Baby OG: Next Gen Female Visionary Scholarship
Being a woman has shaped the way I move through the world in profound ways. I am a first-generation Hispanic college student, a U.S. military veteran, and a student pursuing a career in medical imaging. Each of these aspects of my identity intersects with my experience as a woman, influencing how I navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and work to make a positive impact in my community and future profession. Growing up in Boston with a single mother, I learned early the value of resilience and determination. Watching my mom balance work, family, and personal goals showed me what it means to be strong and resourceful. As a girl in a household with limited resources, I became aware of the importance of advocating for myself and creating opportunities even when they were not readily available. These lessons shaped my confidence, perseverance, and ability to adapt—qualities that continue to guide me in school and beyond. In the military, I faced environments where women were in the minority, and I often had to prove my abilities in spaces dominated by men. These experiences taught me the importance of self-advocacy, discipline, and leadership. I learned to face challenges head-on, to speak up when necessary, and to support others while asserting my own voice. These lessons translate directly into my studies and clinical experiences in radiography, where teamwork, precision, and clear communication are essential. Being a woman has also inspired me to give back and serve as a role model. I hope to increase representation of Hispanic students and veterans in medical imaging and to mentor others who may feel uncertain about pursuing higher education or healthcare careers. Representation matters—seeing someone like you succeed can transform the way you envision your own path. Additionally, being a woman has taught me the importance of empathy and understanding. I am more attuned to the diverse experiences and challenges that patients and colleagues face, which allows me to provide care and support with compassion. This perspective motivates me to create an inclusive environment wherever I go, whether in the classroom, clinical setting, or community. I hope to inspire others to embrace their unique identities and use their experiences to positively impact the people around them. Ultimately, my identity as a woman has instilled in me resilience, empathy, and determination. It has shaped how I navigate challenges, how I relate to others, and how I aspire to contribute to my field and community. I am committed to using my education, experiences, and voice to improve patient care, empower others, and help build a more inclusive and supportive healthcare environment.

I am a U.S. military veteran, a first-generation college student, and proud to come from a Hispanic family. Growing up in Boston, I was raised by a single mother who worked hard to give me and my family the best opportunities she could. Watching her sacrifices taught me the value of determination, responsibility, and perseverance. These lessons are what motivate me to pursue higher education and build a future in medical imaging. When I graduated high school, college felt out of reach financially. I made the decision to join the military to help pay for my education and to give myself the chance to grow in discipline, leadership, and resilience. My time in the military prepared me to handle challenges, adapt to new situations, and stay committed to my long-term goals, even when obstacles arise. Those qualities now guide me in radiography school, where success requires focus, precision, and care for patients. My goal is to finish X-ray school and become the first in my family to graduate from college. This milestone will not only be a personal achievement but also a symbol of the sacrifices and hard work my family has poured into me. Financial support will directly impact my ability to succeed because it will allow me to dedicate more time to my clinical training and studies, rather than worrying about how to afford the next step in my education. Beyond my own path, I care deeply about representation in healthcare. As a Hispanic woman and veteran, I want to help create more visibility for people like me in radiography. Representation matters because patients feel more comfortable when they see providers who understand and reflect their backgrounds. I also want to serve as an example for others from my community and for other veterans who may be uncertain about what comes next after service. Pursuing radiography is not only about securing a career, but also about opening doors for others who might not think it’s possible. In the future, I see myself contributing not just as an X-ray technologist, but as a mentor to students who are navigating the same journey. I want to share my story so that first-generation students, veterans, and young people from diverse backgrounds know that they, too, can succeed in healthcare. My vision is to use the opportunities given to me to improve patient care while also building a more diverse and inclusive workforce in radiology.
    Khai Perry All-Star Memorial Scholarship
My name is Kayla Lima Castellanos, and I am a freshman at Roxbury Community College. As a first-generation college student and a Hispanic woman, I have faced numerous obstacles on my path to higher education. Growing up, my family often struggled financially, which meant that resources and opportunities were limited. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for us, but the stress of financial instability was a constant presence in our lives. This environment made it challenging to focus on academics, as I often had to prioritize part-time work to help support my family. Another significant challenge has been navigating the educational system as a first-generation college student. Without family members who have gone through this process, I had to figure out everything on my own, from applying to college to understanding financial aid. It was overwhelming at times, and I often felt lost and unsure of my decisions. Despite these challenges, I remained determined to pursue a career in healthcare, driven by a passion for helping others and making a positive impact in my community. Balancing work, family responsibilities, and school has been difficult, but it has taught me resilience and perseverance. I have learned to manage my time effectively and stay focused on my goals, even when the path is not easy. However, the financial burden of college remains a significant obstacle. Tuition, books, and other expenses add up quickly, and I am constantly worried about how to make ends meet while maintaining my academic performance. The Khai Perry All-Star Memorial Scholarship would be a tremendous help in alleviating some of these financial pressures. With this scholarship, I could focus more on my studies and less on worrying about how to pay for them. It would allow me to invest more time in my coursework and pursue additional opportunities, such as internships or volunteer work, which would enhance my education and career prospects. Receiving this scholarship would not only support my educational journey but also honor the hard work and sacrifices my family has made to get me to this point. It would be a step towards achieving my dream of working in healthcare, where I can give back to my community and support others facing similar challenges. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity and continuing to work hard to reach my goals. Thank you for considering my application for the Khai Perry All-Star Memorial Scholarship.
    Expression in Medicine Scholarship
Free expression is a cornerstone of progress in medicine. It is through open dialogue, sharing ideas, and challenging norms that medical advancements occur. In medicine, free expression allows healthcare professionals to voice concerns, share innovative ideas, and advocate for patients. It ensures that diverse perspectives are heard, which is crucial in a field that serves varied populations. For instance, as a Hispanic woman, I bring my own experiences and cultural understanding to the table, which can inform more culturally competent care. Free expression encourages this kind of diversity in thought and practice. Moreover, free expression is essential in research and education. It fosters an environment where questioning and critical thinking are encouraged, leading to breakthroughs and improved patient outcomes. In my studies, I have learned that questioning established methods and proposing new ideas can lead to significant advancements. This is how we move forward in understanding diseases, developing treatments, and improving healthcare systems. Individuals within the medical field can protect and bolster free expression by creating inclusive environments where everyone feels safe to speak up. This can be done by promoting open communication and actively listening to all team members, regardless of their position or background. Encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration is another way to ensure diverse perspectives are included in decision-making processes. Healthcare professionals can also advocate for policies that protect free speech and expression within their institutions. This includes supporting whistleblower protections and creating channels for reporting concerns without fear of retaliation. By standing up for these principles, individuals help maintain a culture where innovation and patient care can thrive. As I continue my education, I am committed to fostering an environment where free expression is valued. Whether in a classroom discussion or a clinical setting, I aim to encourage open dialogue and respect for all voices. By doing so, I hope to contribute to a medical field that is not only innovative but also inclusive and responsive to the needs of all individuals. In conclusion, free expression is vital in medicine because it drives progress and ensures comprehensive care. By promoting open dialogue and protecting diverse voices, we can create a healthcare system that better serves everyone.
