My academic and personal experiences have inspired me to serve and support others. Honors and AP coursework, studying abroad in Spain, and participating in my school’s entrepreneurship program have all challenged me, strengthened my leadership skills, and encouraged personal growth. These experiences have helped me develop a strong work ethic and a desire to use my education to make a real difference.
In college, I hope to continue pursuing rigorous coursework, participate in the study abroad program, and minor in Spanish, a language I have studied for eight years. I enjoy working with others, and am motivated by the opportunity to help others succeed. Building effective leadership skills is also important to me and recognizing that leading others doesn’t always include being in charge.
While in college, I would seek opportunities to challenge myself academically, grow as a leader, and engage with my college community. I will also look to mentorship from professors and career resources to continue developing the skills needed to make a lasting impact. I am eager to learn, to lead, and to use my abilities to contribute meaningfully to others and in the community around me.

After one of my teammates, Jesse, scored his first touchdown, I took in the excited faces of my teammates. Even though we were losing the game, the score no longer mattered. Our entire team was celebrating Jesse and the hard work he had put in to reach this moment. This wasn’t just any flag football team; it was a Unified team, where athletes with and without disabilities compete together. At the beginning of the season, Jesse struggled to catch the ball, but through patience and lots of practice, his hard work had paid off. When he finally crossed the end zone, it was more than a touchdown. It was a moment of confidence and accomplishment. He kept a smile on his face for days, and our team could not have been more proud. In that moment, I realized what sports are truly about: inclusion, belonging, and shared success. I knew I wanted to be a part of moments like this for the rest of my life.
Having a sister with Down syndrome, Special Olympic sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Caroline started with swimming and soccer, but it wasn’t until recently that Unified sports were introduced at my high school. This year marked my first opportunity to participate in Unified flag football, and it quickly became my favorite team I have been a part of. I loved the opportunity to help create an environment where everyone felt included while participating in something many had previously only watched from the sidelines. As Unified programs expand to include sports like track and field, more students will have the opportunity to experience that same sense of belonging. Being part of these moments has been incredibly meaningful, and I am proud to witness the confidence and joy that comes from true inclusion.
Because of experiences like these, I have seen athletes, including my sister, flourish, which has shaped my vision for the future. I plan to pursue a career focused on expanding access to inclusive athletics within my community. I am especially interested in working with schools and local programs to integrate Unified sports and create more opportunities for participation. This includes expanding Unified teams across school districts and partnering with community athletic departments to increase community involvement. I also hope to develop initiatives that raise awareness and promote understanding of athletes with disabilities. By working towards these goals locally, I believe I can have an impact on the sports industry nationwide. Ultimately, I want to help create systems where every athlete has the opportunity to participate and feel a true sense of belonging.
Integrating Unified sports into schools and communities benefits everyone involved. While athletes with disabilities gain inclusion and acceptance, their peers build meaningful connections, build empathy and grow as leaders. Participating in or volunteering with a Unified team fosters lasting friendships that go beyond the field of play and strengthens connections within the broader community. Many times, the special needs community can be overlooked and misunderstood due to lack of awareness, but these programs help break down barriers. In addition, Unified sports develop teamwork and leadership skills that carry into future careers and everyday life.
Being part of Unified sports has shaped my values and shown me the true impact of athletics. I want to change how high schools and communities view sports and the inclusion of those with differing abilities. Through a career in this specific sports industry, I hope to expand opportunities and create environments where every athlete feels valued, supported and included.
