Greetings! Welcome to my profile on the generous Bold.org!
My name is Kauthar Alrifaie, and I am a senior in high school. I have yet to obtain my high school diploma, but I will say this: I have always had, and still have, great hope for the future.
Therefore, while my achievements may not be notable compared to other amazing profiles, I am proud of what I have achieved thus far, and my objectives for the years to come.
I have always excelled in academics earning me honor roll throughout all of high school. I am also proud of my heritage, family, culture, and religion. I have witnessed enough to make anyone’s head go gray, whether it be emotional/financial/mental struggles, death, or even the gruesome nature of war and violence - I have seen it all. Due to this, I have one goal: to become a physician and help humanity.
The human body has always fascinated me, as no matter how much I know, there’s still more to explore. From the size of an atom, to how human systems cooperate to allow eight billion people to live on one planet of the millions in our solar system, there’s always something new to learn. So, going to medical school will satisfy my curiosity and support others throughout their hardships.
To end things, there’s no way I can capture all sides of my personality, so this much will have to do. At first, I felt defeated seeing the thousands of successful student profiles. But please remember this: despite feeling like a lamb amongst the talented wolves on beautiful Bold.org, I chose to be BOLD and take on this challenge!

Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
As soon as I read the word Holocaust, my body trembled in remembrance of Elie Wiesel’s image as he stood near a bunker with other Jewish men, trapped in the tight grip of a concentration camp. My heart broke as I imagined a chained young boy, not only unable to pursue his dreams and future, but simultaneously suffering unimaginable pain. But relief overcame me as Dr. Terry obtained the prestige and happy ending he deserved. May he rest in peace.
Soon, I noticed the similarity of our stories. Despite our different heritages, cultures, ethnicities, and encounters, we remained similar, our tracks undertaking a familiar trip. As a mere three-year-old, I found myself sleeping on my elder sister’s lap in an airplane. Beside me was my other sister and parents, with my one-year-old brother in my mother’s lap. Only later did I realize the gravity of this journey’s mark on our lives. Perhaps these few tons of metal symbolize summer vacations in Hawaii for Americans, but to me, they represent a radical change in life – a change in home, people, and future.
My family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, seeking a better life, one away from violence, fear, insecurity, and instability. They aimed for economic, educational, and future prosperity – basic human needs they could not afford for themselves in their teenage years. They sought to protect their values - religion, family, and traditions - all the while paving the way for me to devote my life to those they desired but could not attain - wealth, kindness, and education. Hence, I adapted to a new environment, teachers, and friends. I adjusted to speaking in an unfamiliar language, just as Dr. Terry had when he arrived in America. Just as the American Army Officer had assisted Dr. Terry during his challenging times, my parents did the same, and both of us were launched into a tunnel full of light, full of opportunities, and full of hope for the better in the future.
And just like Dr. Terry’s path in becoming a psychoanalyst helped his people, and just like that officer raised the honor of his country, I, too, want to help my people and serve my country. Illnesses, mainly cancer, have taken the lives of many in my home country, including my own brother and grandmother. By becoming a physician or medical-related professional, I hope to be able to help people of all ages, ethnicities, colors, and backgrounds to assuage pain, an experience not a single human has been able to avoid.
Furthermore, seeing as to how my path does not represent a drop in the ocean of the grand one Dr. Terry aimed for and indeed completed, he inspires me to keep going. His life proves that despite all hardships, one can become whatever they desire in the deepest parts of their heart. However, the most important thing is the availability of resources to any human being who still has a spark in their soul and which can be ignited into something magnificent.
