Ever since I was born, I have undergone multiple head surgeries due to medical conditions known as Craniosynostosis and Chiari Malformation. These conditions affected the growth and structure of my skull, leaving my head shaped differently from others and requiring years of medical intervention. While these procedures were necessary for my health and well-being, they also impacted my ability to participate in many of the activities that shaped the childhood experiences of those around me.
Growing up, I often found myself on the sidelines, watching my classmates take part in athletic activities like volleyball or basketball—sports I longed to join but physically could not. Being excluded from these opportunities made me feel isolated and different, leading to moments of sadness and frustration where I would catch myself thinking, “If only I weren’t me.” At a young age, it was difficult to understand why my life had to look so different from those around me.
In addition to these physical limitations, the visible scars left behind by my surgeries became another challenge I had to face daily. Even something as simple as getting my hair done or trying new hairstyles often resulted in my scars being exposed. This would draw unwanted attention, stares, and questions from others, making me feel self-conscious and insecure about my appearance. For years, I struggled with accepting my differences and wished I was born “normal”.
However, as I’ve grown older, my perspective has gradually changed. I have come to realize that the very challenges that once made me feel weak have actually made me a stronger and kinder person . Overcoming both the physical and emotional hardships associated with my conditions has taught me perseverance, self-acceptance, and inner strength. I have learned that I am not defined by my scars or limitations, but by how I choose to rise above them. Today, I embrace the fact that I am different because it is those differences that make me uniquely beautiful.
As a Hispanic woman who has faced obstacles from an early age, I am determined to pursue higher education and finish college not only for myself but also for my family. They have supported me through countless sleepless nights, emotional hardships, and significant financial burdens brought on by my medical care. Their unwavering love and sacrifices motivate me every day to succeed.
My goal is to one day make my family proud by achieving my dreams and building a future that reflects everything we have overcome together. I want them to be able to share our story with pride, knowing that their sacrifices were not in vain and that every challenge we faced helped shape the person I have become today.
