College means more to me than just earning a degree. It represents growth, independence, and the opportunity to build the future I have always imagined for myself. For me, college is the next step toward becoming the person I have worked hard to become and gaining the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to accomplish my goals. From a young age, I have always been someone who loved creating. I enjoyed using my hands, drawing, designing, crafting, and bringing ideas to life. I have always been fascinated by the process of taking something from my imagination and turning it into something real. Because of this, I have been drawn to architecture and construction. I see college as the place where I can transform my creativity into professional skills that can create a meaningful career. My goal is to pursue architecture and eventually create my own architecture firm and tiny house company. I want to design and build affordable homes that are not only functional but also meaningful. I believe a home is more than just a structure; it is a place where people create memories, find comfort, and feel safe. I want my future work to help provide those opportunities for others. College will give me the education and training needed to understand design, engineering, construction, and the business side of creating my own company. College also represents opportunity. It will allow me to learn from professors, mentors, and professionals who have experience in the fields I hope to enter. I want to gain knowledge both inside and outside the classroom by developing my creativity, technical abilities, and understanding of how buildings are created. I want to challenge myself, continue growing, and learn how to turn my ideas into designs that can benefit people. I understand that reaching my goals will require dedication and hard work. Architecture is a challenging field that demands patience, problem-solving, and constant improvement. However, I believe my creativity and determination will help me succeed. My goals are bigger than simply having a career; I want to create something that impacts communities and gives people access to better spaces. Ultimately, college represents the foundation of the future I am trying to build. It is where I will turn my passion for creating into the skills needed to become an architect, entrepreneur, and builder. I hope to leave college not only with a degree but with the ability to design spaces, create homes, and build opportunities that make a lasting difference.

My goals for the future are to become an architect and eventually own my own architecture firm and tiny house company. I want to create affordable, well-designed homes that are accessible to different communities. I believe architecture is more than creating buildings; it is about creating spaces that improve people’s lives. My long-term goal is to combine design, construction, and innovation to build homes that are functional, affordable, and meaningful. The first step toward reaching these goals is receiving the education and experience needed to become an architect. Right now, I am working toward earning a Division 1 track scholarship to help fund my college education. I am training consistently and pushing myself academically and physically because a full athletic scholarship would help make architecture school more financially possible. Along with athletics, I am also working toward academic scholarships by maintaining strong grades and continuing to challenge myself in advanced courses. Architecture is a career that requires a large investment of time and money. The education path is demanding, and architecture students are often responsible for purchasing many of the materials needed for their projects. While some digital resources and software may be provided through school, many physical supplies are not. Students often need to buy materials for models, presentation boards, drawings, designs, tools, paper, and other project necessities. These costs add up throughout the years of studying architecture. Because of this, my plan is to use every resource available to me. My main resources will include athletic scholarships, academic scholarships, financial aid, and personal determination. A full track scholarship would help cover major college expenses such as tuition, housing, and other fees, allowing me to put more focus into my architecture studies. Academic scholarships would help provide additional support for materials and supplies that are required for my classes. During college, I plan to continue developing my skills in architecture, engineering, design, and construction. I want to take advantage of internships, mentorships, and hands-on experiences that will prepare me for my future career. Learning from professionals will help me understand the business side of architecture so that I can eventually create my own company. After completing my education and gaining experience in the field, my goal is to start my own architecture firm and tiny house company. I want to create a business that focuses on affordable housing and provides people with safe, creative, and sustainable homes. My path will require dedication, planning, and the ability to balance multiple responsibilities, but I believe each step I am taking now is preparing me for my future. By combining my academic achievements, athletic opportunities, and passion for architecture, I am building a foundation that will allow me to reach my goals and create something that positively impacts others.
      Weld Our Soul Scholarship
From a very young age, I have always been drawn to creating things with my hands. I loved drawing floor plans, building, crafting, and putting different pieces together to create something new. Creativity has always been a natural part of who I am, and I have always enjoyed the process of taking an idea from my imagination and turning it into something real. Because of this passion, I am pursuing a future in architecture with the goal of one day owning my own architecture firm and tiny house company. I believe welding connects directly to my future because it combines creativity, construction, and hands-on skills. Learning how to work with metal and understand the structure of buildings will help me become a better designer and builder. Living in Texas has allowed me to see the constant growth and construction happening around me. There are always new buildings, homes, and structures being created. Seeing these projects come together has made me more interested in the construction side of design. Many of the structures I see use strong metal frames and beams, which has shown me the importance of having knowledge beyond just drawing and designing. Understanding how things are built is just as important as imagining them. Pursuing welding through a trade school or college program would give me valuable hands-on experience and technical skills that will support my long-term goals. Welding would teach me how to work with materials, understand strength and stability, and create structures that are both functional and safe. These skills would help me when designing and building the tiny homes I hope to create in the future. My dream is to create tiny homes using different types of structures, including shipping containers, buses, vans, and other unique spaces. I want to transform these materials into affordable, comfortable, and creative homes for people. Welding would allow me to better understand how to modify and reinforce these structures so they can become safe and lasting places to live. For me, welding is not just a trade; it is another form of creation. It is a way to combine my creativity with practical skills. I see a future in welding because it connects with my passion for design, construction, and helping people. By learning this skill, I will be one step closer to achieving my goal of creating innovative homes and building a company that brings my ideas to life.

Growing up with my grandparents after losing my mother and having my father in and out of my life shaped many parts of who I am, but one of the biggest impacts has been my relationship with math and my grandfather. My grandfather, who was a math teacher in Trinidad and later taught high school math in Brooklyn, New York, became one of the biggest influences in my life. He was also a corrections officer, and those experiences made him a very disciplined, structured, and serious person. When I was younger, my grandfather and I would spend hours sitting at the table practicing times tables and solving challenging math problems. At the time, from ages 8 to 13, I found it frustrating and often wondered why I had to spend so much time doing math. However, as I grew older, I realized those moments were his way of connecting with me and passing down something important. Throughout my years in school, I noticed that many of the teachers I admired most were math teachers. One teacher who stands out to me is my fourth-grade math teacher, Ms. Morah. After losing my mother, I grew up missing a certain type of motherly love, and she became someone who gave me encouragement and kindness. She was an amazing teacher who could break math down into simple steps, but she was also caring, joyful, and always had a smile that made people feel welcomed. Even now, as I approach my senior year of high school, I still remember the impact she had on me. It was only recently that I realized there was a connection between the people who inspired me most and my love for math. Math became a bridge between me and my grandfather. As I advanced into higher-level math classes, I started to understand him more. Our relationship changed from one where I felt like I was simply being taught by him to one where we could have equal conversations about mathematics, ideas, and even topics like politics that interest him. Math has given me more than an academic skill. It has given me a deeper understanding of my grandfather and created a bond between us that I did not fully appreciate when I was younger. What once felt like a strict routine became a foundation for connection, growth, and respect.

My sister Tyana passed away in 2018, and because of the circumstances of our lives, we were never able to truly grow up together. I only met her once, but I have learned about her through the stories people share, the photographs I have of her, and the memories others hold close. Even though my time with her was limited, the impact she left behind has shaped the way I see creativity, expression, and the importance of having a voice. From what I have heard about Tiana, she was outgoing, confident, outspoken, and full of personality. She was educated, creative, and had a natural talent for rapping and rhyming. The way she spoke was part of who she was — she was quick with her words, fearless, and someone who could not easily be challenged. Her confidence and ability to express herself showed the power of having a strong voice. Because of who she was, I have always felt inspired to create something that represents her. One of my goals is to start a radio station or create a business focused on supporting youth voices and young rappers. I want to build a space where young people can express themselves through music, storytelling, and creativity. A place where their thoughts, experiences, and talents are valued. I believe creating opportunities for young artists would be a way for Tiana’s spirit to continue living through the voices of others. She had a presence that was bold and unforgettable, and I want to create an environment where other young people can develop that same confidence. Many young people have important things to say but do not always have the resources, platforms, or support to share their talents. I want to help change that. This dream is about more than music. It is about creating a community where young people feel heard and empowered. Through this future business, I hope to honor my sister by building something that reflects the qualities she represented: confidence, creativity, intelligence, and self-expression. Although I did not get the chance to know Tiana the way I wish I could have, I feel connected to her through the stories and memories left behind. Creating a platform for youth voices would allow me to turn that connection into something positive that impacts others. It would be a space where creativity is celebrated, voices are amplified, and a part of who she was continues through the next generation.
      Students Impacted by Incarceration Scholarship
Incarceration has impacted my life in ways that have shaped who I am, my perspective, and my goals for the future. My father has been in and out of prison for most of my life, and when I was four years old, my mother passed away. Because of these circumstances, I was raised by my grandparents, who became the people responsible for supporting and guiding me. Living with my grandparents has taught me many lessons, but it has also come with challenges. They came to America as adults from the Caribbean, and because they did not experience childhood in the same environment I did, there has always been a generational and cultural gap between us. They raised me with a strict and structured mindset based on the values they grew up with. While I appreciate everything they have done for me, this difference sometimes made it difficult to feel fully understood. Because my father was absent for much of my life, I learned independence at a young age. I found comfort and motivation through school, track, art, and my hobbies. These activities became important outlets that helped me handle the pressures in my life. Art allowed me to express myself creatively, while track taught me discipline, dedication, and the importance of continuing even when things are difficult. My father’s incarceration created distance between us and affected the way I experienced family and support. Recently, my father has returned to my life and has chosen to stay involved. His return has allowed me to experience more independence and opportunities that I did not have before, such as spending more time with friends and experiencing a more typical teenage life. This experience has taught me that my circumstances do not determine my future. The challenges I have faced have pushed me to become ambitious, responsible, and determined. I have learned how to rely on myself, work toward my goals, and create opportunities despite difficult situations. These lessons have influenced my academic and career ambitions. I plan to pursue architecture because I believe design has the power to improve people’s lives. My goal is to become an architect and eventually own my own architecture firm and tiny house company. I want to create affordable homes and spaces that help people feel safe, supported, and valued. My experiences have shown me how important it is to have a stable environment and a place that feels like home. In the future, I want my work to provide that feeling for others. Incarceration has been a major part of my story, but it has also shaped my resilience, creativity, and determination to build a better future for myself and the communities I hope to serve.

My love for architecture comes from my belief that buildings are more than just structures; they are spaces that hold people’s lives, memories, and experiences. Architecture is a way of combining creativity, problem-solving, and service to create something meaningful. Ever since I began taking architecture and engineering classes in high school, I have discovered that this field is not only about drawing buildings or creating designs. It is about understanding people and creating spaces that improve their everyday lives. What inspires me most about architecture is the connection it has with communities. Architects have the ability to design places that bring people together, support their needs, and create opportunities. Whether it is restoring an old building and giving it new life or designing a space for someone who needs it, architecture has the power to create positive change. I love the idea that something I design could become a place where people feel safe, comfortable, and connected. My passion for architecture comes from my interest in designing and creating things specifically for others. I enjoy the process of taking an idea and turning it into something real. Architecture allows me to use my creativity while also using technical skills to solve problems. It challenges me to think about how materials, space, and design can work together to create something useful and beautiful. My future goal is to pursue a degree in architecture and eventually create my own architecture firm. I hope to build a company that combines architecture and construction, with a focus on creating affordable housing solutions. One of my biggest dreams is to start a tiny house and mobile home company that provides well-designed, affordable homes for people from all backgrounds. I believe everyone deserves access to a safe and comfortable place to live, and I want my work to help make that possible. Tiny homes interest me because they show how thoughtful design can transform a small space into a functional and meaningful home. They require creativity and innovation because every detail matters. I want to create homes that are affordable without sacrificing quality, comfort, or individuality. Through my future company, I hope to make housing more accessible and create designs that truly serve people. Receiving this scholarship would greatly help me as I continue my education in architecture. Architecture is a challenging and expensive degree path that requires many years of schooling, often taking around eight to ten years when including professional training and licensing. Along with tuition costs, architecture students are required to purchase many materials for projects, models, and presentations. Supplies such as building materials, tools, drafting equipment, and other resources can become expensive over time. This scholarship would help reduce some of the financial challenges that come with pursuing this career. It would allow me to invest in the materials and resources I need to succeed in my classes while focusing more of my energy on learning and developing my skills. Having support throughout my education would help me continue pursuing my passion without being limited by the cost of the supplies and experiences needed to become an architect. Architecture is not just a career choice for me; it is a way for me to contribute something meaningful to the world. I want to use my creativity and knowledge to design spaces that improve lives. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my goals of becoming an architect, creating my own firm, and building affordable homes for communities in need.

I want to pursue a career in architecture because I believe architecture is more than just designing buildings; it is about creating spaces that serve people and strengthen communities. I am currently taking architecture and engineering classes throughout high school, which has allowed me to begin exploring the different aspects of this field. Through these classes, I have learned that architecture combines creativity, problem-solving, engineering, and service. It is a career where every design has a purpose and every structure has the ability to impact the lives of the people who use it. What interests me most about architecture is the relationship between design and community. Architecture is not only about creating something visually appealing; it is about understanding the needs of people and designing spaces specifically for them. Buildings can influence how people live, work, learn, and connect with one another. A well-designed space can bring people together, provide opportunities, and improve the quality of life within a community. One part of architecture that inspires me is the ability to transform existing spaces. Taking old buildings that may have been forgotten or underused and reviving them into lively, meaningful places shows the power of design. Architecture can preserve history while creating something new and useful for future generations. I admire how architects can look at a structure and imagine what it could become instead of only seeing what it is. This process of rebuilding, improving, and reimagining spaces is something I hope to be a part of in my future career. I am also interested in designing homes that are accessible and affordable for everyone. Housing is an essential part of life, and I believe everyone deserves a safe and comfortable place to call home. My long-term goal is to create my own architecture firm that combines architecture, construction, and innovation. I hope to develop a company focused on creating affordable tiny houses and mobile homes that are high-quality, sustainable, and designed for a variety of people and communities. Tiny homes especially interest me because they show how thoughtful design can maximize space while reducing unnecessary costs. They challenge architects to think creatively about how people live and what they truly need. I want to use my skills to create homes that are practical, beautiful, and available to people who may not have access to traditional housing options. As I continue my education and eventually pursue an architecture degree, I hope to develop the technical skills, creativity, and understanding needed to make a difference through design. I want my work to reflect my belief that architecture should be centered around people. Every project should tell a story, solve a problem, and contribute something positive to the community. My goal is not just to become an architect who designs buildings, but to become someone who creates opportunities through architecture. I want to build spaces where people feel supported, included, and connected. Through my future firm, I hope to combine creativity, construction, and compassion to make affordable housing and meaningful spaces accessible to everyone.

Growing up, my life experiences have shaped me into the person I am today. I live with my grandparents because my mother passed away when I was four years old, and my father has been in and out of my life. My grandparents became the foundation of my childhood, providing me with guidance, support, and stability. Their influence has played a major role in the values I carry and the goals I have for my future. My grandmother has always been one of the strongest people I know. She owned a successful cleaning company, and when I was younger, I often helped her with her jobs. Working alongside her taught me the importance of responsibility, hard work, and dedication. I was able to see firsthand what it meant to build something through commitment and perseverance. Helping her with her business also introduced me to skills like organization, communication, and problem-solving, which continue to benefit me today. About three years ago, my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Watching someone who had always been the strongest person in my life become sick was difficult. For so long, she was the person who cleaned, cooked, cared for everyone, and made sure our home was running smoothly. When her health began to decline, I had to step up and take on many of the responsibilities she once carried. During that time, I became more than just a granddaughter. I became an athlete, a scholar, a caregiver, a cook, and someone who helped keep our household together. I learned about medicine, caretaking, and everyday life skills that I may not have learned as quickly otherwise. I helped in ways I never expected, and through that experience, I developed patience, humility, and a deeper understanding of what it means to care for someone. These experiences have influenced my communication skills and the way I view the world. Taking care of my grandmother taught me how important it is to listen, be understanding, and support others. It also showed me the strength that can come from difficult situations. Although those years were challenging, they helped me grow into a more responsible and compassionate person. My experiences with my grandmother’s business and my own interests in creativity, architecture, and engineering have shaped my future goals. I hope to one day create my own architecture company focused on building tiny homes that are affordable, mobile, and accessible to people from all backgrounds. I want to design spaces that are not only practical but also make people feel safe, comfortable, and valued. The lessons I learned from my grandmother have influenced the type of person and professional I want to become. She showed me the importance of creating something meaningful, whether it is a business, a home, or a supportive environment for others. My goal is to combine my creativity, technical skills, and compassion to build a future where my work can positively impact the lives of others. Everything I have experienced has helped prepare me for the path ahead. My challenges have become lessons, and my responsibilities have become strengths. I carry my grandmother’s influence with me as I continue to pursue my dreams and create a future built on resilience, innovation, and purpose.

I am a Trinidadian high school senior with a passion for architecture, engineering, and creative problem-solving. From a young age, I have always been interested in creating, designing, and finding new ways to bring ideas to life. I enjoy exploring how design and technology can work together to create spaces that are not only functional but also inspiring. Architecture and engineering allow me to combine creativity with logic, giving me the opportunity to build solutions that can positively impact the way people live. My interest in architecture comes from my love for creativity, innovation, and understanding how things are made. I enjoy thinking about how structures are planned, how spaces affect people, and how designs can reflect personality and purpose. Engineering has also inspired me because it challenges me to solve problems, think critically, and approach challenges with patience and determination. These interests have shaped my goal of pursuing a career where I can continue learning and developing my skills in both fields. Outside of academics, I enjoy many activities that help me grow as a person. I love watching anime because it inspires my imagination through storytelling, art, and character development. I also run track, which has taught me discipline, commitment, and the importance of staying dedicated to my goals. Balancing school and athletics has helped me become more organized and resilient. Track has shown me that success requires consistency, hard work, and the ability to keep pushing forward even when things become difficult. Cooking is another passion of mine because it allows me to be creative in a different way. I enjoy experimenting and creating something from my own ideas. I also value spending quality time with my family because they provide me with love, support, and encouragement. They have played an important role in shaping my values and motivating me to pursue my dreams. In the future, I hope to combine my skills and passions to create my own tiny house company and architecture firm. I want to design unique, sustainable homes that represent individuality, comfort, and innovation. My goal is to create spaces that are meaningful and accessible while showing that small designs can have a big impact. As I continue my journey, I hope to keep challenging myself, learning new skills, and turning my ideas into reality. I aspire to build a career that allows me to use creativity, engineering, and thoughtful design to inspire others and make a positive difference.

Running track and field has been one of the most important parts of my high school experience. I started competing at the high school level during my freshman year, not knowing how much the sport would shape my life. At the beginning, balancing academics and track felt natural. My coaches and teammates created an environment that was exciting, supportive, and fun. Practices were not just about training; they were about building friendships, creating memories, and becoming part of a team. As the years went by, things began to change. Older teammates graduated, new athletes joined, and the team dynamic shifted. I found myself feeling more alone within the sport, even though I still had the support of my coaches and teammates. Track became less about simply showing up and more about learning how to stay motivated, disciplined, and focused even when things became difficult. Now, as a senior, I have reached a point in my journey where I am the only senior sprinter on the team. Being in this position has taught me responsibility and leadership. I have had to learn how to encourage myself while also being an example for younger athletes. It can sometimes feel challenging being the oldest person in my event group, but it has also shown me how much I have grown since freshman year. Along with track, academics have also been a major part of my high school experience. I have taken multiple AP classes throughout my years, which has pushed me to develop better time management skills. Managing difficult classes, assignments, practices, competitions, and personal responsibilities has not always been easy. There were moments when everything felt overwhelming, but I learned how to keep moving forward. Currently, I am continuing my track journey through summer track while also taking college classes. This season of my life has been one of the most demanding because I am preparing for the next chapter while still finishing my last year of high school. Balancing training with college-level work has tested my patience, dedication, and ability to stay organized. Even though it has been stressful, it has also reminded me of how capable I am. Throughout this entire journey, my faith has played a major role. God has helped guide me through every challenge and has given me strength when I felt tired or uncertain. My faith has reminded me that every obstacle has a purpose and that growth often comes from difficult experiences. My family has also been a huge source of support. Their encouragement and belief in me have helped me continue pushing forward. Looking back at these four years, I would not change anything. Every practice, race, difficult class, and stressful moment has helped shape who I am. Track has taught me discipline, perseverance, and the importance of continuing even when the journey becomes harder than expected. It has shown me that success is not only measured by medals or times but also by the person you become along the way. Although this chapter of my life has been challenging, it has also been rewarding. I am proud of the work I have put in and the person I have become through this experience. Track has given me more than athletic skills; it has given me confidence, memories, and lessons that I will carry with me into the future. With the support of God, my family, my coaches, and everything I have learned, I know I am prepared for whatever comes next.

June 4th was the day after I took my freedom back from my strict Caribbean grandparents. I woke up full of energy, love, and peace, ready to face whatever the day brought. I also spoke to my grandma after three years of limited conversation. Because of her breast cancer and the generational gap between us, we had grown distant. But that day, we talked for hours. For the first time in years, I felt that motherly love again. Overwhelmed with happiness, I grabbed my iPad, played “Fallin’” by Kes, and ran outside wearing a sports bra, Nike Pros, and no shoes. I ran, walked when I needed to, rested when I needed to, and explored my neighborhood. I even went to my job. It was one of the first moments where I felt completely free. Later, my papa found me in his car. That was when my freedom turned into a chase. I realized how easily joy can become control when someone else sees your choices as a problem. Because of how my body was viewed as a young woman, my independence became something that needed to be stopped. When we got home, he was angry and yelling. I pushed back because I felt unheard. I felt like my age and gender made people believe I was incapable of understanding my own emotions or making decisions. I felt like I was constantly being treated as a child instead of a person. The situation escalated until my papa called the police. When they arrived, they saw a scared, crying girl in her own home. I begged for help, but they said they had to wait for the medical team. When the medical team arrived, I felt overwhelmed by the number of strangers surrounding me. I was terrified because, from my perspective, people were trying to take control of my body and my choices. I was taken to the hospital, where I felt disconnected from myself and overwhelmed by everything happening around me. They ran tests and evaluated me. Afterward, I was transferred to Houston Behavioral Hospital, where I stayed for five days. The hospital was a difficult experience. There were no clocks, strict schedules, and constant monitoring. It felt like a mix between school and prison. Many of the other kids there had their own struggles, and I formed connections with them. I became someone who listened and offered comfort. During my stay, I learned the importance of boundaries and understanding myself. I realized that I had spent years feeling unheard. Instead of turning my emotions into something destructive, I turned to writing, drawing, creating, and developing skills that could help build my future. After leaving, I continued therapy and appointments, but I felt like I was always being watched. Even now, I struggle with feeling completely safe. The experience changed how I view freedom, trust, and relationships. Looking back, I don’t believe the biggest issue was one single moment. It was years of feeling misunderstood because of the cultural and generational differences between me and my grandparents, who came to America as adults. They were raised with different ideas about parenting, independence, and respect. I am still learning from what happened. I learned how important communication is, how powerful boundaries can be, and how much it matters to truly listen to someone before judging them. More than anything, I learned that being heard is a basic human need. My experience showed me how painful it can be when someone feels invisible, and how important it is to create space for understanding.
