I plan to attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where I will pursue a degree in Agricultural Systems Management while competing on the rodeo team as a freshman. As a fifth-generation paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy), agriculture is more than a career path to me—it is a way of life that has been passed down through generations of my family. The values of hard work, responsibility, and respect for the land have shaped who I am, and they have inspired me to continue my education so I can give back to my community in meaningful ways. Growing up in Hawaiʻi has allowed me to see both the importance of agriculture and the challenges that come with it. Living on an island means resources are limited, and ranchers and farmers must constantly adapt to changing conditions. One of the biggest challenges we face is maintaining productive dry land while ensuring the health and well-being of our livestock. Water availability, feed costs, and land management are ongoing concerns that affect the sustainability of agriculture in our community. These challenges have motivated me to pursue higher education so that I can learn how to develop practical and sustainable solutions. Attending Cal Poly will provide me with opportunities to gain knowledge and hands-on experience in agricultural systems, land management, business operations, and emerging technologies. I am excited to learn from professors, industry professionals, and fellow students who share a passion for agriculture. Through these experiences, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how modern agricultural practices can improve efficiency, increase sustainability, and support future generations of ranchers and farmers. My long-term goal is to return home and apply what I have learned to strengthen Hawaiʻi’s agricultural industry. I want to help local ranchers and farmers overcome challenges by introducing innovative practices that improve productivity while protecting the land and natural resources that are so important to our islands. I hope to become someone that people can turn to for guidance, whether they need advice on livestock management, grazing practices, resource conservation, or agricultural planning. By sharing knowledge and working alongside others, I believe I can help create positive and lasting change within my community. In addition to improving agricultural practices, I want to serve as a role model for younger generations who are interested in agriculture and ranching. Many young people today are moving away from agricultural careers, but these industries remain essential to our communities and way of life. I hope to encourage others to pursue opportunities in agriculture by sharing my experiences and demonstrating that education and tradition can work together to create a stronger future. Creating a positive impact means preserving the values and traditions that have been passed down to me while embracing new ideas that can benefit future generations. By earning a degree in Agricultural Systems Management and bringing that knowledge back to Hawaiʻi, I hope to support local agriculture, strengthen food security, and help ensure that ranching remains a viable way of life for years to come. As a fifth-generation paniolo, I feel a responsibility to carry on this legacy, and higher education will provide me with the tools and opportunities needed to make a meaningful difference in the community that has given me so much.
