While I appreciated the odd history lesson now and then, I didn't need every Tom, Dick, and Harry trying to teach me about the Fourth of July. However, what hurt the most was the label "lazy immigrant." It's a title so far from the truth it's laughable. While juggling nursing school, I am holding down two jobs, volunteering at a foster parent advocacy agency and looking after my medically special needs foster child alongside my two boys under four. I reckon many could only walk a mile in my shoes with a bit of a stumble. The job market was another beast entirely. Many a time, I was passed up for jobs in favor of American citizens. If someone were to embody an example of overcoming challenges, it would be me. My journey has led me to a different country and to start over by myself as an immigrant in the US. Ten years after immigrating, starting over my life during a recession, three boys and two of them with severe special needs and a catastrophic injury. I have lived through all the challenges that someone could imagine in a lifetime, let alone ten years. More recently, my experience in the healthcare field in Georgia is a testament to this reality. By sharing my story, I aim to highlight the hurdles I've faced, the growth I've experienced, and how this scholarship can further support my pursuits. Some time ago, I noticed a gap in healthcare and decided to establish a nonprofit birth center in Augusta. I intended to provide women with an improved, compassionate, high-quality healthcare environment. Unfortunately, Georgia's Certificate of Need program granted hospitals a say in matters and rejected my proposal. Being discouraged by this setback fueled my determination to advocate. Then, viewing the door as a dead end, I saw it as an opportunity to pursue a broader mission; challenging and transforming maternal healthcare regulations in Georgia. I fully immersed myself in nursing studies while passionately advocating for reforms in the healthcare system. I didn't just want to run a birth center; I also wanted to stand up for those who couldn't voice their concerns for those overwhelmed by the bureaucracy's complexities and inadequacies. It was a journey for me trying to balance my family responsibilities, pursue my goals, and relentlessly advocate for change. The financial burden of juggling education, advocacy work, and caring for my family was intense. My journey as an advocate has made me acutely aware of the issues within our healthcare system. As a Christian nursing student passionate about midwifery, I was thrilled to discover Ina May Gaskins's Guide to Childbirth. This incredible book has given me insights into the principles of care and the importance of empowering women throughout the birthing journey. It also highlights the body's resilience and the numerous benefits of receiving care. One invaluable lesson that I took away from this book is the significance of creating an environment for mothers. As someone who aspires to become a midwife and establish my birthing center in the future, I recognize that a woman's birthing experience can profoundly impact her emotional well-being. Therefore it becomes essential to establish a space where women feel empowered to make decisions about their care. Furthermore, this book has further strengthened my belief in every woman's right to choose how she gives birth and where she feels most at ease. Unfortunately, many women are left without options. They are forced to give birth in hospitals or at home without support or resources. My ultimate goal is to bring about change by establishing a birth center that provides care which is easily accessible and compassionate for women in the Augusta region. One aspect of Gaskins's account that deeply resonated with me was her experience of giving birth after enduring trauma. In my delivery, I had an emergency C-section after enduring 52 hours of labor. It was pretty distressing. It hasn't discouraged me from considering births. One thing that drives me is empowering women and encouraging them to take control of their health and overall well-being. Educating them about their bodies and the different healthcare options available is essential, as this can significantly improve healthcare outcomes in our community. As a student from a family about to enter college, I understand the opportunity I have to impact my community and inspire others to do the same. I'll gain the skills and resources to achieve my goals by pursuing education. I intend to pursue a nursing degree, allowing me to continue working in healthcare while expanding my understanding of practices. Suddenly I found myself in the role of a parent, to my siblings, to my sister. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed and longed for a childhood. I wished to spend time with friends after school without worrying about meals or doctor's appointments. However, despite the challenges, there was a side. Even though it was tough, taking care of my family taught me the importance of understanding others' feelings, being resilient, and cherishing the bonds within my family from an age. It also taught me to be patient, attentive to others' needs, and resourceful. These lessons shaped my aspiration to become a nurse. Despite facing her struggles, my mother served as a source of strength and inspiration. She often shared stories about her challenges and how she overcame them with sheer determination. I can still recall her words echoing: "Keep moving, dear. The world is full of opportunities." Her dreams for me were deeply rooted in education as she believed it held the key to a future. I started to spiral into depression, and it was only when I reached out to our local foster parent support group and caseworker that I got a break. This helped me immensely. In the nursing world, we use it to create test-style questions to prepare for nursing exams. The significance of AI in making detailed study plans and accurate test questions in the style of the nursing board exams is an incredible tool that can help so many students. For example, I am a student who has three boys under four at home, a busy after-school schedule, and I need to utilize my time to study. I need to make the most of every single second to maximize my time while looking after my mental health. When using AI to generate test questions specific to my material, I can check my knowledge and brush up on areas needing clarification. If I get a question wrong continuously, I can ask the AI to explain the term or definition to me in simple terms so I can break it down and understand it. This has been incredibly useful in a Psychiatric Nursing Class, but I need to understand some Pharmacology terminology. It saves me time from going back and forth between multiple textbooks to find the answer, which is often hidden in various chapters. Some issue that needs to be addressed is using AI detectors in school. A few of my classmates and I worked on a poster this year, which flagged our thesis statement as AI-generated when the teacher gave the AI statement to us. She had created it, and in turn, she saw the flaws of AI detectors. We showed her that it also states that the bible, the US Constitution, and the deceleration of independence are also flagged as AI-generated. Our professor copied in part of her doctorate thesis, which was also flagged as AI-generated, despite being generated ten years before the launch of AI. Sadly, people are going to use AI for the wrong reason. However, AI detection tools are not up to the capability to successfully tell the difference between a human-written paper and one assisted by AI. AI has a vast potential to personalize educational plans. I recently asked it to develop an educational program for my son, who has level 2 autism and is obsessed with the solar system. It gave me an incredibly detailed 30-day plan with writing, math, and science-based problems all about the solar system. He was thrilled and did not realize he was completing curriculum work while fixating on his favorite hobby. It is not just college students benefiting from AI but preschoolers. AI will be a game changer in customizing the educational plan for every individual. Schools have always said they could not adapt to give each child special treatment or their path. AI is the answer. Every child could have their preset curriculum to help them find their strengths and weaknesses. There could be a use for creating personalized study plans and tools for struggling children and adults. After graduation, I plan to study nurse-midwifery and use AI technology to develop a training program to accelerate the program. We have a vast shortage of Nurse-Midwives in the United States. The only way to correct this imbalance is to find a better, clearer, and more defined path to make the courses more accessible to nurses who wish to pursue midwifery. In conclusion, this is an exciting time to be in school. AI will be the future, and there will be no stopping its growth or use. It will assist people in more ways than just with education. Some people use it to create meal and workout plans and find which Netflix show to watch next. The possibilities are endless.

Nursing has always been a field of interest to me since I gave birth in 2019. It aligns with my passion for midwifery, childbirth, advocacy, newborn care and assisting women in pregnancy. I aspire to become a nurse midwife, where I would have the opportunity to work closely with expectant mothers and their babies. I would be able to offer care and support during one of the most significant and emotional times of their lives. Additionally, I could give them firsthand experience and explain what they are going through while pregnant and postpartum. As someone who has experienced both natural and medicated labor, I can offer them valuable insight into what they are going through and provide true empathy at the most painful experience of their life. Being a part of such a beautiful moment in someone's life would be an incredibly gratifying experience I can’t think of a better way to spend your day. I can't think of a happier profession! Although there would be moments of sorrow, such as with stillbirth or miscarriage, I believe I could offer compassionate and professional care to these women. As I have also experienced both situations as a doula. One of my goals while being a midwife is to help bridge the gap in the lack of midwives in the healthcare system within the United States. Multiple studies have shown midwives offer safe and effective care to expectant mothers and their babies. Unfortunately, there are not enough midwives to meet the increasing demand for their services in the United States. When I finish my specialism in midwifery, I hope to help increase women's access to quality prenatal and postnatal care by driving more nurses into the field by leading by example. Another goal of mine is to continue pursuing my passion for women's health advocacy and maternal healthcare reform. I firmly believe that healthcare is a fundamental human right, and everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, irrespective of their income or social status. My journey as a foster parent to a baby abandoned under Georgia's Safe Haven law is a testament to creating a family legacy for him within our family. As we navigate his unique medical needs and prepare for adoption, my family and I are excited to give him a life filled with unconditional love and countless opportunities, and empowerment to overcome obstacles due to his disabilities. My husband and I have always believed in the power of compassion and the responsibility to create a safe space for every child. This is why we felt called to become foster parents in 2015. We specialize in babies born with drug and alcohol addiction. In February 2023, we received a call that was a little different. A baby had been abandoned, which meant there was a chance for us to adopt. Despite the complexities of his medical needs, our resolve to provide him with a loving home was unwavering. This commitment to inclusion and acceptance is a cornerstone of our family legacy that we hope to attain. Our legacy will celebrate diversity and cherish every individual's unique journey. Navigating the intricacies of our foster son's medical conditions presents challenges but strengthens our resolve. As parents to other special needs children, we are no strangers to the healthcare system, advocacy, and the tenacity needed to navigate the landscape of complex care. Our experience has equipped us with the necessary skills, resources, and patience for this journey. We apply these lessons to our foster son's situation, advocating fiercely for his medical needs. Adopting our foster son is the next crucial step. Our goal is to give him a loving family, a secure home, and a nurturing environment where he is cherished for who he is, regardless of his disability. We envision a future where he is defined not by his disabilities but by his strengths. We hope to provide him with all the love and resources he will need to overcome any obstacles in his life. Our family's legacy is a testimony to community service, healthcare reform, and advocacy, and this is the foundation we're building for our foster son's future. We strongly value fairness, acceptance, and kindness. We plan to pass these values to our son, helping him grow into a strong, kind, compassionate, and motivated person. We hope that he'll make his mark on the world with the love and support of his family behind him. Education is a big part of this vision. Our foster son's family could not afford anyone to attend college, and they are a prime example of the glass ceiling. I want him to see that education is obtainable at any point in life. By returning to school as an older student, I want him to know that it is always possible to grow and change. Winning this scholarship would allow me to focus on my family and college during the last year and a half of my nursing curriculum. I could spend fewer hours at my part-time job with my children. As I continue on my journey through nursing school and motherhood, I am inspired by a shared dream with my husband. This is a world where every child, no matter where they come from, is shown love and given all the opportunities they need to succeed. This goal gets me up and moving daily, reminds me to be compassionate with all patients (even the difficult ones), encourages us to keep going when things get tough, and fills us with hope for the future we're building together.

Nursing has always been a field of interest to me since I gave birth in 2019. It aligns with my passion for midwifery, childbirth, advocacy, newborn care and assisting women in pregnancy. I aspire to become a nurse midwife, where I would have the opportunity to work closely with expectant mothers and their babies. I would be able to offer care and support during one of the most significant and emotional times of their lives. Additionally, I could give them firsthand experience and explain what they are going through while pregnant and postpartum. As someone who has experienced both natural and medicated labor, I can offer them valuable insight into what they are going through and provide true empathy at the most painful experience of their life. Being a part of such a beautiful moment in someone's life would be an incredibly gratifying experience I can’t think of a better way to spend your day. I can't think of a happier profession! Although there would be moments of sorrow, such as with stillbirth or miscarriage, I believe I could offer compassionate and professional care to these women. As I have also experienced both situations as a doula. One of my goals while being a midwife is to help bridge the gap in the lack of midwives in the healthcare system within the United States. Multiple studies have shown midwives offer safe and effective care to expectant mothers and their babies. Unfortunately, there are not enough midwives to meet the increasing demand for their services in the United States. When I finish my specialism in midwifery, I hope to help increase women's access to quality prenatal and postnatal care by driving more nurses into the field by leading by example. Another goal of mine is to continue pursuing my passion for women's health advocacy and maternal healthcare reform. I firmly believe that healthcare is a fundamental human right, and everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, irrespective of their income or social status. Through my personal experiences, I have seen the impact a lack of healthcare access can have on individuals and families, and I am determined to make a difference. As a mother, I have experienced childbirth firsthand, including a problematic emergency C-section and a successful VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). These experiences have instilled in me a deep appreciation for the care and support that nurses can provide during labor and delivery. Recently, my family's decision to adopt a child with cystic fibrosis and deafness has taught me much about compassion in nursing. Our son requires constant medical care, and I have witnessed firsthand how crucial it is to have a supportive medical team. The care that he has received has inspired me to provide the same level of care and support to others. In terms of past medical experience, I have actively been working to change the law in Georgia to allow birth centers to operate without requiring certificates of need. This change would help increase access to midwifery care and provide more options for expectant mothers. Growing up with a sister diagnosed with severe autism and having firsthand experience with institutionalized autism in Romania, I developed a deep passion for advocacy, especially in healthcare. As a biological parent to two boys, one autistic, and a foster parent to a special needs baby with cystic fibrosis and deafness, I understand the importance of advocating for more benefits and rights for families. My unique background and experiences have shaped my career aspirations and life goals, which include attending college to pursue a nursing degree and working towards improving access to healthcare for underserved communities. I attended college to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to become a competent and compassionate nurse. The nursing field aligns with my passion for midwifery and pregnancy. It allows me to work closely with expectant mothers and their babies during one of their most significant and emotional times. As a mother, I have experienced childbirth firsthand, which has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the care and support nurses can provide during labor and delivery. My life goals include continuing to advocate for healthcare reform, particularly in women's healthcare access in Georgia, where maternal mortality rates are among the highest in the country. I am currently pursuing two large-scale lawsuits and advocating for two law changes through the Georgia House of Representatives to improve access to healthcare for women in Georgia. I am also the executive director of a nonprofit organization promoting healthcare for young women, empowering them to take control of their health and well-being. As a local business owner of two small companies and having immigrated from the UK to the US with just $100, I have demonstrated my tenacity and problem-solving skills. My determination and willingness to take risks have allowed me to raise $2 million to build a women's health institute and promote foster parenting and adoption in Georgia. Despite my busy schedule, which includes working two jobs, attending nursing school full-time, and managing meal prep for my family and clients, I am committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I wake up at 4 AM daily for school and work, managing to fit in one yoga workout and one run per day. I also teach women's self-defense seminars at local colleges and universities, empowering them to protect themselves and stay safe. My caregiving experience has been a defining part of my life, impacting my goals, journey, and identity. As a mother to three boys three, including one with autism and OCD, and a two-month-old foster child with cystic fibrosis and hearing loss, my life has been challenging but rewarding. Caring for my sons has taught me valuable compassion, patience, and advocacy lessons. My journey as a caregiver began when my first son was diagnosed with autism and OCD. He required extensive speech therapy, ABA, occupational therapy, and food therapy sessions. As a mother, I had to become an advocate for him to get the services he needed to thrive. This experience taught me how to navigate the healthcare system and advocate for my son's rights. Recently, my family fostered a two-month-old boy who was abandoned and left in a Safe-haven hospital in Georgia. He has cystic fibrosis and hearing loss, and we have had to advocate to get him therapies at a young age to prevent developmental delays. As a caregiver, I have learned the importance of supporting children who cannot speak for themselves. Outside of caring for my children, I am also a full-time nursing student and working full-time. Juggling multiple responsibilities can be challenging, but I am determined to impact my community positively. For example, I am working on changing laws to make establishing healthcare facilities in underserved areas easier. I am also suing the government to stop local facilities from restricting trade for new healthcare facilities that want to open. As a nurse, I plan to use my advocacy skills to make positive changes in the healthcare industry. Despite the challenges of being a caregiver, I am excited about the opportunities to improve access to healthcare for women in Georgia and beyond. My primary goal is to open birth centers across the state, starting with Augusta, to ensure every woman has access to safe and reliable healthcare. Additionally, as the executive director of a nonprofit organization promoting healthcare for young women, I hope to empower them to take control of their health and well-being. Being a caregiver has impacted my goals, journey, and identity in many ways. It has taught me the importance of patience, compassion, and advocacy.
