Bio

Hello! My name is Kathryn and I am honored to be considered for scholarships. As a single mom of 4 children (2 with special needs), I am pursuing a degree in health and physical education to make a positive impact on their lives and the lives of other children with similar challenges. With a current GPA of 3.56, I am committed to academic excellence while juggling my responsibilities as a caregiver and student. I am actively involved in my children's schools and our church as a volunteer, where I contribute my time and skills to support their education and well-being. For four years, I served as the booth coordinator for the school fall festival, demonstrating my ability to multitask, plan, and organize events successfully. In addition to my volunteer work, I have experience in customer service, where I have honed my communication skills and developed a strong work ethic. I believe that these skills will translate well into my future career in education, where effective communication and organization are essential. As a single mom, I face unique financial challenges, and a scholarship would provide me with the much-needed support to continue my education. I am committed to utilizing this opportunity to its fullest potential and making a meaningful contribution to my community as an educator. Thank you for considering my application. Your support would not only make a difference in my life but also in the lives of my children and the students I will serve in the future.

In my role as a health and physical education teacher, I recognize the powerful synergy between literacy and physical activity. I am eager to foster a learning environment that not only enhances students' physical well-being but also promotes literacy skills in a dynamic and engaging manner. Through innovative strategies and collaboration with classroom teachers, I envision a classroom where the boundaries between physical education and literacy seamlessly blur, creating a holistic approach to learning. One impactful method of integrating literacy into my physical education curriculum is by transforming children's books into interactive experiences. For instance, I propose starting a class by reading the enchanting tale of "Going on a Bear Hunt." Following the reading, students can embark on an exhilarating obstacle course that mirrors the stages of the bear hunt described in the book. This approach not only captivates the students' imagination but also reinforces literacy comprehension in a tangible and memorable way. Understanding the constraints of class time, I am committed to collaborating with classroom teachers to ensure continuity in literacy integration. By coordinating with them, we can synchronize the reading of selected books in the classroom before students arrive in physical education. This collaborative effort not only maximizes the impact of literacy initiatives but also fosters a cohesive learning experience for students across disciplines. In addition to interactive storytelling, I am enthusiastic about incorporating word games that seamlessly merge physical activity and literacy. Collaborating with classroom teachers to align with their spelling curriculum, I propose engaging students in relay races where they collect letter bean bags to spell out designated words. This not only reinforces literacy skills but also instills teamwork and camaraderie, enriching the overall educational experience. To further intertwine literacy and physical education, I plan to utilize cue word cards during various activities. For example, while conducting games that involve different locomotor skills, I can hold up cards featuring both a picture of the skill and the corresponding word (e.g., skip, jump, slide, gallop). This visual reinforcement not only aids in literacy development but also enhances students' understanding of the associated physical movements. Lastly, I aim to promote literacy by having students read directions for different stations. This multifaceted approach not only enhances reading skills but also cultivates students' ability to follow instructions independently, fostering a sense of autonomy and responsibility. By bridging the gap between literacy and physical education, I am confident that students will not only develop strong bodies but also become proficient readers and effective communicators. I am excited about the opportunity to implement these innovative strategies and contribute to a learning environment that nurtures well-rounded individuals equipped with both physical and cognitive skills. In conclusion, my commitment to promoting literacy in the physical education classroom extends beyond traditional boundaries, aiming for an integrated and transformative educational experience. I am eager to bring this vision to life and appreciate your consideration for this scholarship, which will enable me to further enhance the learning journey of my students.

Dear Scholarship Committee, I am Kathryn Wren, a resilient single mother of four children and a survivor of domestic violence. With a tenacious spirit, I embarked on a journey to complete my degree in Health and Physical Education a year ago. This pursuit is not merely a personal aspiration but a mission to make a profound impact on the lives of children, addressing the gaps in health education that I observed firsthand as my own children navigated through elementary school. Having experienced the consequences of insufficient health education in elementary schools, I am driven by the conviction that awareness of our bodies is paramount for self-advocacy and protection. My personal journey, marked by overcoming adversity, has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of future generations. I embrace my journey with a unique set of challenges, including dyslexia and a learning disability that made traditional desk learning arduous. However, these challenges have only fueled my creativity and innovative approach to education. Reflecting on my own successful learning experiences, where I found solace in creating songs and dances to memorize spelling words and excelled in hands-on activities, I am inspired to revolutionize the way we educate children about health and physical education. My dream extends beyond the attainment of a double major bachelor's degree; it encompasses the creation of an elementary physical education curriculum that seamlessly integrates health education through engaging games and activities. I envision a curriculum that not only imparts knowledge but also nurtures a love for learning, catering to diverse learning styles and fostering a holistic understanding of well-being. Through my journey, I have come to understand the transformative power of education, and I am committed to breaking down barriers for children facing challenges similar to mine. By developing an innovative curriculum, I aim to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that empowers children to embrace their uniqueness and cultivate a lifelong commitment to their health. Receiving this scholarship would not only be a recognition of my dedication but an investment in a vision that transcends personal aspirations. It is an investment in the future of education, health, and the well-being of our children. I am eager to contribute to the evolution of educational practices, making a lasting impact on the lives of countless children. Thank you for considering my application. Trever David Clark Memorial Scholarship
My personal experience, as well as the experiences of my family members, have profoundly shaped my beliefs and career aspirations, particularly in the field of mental health. I am passionate about creating a physical education curriculum that incorporates crucial health lessons about body parts, intuitive eating, and personal health, while making it fun and engaging with games and activities. Throughout my life, I have faced my own challenges with dyslexia, ADHD, and an LD in decoding and processing information. Fortunately, my mother's creativity and innovative teaching methods saved me during my early years in school. She taught me to create dances, songs, and flashcards to help me learn. I quickly realized that not everyone learns best from traditional textbooks and the power of hands-on, interactive learning. For example, a relay race through the cardiovascular system could be an effective way for students to truly understand how blood moves through our bodies, and I believe that incorporating such interactive activities in physical education can greatly benefit students with different learning styles. I have also faced battles with anxiety and postpartum depression, which were exacerbated by being in an abusive marriage. These personal struggles have made me deeply empathetic towards the mental health challenges that many students face. I believe it is crucial to educate students early on about healthy ways to cope with insecurities and stress by providing them with tools and resources to take care of their mental well-being. I want to create a curriculum that normalizes discussions about mental health and teaches students effective strategies to manage it from a young age. Furthermore, the tragic loss of my cousin to eating disorders in 2019 has had a profound impact on my career aspirations. She was a kind and caring person who always went out of her way to help others. Her untimely passing made me reflect on the importance of using our talents and passions to make a positive impact on the world. It truly inspired me to fight through the challenges of being a single working mom with a toxic ex husband and special needs children to reach my dream of writing a curriculum that educates children about their bodies in a fun and engaging way from day one of school. I believe that by teaching children about their bodies in an engaging and enjoyable manner, we can instill in them a lifelong love for physical activity and a deep understanding of the importance of taking care of their bodies for their overall health and well-being. In conclusion, my personal experiences and the experiences of my family members have greatly influenced my beliefs and career aspirations. I am passionate about creating a physical education curriculum that incorporates health lessons in a fun and engaging way, drawing from my own challenges with learning disabilities, battles with mental health issues, and the loss of a loved one to an eating disorder. I am committed to using my talents and passions to make a positive impact on the lives of students, and I am determined to overcome any obstacles that come my way to fulfill my dream. As Erma Bombeck said, "When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me'." and I am determined to do just that.
