After graduation, I hope to impact the world through advances in medical devices with my biomedical engineering degree from whatever institution I attend. This major is very cross-disciplinary, meaning my work could impact numerous groups of people — like those in need of smoother-functioning prosthetics; high-tech scans for things like bleeding, bone breaks, and the brain; and anyone in medical facilities whose experience would be made better by progressive technology. With the growth of innovative technology, I hope to see an improvement in healthcare and medical technology through advancements in scanning technology, surgery tools, and more. Biomedical engineering along with disciplines in mathematics and sciences will allow me to partner with and learn alongside medical school faculty doing work and professors taking on research, which means I will be given access to a glimpse of my future while still in school by working with medical professionals and learning how to utilize engineering in hospital-like settings as well as getting a feel for research. Because the world today is a hub for opportunity, I will get to learn alongside a growing technological community. Through internship opportunities at hospitals and research in professors’ labs, college will supply me with the knowledge to effect change throughout my career. Aspects of the engineering program, like being able to start research as early as freshman year with developed lab space for things like biosystems work, are key to preparing me for the biomedical engineering world post-graduation. Not only will I be immersed in the biomedical engineering world throughout my studies, but through the expansive study abroad options offered, I’ll learn about biomedical engineering around the world. I’ll learn about my major, future profession, and how they’re applied in other countries, which will set me up for opportunities in well-established labs abroad. Hopefully, this exposure to the world and their utilization of technology will help me further my career past college and affect real change in the world. I truly hope to change the world for the better, even if I’m only changing the lives of singular individuals at a time. I feel that no matter where my education takes me, studying something in the STEAM department will give me the ability to make real change. Combining aspects of science, mathematics, and technology should allow me to help the world’s growing appetite for progress as well as explore the possibilities of healthcare, everyday, and educational technologies.
