VNutrition and Wellness Nursing Scholarship
As a future healthcare professional, I believe nutrition is one of the most important factors influencing overall health and quality of life. Many chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension, are strongly linked to lifestyle habits and dietary choices. Through my career, I hope to help patients understand the connection between nutrition and health while providing them with the tools and support needed to make sustainable lifestyle changes. My goal is not only to help people manage illness but also to empower them to prevent health problems before they occur.
One of the most important steps I plan to take is educating patients about the value of balanced nutrition in a way that is practical and easy to understand. Many people are overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition information and may not know where to begin. I would focus on teaching simple strategies such as increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, choosing whole grains, incorporating lean protein sources, and limiting highly processed foods and added sugars. By breaking nutrition down into manageable steps, I can help patients feel more confident in making healthier choices.
I also recognize that every patient has unique circumstances, including cultural backgrounds, financial limitations, and personal preferences. Because of this, I would work to create individualized recommendations rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. Encouraging healthier eating habits is often more successful when patients feel understood and supported. I would help patients identify realistic goals and make gradual changes that fit within their lifestyles. Small improvements made consistently over time can lead to significant long-term health benefits.
In addition to working directly with patients, I would encourage family involvement whenever possible. Family members often influence food choices and lifestyle habits, making them valuable partners in improving health outcomes. By educating families about meal planning, grocery shopping, and healthy cooking techniques, I can help create a supportive environment that promotes lasting change.
My interest in nutrition comes from my own experiences as a collegiate athlete. Learning how proper nutrition affects performance, recovery, and overall health inspired me to pursue a career focused on helping others. I have seen firsthand how education and guidance can transform a person's well-being. Through my career, I hope to combine compassion, education, and evidence-based practices to help individuals develop healthier eating habits, prevent chronic disease, and improve their overall quality of life. By empowering patients to make informed decisions, I can contribute to healthier individuals, families, and communities.
Stephan L. Wolley Memorial Scholarship
My name is Katherine Thormeier, and I am currently a rising sophomore at Otterbein University. At Otterbein, I compete on the cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field teams. As a distance runner, I dedicate a significant portion of my year to training, balancing the demands of collegiate athletics with my academic responsibilities. Being a student-athlete has taught me valuable lessons about discipline, time management, perseverance, balance, and the importance of maintaining both physical and mental well-being.
Outside of athletics, family plays a major role in my life. I am the oldest of four children, with one younger sister and two younger brothers. Growing up as the oldest sibling has given me the opportunity to serve as a role model and mentor within my family. We are very close, and one of the most challenging parts of attending college has been being away from them. However, the experience has also strengthened my appreciation for family support and motivated me to set a positive example for my siblings as they pursue their own goals.
Academically, I am pursuing a degree in Exercise Science. My long-term goal is to continue my education by earning a master's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and becoming a Registered Dietitian. I hope to work with athletes and help them optimize their performance, health, and overall well-being through proper nutrition. This career path is especially meaningful to me because it stems from my own experiences as an athlete.
Throughout my athletic career, I struggled with understanding how to properly fuel my body for training and competition. There were times when I knew something was not working, but I did not understand what changes needed to be made. Working with a nutrition professional helped me better understand my body's needs and significantly improved both my performance and overall health. That experience showed me the powerful impact that nutrition education can have on an athlete's life.
Because of the support and guidance I received, I developed a passion for helping others overcome similar challenges. I want to provide athletes with the knowledge and resources they need to perform at their best while maintaining long-term health. By combining my experiences as a student-athlete with my education in exercise science and nutrition, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of future athletes and help them achieve their goals both in sport and in life.
Amber D. Hudson Memorial Scholarship
If awarded, I would use my education and passion for health, wellness, nutrition and exercise to empower patients and their families to make informed lifestyle choices that can improve both the quantity and quality of life. Research consistently demonstrates that nutrition plays a critical role in the prevention, progression, and, in some cases, regression of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and autoimmune disorders. While medical treatments are often necessary, I believe that providing individuals with the knowledge and tools to make healthier choices can have a huge impact on overall health and well-being.
My approach would focus on education that is practical, evidence-based, and individualized. Every patient comes from a unique background with different health concerns, cultural traditions, financial circumstances, personal goals, and needs. Because of this, I would take the time to understand each patient’s situation before providing recommendations. Rather than promoting restrictive diets or unrealistic expectations, I would emphasize sustainable habits such as increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables, choosing whole grains, incorporating lean protein sources, staying hydrated, and reducing highly processed foods and added sugars. Small, consistent changes are often more effective and sustainable than drastic lifestyle overhauls.
I would also recognize the important role that family members play in supporting healthy behaviors. Including families in nutrition education can create a stronger support system and increase the likelihood of long-term success. I would provide guidance on meal planning, grocery shopping, reading nutrition labels, preparing balanced meals, and making healthier choices when dining out. Additionally, I would help families identify affordable and accessible options so that healthy eating feels achievable regardless of income level or life circumstances.
Beyond nutrition, I would encourage a holistic approach to health that includes regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, and social connection. These factors work together to influence overall wellness and can significantly affect disease prevention and management. By helping patients understand the connection between lifestyle choices and health outcomes, I would strive to build confidence and self-efficacy rather than simply providing instructions.
Ultimately, my goal would be to help individuals live longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. Improved nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits can increase energy, enhance physical function, reduce the risk of chronic disease, and improve mental and emotional well-being. If awarded, I would be committed to using this opportunity to educate, support, and inspire patients and their families to make meaningful changes that promote lifelong health and wellness. This opportunity would allow me to extend my impact beyond individual interactions and contribute to healthier communities overall.
