Growing up in the shadow of cancer has been a defining aspect of my life, shaping my journey and steering me towards my academic and professional goals. The impact of cancer on my family has been profound, with both my mother and grandfather facing this formidable adversary. My story begins with my premature birth, a result of my mother's battle with cancer while carrying me. The emergency C-section that saved our lives marked the beginning of a challenging journey for both of us. We spent weeks in the hospital, with me in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for 1-2 months due to my fragile condition, weighing barely three pounds. The complications didn't end there; I grappled with various health issues, including asthma and autoimmune diseases like type one diabetes. Despite the hurdles, my mother, a native of St. Louis, made the courageous decision to return home to provide us with the support of loved ones and the best opportunity to thrive. The specter of cancer returned years later when my mother became pregnant with my sister. The revelation was shocking; it turned out that the cesarean stitches from my birth had never dissolved, causing old scar tissue to reopen and cancer to infiltrate her body. She faced this new battle with unwavering determination, undergoing intensive treatments without me fully comprehending the gravity of the situation. I knew she was unwell and unable to climb stairs, but the details were shielded from me for my protection. Tragedy struck again when my grandfather succumbed to cancer, the result of environmental causes. This dual experience of witnessing my mother's resilience and losing my grandfather fueled my commitment to making a positive impact in the field of healthcare. It wasn't just about battling cancer; it was about supporting those who faced it, directly or indirectly. Eighteen years later, my mother faced the recurrence of cancer, proving once again her indomitable spirit as she battled the disease. Reflecting on my journey, I couldn't shake the feeling that I owe my life to my mother's perseverance. Despite being dismissed and told she was merely sensitive due to her pregnancy, she persisted, risking her life to be heard. This experience has ingrained in me the importance of advocacy, especially for mental health awareness, disabilities, and patient support. Today, as I pursue my degree, I am driven by a passion to contribute meaningfully to healthcare. My goal is to create affordable and durable medical equipment that can positively impact the lives of individuals facing health challenges. The need for reliable and accessible medical support became evident in my own family's journey, inspiring me to channel my experiences into a force for positive change. My advocacy extends beyond the professional realm; I am committed to raising awareness about mental health, championing the rights of individuals with disabilities, and providing support to patients navigating the complexities of their healthcare journeys. The resilience of my mother and the memory of my grandfather serve as constant reminders of the profound impact that healthcare challenges can have on individuals and families. In conclusion, my direct and indirect experiences with cancer have profoundly shaped my life, instilling in me a deep sense of empathy, resilience, and a commitment to making a difference. As I pursue my academic and professional goals, I am driven by the desire to create a more compassionate and supportive healthcare system, ensuring that every person, regardless of their health challenges, receives the care and understanding they deserve.
    Women in STEM Scholarship
My motivation to pursue a career in STEM stems from a desire to push the boundaries of knowledge and innovation. STEM fields offer a unique platform for problem-solving, creativity, and the opportunity to positively impact the world. However, my journey as a woman in STEM is not just about personal and professional growth; it's about breaking barriers and inspiring change. The gender gap in STEM has been a long-standing issue. Historically, women have been underrepresented in these fields, which has led to a lack of diversity and perspective. I believe that diversity in STEM is essential for driving innovation and solving complex problems. By choosing a career in STEM, I am not only following my passion but also contributing to the broader goal of gender equality in these fields. I see a future where STEM is not just a career but a driving force for change, where women are empowered to lead and innovate, and where technology is harnessed to break down barriers and transform lives. In closing, my path in STEM and advocacy is deeply intertwined. I am driven by the belief that my journey can be a source of inspiration and change. By pushing the boundaries of STEM and advocating for autism, mental health awareness, and type one diabetes, I hope to leave a lasting impact that goes beyond personal and professional success. I aspire to be a woman in STEM who not only excels in her field but also makes a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and communities in need.

DUI incidents have profound and far-reaching consequences, affecting victims, perpetrators, and society at large. A personal experience underscored the devastating impact of DUIs and the urgent need for effective prevention strategies. In this case, the individual became a victim of a DUI incident that fundamentally altered the course of their life. A collision with a drunk driver left their car totaled, and the offender fled the scene, leading to months of pleading with law enforcement to investigate the case. Unfortunately, indifference prevailed until surveillance footage became inaccessible, finally prompting authorities to acknowledge the gravity of the ordeal. The state trooper who eventually arrived at the scene was harsh, relentless, and unforgiving. Accusations of dishonesty and fleeing the scene of another accident compounded the distress. The experience left the victim deeply disillusioned with a system that should have protected and served, revealing a lack of timely response and understanding that exacerbated their trauma. The effects of DUI incidents extend beyond physical injuries, often inflicting emotional and psychological distress, made worse by the absence of empathy and support from law enforcement. This personal experience underscores the urgency of addressing DUIs and improving the handling of such cases. To prevent DUI incidents and ensure that cases are taken seriously, a multifaceted approach is essential. This includes enhanced law enforcement training to handle DUI cases professionally and empathetically, as well as the use of modern technology, such as surveillance cameras, to provide crucial evidence for identifying and prosecuting drunk drivers promptly. Public awareness campaigns should educate individuals about the dangers of DUI, emphasizing legal consequences and the potential for severe physical harm or even death, acting as a deterrent. Collaboration between communities and businesses to offer safe ride programs can provide alternatives to those tempted to drive under the influence, significantly reducing the number of drunk drivers on the road. Stricter penalties, including hefty fines, license suspension, mandatory alcohol education programs, and even jail time for repeat offenders, can act as a deterrent. Mandating ignition interlock devices for convicted DUI offenders can prevent them from starting their vehicles if their blood alcohol content exceeds a certain limit. Additionally, establishing a strong support system for DUI victims, offering emotional and practical assistance following an incident, is crucial to ensure they do not feel abandoned or ignored, with their experiences taken seriously. In conclusion, DUI incidents have profound and life-altering effects, as illustrated by a personal experience. Prevention strategies are essential to reduce these incidents and ensure cases are treated with the gravity they deserve. Through enhanced law enforcement training, improved surveillance, community awareness, safe ride programs, stricter penalties, ignition interlock devices, and robust support systems for victims, we can collectively work to prevent DUI incidents and spare countless lives from the physical, emotional, and psychological trauma they entail. By implementing these strategies, we can make significant strides toward reducing the prevalence and impact of DUIs in our society.
    Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
Legacy, to me, is not merely a concept but a profound embodiment of my journey, rooted in my upbringing and the choices I've made to break the cycle of generational struggles. As a first-generation individual born into an immigrant family, my understanding of legacy is deeply intertwined with my experiences, the pursuit of self-awareness, and the determination to provide a better future for my family. Growing up in a two-parent home within an immigrant family presented both challenges and opportunities. My siblings and I share a significant age gap, making me a foundational figure in their lives. It was my second nature to contribute to their upbringing, nurturing them and providing the support that our family often lacked. The absence of stability, healthy attachments, open communication, and healthy relationships created a complex backdrop in my early years. Throughout my life, I often found myself in the role of the sacrificial lamb or scapegoat, sacrificing my own desires and well-being to appease the family around me. It was a heavy burden to carry, but it was also a catalyst for my determination to break free from the generational curses that had plagued my family for years. I recognized that the patterns of struggle and hardship needed to be disrupted, and I was determined to be the catalyst for change. Choosing a different path for my life was not without its challenges. Many times, I was judged as being too difficult or disloyal for deviating from the expected path. However, it was through these deviations that I discovered the threads of strength and resilience to sew a different fabric of life for my family and the generations to come. I embraced the role of the hero, even when it cast me in a negative light because I knew it was the path to breaking the chains of generational struggles. For me, legacy is not about seeking admiration or acknowledgment; it's about creating a new narrative that transcends the pain of the past. I consider myself to be my family's legacy because I have chosen a path that leads to empowerment and liberation. The fruits of my labor are not for personal gain but for the collective benefit of my family. My legacy is one of strength, resilience, and the courage to break free from the constraints of the past. I take immense pride in the knowledge that the choices I've made will create a different and more hopeful perspective for the generations that follow. I have become a bridge between the struggles of the past and the possibilities of the future. I am paving the way for a legacy of empowerment, self-awareness, and growth that can be passed down through the generations. My legacy is about providing a sanctuary of hope and possibility, free from the burdens that plagued my family for years. It's about giving every generation before and after me a chance to thrive, to break free from the cycles of hardship, and to embrace a life filled with opportunities and abundance. In conclusion, legacy, to me, is a transformative journey of self-discovery and empowerment. My upbringing instilled in me the drive to break free from generational struggles, and I have chosen a path that allows my family to flourish and escape the shadows of the past. My legacy is the legacy of hope, resilience, and liberation, and I am forever grateful to have the opportunity to be the author of this new narrative for my family.

A revolution in food and agriculture is long overdue. Our current regulations and standards are struggling to cope with the complexities of the global food supply chain, leaving gaps in food safety, environmental sustainability, and food security. To secure a sustainable future, we must address these challenges head-on and embark on a transformative journey toward a more robust and adaptable system. Foodborne illnesses represent a significant challenge, affecting millions of people annually. Our current regulations, though well-intentioned, often fall short in preventing these outbreaks. A revolutionary approach is essential to ensure rigorous monitoring and regulation of the entire food supply chain. Furthermore, conventional agricultural practices have taken a toll on our environment. The excessive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers has led to soil degradation, water pollution, and the loss of biodiversity. Revolutionizing agricultural standards is imperative to promote sustainable farming practices, reduce environmental harm, and safeguard our planet for future generations. Ensuring access to safe and nutritious food for all is a major concern. Factors such as climate change, resource overuse, and inadequate regulation jeopardize food security. Moreover, it would mitigate environmental degradation, protect natural ecosystems, and conserve biodiversity, which is vital in the face of climate change and increasing threats to our planet. A more sustainable and safe food system can also create economic opportunities, especially for small-scale and local farmers who adopt eco-friendly practices. Consumers are increasingly seeking out ethically and sustainably produced food products, which can drive economic growth. In conclusion, a revolution in food and agricultural safety regulations and standards is long overdue. The current system falls short in ensuring food safety, environmental sustainability, and food security, and it is essential to embrace comprehensive oversight, sustainability, innovation, and public awareness as key elements of this transformative journey. A more secure and sustainable food system not only safeguards public health and the environment but also presents economic opportunities and ensures food security for future generations. This is a revolution that we cannot postpone, and the time to act is now.

Hello, my name is Kaya Crevecoeur and I am a senior at Florida International University. I became attracted to computer science because of my desire to improve my quality of life. When I was three years old I was diagnosed as a type one diabetic and my entire world changed. My life became dependent on different medical supplies and technology. To be more specific I require hourly blood glucose readings and insulin management supplies. In the last twenty years, I have watched diabetic and emergency supplies change and improve with time. The issue is that the supplies focus on blood sugar maintenance and not improving the quality of life or a timely cure. As a type one diabetic myself who else could determine the different everyday factors that may impact a diabetic's life? This perspective allows me to have the drive and determination to pursue this road excluding monetary desires. By understanding the foundations of computer science and engineering I can explore this world on my own. This is an extreme advantage because I can create a new technology without the middleman. Meaning my computer science degree will allow me to test and improve medical supplies without requiring outside intervention. Of course, over time every piece of technology needs to meet certain regulations and requirements down the line. Even though we all know that computer science engineers have an advantage in our technology-driven society. Companies rely on the specialization of IT personnel to lead with the company usually having little to no understanding themselves. This makes my development all the more special because I will be able to rely on myself through my studies. I've gained and researched many different aspects of the history and growth of medicine, insurance, and holistic treatments. So now it's time for me to perfect my software engineering craft and finish out my senior year strong! I believe that this will have a positive impact on everyone but specifically those with chronic illnesses and children. The most difficult aspect of having a high-risk disease can be the times when everything goes wrong. How will anyone know what to do? How to help? or even where you are? Yes, medical alert jewelry and identifications exist to help but in the state of an emergency while isolated, anything can happen. It is because of this that I have begun my development of different hardware prototypes and software applications. I will help and improve the lives of both the sick and their loved ones. In the end, I know that I already have and always continue to advocate for those who can not advocate for themselves. This scholarship can allow me the financial support to continue my educational journey so that I can improve the quality of life for many people across the world.

Hello, my name is Kaya Crevecoeur and I am here to share my academic and professional goals. This scholarship is especially vital to me as a current computer science major looking to refine my skills in the workforce. I have a total of five years of administrative experience, nine years of customer service experience, four years of research experience, and five years of Microsoft experience. I also have hosted and been a part of thirteen juvenile diabetes walks and am a type one juvenile diabetic myself. I am an extrovert with introverted qualities allowing me to build and make connections to communicate well with everyone. I have an amazing ability to relate to others while remaining objective in stressful environments by separating my emotions making me a very reliable person. Next, I have an associate degree in Communications from Valencia College education. I have two years of experience in hospitals, and administration experience, with an additional year of shadowing medical school students working as a scribe and analyst. I am currently a third of the way through my senior year at Florida International University as a computer science major with a minor study of international relations. During this time, I have learned how to train and communicate effectively with both staff and students. My experience and education have provided me with advanced communication skills supporting advocacy, and empathy while enforcing and managing rules/regulations. I have nine years of customer service experience and five years of management experience. Combined with my Associates in business this has allowed me to refine my marketing, management, and analytical skills as well. Computer science will allow me to create new technological advancements and treatments. I have been T1D for twenty-four years and have been advocating my entire life. I know that unless you have been affected by T1D, most of the country is ignorant of it. New juvenile cases and necessary medications have increased by over 1000% over the last ten years. Type one diabetes medication, insurance, and supplies continue to rise every year. I want to do everything that I can to make the world a more feasible place for diabetics to live in. Living with this illness can be terrifying and exhausting resulting in accidental deaths. A lot of this stems from the financial stress acquired by diabetics to go to extreme lengths to stay alive. Including choosing between living conditions, medications, and being able to buy basic necessities. I have had to make that decision many times in order to continue my education. Thus long term because of my own experiences I will create scholarships for diabetic students and families in need. With my degree, I also plan to create affordable medical supplies to combat the rise in T1D deaths. Additionally, I enjoy working in a multicultural environment alongside like-minded people. I am comfortable working in a team/solo environment/project and am ready to take my skills to the next level and grow alongside this amazing university. My experiences allowed a level of growth and guidance that many people don't get to experience in life. The amount of worry is consuming and can change you as a person. My experience as a diabetic has put me in so many different situations that I have no choice but to be open. It's because I'm open and patient that I can honestly say that I am alive today. I love a challenge, and I know that I can be a very conducive and a positive asset to your team. Thank you so much for your time and for considering me for this summer program.

My name is Kaya Crevecoeur and I am a current senior at Florida International University as a Computer Science major. I knew I wanted to pursue my bachelor's degree when I got out into the real world after my associate's degree. I looked for a long time and the market was difficult in Florida, especially for a communications major. After some time I opened my search and began looking into the IT world for the first time. Honestly up until that point, I never even considered looking because I didn't think I was intelligent enough for it. Little did I know that my entire world was about to change after I started applying. About two weeks into my new pursuit I got offered an interview for my first at-home position with a big-name company. That is when I became a remote tech support specialist and started to educate myself on tier 1/2 tech support and insuring technology. This job was perfect for me since I was already a communications major allowing me to refine my skills. Throughout this work experience, I got to engage and help people from all across the world. As someone who has always loved helping others, it never dawned on me how much accessibility technology gave me. The number of stories that I heard of people in tears because of losing phone information. Family members mourning their loved ones from old wounds because of a damaged piece of technology that I could fix. For hours and hours and hours I would spend with people hearing their stories and making them comfortable. When I first went into my tech job it was right when Covid began so no technical person support could happen in-store. Our lines would be full for extended times, especially when mandatory upgrades happened. A lot of these calls came from my elderly customers who didn't want the new device to begin with. After my entry position into IT, I then began to research other ways that I could use technology to further my humanitarian pursuits. Months and months passed and my fire and drive started to die down as life started to weigh in. Then all of a sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks what I wanted to do with my life. I want to dedicate my life to technological advancements in medical supplies and equipment for type one diabetics. As a juvenile type one diabetic of twenty-three years for the first time my path in life became clear. I was always confident in my ability to thrive but didn't know exactly how I wanted to attain that. It was from that point going forward that I dedicated my life to improving the lives of others. Time allowed me to fall in love with technology and solidified my future in computer science at FIU. As for my military connections, both of my grandfathers served in the military. My mother's father served in the army and I grew up the closest to him. My father is also an airforce veteran who raised me in a very militant but loving household. If it wasn't for me having type one diabetes I would have joined the military myself as well. The amount of confidence I have in myself now is due to the amount of research, multitasking, and problem-solving skills that technology has given me. In the end, it's my experiences, kindness, and goals that have led me here today and I am forever grateful. Thank you all for giving students like myself the opportunity for a better and more affordable education.

I have been a juvenile type one diabetic for over twenty years and have been advocating my entire life. I was diagnosed at three and learned fast that unless you have been affected by T1D, most of the country is ignorant of it. My autoimmune disease has affected everyone around me from strangers to family members. Sadly I have woken up to paramedics due to sporadic seizures for most of my childhood. Even now living in a post covid society I still practice extreme measures for my survival. This included my working environments and pay trying to transition into a new career. My social and mental health has been gravely affected and I know every ICU department/nurses within a 35-mile radius from me. The smallest thing can create a chain reaction and live alone I just can't take that risk because I can't save myself if I'm unconscious or seizing up. With my degree, I also plan to create affordable medical supplies to combat the rise in T1D deaths. Spring semester 2023 is my last semester with any assistance from FAFSA at all and I have no family contribution. Florida is also a costly state to live in and student housing can become a financial burden. I struggled at the beginning of my bachelor's degree and have come a long way. I was so focused on trying to make ends meet and not go into debt that my grades and health suffered. It wasn't until I decided to transfer to FIU and only work one job that I had the best grades in my entire life. I haven't been close to a straight-A student since I first started college. It brings me so much joy to look at my FIU transcripts and be able to see my hard work. This opportunity has mentally challenged me with academic obstacles that have shaped me into a resilient student. It is because of this that I am applying and pleading so that I can continue the rest of my senior year. I'm trying to represent all the under-represented type one diabetics at my school and across America. My academic path has led me up to this point in my career to continue advocating and educating. I have lived fearlessly as a type one diabetic and have pushed myself beyond limits I never dreamed possible. I carry the weight of my autoimmune disease with pride to uplift and take care of those around me. More importantly, this has led me to my path today dedicating my life's work and platforms to autoimmune disorders/disabilities. At the end of the day, I am appreciative of the opportunity you all have provided for me as a type one diabetic to feel recognized. That acknowledgment is not a normalized or formally recognized practice pertaining to T1D.
