As an esthetician, I aspire to cultivate environments where clients can feel the same rejuvenation and self-love that self-care has introduced into my life. For me, skincare transcends mere routine; it embodies a nurturing approach to both physical and emotional wellness. The brilliance and resilience of Dr. Maya Angelou have illuminated my path, inspiring me to embrace my voice and my worth. When I first read her poem, Phenomenal Woman, I felt a spark of empowerment that has stayed with me. Her life story, marked by overcoming adversity and transforming pain into art, reminds us that our struggles do not define us—they strengthen us. Dr. Angelou’s journey from a turbulent childhood to becoming an internationally celebrated writer, poet, and activist is nothing short of extraordinary. She survived trauma, poverty, and systemic racism, yet she rose above these challenges to share her story with the world. Her courage to speak openly about her experiences as a Black woman in America through works like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings broke barriers and provided a voice for those who had long been silenced. Her persistent faith in the efficacy of self-expression is the aspect of Dr. Maya Angelou that most motivates and fascinates me. By means of her words, she was able to heal, inspire, and connect with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Her lessons on resiliency and the significance of loving oneself have had a significant impact on me that I will never forget. Having been through my own personal problems, which have included feelings of sadness and self-doubt, I find her comments to be a source of both consolation and drive. My mind is always reminded of her encouragement to "still rise," regardless of the challenges I face, whenever I feel disheartened. Beyond her literary achievements, Dr. Angelou’s activism in the Civil Rights Movement and her efforts to promote equality exemplify her commitment to justice and community. As a result of her collaboration with influential figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, she demonstrated that her artistic expression was inextricably linked to her cause. Her life is a demonstration of the power that can be harnessed via the utilization of one's platform to motivate others and bring about change. Her life is a testament to the power of using one’s platform to inspire change and uplift others. Dr. Maya Angelou has inspired me to persevere, to speak my truth boldly, and to embrace my identity unapologetically. Her legacy reminds us that our voices matter and our stories have the power to shape the world. In honoring her, I am reminded of my responsibility to carry forward her message of resilience, empowerment, and hope.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
The darkest moments of my life have also been the most transformative. Battling depression after dropping out of college and navigating the grief of my father’s untimely death reshaped my understanding of myself, my goals, and the world around me. These experiences, though painful, became the foundation of my growth, teaching me resilience and empathy and sparking a passion for helping others through their struggles. When I first stepped away from school, I felt like I had failed—not just academically, but personally. The weight of self-doubt was suffocating, and I questioned whether I would ever find my way again. It took time, introspection, and self-compassion to begin healing. During this period, I discovered the importance of mental health and self-care. I learned that stepping back isn’t giving up; it’s often the first step toward finding a new direction. This realization gave me the courage to return to college, where I earned both my associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in psychology. The loss of my father was another profound turning point. Grief pushed me to confront life’s unpredictability and fragility, but it also deepened my understanding of human connection and the need for support during times of pain. My relationship with my father taught me the value of perseverance, and his absence reinforced the importance of living a life aligned with purpose. These lessons now guide my relationships, helping me prioritize authenticity and meaningful connections with others. Through these experiences, I’ve developed a clearer vision for my goals. I aim to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and supported—whether through personal relationships, professional endeavors, or advocacy for mental health awareness. My background in psychology has given me the tools to understand the complexity of human emotions, and my own journey has given me the empathy to connect deeply with others who may feel lost or overwhelmed. My struggles with depression and grief have fundamentally reshaped how I view the world. I no longer see challenges as insurmountable; instead, I see them as opportunities for growth and transformation. I understand now that healing is not linear and that self-care is a lifelong commitment. Most importantly, I’ve learned that the pain we endure can be a source of strength and a way to inspire others to find their own paths to healing.
      Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success as a future esthetician who values self-care begins with embracing the transformative power of healing—both for myself and others. My journey is rooted in resilience, a trait forged through the most challenging moments of my life. Instead of settling in, I realized that I could have a career that I actually love to do, and that kept me motivated to have a better outlook on life. Twice, I have faced and overcome the depths of depression, first after stepping away from college and again following the devastating loss of my father. These experiences made me deeply aware of the importance of self-care, not just as a luxury but as a necessity for a balanced and fulfilling life. When I took time off from college, it wasn’t a decision I made lightly. My mental health had reached a breaking point, and I knew I needed to prioritize healing. During this time, I discovered practices that nurtured my well-being, from mindfulness techniques to understanding how physical care impacts mental health. This pause in my life wasn’t the end of my educational journey; it was a turning point. It gave me the strength to return to school and earn my associate’s degree in psychology, followed by my bachelor’s degree, which I hold with immense pride. I proved not only myself but valued the powerful words that my father left me, never to give up and focus more on the positive over the negative. The sudden loss of my father was another test of my strength and resolve. It took a while for me to get back on my feet and not waste my life away. In the wake of his passing, I found myself drawn to the idea of helping others navigate their own struggles. Returning to school allowed me to channel my grief into purpose, gaining knowledge in psychology that not only helped me better understand myself but also prepared me to support others. This education became a foundation for my passion for self-care and my commitment to creating spaces where individuals feel seen, heard, and valued. Now, as I pursue a career as an esthetician, I see a beautiful connection between my past experiences and my future aspirations. Skincare is not just about appearance; it is a form of self-care that promotes confidence and emotional well-being. My background in psychology equips me to understand clients' deeper needs, making each interaction an opportunity to uplift and empower them. Success for me means fostering environments where people leave not only looking better but also feeling renewed and cared for. This scholarship represents more than financial assistance; it is an investment in a vision. It will allow me to further my education, refine my skills, and create a meaningful career that honors both my personal journey and my desire to help others. By supporting me, you are helping to bring a holistic approach to self-care to life—one that bridges the mind, body, and spirit. Together, we can make self-care accessible and transformative for everyone who seeks it.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
I am currently enrolled in a reputable private esthetics program at the American Academy of Aesthetics, which is accredited by the state licensing board. After thorough research, I found that their curriculum not only encompasses critical areas such as facials, waxing, makeup, advanced skin treatments, and business practices, but it also guides students in developing a business plan by graduation. I have budgeted for the tuition, which is $10,500, alongside $600 for books, kits, and tools, and an estimated $100–$200 for the licensing exam fee. I intend to schedule the exam as soon as I complete my training. By adjusting my work schedule to night shifts, I can complete the 750 required hours in the mornings and make up any missed hours during holidays or seasonal breaks. The program will support me in passing the written and practical licensing exams and pursuing additional certifications that interest me, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments, which may cost between $500 and $2,000. They also offer resources for the state board application and licensing, study materials, and exam prep classes. I expect to obtain my license within 1–2 months after completing my education and additional certifications within my first year of practice. The program consistently informs students about internship and employment opportunities at spas, dermatology clinics, or salons. This will allow me to enhance my skills in customer service, retail product sales, and advanced treatments while starting to build a portfolio and gather client testimonials. The required resources for this endeavor include a resume and a portfolio highlighting my education and certifications and networking opportunities with industry professionals. The initial costs will be minimal, though transportation or relocation expenses may exist. I anticipate securing employment or an apprenticeship within 3 months of obtaining my license. In this program, I will create an action plan outlining what I envision my brand to be. Specifically, I want to offer products centered on specialties such as lash bath kits, brow kits, acne care, and holistic skincare. Building a clientele through a robust social media presence and a professional website is crucial for me. To draw in clients, I will implement promotions and loyalty programs. The resources I will require include branding materials like a logo, business cards, and brochures, as well as website development tools (such as Squarespace or Wix), social media platforms, and photography equipment for my portfolio and marketing needs. Ideally, my budget for branding and marketing would be between $1,000 and $2,000, with an annual website cost of approximately $100 to $300. I aim to launch my branding and marketing campaigns within the first 6 months of my practice. My long-term aspirations include opening a private practice or partnering with others to establish a spa. I plan to enhance my skills through advanced courses continually, stay abreast of industry trends, and network with skincare product companies for discounts or endorsements. To turn this vision into reality, I will need to invest $10,000 to $50,000 for my private practice, which will cover rent, equipment, supplies, and permits. I also anticipate costs for ongoing education and professional memberships that will depend on the business's scope, utilizing estimated savings or loans. I aim to start an independent practice within 3–5 years, potentially sooner. Maintaining adaptability and a commitment to continuous learning will be essential to ensure my success. I will track my progress, reassess my goals, and align my practices with industry demands to remain innovative as an esthetician. Collaboration, effective time management, and a strong work ethic will be my foundation for success.
