahead of them.
In special education, teaching goes way beyond academics it should be about helping students learn about who they are, reach for their full potential, and understand that their voice matters. I believe that seeing a student’s journey to self-awareness and confidence will be the most rewarding aspect of future my work. Professor Bloom’s statement is a strong guideline in the principle of my goals to empower special needs students, ensuring they not just learn but also grow and thrive as they learn to love their place in the world and everything they can do in it.
