Katrice Williams is a first-generation college student and a legal fellow with Ohio Legal Help. Her other full-time role involves caring for her two children, one of whom is her infant son, who was born prematurely and contracted an E. coli infection in the NICU. After her son's near-fatal infection, he developed serious neurological issues, including infantile cerebral palsy, epilepsy, spasticity, severe developmental delays, hydrocephalus, and cortical visual impairment, among others. Katrice fought for months to qualify her son for a Medicaid waiver, especially after numerous administrative appeals. Now that her son has qualified for a Medicaid waiver, they have been in a months-long search for a qualified pediatric skilled nurse to provide in-home care. Finding that there are few available nurses, Katrice has decided to attend nursing school so she can become her son's paid parent caregiver and meet his complex needs. The scholarships she is pursuing will help cover her nursing school tuition and allow her to become a registered nurse. In the past, Katrice received a dual master’s degree in Social Administration and Nonprofit Organization from Case Western Reserve University, and a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Stanford University in California.
