My favorite piece is my last, titled "In Spite". I had a very specific feeling when creating the piece, and I loved the way it turned out because it brought that exact feeling to life. The piece is about female rage, portrayed through the metaphor of a menacing dog who pulls out her own teeth in order to remain kind despite her anger. I was inspired to make this piece after exploring the stories of generations of women before me and reflecting on my own life as a young woman. Seeing the misogyny and systemic oppression women have faced and still face today bring me great frustration/rage that I can't move on from, making it hard to go about my daily life. The dog I created experiences the same feeling. I'm most proud of the emotion I was able to pinpoint and convey through the dog's eyes. Expressing specific emotions through just the eyes is challenging, especially in sculptural work. It was always my goal to be able to do that, and I think I achieved it in this piece. I'm also glad I created it because it gives a visual representation of the most overwhelming thoughts and emotions I was feeling at the time when creating it. Creating this piece helped me understand myself better, and by viewing and analyzing it, others can understand and resonate with the way I feel too. Thank you for reviewing my application! Katie Kun
