My experience with addiction began at a very young age. When I was 13, I was groomed by my uncles to use drugs, a situation that left me vulnerable and confused during a critical stage of my life. What started as manipulation and exposure soon became a coping mechanism, and I continued to use drugs for the next fifteen years, until I was 28. Addiction consumed every aspect of my life. I lost trust, self-respect, and my connection to my sober family. At one point, the situation escalated to the point where my family had restraining orders against me. I had become a slave to my next fix, and it felt impossible to break free. Living in that cycle was isolating and destructive. Addiction created a world where my choices were dictated not by my goals or values, but by the need to feed the dependency that controlled me. I missed out on milestones, strained relationships, and the ability to build a life I could be proud of. During those years, I experienced shame, fear, and a lack of direction. My identity had been eroded by substances, and I often felt that I would never regain control of my life. Turning my life around required immense courage and commitment. When my grandparents passed away, they left me a house—a gift that carried both sentimental and financial significance. At the time, I was unaware of the full circumstances surrounding the inheritance as my uncle lived in it. It wasn’t until a few years later, when an attorney contacted me to discuss the estate-- that I learned I had effectively been cheated out of my rightful ownership. My uncle had manipulated the situation in a way that meant the property was no longer mine, by forging documents with my name-- despite the clear intention of my grandparents. The first emotions I felt were shock and betrayal. It was hard not to feel angry—not only by the legal maneuvering that had taken place, but by the knowledge that a family member had prioritized personal gain over fairness and respect for my grandparents’ wishes. I more than likely would have let him keep it had I known initially as he has a young son. For a brief moment, I considered pursuing litigation to reclaim what had been due to me. But at that moment, I thought of my sweet grandparents, and questioned myself on how would they react when they were alive & they were in my position? My grandpa was a deputy sheriff turned business owner after retirement. A few weeks before he passed i asked him what the best advice was he got in life-- & he told me when he was in the military his Sargent always made him clean a toilet for extra duty and he would clean them all. He always was so selfless. My grandma was a very hard worker who worked for Tree Top doing manual labor for almost 20 years working in apple orchards. She loved her whole family unconditionally, even when I seen her own kids backstabbing her and at the time when I was a kid-- I didn't feel they deserved her grace. The attorney presented all of the options, outlining the potential outcomes, costs, and emotional toll. I was faced with a difficult decision: fight to regain ownership through legal action, or accept the situation and focus on moving forward without the house. Ultimately, I chose not to pursue litigation. This decision was not born out of fear or resignation, but rather from careful reflection on what I valued most. I realized that engaging in a legal battle with my uncle could permanently damage family relationships and consume an immense amount of time, energy, and financial resources. While I would not condone the act of being cheated out of my inheritance, I recognized that responding with prolonged conflict would likely create more harm than benefit—not just for me, but for those around me. I decided that maintaining my personal integrity, emotional health, and family peace was more important than reclaiming material property. This experience taught me the complexity of credit, fairness, and justice. In many ways, it felt as though my grandparents’ acknowledgment and trust had been replaced by another person’s self-interest. I have had to become much more organized by using planners, setting reminders, staying up late & sacrificing sleep, and creating a schedule that helps me stay on track. While it is still a challenge, I have learned how important discipline and consistency are. Another challenge I have faced is self-doubt. Returning to school after being away for 16 years made me question whether I was still capable of succeeding academically. I worried about whether I would be able to keep up with the coursework, understand new technology, and meet the expectations of college-level writing and research. At first, these fears made me nervous, but over time I have proven to myself that I am capable. Each completed assignment, positive grade, making deans list and chancellors list and the encouraging comments from instructors has helped rebuild my confidence. I have also had to overcome the mental and emotional challenge of stepping outside of my comfort zone. Going back to school requires a different mindset, especially when life experience has changed my priorities. There are times when stress, fatigue, or family obligations make it tempting to give up. However, I remind myself why I started this journey in the first place: to build a better future for myself and my children, and to show them the value of perseverance and education. While volunteering at a local food pantry, I noticed that while we had crates of canned vegetables, we were consistently short on hygiene products—items not covered by most assistance programs but essential for human dignity. Seeing a mother's face drop when told we had no soap or toothpaste was the "spark." It was a reminder that service isn't just about providing calories; it’s about seeing the whole person. ​The Challenge of Leadership I decided to organize a "Dignity Drive" at my high school. The challenge wasn't the desire to help, but the logistics. I initially struggled with delegation, trying to manage collection bins, outreach, and transportation myself. When the first week yielded only a handful of items, I realized that leadership isn't about being the hero; it’s about building a bridge. I had to pivot, empowering a team of classmates to take ownership of different tasks. By letting go of total control, I saw the project triple its impact. I had to make several trips to bring all the donations in. The food pantry was amazed at the generosity of my peers & their families. I was able to round up a multitude of items from baby care to pet food-- things outside of the scope of what I had initially was seeking out. I became an agent for change by doing this as it sparked others who volunteered to do the same inside their social circles (jobs, churches, etc.) It was a humbling moment to be able to not just serve my community but to make a small impact for those who needed it. ​ This experience redefined my understanding of faith as a verb. Previously, I viewed faith as a private comfort; through this work, it became a public commitment. It taught me that service is often inconvenient and messy, requiring a "leadership of humility" that listens more than it speaks. It taught me that when you see a need, don't just think of an idea or even worse complain--put in the work to do something about it. By the age when many of my peers were focused on discovering who they were, I was responsible for keeping two small humans alive. I became a mother twice during my teenage years, and while I would never change my children, the experience demanded that I grow up faster than I was emotionally or financially prepared for. For many years, survival came before self-discovery. Raising my children required sacrifice, discipline, and an unrelenting focus on their needs. I learned how to manage stress, make difficult decisions, and persist through exhaustion and self-doubt. However, in dedicating myself fully to motherhood, I postponed my own goals and identity. I was not just balancing school, work, and parenting; I was quietly setting aside dreams I assumed I no longer had the right to pursue. At the time, growth looked like endurance. The true turning point came later, once my children became independent and eventually left home. For the first time in years, I was forced to confront a question I had avoided: who am I outside of being a parent? That transition was unexpectedly difficult. Without the constant demands of caregiving, I experienced both freedom and uncertainty. I realized that while I had spent years nurturing my children, I had neglected my own aspirations and emotional development. Instead of retreating from that discomfort, I chose to lean into it. Living with borderline personality disorder is often described as living without emotional skin. For me, this manifests as a world of vivid extremes. When I'm in a high moment-- the intensity is so consuming that the rest of the world fades away. I'm entirely focused on the electricity of the moment. Conversely, during lows, the tunnel vision returns. But this time the light at the end of the tunnel feels entirely extinguished. For a long time, I felt like a passenger in my own mind, swept away by whatever emotional tide was the strongest. However, the true story of my journey isn't the intensity of these waves but my dedication to learning how to navigate them. Overcoming a challenge as pervasive as BPD doesn't mean the emotions disappear. It means building a massive internal toolkit to manage them. I've had to cultivate a level of discipline and self-observation that most people never have to consider. Through personal mindfulness practices, I am learning to find the middle ground. I now practice acknowledging a low moment without letting it define my entire future. Enjoying a high moment without losing my focus on my long-term goals. This resilience has transformed my greatest vulnerability into a source of emotional intelligence. Moving forward, I intend to use this hard-won perspective to support others and generate awareness. Since I feel things so deeply, I can usually tell when someone is struggling-- long before others can. Since I understand the way of emotional darkness, I am uniquely equipped to spot the subtle signs of struggle. In a university setting,s stress is high, and many students feel isolated. I want to create spaces where others know "it's ok to not feel ok" and are informed that they don't have to go through it alone. This extra-sensory empathy is something I can utilize to support people in my future career. Being equipped with radical empathy can help me connect to others. Borderline Personality Disorder is often referred to as an invisible illness. BPD is often stigmatized as difficult or as the individual possessing character flaws-- rather than what it really is, a legitimate biological and psychological struggle. I want to be a voice of clarity. By being transparent with my diagnosis, I aim to humanize the disorder. One goal I have is to show that people with BPD are actually some of the most resilient and hardworking individuals, as they have had to fight an internal battle every single day just to stay balanced. My diagnosis is not a limit on my potential. It is the very reason as to why I am so prepared to handle the pressures that come along with higher education and all of which that entails. I am not a victim of my emotions; I am a student of them. This scholarship would support me as I continue to make my challenges the foundation for advocacy and leadership.

Gifted children often face "under challenge". This can sometimes lead to boredom or loss of love, for learning. My goal is to become a facilitator of discovery rather than a purveyor of facts. My career path involves creating a safe-to-fail environment. I have personal experience supporting my own children who have intense emotional and sensory reactions. It comes naturally for me to foster a community of like-minded peers and aspire to be there for children. To help them feel seen and understood, rather than feeling like an outsider. I myself have navigated this world as a neurodivergent person. I know all too well that it requires specialized advocacy. I am committed to identifying and supporting twice-exceptional (2e) learners, ensuring they receive the accommodations they deserve-- never watering down the advanced content that their minds crave. My goal is to work with at-risk youth-- supporting children at a critical time-- as I feel that's what my life lacked growing up. I want to nurture the future innovators and thinkers of society. When you seek to meet one need, you will eventually meet another. For example, intellectual engagement reduces the frustration that leads to emotional outbursts. Within my career goals, I aim to foster an environment that respects those who are asynchronous developers. This will ensure that when I challenge a child's cognitive abilities, I will simultaneously provide the emotional scaffolding they need in order to traverse their age-appropriate social world. I know gifted kids have a hard time with the zone of proximal development and well as social-emotional learning (SEL). I would always show them the benefits of leaning into their individuality and how very important it is for us to be all different-- as we all serve different roles, and this requires us to have our own uniqueness. It is most definitely something each one of us needs to embrace and not see as a burden. I also love to bring up the topic of divergent thinking-- and how much fun it is to come up with solutions that can make a usual dreadful task become something fun, such as a game or a song. It makes life fun to be able to see things differently from others. How boring would it be if we all thought alike, looked alike, and sounded alike? Never are those who are different made to feel anything but amazing and made special in the image of Jesus.

The moment I stepped into my first psychology class, I realized that I wasn't just looking at a degree pat,h I was looking at my calling. While many find the study of the human mind to be an academic interest for me-- it felt like a road map to understanding how we can better support one another. While I do not have a personal connection to Nigeria, I do carry a deep respect for diverse backgrounds that make up our global community. The most significant cultural shift in my life was moving from Washington state to Texas. Growing up in an area that was predominantly Caucasian, I had a limited perspective on the lived experiences of others. In Texas, the demographics are the exact opposite, and for the first time, I found myself in the minority. This transition was eye-opening. It was the first time I witnessed and experienced the realities of racism in the South. This experience was uncomfortable but necessary as it stripped away my bubbles of privilege and forced me to see the world through a much wider and more empathetic lens. It taught me that understanding a culture different from your own is not just about observation but about experiencing the world from a different social position. 3. My perspective has been humbled most significantly through the journey of motherhood. We often grow up swearing we will never repeat our parents' choices, only to realize one day that they were doing the best they could with the tools that they had. This realization that I am far from perfect and have my own shortcomings has made me more compassionate towards others. This personal growth has been mirrored in my academic journey; my psychology classes have completely shifted my view of community. Because I lack the financial resources to purchase up-to-date technology, I have become self-taught in navigating digital platforms.
