Judy Fowler Memorial Scholarship
One week out from my sixteen birthday, I sat in a room awaiting my ride. I had just finished an interview with a social worker, and was afraid of what my future would entail. Someone who worked at the building then came up to me, and asked if I wanted something. I agreed, and was led into a room that was full of donationed blankets and stuffed animals. I walk along the shelves, and I am drawn to a single layer tie blanket that was printed with sloths. For the summer ahead, I clung to that blanket as things changed in my family left and right. I still use that blanket when things go astray.
A simple blanket like that made a difference. I have no idea where it came from, all I know is that it was donated. I have taken the comfort that it gave me and have tried my best to keep giving things like that. A few months ago I opened up about this for the first time with people around me, while during a church youth activity where we made blankets of our own to donate. I shared my experience and invited the other teenage girls there to recognize the importance their service could do to others that are even just right in their community.
During these actions of service, both received and given, I have noticed many impacts because of it. With it being a blanket, I hugged it tight and it gave me warmth in the night as I cried myself to sleep those few months. I felt seen, even by those who didn't know me personally or even who it would end up with. I have been able to then take my experience and try to give it to other people by numerous other service projects. I participated in putting together food kits for elementary schools, donating to fundraisers, and making and donating blankets. I hope to continue doing good for others throughout my life, by serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints after my first year of college. I hope that I can become a wife and mother, and help in my community. Judy Fowler dedicated her life to helping others, and I hope to do the same. This scholarship will help me get to a place in life where I am able to help others, as I am moving on to continue my education and learn how to help my community.
