My life goals are to help the disadvantaged by eliminating their social determinants of health so they can be healthy and have a productive life, and to help provide a better life for my grandchildren. I am most passionate about helping others because someone helped me. I consider myself a great candidate because of my motivation, determination, and intellect to endure to the finish line and know that I can overcome any obstacle that comes my way.

RESILIENCE Scholarship
My parents John Maurice Harrison (Late) and Mildred Bernice Eisbey Harrison (Late) my favorite memories of them as a kid were how they were partners in every sense of the word, how they would after putting my twin sister and me to bed how they would put on there favorite music and dance together. I loved how they would every holiday have the whole family dress alike. I'm grateful for the values, and morals that they instilled in me, my parents were disabled, and they both were blind but no one believe that they couldn't see. I remember my parents telling us how important education was even though both of them only had a high school education, they really wanted the best for us. I remember them teaching us how to read and write music at the age of three because both of them were musicians. I loved to hear them sing around the house and at many engagements. My parents were on the Board of Directors for the National Federation of the Blind, the Capital Head Start Program, and the United Planning Organization(UPO). My parents were the greatest they enjoyed life and wanted us to do the same. Losing them was hard but because of what they instilled in me I'm able to push forward in life and be the best person that I can be. I now have children of my own and I have passed down what my parents gave me. My children are doing well for themselves and they all took advantage of their education now having children of their own they are doing the something by instilling the importance of education. I cannot express how much of an influence my parents were on me they sacrificed for me and my sister to be afforded the things that we sometimes take for granted. I can proudly say that if it wasn't for my parents I don't know where I would be but I do know that I am deserving of everything that is coming my way because I work hard, treat people the way that I want to be treated, respect my elders, and I remain kind and compassionate for others. My parents weren't just my parents they were my friend and I looked up to them because they had to deal with a lot of discrimination because of being disabled but they persevered through it all and raise us to do the same and to never give up or give in to the pressures of life but to hold our heads up high and get it done!!!!!!
Bold Great Minds Scholarship
Someone who I admire in recent history would be Michelle Obama because she brought class, grace, humility, and a fun-loving attitude to the White House. She really showed us how we should carry ourselves not just in the position that she had but every day of our lives. I liked the fact that she continued to raise her children the way that she was raised because you never heard of her children misbehaving in the public eye. I believe that she is the epitome of strength, courage, and perseverance. I loved watching her and President Obama display what marriage should look like when you have that support from your spouse. I wish they were still in the White House encouraging us that with God all things are possible for young minority girls and boys to "shoot for the moon and even if you miss you would be among the stars"!!!!! She is now on another journey in her life continuing to be that light to that young girl or a young lady whose dream is to one day be the next First Lady or President of the United States of America. The Obama's are gone from the White House but not forgotten from the heart of the people that they touched!!!!!!
Surya Education Assistance Scholarship
I'm passionate about receiving my education because without it would be difficult to achieve the goals that I set for myself to accomplish. I want to help the disadvantaged have a healthy and productive lifestyle because someone helped me when I needed it. I'm learning that I would be great at advocating for others because I'm receiving the knowledge and skills it would take to do so, plus I want to leave a legacy of giving back to the community that my family could be proud of and how important it is because you never know when you would need someone to help you. We tend to forget in this country that people need our help and want it they just need people like me who are willing to do just that. This has always been rooted in me as a child growing up because my parents who were blind instilled this in me because it was times I had to advocate for them as a child because of their disability they were looked over but I remember a time when my mother took my twin sister and I to our doctor's appointment the nurse came out and called for my sister to go back to see the doctor so my mother and sister went to the back to see the doctor so she was seen and they returned and at this time it has been quite some time and I haven't seen the doctor so I went to the desk and asked the receptionist was I called to see the doctor? she replied, What is your name? Kathi Harrison at this time, I spelled out my first name and last name, she said you were called an hour ago and I said Maam no one called for me because I been here the whole time and another person overheard our conversation, she said I called for you myself, Katie or Keith Harrison, right? No Maam my name is K-a-t-h-i, Kathi Harrison, ah where is your parent? My mother is sitting over there with my sister, she went on to say that she needs to speak with her, I said yes, Maam I will bring her to you so I brought my mother to her and she said to my mother Mrs. Harrison we called for your daughter to see the doctor but you didn't answer and my mother said to her no one called for my child but I did hear someone call out Katie or Keith Harrison that is not my child, she then told my mother that she was calling child protective services on my mother and my mother told her that if that's how are you going to handle the situation please do? So long story short child protective services arrived and talked to my mother and then they told the lady that we are not taking her children from her she very capable of raising her daughters, it was because my mother was blind and that I was doing what my mother told me to do that all this happened and I put this in my memory because I never want anyone to experience that kind of humility and disrespect because of their disability or anything that they need someone to step in and help them. That is my I'm so passionate!!!!!!!!!!!!
